Microstructural and Corrosion Behavior of Thin Sheet of Stainless Steel-Grade Super Duplex 2507 by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Abstract Super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) is a type of stainless steel made of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and iron (Fe). In the present work, a 1.6 mm wide thin sheet of SDSS is joined using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The ideal parameter for a bead-on-plate trial is found, and 0.216 kJ/mm of heat input is used for welding. As an outcome of the welding heating cycle and subsequent cooling, a microstructural study revealed coarse microstructure in the heat-affected zone and weld zone. The corrosion rate for welded joints is 9.3% higher than the base metal rate. Following the corrosion test, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis revealed that the welded joint’s oxide development generated a larger corrosive attack on the weld surface than the base metal surface. The percentages of chromium (12.5%) and molybdenum (24%) in the welded joints are less than those in the base metal of SDSS, as per energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis.

Effect of Turbine Speed Parameter on Exhaust Pulse Energy Matching of an Asymmetric Twin-Scroll Turbocharged Heavy-Duty Engine

Abstract The two-branch exhaust of an asymmetric twin-scroll turbocharged engine are asymmetrically and periodically complicated, which has great impact on turbine matching. In this article, a matching effect of turbine speed parameter on asymmetric twin-scroll turbines based on the exhaust pulse energy weight distribution of a heavy-duty diesel engine was introduced. First, it was built as an asymmetric twin-scroll turbine matching based on exhaust pulse energy distribution. Then, by comparing the average matching point and energy matching points on the corresponding turbine performance map, it is revealed that the turbine speed parameter of energy matching points was a significant deviation from the turbine speed parameter under peak efficiency, which leads to the actual turbine operating efficiency lower than the optimal state.

Forensic Analysis of Lithium-Ion Cells Involved in Fires

Abstract The emerging use of rechargeable batteries in electric and hybrid electric vehicles and distributed energy systems, and accidental fires involving batteries, has heightened the need for a methodology to determine the root cause of the fire. When a fire involving batteries takes place, investigators and engineers need to ascertain the role of batteries in that fire. Just as with fire in general, investigators need a framework for determining the role that is systematic, reliant on collection and careful analysis of forensic evidence, and based on the scientific method of inquiry. This article presents a systematic scientific process to analyze batteries that have been involved in a fire. It involves examining Li-ion cells of varying construction, using a systematic process that includes visual inspection, x-ray, CT scan, and possibly elemental analysis and testing of exemplars.

Optimizing Intralogistics in an Engineer-to-Order Enterprise with Job Shop Production: A Case Study of the Control Cabinet Manufacturing

Abstract This study underscores the benefits of refining the intralogistics process for small- to medium-sized manufacturing businesses (SMEs) in the engineer-to-order (ETO) sector, which relies heavily on manual tasks. Based on industrial visits and primary data from six SMEs, a new intralogistics concept and process was formulated. This approach enhances the value-added time of manufacturing workers while also facilitating complete digital integration as well as improving transparency and traceability. A practical application of this method in a company lead to cutting its lead time by roughly 11.3%. Additionally, improved oversight pinpointed excess inventory, resulting in advantages such as reduced capital needs and storage requirements. Anticipated future enhancements include better efficiency from more experienced warehouse staff and streamlined picking methods. Further, digital advancements hold promise for cost reductions in administrative and supportive roles.

Designing Manual Workplace Systems in Engineer-to-Order Enterprises to Improve Productivity: A Kano Analysis

Abstract Being an engineer-to-order (ETO) operating industry, the control cabinet industry faces difficulties in process and workplace optimizations due to changing requirements and lot size one combined with volatile orders. To optimize workplaces for employees, current literature is focusing on ergonomic designs, providing frameworks to analyze workplaces, leaving out the optimal design for productivity. This work thus utilizes a Kano analysis, collecting empirical data to identify essential design requirements for assembly workplaces, incorporating input from switchgear manufacturing employees. The results emphasize the need for a balance between ergonomics and efficiency in workplace design. Surprisingly, few participants agree on the correlation between improved processes and workspaces having a positive impact on their well-being and product quality.

A Combined Experimental and Numerical Analysis on the Aerodynamics of a Carbon-Ceramic Brake Disc

Abstract Composite ceramic brake discs are made of ceramic material reinforced with carbon fibers and offer exceptional advantages that translate directly into higher vehicle performance. In the case of an electric vehicle, it could increase the range of the vehicle, and in the case of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, it means lower fuel consumption (and consequently lower CO2 emissions). These discs are typically characterized by complex internal geometries, further complicated by the presence of drilling holes on both friction surfaces. To estimate the aerothermal performance of these discs, and for the thermal management of the vehicle, a reliable model for predicting the air flowing across the disc channels is needed. In this study, a real carbon-ceramic brake disc with drilling holes was investigated in a dedicated test rig simulating the wheel corner flow conditions experimentally using the particle image velocimetry technique and numerically.

Estimation of Lateral Velocity and Cornering Stiffness in Vehicle Dynamics Based on Multi-Source Information Fusion

Abstract To address the challenge of directly measuring essential dynamic parameters of vehicles, this article introduces a multi-source information fusion estimation method. Using the intelligent front camera (IFC) sensor to analyze lane line polynomial information and a kinematic model, the vehicle’s lateral velocity and sideslip angle can be determined without extra sensor expenses. After evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the two aforementioned lateral velocity estimation techniques, a fusion estimation approach for lateral velocity is proposed. This approach extracts the vehicle’s lateral dynamic characteristics to calculate the fusion allocation coefficient. Subsequently, the outcomes from the two lateral velocity estimation techniques are merged, ensuring rapid convergence under steady-state conditions and precise tracking in dynamic scenarios.

Energy-Efficient Dispatching of Battery Electric Truck Fleets with Backhauls and Time Windows

Abstract The adoption of battery electric trucks (BETs) as a replacement for diesel trucks has potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the freight transportation sector. However, BETs have shorter driving range and lower payload capacity, which need to be taken into account when dispatching them. This article addresses the energy-efficient dispatching of BET fleets, considering backhauls and time windows. To optimize vehicle utilization, customers are categorized into two groups: linehaul customers requiring deliveries, where the deliveries need to be made following the last-in-first-out principle, and backhaul customers requiring pickups. The objective is to determine a set of energy-efficient routes that integrate both linehaul and backhaul customers while considering factors such as limited driving range, payload capacity of BETs, and the possibility of en route recharging.

Assessing the Characterization for Multiple Cones and Cone Portions Utilizing X-Ray Diffraction in Single Point Incremental Forming

Abstract Single point incremental forming (SPIF) is a robust and new technique. In the recent research scenario, materials properties such as microstructure, micro-texture analysis, and crystal structure can be accessed through characterization non-destructive techniques, e.g., scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD is a non-destructive method for analyzing the fine structure of materials. This study explores how process variables such as wall angle, step size, feed rate, and forming speed affect the parts of large-, medium-, and small-sized truncated cones of aluminum alloy AA3003-O sheet. Several cone parts of truncated cones are used in this investigation to implement Scherrer’s method. The two primary determining factors peak height and crystallite size are assessed for additional analysis in the present research.

Optimization of Takeaway Delivery Based on Large Neighborhood Search Algorithm

Abstract The drone logistics distribution method, with its small size, quick delivery, and zero-touch, has progressively entered the mainstream of development due to the global epidemic and the rapidly developing global emerging logistics business. In our investigation, a drone and a delivery man worked together to complete the delivery order to a customer’s home as quickly as possible. We realize the combined delivery network between drones and delivery men and focus on the connection and scheduling between drones and delivery men using existing facilities such as ground airports, unmanned stations, delivery men, and drones. Based on the dynamic-vehicle routing problem model, the establishment of a delivery man and drone with a hybrid model, in order to solve the tarmac unmanned aerial vehicle for take-out delivery scheduling difficulties, linking to the delivery man and an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm solves the model.

Reducing Greenhouse Emissions from Light-Duty Vehicles: Supply-Chain and Cost-Effectiveness Analyses Suggest a Near-Term Role for Hybrids

Abstract Policy makers generally favor all-electric vehicles over hybrid-electric vehicles because of greater unit effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions. Since both systems use lithium-ion batteries, global demand for batteries is projected to grow 10-fold by 2030. If any step in the global battery supply-chain experiences bottlenecks, shortages can occur. We use a novel cost-effectiveness metric, carbon reduction per unit of battery capacity consumed, to rank emissions reductions accomplished by, alternatively, eight plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, 75 hybrid-electric vehicles, and 230 mild hybrid-electric vehicles, which have the same total battery capacity as one all-electric vehicle. Our main finding, although counterintuitive, is that, with limited battery supplies, larger reductions in carbon emissions can be accomplished by hybrids than by all-electric vehicles.

Enhancing Autonomous Vehicle Safety in Cold Climates by Using a Road Weather Model: Safely Avoiding Unnecessary Operational Design Domain Exits

Abstract This study investigates the use of a road weather model (RWM) as a virtual sensing technique to assist autonomous vehicles (AVs) in driving safely, even in challenging winter weather conditions. In particular, we investigate how the AVs can remain within their operational design domain (ODD) for a greater duration and minimize unnecessary exits. As the road surface temperature (RST) is one of the most critical variables for driving safety in winter weather, we explore the use of the vehicle’s air temperature (AT) sensor as an indicator of RST. Data from both Road Weather Information System (RWIS) stations and vehicles measuring AT and road conditions were used. Results showed that using only the AT sensor as an indicator of RST could result in a high number of false warnings, but the accuracy improved significantly with the use of an RWM to model the RST.

Contribution to the Objective Evaluation of Combined Longitudinal and Lateral Vehicle Dynamics in Nonlinear Driving Range

Abstract Since the complexity of modern vehicles is increasing continuously, car manufacturers are forced to improve the efficiency of their development process to remain profitable. A frequently mentioned measure is the consequent integration of virtual methods. In this regard, objective evaluation criteria are essential for the virtual design of driving dynamics. Therefore, this article aims to identify robust objective evaluation criteria for the nonlinear combined longitudinal and lateral dynamics of a vehicle. The article focuses on the acceleration in a turn maneuver since available objective criteria do not consider all relevant characteristics of vehicle dynamics. For the identification of the objective criteria, a generic method is developed and applied. First, an open-loop test procedure and a set of potential robust objective criteria are defined.

Closet In-Path Vehicle Detection and Recognition Algorithm Based on Camera and Millimeter-Wave Radar Fusion

Abstract The closet in-path vehicle (CIPV) is recognized relying on the detection results for road lane lines in most current ACC system, which may not work well in the poor conditions, for example, unclear road lane lines, low light level, bad weather, and so on. To solve this problem, the article proposes a sensor fusion-based CIPV recognition algorithm independent of road lane lines. First, a robust Kalman filter based on the global coordinate system is designed to fuse the millimeter-wave radar and camera targets. The fusion algorithm can dynamically adjust the covariance matrix of sensor observations to avoid the influence of anomalous observations on the fusion results. Stable detection of targets by the fusion algorithm is the basis of the CIPV recognition algorithm.

Improved Predictions of Human Rib Structural Properties Using Bone Mineral Content

Abstract Rib fractures are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Improved methods to assess rib bone quality are needed to identify at-risk populations. Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) can be used to calculate volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and bone mineral content (BMC), which may be related to rib fracture risk. The objective of this study was to determine if vBMD and BMC from QCT predict human rib structural properties. 127 mid-level (5th–7th) ribs were obtained from adult female (n = 67) and male (n = 60) postmortem human subjects (PMHS). Isolated rib QCT scans were performed to calculate vBMD and BMC.

A Parametric Thoracic Spine Model Accounting for Geometric Variations by Age, Sex, Stature, and Body Mass Index

Abstract In this study, a parametric thoracic spine (T-spine) model was developed to account for morphological variations among the adult population. A total of 84 CT scans were collected, and the subjects were evenly distributed among age groups and both sexes. CT segmentation, landmarking, and mesh morphing were performed to map a template mesh onto the T-spine vertebrae for each sampled subject. Generalized procrustes analysis (GPA), principal component analysis (PCA), and linear regression analysis were then performed to investigate the morphological variations and develop prediction models. A total of 13 statistical models, including 12 T-spine vertebrae and a spinal curvature model, were combined to predict a full T-spine 3D geometry with any combination of age, sex, stature, and body mass index (BMI). A leave-one-out root mean square error (RMSE) analysis was conducted for each node of the mesh predicted by the statistical model for every T-spine vertebra.

Abstract Pre-chamber jet ignition technologies have been garnering significant interest in the internal combustion engine field, given their potential to deliver shorter burn durations, increased combustion stability, and improved dilution tolerance. However, a clear understanding of the relationship between pre-chamber geometry, operating condition, jet formation, and engine performance in light-duty gasoline injection engines remains under-explored. Moreover, research specifically focusing on high dilution levels and passive pre-chambers with optical accessibility is notably scarce. This study serves to bridge these knowledge gaps by examining the influence of passive pre-chamber nozzle diameter and dilution level on jet formation and engine performance.

Conceptualizing an Urban Operations Vehicle within a Comprehensive Research and Development Program

Abstract In the last decades we have witnessed an increasing number of military operations in urban environments. Complex urban operations require high standards of training, equipment, and personnel. Emergency forces on the ground will need specialized vehicles to support them in all parts and levels of this extremely demanding environment including the subterranean and interior of infrastructure. The development of vehicles for this environment has lagged but offers a high payoff. This article describes the method for developing a concept for an urban operations vehicle by characterization of the urban environment, deduction of key issues, evaluation of related prototyping, science fiction story-typing of the requirements for such a vehicle, and comparison with field-proven and scalable solutions. Embedding these thoughts into a comprehensive research and development program provides lines of development, setting the stage for further research.

Cuckoo Search Optimization-Based Bilateral Filter for Multiplicative Noise Reduction in Satellite Images

Abstract Speckle noise degrades the visual appearance and the quality of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image. The reduction of speckle noise is the first step in any remote-sensing device. To improve the noisy SAR images, a variety of adaptive and nonadaptive noise reduction filters were used. In order to eliminate speckle noise present in SAR images, an adaptive cuckoo search optimization-based speckle reduction bilateral filter has been designed in this article. To test the ability to eliminate multiplicative noise, the suggested filter’s effectiveness was compared to that of several de-speckling approaches. It has been measured with different assessment metrics such as PSNR, EPI, SSIM, and ENL. When compared to conventional de-noising filters, the proposed filter shows promising results for lowering speckle noise and retaining edge properties.
