Impact of AdBlue Composition and Water Purity on Particle Number Increase

Previous studies have shown that dosing AdBlue into the exhaust system of diesel engines to reduce nitrogen oxides can lead to an increase in the number of particles (PN). In addition to the influencing factors of exhaust gas temperature, exhaust gas mass flow and dosing quantity, the dosed medium itself (AdBlue) is not considered as a possible influence due to its regulation in ISO standard 22241. However, as the standard specifies limit value ranges for the individual regulated properties and components for newly sold AdBlue, in reality there is still some margin in the composition. This paper investigates the particle number increase due to AdBlue dosing using several CPCs. The increase in PN is determined by measuring the number of particles after DPF and thus directly before dosing as well as tailpipe. Several AdBlue products from different sources and countries are measured and their composition is also analyzed with regard to the limit values regulated in the standard.

The modern automotive industry is facing challenges of ever-increasing complexity in the electrified powertrain era. On-board diagnostic (OBD) systems must be thoroughly validated and calibrated through many iterations to function effectively and meet the regulation standards. Their development and design process are more complex when prototype hardware is not available and therefore virtual testing is a prominent solution, including Software-in-the-loop (SiL) and Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations. Virtual prototype testing relying on real-time simulation models is necessary to design and test new era’s OBD systems quickly and in scale. The new fuel cell powertrain involves new and preciously unexplored fail modes. To make the system robust, simulations are required to be carried out to identify different fails.

Comparing the NVH behaviour of an innovative steel-wood hybrid battery housing design to an all aluminium design

The production of electric vehicles (EVs) has a significant environmental impact, with up to 50 % of their lifetime greenhouse gas potential attributed to manufacturing processes. The use of sustainable materials in EV design is therefore crucial for reducing their overall carbon footprint. Wood laminates have emerged as a promising alternative due to their renewable nature. Additionally, wood-based materials offer unique damping properties that can contribute to improved Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) characteristics. In comparison to conventional materials such as aluminum, ply wood structures exhibit beneficial damping properties. The loss factor of plywood structures with a thickness below 20 mm ranges from 0.013 to 0.032. Comparable aluminum structures however exhibit only a fraction of this loss factor with a range between 0.002 and 0.005.

Estimating a Viscous Damping Model for a Vibrating Panel in contact with an Acoustic Trim Enhanced with Particle Dampers.

Dampers (PDs) are passive devices employed in vibration and noise control applications. They consist of a cavity filled with particles that, when fixed to a vibrating structure, dissipate vibrational energy through friction and collisions among the particles. These devices have been extensively documented in the literature and find widespread use in reducing vibrations in structural machinery components subjected to significant dynamic loads during operation. However, their application in reducing vehicle interior sound has received, up to now, relatively little attention. Previous work by the authors has proven the effectiveness of particle dampers in mitigating vibrations in vehicle body panels, achieving a notable reduction in structure-borne noise within the vehicle cabin with an additional weight comparable to or even lower than that of bituminous damping treatments traditionally used for this purpose.

A Low-Cost System for Road Induced Tire Cavity Noise Control (RTNC)

The transition from ICE to electric power trains in new vehicles along with the application of advanced active and passive noise reduction solutions has intensified the perception of noise sources not directly linked to the propulsion system. This includes road noise as amplified by the tire cavity resonance. This resonance mainly depends on tire geometry, air temperature inside the tire and vehicle speed and is increasingly audible for larger wheels and heavier vehicles, as they are typical for current electrical SUV designs. Active technologies can be applied to significantly reduce narrow band tire cavity noise with low costs and minimal weight increase. Like ANC systems for ICE powertrains, they make use of the audio system in the vehicle. In this paper, a novel low-cost system for road induced tire cavity noise control (RTNC) is presented that reduces the tire cavity resonance noise inside a car cabin.

A Study on RANC Technique for Server-based Control Filter Optimization

Broadband active noise control algorithms require high-performance so multi-channel control to ensure high performance, which results in very high computational power and expensive DSP. When the control filter update part need a huge computational power of the algorithm is separated and calculated by the server, it is possible to reduce cost by using a low-cost DSP in a local vehicle, and a performance improvement algorithm requiring a high computational power can be applied to the server. In order to achieve the above goal, this study analyzed the maximum delay time when communication speed is low and studied response measures to ensure data integrity at the receiving location considering situations where communication speed delay and data errors occur.

On Improving CLEAN-SC Maps in The Wind Tunnel

When travelling in an open-jet wind tunnel, the path of an acoustic wave is affected by the flow causing a shift of source positions in acoustical maps of phased arrays outside the flow. The well-known approach of Amiet attempts to correct for this effect by computing travel times between microphones and map points based on the assumption that the boundary layer of the flow, the so-called shear-layer, is infinitely thin and refracts the acoustical ray in a conceptually analogy to optics. However, in reality, the turbulent nature of both the not-so thin shear-layer and the acoustic emission process itself causes an additional smearing of sources in acoustic maps, which in turn causes deconvolution methods based on these maps - the most prominent example being CLEAN-SC - to produce certain ring effects, so-called halos, around sources.

Transmission of sound under the influence of various environmental conditions

Electrified vehicles are particularly quiet, especially at low speeds due to the absence of combustion noises. This is why there are laws worldwide for artificial driving sounds to warn pedestrians. These sounds are generated using a so-called Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) which must maintain certain minimum sound pressure levels in specific frequency ranges at low speeds. The creation of the sound currently involves an iterative and sometimes time-consuming process that combines composing the sound on a computer with measuring the levels with a car on an outside noise test track. This continues until both the legal requirements and the subjective demands of vehicle manufacturers are met. To optimize this process and reduce the measurement effort on the outside noise test track, the goal is to replace the measurement with a simulation for a significant portion of the development.

CFD Analysis of Cavitation in a Flow through GERotor Pump

A gerotor pump is a positive displacement pump consisting of inner and outer rotors, with axis of inner rotor offset from axis of outer rotor. Both rotors rotate about their respective axes. The volume between the rotors changes dynamically, due to which suction and compression occurs. A gerotor pump may be subject to erosion due to cavitation. This paper details about the CFD methodology that has been used to capture cavitation bubbles which might form during the operation of gerotor pump. A full scale (3D) transient CFD model for gerotor pump has been developed using commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT. The most challenging part of this CFD flow modeling is to create a dynamic volume mesh that perfectly represents the dynamically changing rotor fluid volume of the gerotor pump. Two different approaches have been used to model this dynamic mesh analysis in the Ansys Fluent tool - one method by using the traditional UDF script and, another method by using Python automation script.

Numerical Investigation of the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Missile Geometry at Mach 4

The aim of this paper is to present a numerical analysis of high-speed flows over a missile geometry. The N1G missile has been selected for our study, which is subjected to a high-speed flow at Mach 4 over a range of Angle of attack (AoA) from 0° to 6°. The analysis has been conducted for a 3-dimensional missile model using ANSYS environment. The study contemplates to provide new insights into the missile aerodynamic performance which includes the coefficient of lift (CL) , coefficient of drag (CD) and coefficient of moment (CM) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). As there is a lack of availability of data for missile geometry, such as free stream conditions and/or the experimental data for a given Mach number, this paper intends to provide a detailed analysis at Mach 4. As the technology is advancing, there is a need for high-speed weapons (missiles) with a good aerodynamic performance, which intern will benefit in reduction of fuel consumption.

Generating Reduced-Order Image Data and Detecting Defect Map on Structural Components using Ultrasonic Guided Wave Scan

The paper presents a theoretical framework for the detection and first-level preliminary identification of potential defects on aero-structure components while employing ultrasonic guided wave based structural health monitoring strategies, systems and tools. In particular, we focus our study on ground inspection using laser-Doppler scan of surface velocity field, which can also be partly reconstructed or monitored using point sensors and actuators on-board structurally integrated. Using direct wave field data, we first question the detectability of potential defects of unknown location, size, and detailed features. Defects could be manufacturing defects or variations, which may be acceptable from design and qualification standpoint; however, those may cause significant background signal artifacts in differentiating structure progressive damage or sudden failure like impact-induced damage and fracture.

Knockdown Factor Estimation of Stiffened Cylinders under Combined Loads - A Numerical Study

Airframe section of rockets, missiles and launch vehicles are typically cylindrical in shape. The cylindrical shell is subjected to high axial load and an external pressure during its operation. The design of cylinders subjected to such loads is generally found to be critical in buckling. To minimize the weight of cylinders, it is typically stiffened with rings and stringers on the inner diameter to increase the buckling load factor. Conventionally the buckling load estimated by analytical or numerical means is multiplied by an empirical factor generally called Knockdown factor (kdf) to get the critical buckling load. This factor is considered to account for the variation between theory and experiment and is specified by handbooks or codes. In aerospace industry, NASA SP 8007 is commonly followed and it specifies the kdf as a lower bound fit curve for experimental data .

Gaganyaan programme is India's prestigious human space exploration endeavour. During the re-entry of the spacecraft, achieving the minimum terminal velocity is paramount to ensure the crew's safety upon landing. Therefore, acquiring accurate in-flight velocity data is essential for comprehensively understanding the landing dynamics and facilitating post-flight data analysis and validation. Moreover, terminal velocity plays a pivotal role in the qualification of parachute systems during platform-drop tests where the objective is to minimize the terminal velocity for safe impact. Terminal velocity also serves as a critical design parameter for the crew seat attenuation system. In addition to terminal velocity, it is equally necessary to characterize the horizontal velocities acting on the decelerating body due to various factors such as parachute sway and wind drift. This data also plays a central role in refining our systems for future enhancements.

High Frequency Unsteady Pressure Measurement System for Aerodynamic Characterization in Launch Vehicles

Unsteady pressure measurements are crucial for understanding dynamic pressure distribution changes in fluid flow fields and over object surfaces, revealing insights into complex flow phenomena induced by shock waves, vortices, boundary layer interactions, and flow separation. While ground-based wind tunnel tests have conventionally provided these insights, this paper presents an on-board system for real-time unsteady pressure data acquisition. The system's main challenge is accurately resolving high-frequency static and dynamic pressure variations over very high base pressure values. To meet this challenge, the paper highlights the importance of sigma-delta Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) due to their high resolution, oversampling techniques, noise filtering capabilities, and wide dynamic range. These ADCs seamlessly integrate with digital systems, ensuring reliable real-time pressure data acquisition during launch and flight operations.

The integration of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models enhances our ability to capture temporal dependencies, surpassing the capabilities of machine learning in isolation. These extracted maneuvers not only aid in safety but also find practical applications in system identification, air-data calibration, and performance analysis, significantly reducing pre-processing time for analysts.

Traditionally, this is done through complex numerical simulations, which are computationally expensive, resource-intensive and time-consuming, making them less than ideal for iterative design processes and rapid prototyping. Machine learning, powered by vast datasets and advanced algorithms, offers an innovative approach to predict airfoil characteristics with remarkable accuracy, speed, and cost-effectiveness. Machine learning techniques have been applied to fluid dynamics and have shown promising results. In this study, machine learning model called the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) is used to predict key aerodynamic coefficients of lift and drag for airfoils.

Comparative Analysis of Axial Flux and Radial Flux Motors for UAV Propulsion: Design and Suitability Assessment

In the architecture of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), a crucial component responsible for the propulsion system is the electric motor. Over the years, different types of electric motors, including Brushless Direct Current (BLDC), have supported the UAV’s propulsion system in diverse configurations. However, in the context of flux flow, the Radial Flux Permanent Magnet Motor (RFPMM) has been given more priority than the Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Motor (AFPMM) due to its sustainability in design and construction. Nevertheless, the AFPMM boasts higher speed, power density, lower weight, and greater efficiency than the RFPMM, because of its shorter flux path and the absence of end-turn winding. Therefore, this paper focuses on conducting a suitability analysis of an AFPMM as a shaft-connected propeller-mounted motor, with the intention of replacing the RFPMM in UAV applications.

This research employs a comprehensive methodology to explore hypersonic boundary layers' stability and transition dynamics, focusing specifically on the influence of sharp and blunt leading edges. The Stanford University Unstructured (SU2) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver is utilized to compute the mean flow over a flat plate, establishing a foundational basis for subsequent stability analysis. The extracted boundary layer profiles undergo validation against existing literature, ensuring accuracy and reliability. Further analysis is conducted using a Python code to generate input files for the Linear Stability Solver. The Linear Stability Solver analysis constitutes a crucial phase wherein the research delves into the eigenvalue spectra, identifying dominant modes and closely scrutinizing the role of the modes in the transition process within the hypersonic boundary layers.
