Real-time Multi-Layer Predictive Energy Management for a Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle based on Horizon and Navigation Data

Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV) have been of significant importance recently to comply with future CO2 and pollutant emissions limit. However, performance of these vehicles is closely related to the energy management strategy (EMS) used to ensure minimum fuel consumption and maximize electric driving range. While conventional EMS concepts are developed to operate in wide range of scenarios, this approach could potentially compromise the fuel consumption benefit due to the omission of route and traffic information. With the advancements in the availability of real-time traffic, navigation and driving route information, the EMS can be further optimized to extract the complete potential of a PHEV. In this context, this paper presents application of predictive energy management (PEM) functionalities combined with information such as live traffic data to reduce the fuel consumption for a P1/P3 configuration PHEV vehicle.

Machine Learning Based Flight State Prediction for Improving UAV Resistance to Uncertainty

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) encounter various uncertainties, including unfamiliar environments, signal delays, limited control precision, and other disturbances during task execution. Such factors can significantly compromise flight safety in complex scenarios. In this paper, to enhance the safety of UAVs amidst these uncertainties, a control accuracy prediction model based on ensemble learning abnormal state detection is designed. By analyzing the historical state data, the trained model can be used to judge the current state and obtain the command tracking control accuracy of the UAV at that instant. Ensemble learning offers superior classification capabilities compared to weak learners, particularly for anomaly detection in flight data. The learning efficacy of support vector machine, random forest classifier is compared and achieving a peak accuracy of 95% for the prediction results using random forest combined with adaboost model .

A Road Roughness Estimation Method based on PSO-LSTM Neural Network

The development of intelligent and networked vehicles has enhanced the demand for precise road information perception. Detailed and accurate road surface information is essential to intelligent driving decisions and annotation of road surface semantics in high-precision maps. As one of the key parameters of road information, road roughness significantly impacts vehicle driving safety and comfort for passengers. To reach a rapid and accurate estimation of road roughness, in this study, we develop a neural network model based on vehicle response data by optimizing a long-short term memory (LSTM) network through the particle swarm algorithm (PSO), which fits non-linear systems and predicts the output of time series data such as road roughness precisely. We establish a feature dataset based on the vehicle response time domain data that can be easily obtained, such as the vehicle wheel center acceleration and pitch rate.

Assessing Driver Distraction: Enhancements of the ISO 26022 Lane Change Task to Make its Difficulty Adjustable

The Lane Change Task (LCT) provides a simple, scorable simulation of driving, and serves as a primary task in studies of driver distraction. It is widely accepted, but somewhat limited in functionality, a problem this project partially overcomes. In the Lane Change Task, subjects drive along a road with 3 lanes in the same direction. Periodically, signs appear, indicating in which of the 3 lanes the subject should drive, which changes from sign to sign. The software is plug-and-play for a current Windows computer with a Logitech steering/pedal assembly, even though the software was written 18 years ago. For each timestamp in a trial, the software records the steering wheel angle, speed, and x and y coordinates of the subject. A limitation of the LCT is that few characteristics of this useful software can be readily modified as only the executable code is available (on the ISO 26022 website), not the source code.

A Standard Set of Courses to Assess the Quality of Driving Off-Road Combat Vehicles

Making manned and remotely-controlled wheeled and tracked vehicles easier to drive, especially off-road, is of great interest to the U.S. Army. If vehicles are easier to drive (especially closed hatch) or if they are driven autonomously, then drivers could perform additional tasks (e.g., operating weapons or communication systems), leading to reduced crew sizes. Further, poorly driven vehicles are more likely to get stuck, roll over, or encounter mines or improvised explosive devices, whereby the vehicle can no longer perform its mission and crew member safety is jeopardized. HMI technology and systems to support human drivers (e.g., autonomous driving systems, in-vehicle monitors or head-mounted displays, various control devices (including game controllers), navigation and route-planning systems) need to be evaluated, which traditionally occurs in mission-specific (and incomparable) evaluations.

Assessing the National Off-Cycle Benefits of 2-Layer HVAC Technology Using Dynamometer Testing and a National Simulation Framework

Some CO2-reducing technologies have real-world benefits not captured by regulatory testing methods. This paper documents a two-layer heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system that facilitates faster engine warmup through strategic increased air recirculation. The performance of this technology was assessed on a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. Empirical performance of the technology was obtained through dynamometer tests at Argonne National Laboratory. Performance of the vehicle across multiple cycles and cell ambient temperatures with the two-layer technology active and inactive indicated fuel consumption reduction in nearly all cases. A thermally sensitive powertrain model, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s FASTSim Hot, was calibrated and validated against vehicle testing data. The developed model included the engine, cabin, and HVAC system controls.

An Updated Comprehensive Chemical Kinetic Mechanism for Ammonia and its Blends with Hydrogen, Methanol, and N-Heptane

Ammonia is a promising carbon-free alternative fuel for use in combustion systems. The main associated challenges are its relatively low reactivity and high NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. Therefore, the combustion behaviour of ammonia and ammonia blends still needs to be better understood over a wide range of conditions. To this end, a comprehensive chemical kinetic mechanism C3MechV3.4, which is an update of C3MechV3.3, has been developed for improved predictions of the combustion of ammonia and ammonia blends. C3MechV3.4 has been validated using a wide range of experimental results for pure ammonia and ammonia/hydrogen, ammonia/methanol and ammonia/n-heptane blends. These validations target different data sets including ignition delay times, species profiles measured as a function of time, and/or temperature and laminar flame speeds over a wide range of conditions.

Automated vehicles (AVs)—and the automated driving systems (ADSs) that enable them—are increasing in prevalence but remain far from ubiquitous. Progress has occurred in spurts, followed by lulls, while the motor transportation system learns to design, deploy, and regulate AVs. Automated Vehicles: A Human/Machine Co-learning Experience focuses on how engineers, regulators, and road users are all learning about a technology that has the potential to transform society. Those engaged in the design of ADSs and AVs may find it useful to consider that the spurts and lulls and stakeholder tussles are a normal part of technology transformations; however, this report will provide suggestions for effective stakeholder engagement. Accelerating In-Vehicle Network Intrusion Detection System Using Binarized Neural Network

Controller Area Network (CAN), the de facto standard for in-vehicle networks, has insufficient security features and thus is inherently vulnerable to various attacks. To protect CAN bus from attacks, intrusion detection systems (IDSs) based on advanced deep learning methods, such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), have been proposed to detect intrusions. However, those models generally introduce high latency, require considerable memory space, and often result in high energy consumption. To accelerate intrusion detection and also reduce memory requests, we exploit the use of Binarized Neural Network (BNN) and hardware-based acceleration for intrusion detection in in-vehicle networks. As BNN uses binary values for activations and weights rather than full precision values, it usually results in faster computation, smaller memory cost, and lower energy consumption than full precision models.

Rule-Based Power Management Strategy of Electric-Hydraulic Hybrid Vehicles: Case Study of a Class 8 Heavy-Duty Truck

Mobility in the automotive and transportation sectors has been experiencing a period of unprecedented evolution. A growing need for efficient, clean and safe mobility has increased momentum toward sustainable technologies in these sectors. Toward this end, battery electric vehicles have drawn keen interest and their market share is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, especially in light-duty applications such as passenger cars. Although the battery electric vehicles feature high performance and zero tailpipe emission characteristics, economic and technical issues such as battery cost, driving range, recharging time and infrastructure remain main hurdles that need to be fully addressed. In particular, the low power density of the battery limits its broad adoption in heavy-duty applications such as class 8 semi-trailer trucks due to the required size and weight of the battery and electric motor.

Computing Complexity Reduction for Predictive Control of Engine Thermal Management System

This paper presents the design, implementation, and performance evaluation of a reduced complexity algorithm for a predictive control which is based on our previously published SAE paper (2021-01-0225) titled, “Model Predictive Control for Engine Thermal Management System.” That paper presented a model predictive control (MPC) design concept and demonstrated energy efficiency improvements by enabling engine pre-cooling based on GPS/Navigation data to recognize future vehicle speed limit and road grade in anticipation of high engine load demand. When compared to conventional control, the predictive control demonstrated considerable energy and fuel savings due to delayed timing of both knock mitigation and activation of radiator cooling fan during high engine load demand. However, this predictive control strategy is much more complicated due to its highly coupled nonlinear behavior.

Low Temperature Combustion Exploration with Negative Valve Overlap

Progressively stringent emission regulations and increasing regulatory demands on fuel economy have led to advanced combustion development. Low temperature combustion (LTC), specifically homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI), is a promising technology for reducing exhaust emissions and improving efficiency. However, its operating range is limited to low load without boosting and EGR, due to low volumetric efficiency and high pressure rise rates. In addition, effectively controlling the combustion phasing is another challenge in realizing the associated combustion gains. In this work, advanced valve control mechanisms known as continuously variable valve duration (CVVD) and continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) were used for both intake and exhaust valvetrains to enable negative valve overlap (NVO) for trapping hot exhaust residuals and to promote multipoint simultaneous ignition.

Development of a Reduced TPRF-E (Heptane/Isooctane/Toluene/Ethanol) Gasoline Surrogate Model for Computational Fluid Dynamic Applications in Engine Combustion and Sprays

Investigating combustion characteristics of oxygenated gasoline and gasoline blended ethanol is a subject of recent interest. The non-linearity in the interaction of fuel components in the oxygenated gasoline can be studied by developing chemical kinetics of relevant surrogate of fewer components. This work proposes a new reduced four-component (isooctane, heptane, toluene, and ethanol) oxygenated gasoline surrogate mechanism consisting of 67 species and 325 reactions, applicable for dynamic CFD applications in engine combustion and sprays. The model introduces the addition of eight C1-C3 species into the previous model (Li et al; 2019) followed by extensive tuning of reaction rate constants of C7 - C8 chemistry. The current mechanism delivers excellent prediction capabilities in comprehensive combustion applications with an improved performance in lean conditions.

Correlation between Sensor Performance, Autonomy Performance and Fuel-Efficiency in Semi-Truck Platoons

Semi-trucks, specifically class-8 trucks, have recently become a platform of interest for autonomy systems. Platooning involves multiple trucks following each other in close proximity, with only the lead truck being manually driven and the rest being controlled autonomously. This approach to semi-truck autonomy is easily integrated on existing platforms, reduces delivery times, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions via fuel economy benefits. Level 1 SAE fuel studies were performed on class-8 trucks operating with the Auburn Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) system, and fuel savings up to 10-12% were seen. Enabling platooning autonomy required the use of radar, global positioning systems (GPS), and wireless vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. Poor measurements and state estimates can lead to incorrect or missing positioning data, which can lead to unnecessary dynamics and finally wasted fuel.

Performance of DSRC V2V Communication Networks in an Autonomous Semi-Truck Platoon Application

Autonomy for multiple trucks to drive in a fixed-headway platoon formation is achieved by adding precision GPS and V2V communications to a conventional adaptive cruise control (ACC) system. The performance of the Cooperative ACC (CACC) system depends heavily on the reliability of the underlying V2V communications network. Using data recorded on precision-instrumented trucks at both ACM and NCAT test tracks, we provide an understanding of various effects on V2V network performance: Occlusions - non-line-of-sight (NLOS) between the Tx and Rx antenna may cause network signal loss. Rain - water droplets in the air may cause network signal degradation. Antenna position - antennas at higher elevation may have less ground clutter to deal with. RF interference - interference may cause network packet loss. GPS outage - outages caused by tree cover, tunnels, etc. may result in degraded performance. Road curvature - curves may affect antenna diversity.

Designing Thermoacoustic Engines for Automotive Exhaust Waste Heat Recovery

Thermoacoustic engine has been proven to be a promising technology for automotive exhaust waste heat recovery to save fossil fuel and reduce emission thanks to its ability to convert heat into acoustic energy which, hence, can be harvested in useful electrical energy. In this paper, based on the practical thermodynamic parameters of the automotive exhaust gas, including mass flow rate and temperature, two traveling-wave thermoacoustic engines are designed and optimized for the typical heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, respectively, to extract and reutilize their exhaust waste heat. Firstly, nonlinear thermoacoustic models for each component of a thermoacoustic engine are established in the frequency domain, by which any potential steady operating point of the engine is available.

Model Predictive Control for Engine Thermal Management System

A predictive control method for the cooling system of an engine is developed in order to improve fuel efficiency through the use of vehicle onboard GPS/Navigation system. Conventionally, in an internal combustion engine cooling system, coolant temperature is controlled from predefined maps or models depending on the engine speed, accelerator pedal position, engine torque, and/or fueling rate at that instant. Due to the instantaneous decisions taken to change target coolant temperature, road gradient changes in terrain could cause engine under-cooling on a steep uphill or over-cooling when driving downhill. The paper presents the concept of predictive coolant temperature control strategy, utilizing GPS/Navigation data to recognize driving conditions by sensing vehicle position, speed limit, and road information like elevation and grade.

Using Deep Learning to Predict the Engine Operating Point in Real-Time

The engine operating point (EOP), which is determined by the engine speed and torque, is an important part of a vehicle's powertrain performance and it impacts FC, available propulsion power, and emissions. Predicting instantaneous EOP in real-time subject to dynamic driver behaviour and environmental conditions is a challenging problem, and in existing literature, engine performance is predicted based on internal powertrain parameters. However, a driver cannot directly influence these internal parameters in real-time and can only accommodate changes in driving behaviour and cabin temperature. It would be beneficial to develop a direct relationship between the vehicle-level parameters that a driver could influence in real-time, and the instantaneous EOP. Such a relationship can be exploited to dynamically optimize engine performance.
