A special spot weld element (SWE) is presented for simplified representation of spot joints in complex structures for structural durability evaluation using the mesh-insensitive structural stress method. The SWE is formulated using rigorous linear four-node Mindlin shell elements with consideration of weld region kinematic constraints and force/moments equilibrium conditions. The SWEs are capable of capturing all major deformation modes around weld region such that rather coarse finite element mesh can be used in durability modeling of complex vehicle structures without losing any accuracy. With the SWEs, all relevant traction structural stress components around a spot weld nugget can be fully captured in a mesh-insensitive manner for evaluation of multiaxial fatigue failure.
Connectivity in ground vehicles allows vehicles to share crucial vehicle data, such as vehicle acceleration and speed, with each other. Using sensors such as radars and lidars, on the other hand, the intravehicular distance between a leader vehicle and a host vehicle can be detected. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) builds upon ground vehicle connectivity and sensor information to form convoys with automated car following. CACC can also be used to improve fuel economy and mobility performance of vehicles in the said convoy. In this paper, a CACC system is presented, where the acceleration of the lead vehicle is used in the calculation of desired vehicle speed. In addition to the smooth car following abilities, the proposed CACC also has the capability to calculate a speed profile for the ego vehicle that is fuel efficient, making it an Ecological CACC (Eco-CACC) model.
The transition from combustion engines to electric propulsion is accelerating in every coordinate of the globe. The engineers had strived hard to augment the engine performance for more than eight decades, and a similar challenge had emerged again for electric vehicles. To analyze the performance of the engine, the vector engine operating point (EOP) is defined, which is common industry practice, and the performance vector electric vehicle motor operating point (EVMOP) is not explored in the existing literature. In an analogous sense, electric vehicles are embedded with three primary components, e.g., Battery, Inverter, Motor, and in this article, the EVMOP is defined using the parameters [motor torque, motor speed, motor current]. As a second aspect of this research, deep learning models are developed to predict the EVMOP by mapping the parameters representing the dynamic state of the system in real-time.
Often, when assessing the distraction or ease of use of an in-vehicle task (such as entering a destination using the street address method), the first question is “How long does the task take on average?” Engineers routinely resolve this question using computational models. For in-vehicle tasks, “how long” is estimated by summing times for the included task elements (e.g., decide what to do, press a button) from SAE Recommended Practice J2365 or now using new static (while parked) data presented here. Times for the occlusion conditions in J2365 and the NHTSA Distraction Guidelines can be determined using static data and Pettitt’s Method or Purucker’s Method. These first approximations are reasonable and can be determined quickly. The next question usually is “How likely is it that the task will exceed some limit?”
The rise in demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, the issue of bearing currents in electric motors has become increasingly relevant. These vehicles use inverters with high frequency switch that generates the common mode voltage and current, the main factor responsible for bearing issues. In the machine structure, there are some parasitic capacitances that exist inherently. They provide a low impedance path for the generated current, which flows through the machine bearing. Investigating this problem in practical scenarios during the design stage is costly and requires great effort to measure these currents. For this reason, a strategy of analysis aided by electromagnetic simulation software can achieve desired results in terms of complexity and performance. This work proposes a methodology using Ansys Maxwell software to simulate two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) model of a three-phase permanent magnet motor with eight poles.
Metal cutting/machining is a widely used manufacturing process for producing high-precision parts at a low cost and with high throughput. In the automotive industry, engine components such as cylinder heads or engine blocks are all manufactured using such processes. Despite its cost benefits, manufacturers often face the problem of machining chips and cutting oil residue remaining on the finished surface or falling into the internal cavities after machining operations, and these wastes can be very difficult to clean. While part cleaning/washing equipment suppliers often claim that their washers have superior performance, determining the washing efficiency is challenging without means to visualize the water flow. In this paper, a virtual engineering methodology using particle-based CFD is developed to address the issue of metal chip cleanliness resulting from engine component machining operations. This methodology comprises two simulation methods.
This work represents an advanced engineering research project partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Ford Motor Company, FEV North America, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory collaborated to develop a next generation boosted spark ignited engine concept. The project goals, specified by the DOE, were 23% improved fuel economy and 15% reduced weight relative to a 2015 or newer light-duty vehicle. The fuel economy goal was achieved by designing an engine incorporating high geometric compression ratio, high dilution tolerance, low pumping work, and low friction. The increased tendency for knock with high compression ratio was addressed using early intake valve closing (EIVC), cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), an active pre-chamber ignition system, and careful management of the fresh charge temperature.
The process of assembling the bearing and crimp ring to the steering pinion shaft is intricate. The bearing is pressed into its position via the crimp ring, which is tipped inward and fully fitted into a groove on the pinion shaft. Only when the bearing is pressed to a low surface on the pinion shaft, the caulking force for the crimp ring is achieved. The final caulking distance for the crimp ring confirms the proper bearing position. Simulating this transient fitting process using CAE is a challenging topic. Key factors include controlling applied force, defining contact between bearing and pinion surface, and defining contact between crimp ring and bearing surface from full close to half open transition. The overall CAE process is validated through correlation with testing.
This work aims to develop a PA6 nanocomposite with glass fiber (GF) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) focusing on automotive parts application. Polyamide 6 is a semi-crystalline polymer that exhibits high fatigue and flexural strength, making it viable for rigorous applications. Along with the improved electrical, mechanical, thermal, and optical performance achieved in PA6 and GF-based nanocomposites, they can fill complex geometries, have great durability, and are widely utilized due to their capacity of reducing the weight of the vehicle besides a cost reduction potential. The glass fiber is a filamentary composite, usually aggregated in polymeric matrices, which aims to amplify the mechanical properties of polymers, mainly the tensile strength in the case of PA6.
Manufacturing processes impact many factors on a product. Depending on the selected method, development time, part performance and cost are affected. In the automotive sector, there is a growing demand for weight reduction due to the advent of electrification and the greenhouse gas emission regulations. In addition, geometric complexity is a challenging factor for the feasibility of mass production of parts. In this scenario, plastic materials are a very interesting option for application in various vehicle parts, since these materials can be molded by injection, vacuum forming, among others, while maintaining good mechanical properties. Almost a third of a vehicle’s parts are polymeric, making the development of these materials strategic for car manufacturers. This article investigates the impact of the presence of fiberglass in a thermoplastic automotive body part.
Polyurethane (PU) foams are versatile in automotive applications for sound absorption, due to their superior acoustic-absorbing properties, vibration damping and robustness, and seat cushioning products due to their easiness of manufacturing process and cost-effectiveness. In recent studies, micro- and nano-particles were used to improve sound absorption efficiency, these fillers help to form interconnected pore structures in the foam matrix, and this interconnection of pores is advantageous in dissipating heat generated from wave friction with the air. Some of the micro- and nano-particles used are natural fibers (like cellulose, fir, palm), silica, clay, graphene and derivatives, zeolite, and others. This review is an overview of recent advances in the incorporation of fillers in PU foams and the influence they have on the sound absorption capacity of the foams.
The rise of greenhouse gas emissions has reached historic levels, with 37 billion tons of CO2 released into the atmosphere in 2018 alone. In the European Union, 32% of these emissions come from transportation, with 73.3% of that percentage coming from vehicles. To address this problem, solutions such as cleaner fuels and more efficient engines are necessary. Artificial Intelligence can also play a crucial role in climate analysis and verification to move towards a more sustainable future. By utilizing connected vehicle data, automakers can analyze real-time vehicle performance data to identify opportunities for improvement and reduce carbon emissions. This approach benefits the environment, improves vehicle quality, and reduces engineering work time, making it a win-win solution. Connected vehicle data offers a wealth of information on vehicle performance, such as fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
In recent years, the automotive industry has seen an exponential increase in the replacement of mechanical components with electronic-controlled components or systems. engine, transmission, brake, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), lighting, driver-assist technologies, etc. are all monitored and/or controlled electronically. Connected vehicles are increasingly being used by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to collect and transmit vehicle data in real-time via the use of various sensors, actuators, and communication technologies. Vehicle telematics devices can collect and transmit data about the vehicle location, speed, fuel efficiency, State Of Charge (SOC), auxiliary battery voltage, emissions, performance, and more. This data is sent over to the cloud via cellular networks, where it can be processed and analyzed to improve their products and services by automotive companies and/or fleet management.
In the present work, five surrogate components (n-Hexadecane, n-Tetradecane, Heptamethylnonane, Decalin, 1-Methylnaphthalene) are proposed to represent liquid phase of diesel fuel, and another different five surrogate components (n-Decane, n-Heptane, iso-Octane, MCH (methylcyclohexane), Toluene) are proposed to represent vapor phase of diesel fuel. For the vapor phase, a 5-component surrogate chemical kinetic mechanism has been developed and validated. In the mechanism, a recently updated H2/O2/CO/C1 detailed sub-mechanism is adopted for accurately predicting the laminar flame speeds over a wide range of operating conditions, also a recently updated C2-C3 detailed sub-mechanism is used due to its potential benefit on accurate flame propagation simulation. For each of the five diesel vapor surrogate components, a skeletal sub-mechanism, which determines the simulation of ignition delay times, is constructed for species C4-Cn.
This is an extension of simple fuel consumption modeling toward HEV. Previous work showed that in urban driving the overhead of running an ICEV engine can use as much fuel as the traction work. The bidirectional character and high efficiency of electric motors enables HEVs to run as a BEV at negative and low traction powers, with no net input from the small battery. The ICE provides the net work at higher traction powers where it is most efficient. Whereas the network reduction is the total negative work times the system round-trip efficiency, the reduction in engine running time requires knowledge of the distribution of traction power levels. The traction power histogram, and the work histogram derived from it, provide the required drive cycle description. The traction power is normalized by vehicle mass, so that the drive trace component becomes invariant, and the road load component nearly invariant to vehicle mass.
Owing to their weight saving potential and improved flexural stiffness, metal-polymer-metal sandwich laminates are finding increasing applications in recent years. Increased use of such laminates for automotive body panels and structures requires not only a better understanding of their mechanical behavior, but also their formability characteristics. This study focuses on the formability of a metal–polymer-metal sandwich laminate that consists of AA5182 aluminum alloy as the outer skin layers and polypropylene (PP) as the inner core. The forming limit curves of Al/PP/Al sandwich laminates are determined using finite element simulations of Nakazima test specimens. The numerical model is validated by comparing the simulated results with published experimental results. Strain paths for different specimen widths are recorded.
A sophisticated finite element analysis (FEA) method for modeling interior permanent magnet (IPM) electric motors is presented. Based on this method, a coupled structural-acoustic analysis procedure was developed to simulate the motor dyno vibroacoustic responses with improved accuracy and reliability for NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) behavior prediction over a wide range of torques and frequencies under the operational electromagnetic forces. The proposed motor modeling and analysis method is detail-oriented with high fidelity in modeling the structure and complex material representation. To effectively deal with the motor stator core constructed with large numbers of electromagnetic laminae, the unit-cell approach was employed to derive the core material properties by homogenizing the laminated core as an equivalent orthotropic material. Meanwhile, the windings were modeled by capturing the precise geometry for accuracy improvement.
With the proliferation of ADAS and autonomous systems, the quality and quantity of the data to be used by vehicles has become crucial. In-vehicle sensors are evolving, but their usability is limited to their field of view and detection distance. V2X communication systems solve these issues by creating a cooperative perception domain amongst road users and the infrastructure by communicating accurate, real-time information. In this paper, we propose a novel Consolidated Object Data Service (CODS) for multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) V2X communication. This service collects information using BSM packets from the vehicular network and perception information from infrastructure-based sensors. The service then fuses the collected data, offering the communication participants with a consolidated, deduplicated, and accurate object database. Since fusing the objects is resource intensive, this service can save in-vehicle computation costs.
