Peculiarities of the Design of Housing Parts of Large Direct Current Machines

Abstract In the given work the design and stress–strain calculation of housing parts of large machines during operation are considered. At the same time, both classical electromagnetic forces and technological operations necessary for mechanical processing and assembly of such objects as well as transportation processes are taken into account for the first time. The task of analyzing of the stress–strain state of the framework was solved in the three-dimensional setting using the finite element method by the SolidWorks software complex. The three-dimensional analysis of the stress–strain state of the structure for technological operations, namely tilting, lifting, and moving the large DC machines frame without poles and with poles, showed that the values of mechanical stresses that arise in the connections of the frame exceed the permissible limits, resulting in significant deformation of the structure.

Material Recognition Technology of Internal Loose Particles in Sealed Electronic Components Based on Random Forest

Abstract Sealed electronic components are the basic components of aerospace equipment, but the issue of internal loose particles greatly increases the risk of aerospace equipment. Traditional material recognition technology has a low recognition rate and is difficult to be applied in practice. To address this issue, this article proposes transforming the problem of acquiring material information into the multi-category recognition problem. First, constructing an experimental platform for material recognition. Features for material identification are selected and extracted from the signals, forming a feature vector, and ultimately establishing material datasets. Then, the problem of material data imbalance is addressed through a newly designed direct artificial sample generation method. Finally, various identification algorithms are compared, and the optimal material identification model is integrated into the system for practical testing.

Effect of Silicon Carbide/Tungsten Carbide on Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of Aluminum 6061 Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites

Abstract Aluminum hybrid composites are driving a new trend in metal matrix composites for high strength-to-weight ratio applications such as the automotive industry (piston–cylinder, brakes, shafts), aircraft (engines, airframe), aerospace (space panels), and marine (body frame). Al 6061 is chosen as the matrix for its compatibility and excellent castability in the current work. The reinforcements were silicon carbide (SiC) of size 65μ and tungsten carbide (WC) of 3–5μ due to their enhancing mechanical and corrosion behavior with low density. Composites were prepared through stir casting using different quantities of SiC wt.% 10 and 15, while WC is 0–6% by weight in 2% increments. The results show that mechanical properties such as tensile strength and hardness enhanced due to the gradual strengthening of grains leads to high wear resistance. SEM images of tensile failure show that pits, voids, cracks, burrs, and grain fractures characterize composite failure.

Prediction of Surface Finish on Hardened Bearing Steel Machined by Ceramic Cutting Tool

Abstract Prediction of the surface finish of hardened bearing steels was estimated in machining with ceramic uncoated cutting tools under various process parameters using two statistical approaches. A second-order (quadratic) regression model (MQR, multiple quantile regression) for the surface finish was developed and then compared with the artificial neural network (ANN) method based on the coefficient determination (R 2), root mean square error (RMSE), and percentage error (PE). The experimental results exhibited that cutting speed was the dominant parameter, but feed rate and depth of cut were insignificant in terms of the Pareto chart and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The optimum surface finish in machining bearing steel was achieved at 100 m/min speed, 0.1 mm/revolution (rev) feed rate, and 0.6 mm depth of cut.

Effect of NiAl Bond Layer on the Wear Resistance of an Austenitic Stainless Steel Coating Obtained by Arc Spray Process

Abstract The present investigation has been conducted to study the tribological and adhesion properties of X10CrNi18-8 austenitic stainless steel (ASTM 301) coatings deposited on aluminum alloys such as AU4G by using the arc-spraying process. These coatings were made with and without a bond-coat layer, which is constituted by NiAl. The structure of the phases that are present in coatings was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The measurements of microhardness and tribological behavior at different loads were also performed on the surface of the coatings. Adherence test was also carried out using four-point bending tests. The SEM showed that the dense microstructures of coatings have a homogeneous lamellar morphology with the presence of porosities and unmelted particles. The main phase of coating corresponds to a solid solution as a face-centered cubic (fcc).

Infrared Signature of Fixed and Variable Area C-D Nozzle of Aircraft Engine

Abstract The use of converging-diverging (C-D) variable area nozzle (VAN) in military aeroengines is now common, as it can give optimal expansion and control over engine back pressure, for a wide range of engine operations. At higher main combustion temperatures (desired for supercruise), an increase in the nozzle expansion ratio is needed for optimum performance. But changes in the nozzle throat and exit areas affect the visibility of engine hot parts as the diverging section of the nozzle is visible for a full range of view angle from the rear aspect. The solid angle subtended by engine hot parts varies with change in visibility, which affects the aircraft infrared (IR) signature from the rear aspect. This study compares the performances of fixed and variable area nozzles (FAN and VAN) in terms of engine thrust and IR signature of the engine exhaust system in the boresight for the same increase in combustion temperature.

Numerical Analysis of a Separable Metal Composite Pressure Vessel

Abstract This article presents a numerical solution to the problem of delamination in a separable Metal Composite High-Pressure Vessel (MC HPV). This problem is associated with local buckling of the inner metal shell (liner) surrounded by an outer rigid composite shell. A geometrically and physically nonlinear MC HPV deformation model is constructed considering the three-dimensional stress-strain state, real-time mode, and technological deviations inherent in real vessel designs. The model combines the deformation of the vessel end domes and the cylindrical part. A unilateral constraint is believed to exist on the interface between the liner and the composite shell, allowing the liner to delaminate from the latter when bending. Calculations are performed using the finite element method in the LS-DYNA software package in a dynamic formulation. The vessel is divided into solid finite elements such as TSHELL and SOLID.

Investigation of Hot Corrosion Behavior on QE22A-Magnesium Silver Alloy through Steaming Method

Abstract The hot corrosion studies for the die-casted magnesium (Mg) silver (Ag) alloys are carried out through the steam heating route. The Magnesium Silver (QE22A) alloy is fixed under the top lid of the pressure cooker (2 liters) and filled with water and 5% salt (NaCl) solution. The specimens are treated with different time intervals (10, 20, and 30 minutes), with the steam temperature maintained at 100°C around the specimen. The results showed an increase in the corrosion rate with the increase in the steaming time. Further, after the specimens have cooled down to room temperature, similar experiments are repeated for the second and third cycles. Here the formation of the oxide layers over the specimen has reduced the corrosion rate. The structural, surface study was carried out through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to know the corrosion behavior on the specimen.

Application of Taguchi-Based Grey System for Multi Aspects Optimization on Wire Electric Discharge Machining of Aluminum-Graphene Nanoplatelets Composites

Abstract Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite (AMMC) materials have loftier individualities and are known as an alternative material for a range of aerospace and automotive engineering applications. Reinforcement inclusion makes the components tougher, resulting in low performance of machining by traditional conservative machining practices. The present study presents a detailed review of the machinability of AMMC (Pure Aluminum + Graphene nanoplatelets) using Wire Electric Discharge Machining (WEDM). For WEDM of AMMC, a multi-objective optimization method is proposed to evaluate possible machining parameters in order to achieve better machining efficiency. Taguchi’s approach to the design of experiments is used to organize the experiments. For performing experiments, an L27 orthogonal array was selected. Five input process variables were considered for this study. The Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) is used to achieve the best features of multi-performance machining.

Performance Study of Novel Compressor Blades in a Two-Dimensional Cascade—Transonic Regime

Abstract Passengers would always like to reach their destinations with minimum commute time. Generating a higher thrust is a necessity. This implies that the turbomachinery associated with the power plant has to rotate faster and with higher efficiencies. However, high rotational speeds, mainly in the transonic regime, often lead to boundary layer separation, shocks, compressor stall, and surge. The current investigation is an attempt to reduce the abovementioned phenomena. It involves the performance study of a smoothened controlled diffusion airfoil (CDA) blade that has been optimized by “Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm” (MOGA) by altering maximum camber location and stagger angle. Inlet pressure is varied from 15 kPa to 30 kPa and the angle of attack ranging from 40.4° to 56.4°. C48-S16-BS1 is validated and considered as the baseline profile, and all other blades are collated to this.

Analytical Estimation of Infrared Signature of Converging and Converging-Diverging Nozzles of Jet Engine

Abstract Jet engine hot parts (e.g., jet nozzle) are a crucial source of aircraft’s infrared (IR) signature from the rearview, in 1.9-2.9 μm and 3-5 μm bands. The exhaust nozzle design used in a jet aircraft affects its performance and IR signature (which is also affected just by performance) from the engine layout. For supersonic aircraft (typically for M ∞ > 1.5), a converging-diverging (C-D) nozzle is preferred over a convergent nozzle for optimum performance. The diverging section of the C-D nozzle has a full range of visibility from the rearview; hence, it was not considered a prudent choice for low IR observability. This theoretical study compares the IR signature of the C-D nozzle with that of the convergent nozzle from the rearview in 1.9-2.9 μm and 3-5 μm bands for the same thrust.

Critical Inlet Pressure Prediction for Inline Piston Pumps Using Multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling

Abstract Inline piston pumps are extensively used in aircraft hydraulic systems. They can be found in engine-driven large-sized hydraulic pumps and zonal electric motor-driven mid-small sized pumps. Inline piston pumps are positive displacement pumps with variable volumetric flow controls. Positive displacement pumps can provide a variable flow rate over a wide range of suction pressures. Aircraft fly at high altitudes, and therefore these pumps have to work in extreme conditions such as low atmospheric pressure, low temperature. At low inlet pressures, the pump is highly susceptible to cavitation, i.e., insufficient filling capacity. The pressure below which pump flow rate drops drastically is known as critical inlet pressure. Extensive research has been carried out to study cavitation in inline piston pumps.

Susceptibility of Aluminum Alloy 7075 T6 to Stress Corrosion Cracking

Abstract One of the most important aluminum (Al) alloys among the 7XXX series is 7075 in the T6 temper condition. However, 7075 T6 alloy is proven to be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and has caused many service failures of airplanes. In this research, the susceptibility of 7075 T6 alloys to SCC is approached according to many variables of stress, sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration, pH variation, and aeration. The testing method selected was the three-point bending under complete immersion for a period of 40 days. The results indicate that the threshold for SCC in 7075 T6 alloy lies between 220 and 340 MPa in environments containing as low as 0.5% NaCl concentrations in both neutral and acid solutions. The cracking direction found was different from the expected using other techniques such as tensile or notched specimens, which opens a new gate for testing and monitoring SCC in the 7XXX series.

Characterization of Particulate Resulting from Oil Contamination of Aircraft Bleed Air

Abstract Possible oil contamination of aircraft bleed air is an ongoing operational issue for commercial aircraft. A sensitive and reliable method to detect contamination, especially at very low levels, has been elusive due, in part, to the lack of information about the physical nature of oil that results when entrained in the bleed air by an engine compressor. While it was expected that high shear rates in the compressors would result in very finely dispersed particles, detailed data on the size characteristics of these droplets were not available, making it difficult to develop reliable detection techniques. The goal of the reported research was to collect experimental data to provide this information. The concentration and size distribution of particles were measured for bleed air with different rates of controlled oil contamination under various engine operating conditions.

Technological Stability of the Liner in a Separable Metal Composite Pressure Vessel

Abstract The article considers one of the possible mechanisms of loading the solidity of a cylindrical metal composite high-pressure vessel (MC HPV). This mechanism manifests itself as delamination of a thin-walled metal shell (liner) from a more rigid composite shell causing local buckling. A similar effect can be detected in the manufacturing process of MC HPV, when the composite shell is formed by winding with tension a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic tape on the liner. Pressure transfer from the composite shell to the liner is carried out by the method of temperature analogy, that is, by cooling the composite shell, thermally insulated from the liner. To solve the problem of externally confined liner local buckling an approach is proposed, which is based on three points: the introduction of local technological deviations inherent in actual structures, the determination of the general stress-strain state, and a real-time deforming.

Effect of Shot Peening Conditions on the Fatigue Life of Additively Manufactured A357.0 Parts

Abstract Fatigue performance can be a critical attribute for the production of structural parts or components via additive manufacturing (AM). In comparison to the static tensile behavior of AM components, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the fatigue performance. The growing market demand for AM implies the need for more accurate fatigue investigations to account for dynamically loaded applications. A357.0 parts are processed by laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) in order to evaluate the effect of surface finishing on fatigue behavior. The specimens are surface finished by shot peening using ϕ = 0.2 and ϕ = 0.4 mm steel particles and ϕ = 0.21-0.3 mm zirconia-based ceramic particles.

Improving the Modelling of Dissociating Hydrogen Nozzles

Abstract While the design of nozzles for diatomic gases is very well established and covered by published works, the case of a diatomic gas dissociating to monatomic along a nozzle is a novel subject that needs a proper mathematical description. These novel studies are relevant to the definition of nozzles for gas-core Nuclear Thermal Rockets (NTR) that are receiving increased attention for the potential advantages they may deliver versus current generation rockets. The article thus reviews the design of the nozzles of gas-core NTR that use hydrogen as the propellant. Propellant temperatures are expected to reach 9,000-15,000 K. Above 1500 K, hydrogen begins to dissociate at low pressures, and around 3000 K dissociation also occurs at high pressures. At a given temperature, the lower the gas pressure the more molecules dissociate, and H2 → H + H. The properties of the gas are a function of the mass fractions of diatomic and monatomic hydrogen x H2 and x H = 1 − x H2.

Erosion Wear Response of Linz-Donawitz Slag Coatings: Parametric Appraisal and Prediction Using Imperialist Competitive Algorithm and Neural Computation

Abstract Slag, generated from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) or Linz-Donawitz (LD) converter, is one of the recyclable wastes in an integrated steel plant. The present work aims at utilization of waste LD slag to develop surface coatings by plasma spraying technique. This study reveals that LD slag can be gainfully used as a cost-effective wear-resistant coating material. A prediction model based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is also proposed to predict the erosion performance of these coatings. The 2.27% error shows that ANN successfully predicts the erosion wear rate of the coatings both within and beyond the experimental domain. In addition to it, a novel optimization algorithm called imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is used to obtain minimum erosion wear rate of 12.12 mg/kg.
