Longitudinal Air-Breathing Hypersonic Vehicle Nonlinear Dynamic Simulation with Different Control Inputs

Abstract The air-breathing hypersonic vehicle (AHV) holds the potential to revolutionize global travel, enabling rapid transportation to low-Earth orbit and even space within the next few decades. This study focuses on investigating the nonlinear dynamic simulation, trim, and stability analysis of a three-degrees-of-freedom (3DOF) longitudinal model of a generic AHV for variable control surface deflection, δe and δr. A simulation is developed to analyze the burstiness of the AHV’s nonlinear longitudinal behavior, considering the complete flight envelope across a wide range of Mach numbers, from M = 0 to 24, for selected stable M. The presented simulation assesses trim analysis and explores the dynamic stability of the AHV through its flight envelope and bifurcation method analysis is carried out to gain insight and validate the dynamic stability using eigen value approach.

Experimental Investigation of a Flexible Airframe Taxiing Over an Uneven Runway for Aircraft Vibration Testing

Abstract The ground vibration test (GVT) is an important phase in a new aircraft development program, or the structural modification of a certified aircraft, to experimentally determine the structural vibrational modes of the aircraft and their modal parameters. These modal parameters are used to validate and correlate the dynamic finite element model of the aircraft to predict potential structural instabilities (such as flutter), assessing the significance of modifications to research vehicles by comparing the modal data before and after the modification and helping to resolve in-flight anomalies. Due to the high cost and the extensive preparations of such tests, a new method of vibration testing called the taxi vibration test (TVT) rooted in operational modal analysis (OMA) was recently proposed and investigated as an alternative method to conventional GVT.

Designing an Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Control Model for an Air-to-Ground Collaborative System

Abstract In autonomous technology, uncrewed aircraft systems have already become the preferred platform for the research and development of flight control systems. Although they are subjected to following and satisfying complicated scenarios of control stations, this high dependency on a specific control framework limits them in their application process and reduces the flight self-organizing network. In this article, we present a developed multilayer control system protocol with the additional supportive manned aircraft layer (Tender). The novelty of the introduced model is that uncrewed aircraft systems are monitored and navigated by the tender, and then based on the suggested scheme, data flows are controlled and transferred across the network by the developed cloud–robotics approach in the ground station layer.

Aircraft Cockpit Window Improvements Enabled by High-Strength Tempered Glass

Abstract This research was initiated with the goal of developing a significantly stronger aircraft transparency design that would reduce transparency failures from bird strikes. The objective of this research is to demonstrate the fact that incorporating high-strength tempered glass into cockpit window constructions for commercial aircraft can produce enhanced safety protection from bird strikes and weight savings. Thermal glass tempering technology was developed that advances the state of the art for high-strength tempered glass, producing 28 to 36% higher tempered strength. As part of this research, glass probability of failure prediction methodology was introduced for determining the performance of transparencies from simulated bird impact loading. Data used in the failure calculation include the total performance strength of highly tempered glass derived from the basic strength of the glass, the temper level, the time duration of the load, and the area under load.

Computational Investigation of a Flexible Airframe Taxiing Over an Uneven Runway for Aircraft Vibration Testing

Abstract Ground vibration testing (GVT) is an important phase of the development, or the structural modification of an aircraft program. The modes of vibration and their associated parameters extracted from the GVT are used to modify the structural model of the aircraft to make more reliable dynamics predictions to satisfy certification authorities. Due to the high cost and the extensive preparations for such tests, a new method of vibration testing called taxi vibration testing (TVT) rooted in operational modal analysis (OMA) was recently proposed and investigated by the German Institute for Aerospace Research (DLR) as alternative to conventional GVT. In this investigation, a computational framework based on fully coupled flexible multibody dynamics for TVT is presented to further investigate the applicability of the TVT to flexible airframes. The time domain decomposition (TDD) method for OMA was used to postprocess the response of the airframe during a TVT.

Optimization of Takeaway Delivery Based on Large Neighborhood Search Algorithm

Abstract The drone logistics distribution method, with its small size, quick delivery, and zero-touch, has progressively entered the mainstream of development due to the global epidemic and the rapidly developing global emerging logistics business. In our investigation, a drone and a delivery man worked together to complete the delivery order to a customer’s home as quickly as possible. We realize the combined delivery network between drones and delivery men and focus on the connection and scheduling between drones and delivery men using existing facilities such as ground airports, unmanned stations, delivery men, and drones. Based on the dynamic-vehicle routing problem model, the establishment of a delivery man and drone with a hybrid model, in order to solve the tarmac unmanned aerial vehicle for take-out delivery scheduling difficulties, linking to the delivery man and an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm solves the model.

A Study on Secured Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Fog Computing Networks

Abstract With the recent advancement in technologies, researchers worldwide have a growing interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The last few years have been significant in terms of its global awareness, adoption, and applications across industries. In UAV-aided wireless networks, there are some limitations in terms of power consumption, data computation, data processing, endurance, and security. So, the idea of UAVs and Edge or Fog computing together deals with the limitations and provides intelligence at the network’s edge, which makes it more valuable to use in emergency applications. Fog computing distributes data in a decentralized way and blockchain also works on the principle of decentralization. Blockchain, as a decentralized database, uses cryptographic methods including hash functions and public key encryption to secure the user information. It is a prominent solution to secure the user’s information in blocks and maintain privacy.

Conceptualizing an Urban Operations Vehicle within a Comprehensive Research and Development Program

Abstract In the last decades we have witnessed an increasing number of military operations in urban environments. Complex urban operations require high standards of training, equipment, and personnel. Emergency forces on the ground will need specialized vehicles to support them in all parts and levels of this extremely demanding environment including the subterranean and interior of infrastructure. The development of vehicles for this environment has lagged but offers a high payoff. This article describes the method for developing a concept for an urban operations vehicle by characterization of the urban environment, deduction of key issues, evaluation of related prototyping, science fiction story-typing of the requirements for such a vehicle, and comparison with field-proven and scalable solutions. Embedding these thoughts into a comprehensive research and development program provides lines of development, setting the stage for further research.

Experimentally Validated Neural Networks for Sensors Redundancy Purposes in Spark Ignition Engines

Abstract In the aeronautical field, aircraft reliability is strictly dependent on propulsion systems. Indeed, a reliable propulsion system ensures the safety of pilots and passengers and the possibility of making comfortable flights. Typically, on aircraft equipped with spark ignition (SI) engines, one of the principal requirements to make them reliable is the correct balancing between the intake air mass and fuel flows. Advances in the implementation of sophisticated control and estimation strategies on SI engines allow realizing engines with improved features in terms of performance, reducing pollution emissions, and fuel consumption. Approaches based on sensor redundancy are applied to improve the reliability in measurements of the manifold air pressure (MAP) and flow (MAF) to avoid issues related to possible faults of sensors vital for the correct functioning of SI engines.

Nonlinear Observer for Estimating Gravity Vector and Flight Path Angles of a High-Performance Aircraft

Abstract This paper proposes a nonlinear observer for the estimation of gravity vector and angles with respect to velocity vector (flight path angle, bank angle) of a high-performance aircraft. The technique is computationally simpler than the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and hence is suitable for onboard implementations when the digital flight control computer (DFCC) has computational burdens. Flight test data of a highly maneuvering flight such as wind-up turns and full rolls have been used to validate the technique.

Criticality of Prognostics in the Operations of Autonomous Aircraft

Abstract This article addresses the design, testing, and evaluation of rigorous and verifiable prognostic and health management (PHM) functions applied to autonomous aircraft systems. These PHM functions—many deployed as algorithms—are integrated into a holistic framework for integrity management of aircraft components and systems that are subject to both operational degradation and incipient failure modes. The designer of a comprehensive and verifiable prognostics system is faced with significant challenges. Data (both baseline and faulted) that are correlated, time stamped, and appropriately sampled are not always readily available. Quantifying uncertainty, and its propagation and management, which are inherent in prognosis, can be difficult. High-fidelity modeling of critical components/systems can consume precious resources. Data mining tools for feature extraction and selection are not easy to develop and maintain.

Three Case Studies on Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems Near Midair Collisions with Aircraft: An Evidence-Based Approach for Using Objective Uncrewed Aerial Systems Detection Technology

Abstract Small uncrewed aircraft systems (sUAS) growth continues for recreational and commercial applications. By 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicts the sUAS fleet to number nearly 2.4 million units. As sUAS operations expand within the National Airspace System (NAS), so too does the probability of near midair collisions (NMACs) between sUAS and aircraft. Currently, the primary means of recognizing sUAS NMACs rely on pilots to visually spot and evade conflicting sUAS. Pilots may report such encounters to the FAA as UAS Sighting Reports. Sighting reports are of limited value as they are highly subjective and dependent on the pilot to accurately estimate range and altitude information. Moreover, they do not account for NMACs that an aircrew member does not spot.

A Literature Review of Simulation Fidelity for Autonomous-Vehicle Research and Development

Abstract This article explores the value of simulation for autonomous-vehicle research and development. There is ample research that details the effectiveness of simulation for training humans to fly and drive. Unfortunately, the same is not true for simulations used to train and test artificial intelligence (AI) that enables autonomous vehicles to fly and drive without humans. Research has shown that simulation “fidelity” is the most influential factor affecting training yield, but psychological fidelity is a widely accepted definition that does not apply to AI because it describes how well simulations engage various cognitive functions of human operators. Therefore, this investigation reviewed the literature that was published between January 2010 and May 2022 on the topic of simulation fidelity to understand how researchers are defining and measuring simulation fidelity as applied to training AI.

Investigation of In-Cylinder Pressure Measurement Methods within a Two-Stroke Spark Ignition Engine

Abstract This work describes an investigation of measurement techniques for the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) on a 55 cc single-cylinder, 4.4 kW, two-stroke, spark ignition (SI) engine intended for use on Group 1 and Group 2 remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs). Three different sensors were used: two piezoelectric pressure transducers (one flush mount and one measuring spark plug) for measuring in-cylinder pressure and one capacitive sensor for determining the top dead center (TDC) position of the piston. The effort consisted of three objectives: to investigate the merits of a flush mount pressure transducer compared to a pressure transducer integrated into the spark plug, to perform a parametric analysis to characterize the effect of the variability in the engine test bench controls on the IMEP, and to determine the thermodynamic loss angle for the engine.

Probabilistic Risk Assessment of Accidental Damage to Civil Aircraft Composite Structures

Abstract In view of the structural accidental events in the ongoing airworthiness stage of civil aircraft, it is necessary to conduct a risk assessment to ensure that the risk level is within an acceptable range. However, the existing models of risk assessment have not effectively dealt with the risk of accidental structural damage due to random failure. This article focuses on probabilistic risk assessment using the Transport Airplane Risk Assessment Methodology (TARAM) of accidental structural damage of civil aircraft. Based on the TARAM and probability reliability integral, a refined failure frequency probability calculation model is established to elaborate on composite structure failure frequency. A case study is analyzed for the outer wing plane of an aircraft having impact damage of composite materials. Finally, results of the risk assessment without correction and risk assessment with correction are presented for detailed visual inspection and general visual inspection.

A Near-Term Path to Assured Aerial Autonomy

Abstract Autonomy is a key enabling factor in uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) and advanced air mobility (AAM) applications ranging from cargo delivery to structure inspection to passenger transport, across multiple sectors. In addition to guiding the UAS, autonomy will ensure that they stay safe in a large number of off-nominal situations without requiring the operator to intervene. While the addition of autonomy enables the safety case for the overall operation, there is a question as to how we can assure that the autonomy itself will work as intended. Specifically, we need assurable technical approaches, operational considerations, and a framework to develop, test, maintain, and improve these capabilities. We make the case that many of the key autonomy functions can be realized in the near term with readily assurable, even certifiable, design approaches and assurance methods, combined with risk mitigations and strategically defined concepts of operations.

An Aerodynamic Equation of State—Part I: Introduction and Aerospace Applications

Abstract In subsonic aircraft design, the aerodynamic performance of aircraft is compared meaningfully at a system level by evaluating their range and endurance, but cannot do so at an aerodynamic level when using lift and drag coefficients, CL and CD , as these often result in misleading results for different wing reference areas. This Part I of the article (i) illustrates these shortcomings, (ii) introduces a dimensionless number quantifying the induced drag of aircraft, and (iii) proposes an aerodynamic equation of state for lift, drag, and induced drag and applies it to evaluate the aerodynamics of the canard aircraft, the dual rotors of the hovering Ingenuity Mars helicopter, and the composite lifting system (wing plus cylinders in Magnus effect) of a YOV-10 Bronco. Part II of this article applies this aerodynamic equation of state to the flapping flight of hovering and forward-flying insects.

A Novel Flight Dynamics Modeling Using Robust Support Vector Regression against Adversarial Attacks

Abstract An accurate Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Flight Dynamics Model (FDM) allows us to design its efficient controller in early development phases and to increase safety while reducing costs. Flight tests are normally conducted for a pre-established number of flight conditions, and then mathematical methods are used to obtain the FDM for the entire flight envelope. For our UAS-S4 Ehecatl, 216 local FDMs corresponding to different flight conditions were utilized to create its Local Linear Scheduled Flight Dynamics Model (LLS-FDM). The initial flight envelope data containing 216 local FDMs was further augmented using interpolation and extrapolation methodologies, thus increasing the number of trimmed local FDMs of up to 3,642. Relying on this augmented dataset, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) methodology was used as a benchmarking regression algorithm due to its excellent performance when training samples could not be separated linearly.
