Technical Challenges with on Board Monitoring

The proposed Euro 7 regulation includes On Board Monitoring, or OBM, to continuously monitor vehicles for emission exceedances. OBM relies on feedback from existing or additional sensors to identify high emitting vehicles, which poses many challenges. Currently, sensors are not commercially available for all emissions constituents, and the accuracy of available sensors is not capable enough for in use compliance determination. On board emissions models do not offer enough fidelity to determine in use compliance and require new complex model innovation development which will be extremely complicated to implement on board the vehicle. The stack up of multi-component deterioration leading to an emissions exceedance is infeasible to detect using available sensors and models.

Electric vehicle battery health aware DC fast-charging recommendation system

DC fast charging (DCFC) also referred to as L3 charging, is the fastest charging technology to replenish the drivable range of an electric vehicle. DCFC provides the convenience of faster charging time compared to L1 and L2 at the expense of potentially increased battery health degradation. It is known to accelerate battery capacity fade leading to reduced range and lifetime of the EV battery. While there are active efforts and several means to reduce the downsides of DCFC at cell chemistry level, this trade-off is still an important consideration for most battery cells in automotive propulsion applications. Since DCFC is a customer driven technology, informing drivers of the trade-off of each DCFC event can potentially result in better outcomes for the EV battery life. Traditionally, the driver is advised to limit DCFC events without providing quantifiable metrics to inform their decisions during EV charging.

Complex chassis systems operate in various environments such as low-mu surfaces and highly dynamic maneuvers. The existing metrics for lateral motion hazard by Neukum [13] and Amberkar [17] have been developed and correlated to driver behavior against disturbances on straight line driving on a dry surface, but do not cover low-mu surfaces and dynamic driving scenarios which include both linear and nonlinear region of vehicle operation. As a result, an improved methodology for evaluating vehicle yaw dynamics is needed for safety analysis. Vehicle yaw dynamics safety analysis is a methodical evaluation of the overall vehicle controllability with respect to its yaw motion and change of handling characteristic.

Sound Transmission Loss through Front of Dash and Instrumental Panel

The subsystem of front of dash (FOD) and instrument panel (IP) is a critical path to isolate the powertrain noise and road noise for vehicles. This subsystem mainly consists of sheet metal, dash mats, IP, and the components inside IP such as HVAC and wiring harness. To achieve certain level of cabin quietness, the sound transmission loss performance of this subsystem is usually used as a quantifier. In this paper, the sound transmission loss through the FOD and IP is investigated up to 10kHz, through both acoustic testing and numerical simulation. In the acoustic testing, the subsystem is cut from a vehicle and installed on the wall of two-rooms STL testing suite, with source room being reverberant and receiver room being anechoic. In the testing, various scenarios are measured to understand the contributions from different components.

3D CFD Modeling of an Electric Motor to Predict Spin Losses at Different Temperatures

With the advent of this new era of electric-driven automobiles, the simulation and virtual digital twin modeling world is now embarking on new sets of challenges. Getting key insights into electric motor behavior has a significant impact on the net output and range of electric vehicles. In this paper, a complete 3D CFD model of an Electric Motor is developed to understand its churning losses at different operating speeds. The simulation study details how the flow field develops inside this electric motor at different operating speeds and oil temperatures. The contributions of the crown and weld endrings, crown and weld end-windings, and airgap to the net churning loss are also analyzed. The oil distribution patterns on the end-windings show the effect of the centrifugal effect in scrapping oil from the inner structures at higher speeds. Also, the effect of the sump height with higher operating speeds are also analyzed.

A Data-Driven Framework of Crash Scenario Typology Development for Child Vulnerable Road Users in the U.S.

Motor vehicle crashes involving child Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) remain a critical public health concern in the United States. While previous studies successfully utilized the crash scenario typology to examine traffic crashes, these studies focus on all types of motor vehicle crashes thus the method might not apply to VRU crashes. Therefore, to better understand the context and causes of child VRU crashes on the U.S. road, this paper proposes a multi-step framework to define crash scenario typology based on the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS). A comprehensive examination of the data elements in FARS and CRSS was first conducted to determine elements that could facilitate crash scenario identification from a systematic perspective. A follow-up context description depicts the typical behavioral, environmental, and vehicular conditions associated with an identified crash scenario.

Assessing Driver Distraction: Enhancements of the ISO 26022 Lane Change Task to Make its Difficulty Adjustable

The Lane Change Task (LCT) provides a simple, scorable simulation of driving, and serves as a primary task in studies of driver distraction. It is widely accepted, but somewhat limited in functionality, a problem this project partially overcomes. In the Lane Change Task, subjects drive along a road with 3 lanes in the same direction. Periodically, signs appear, indicating in which of the 3 lanes the subject should drive, which changes from sign to sign. The software is plug-and-play for a current Windows computer with a Logitech steering/pedal assembly, even though the software was written 18 years ago. For each timestamp in a trial, the software records the steering wheel angle, speed, and x and y coordinates of the subject. A limitation of the LCT is that few characteristics of this useful software can be readily modified as only the executable code is available (on the ISO 26022 website), not the source code.

Neural Network Model to Predict the Thermal Operating Point of an Electric Vehicle

The automotive industry widely accepted the launch of electric vehicles in the global market, resulting in the emergence of many new areas, including battery health, inverter design, and motor dynamics. Maintaining the desired thermal stress is required to achieve augmented performance along with the optimal design of these components. The HVAC system controls the coolant and refrigerant fluid pressures to maintain the temperatures of [Battery, Inverter, Motor] in a definite range. However, identifying the prominent factors affecting the thermal stress of electric vehicle components and their effect on temperature variation was not investigated in real-time. Therefore, this article defines the vector electric vehicle thermal operating point (EVTHOP) as the first step with three elements [instantaneous battery temperature, instantaneous inverter temperature, instantaneous stator temperature].

Estimates of In-Vehicle Task Element Times for Usability and Distraction Evaluations

Engaging in visual-manual tasks such as selecting a radio station, adjusting the interior temperature, or setting an automation function can be distracting to drivers. Additionally, if setting the automation fails, driver takeover can be delayed. Traditionally, assessing the usability of driver interfaces and determining if they are unacceptably distracting (per the NHTSA driver distraction guidelines and SAE J2364) involves human subject testing, which is expensive and time-consuming. However, most vehicle engineering decisions are based on computational analyses, such as the task time predictions in SAE J2365. Unfortunately, J2365 was developed before touch screens were common in motor vehicles.

Real-World Driving Features for Identifying Intelligent Driver Model Parameters

Driver behavior models play a significant role in representing different driving styles and the associated relationships with traffic patterns and vehicle energy consumption in simulation studies. The models often serve as a proxy for baseline human driving when assessing energy-saving strategies that alter vehicle velocity. Such models are especially important in connectivity-enabled energy-saving strategy research because they can easily adapt to changing driving conditions like posted speed limits or change in traffic light state. While numerous driver models exist, parametric driver models provide the flexibility required to represent variability in real-world driving through different combinations of model parameters. These model parameters must be informed by a representative set of parameter values for the driver model to adequately represent a real-world driver.

Driver Identification Using Driving Behavior, Habits and Driver Characteristics

In this paper, a driver identification scheme is studied using general driver inputs such as accelerating, braking and steering behavior, in addition to the settings related to driver’s physical characteristics, such as driver’s seat position. Several drivers are selected with various ages, genders and driving skills to participate in the study. Their driving data is collected using the same test vehicle, and while driving on the same routes. This helps eliminate the inherent vehicle to vehicle variations and the impact of the route differences and enables the identification algorithm to focus on the driving behavior. The driving routes are broken down into shorter segments where the driving features are calculated and populated in these segments. To reduce the identification bias towards certain rare events in the ride, the features are reset at the beginning of each trip segment. This additionally helps to ensure that there is no spill of feature values across the segments.

Using Deep Learning to Predict the Engine Operating Point in Real-Time

The engine operating point (EOP), which is determined by the engine speed and torque, is an important part of a vehicle's powertrain performance and it impacts FC, available propulsion power, and emissions. Predicting instantaneous EOP in real-time subject to dynamic driver behaviour and environmental conditions is a challenging problem, and in existing literature, engine performance is predicted based on internal powertrain parameters. However, a driver cannot directly influence these internal parameters in real-time and can only accommodate changes in driving behaviour and cabin temperature. It would be beneficial to develop a direct relationship between the vehicle-level parameters that a driver could influence in real-time, and the instantaneous EOP. Such a relationship can be exploited to dynamically optimize engine performance.

Real World NOx Sensor Accuracy Assessment and Implications for REAL NOx Tracking

The REAL NOx regulation requires tracking and reporting of NOx emissions starting in 2022MY for both medium-duty and heavy-duty diesel vehicles with potential to be considered during the next light-duty rulemaking. The regulation includes minimum NOx mass measurement accuracy requirements of either +/−20 percent or +/− 0.1 g/bhp-hr. Existing NOx sensor technology may not be able to meet the regulated accuracy requirements especially when exposed to other sources of variation within the emissions control system. This paper provides an assessment of real-world NOx sensor accuracy and the impact of other sources of variation and noise factors on NOx measurement accuracy. Noise factors investigated include NOx sensor tolerance, exhaust flow rate estimation, NOx sensor ammonia (NH3) cross sensitivity, mass air flow (MAF) sensor accuracy, NOx sensor placement, and laboratory emissions measurement capability.

Accelerometer-Based Estimation of Combustion Features for Engine Feedback Control of Compression-Ignition Direct-Injection Engines

An experimental investigation of non-intrusive combustion sensing was performed using a tri-axial accelerometer mounted to the engine block of a small-bore high-speed 4-cylinder compression-ignition direct-injection (CIDI) engine. This study investigates potential techniques to extract combustion features from accelerometer signals to be used for cycle-to-cycle engine control. Selection of accelerometer location and vibration axis were performed by analyzing vibration signals for three different locations along the block for all three of the accelerometer axes. A magnitude squared coherence (MSC) statistical analysis was used to select the best location and axis. Based on previous work from the literature, the vibration signal filtering was optimized, and the filtered vibration signals were analyzed. It was found that the vibration signals correlate well with the second derivative of pressure during the initial stages of combustion.

Corroborative Evaluation of the Real-World Energy Saving Potentials of InfoRich Eco-Autonomous Driving (iREAD) System

There has been an increasing interest in exploring the potential to reduce energy consumption of future connected and automated vehicles. People have extensively studied various eco-driving implementations that leverage preview information provided by on-board sensors and connectivity, as well as the control authority enabled by automation. Quantitative real-world evaluation of eco-driving benefits is a challenging task. The standard regulatory driving cycles used for measuring exhaust emissions and fuel economy are not truly representative of real-world driving, nor for capturing how connectivity and automation might influence driving trajectories. To adequately consider real-world driving behavior and potential “off-cycle” impacts, this paper presents four collaborative evaluation methods: large-scale simulation, in-depth simulation, vehicle-in-the-loop testing, and vehicle road testing.

Simple Robust Formulations for Engineers: An Alternate to Taguchi S/N

Robust engineering is an integral part of the quality initiative, Design For Six Sigma (DFSS), in most companies to enable good designs and products for reliability and durability. Taguchi’s signal-to-noise ratio has been considered as a good performance index for robustness for many years. An alternate approach that is direct and simple for measuring robustness is proposed. In this approach, robustness is measured in terms of an augmented output response and it is a composite index of variation and efficiency of a system. This formulation represents an engineering design intent of a product in a statistical sense, so engineers can understand, communicate, and resonate at ease. Robust formulations are illustrated and discussed with case studies for smaller-the-better, nominal-the-best, and dynamic responses. Confirmation runs of optimization show good agreement of the augmented response with the additive predictive models.

Three Dimensional Electromagnetic and NVH Analyses of Electric Motor Eccentricity to Enhance NVH Robustness for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

Electric motor whine is one of the main noise sources of hybrid and electric vehicles. Motor air gap eccentricity due to propulsion system deflection, part tolerances and manufacturing variation is typically ignored in motor NVH design and analysis. Such eccentricity can be a dominant noise source by amplifying critical motor whine orders up to 10 dB, leading to poor NVH robustness. However, this problem cannot be explained by conventional method based on symmetric 2D approach. New 3D electromagnetic (EM) and NVH analyses are developed and validated to accurately predict air gap induced motor noise to enhance NVH robustness: First, a true 3D full 360-degree electric motor model is developed to model asymmetric air gap distribution along motor stack length. Predicted 3D EM forces are mapped to mechanical finite-element mesh over the cylindrical stator surface.

An Efficient Trivial Principal Component Regression (TPCR)

Understanding a system behavior involves developing an accurate relationship between the explanatory (predictive) variables and the output response. When the observed data is ill-conditioned with potential collinear correlations among the measured variables, some of the statistical methods such as least squared method (LSM) fail to generate good predictive models. In those situations, other methods like Principal Component Regression (PCR) are generally applicable. Additionally, the PCR reduces the dimensionality of the system by making use of covariance relationship among the variables. In this paper, an improved regression method over PCR is proposed, which is based on the Trivial Principal Components (TPC). The TPC regression (TPCR) makes use of the covariance of the output response and predictive variables while extracting principal components. A new method of selecting potential principal components for variable reduction in TPCR is also proposed and validated.

Evaluation of Different ADAS Features in Vehicle Displays

The current study presents the results of an experiment on driver performance including reaction time, eye-attention movement, mental workload, and subjective preference when different features of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) warnings (Forward Collision Warning) are displayed, including different locations (HDD (Head-Down Display) vs HUD (Head-Up Display)), modality of warning (text vs. pictographic), and a new concept that provides a dynamic bird’s eye view for warnings. Sixteen drivers drove a high-fidelity driving simulator integrated with display prototypes of the features. Independent variables were displayed as modality, location, and dynamics of the warnings with driver performance as the dependent variable including driver reaction time to the warning, EORT (Eyes-Off-Road-Time) during braking after receiving the warning, workload and subject preference.
