Fault Detection in Machine Bearings using Deep Learning - LSTM

In today's industrial sphere, machines are the key supporting various sectors and their operations. Over time, due to extensive usage, these machines undergo wear and tear, introducing subtle yet consequential faults that may go unnoticed. Given the pervasive dependence on machinery, the early and precise detection of these faults becomes a critical necessity. Detecting faults at an early stage not only prevents expensive downtimes but also significantly improves operational efficiency and safety standards. This research focuses on addressing this crucial need by proposing an effective system for condition monitoring and fault detection, leveraging the capabilities of advanced deep learning techniques. The study delves into the application of five diverse deep learning models—LSTM, Deep LSTM, Bi LSTM, GRU, and 1DCNN—in the context of fault detection in bearings using accelerometer data. Accelerometer data is instrumental in capturing vital vibrations within the machinery.

Optimization of Cold Start Performance of Diesel Engine Under Low Temperature and High Altitude Environment

The problem of keeping the stable starting performance of diesel engine under high altitude and low temperature conditions has been done a lot of research in the field of diesel engine, but there is a lack of research on extreme conditions such as above 2000 meters above sea level and below 0°C. Aiming at solving the cold start problem of diesel engine in extreme environment, a set of chamber system of cold start environment diesel engine was constructed to simulate environment of 3000m altitude and -20°C. A series of experimental research was conducted on cold start efficiency optimization strategy of a certain type of diesel engine at 3000m altitude and -20°C. In parallel, a diesel engine model was constructed through Chemkin to explore the influence of the three parameters of compression ratio, stroke length, and fuel injection advance angle on the first cold start cycle of diesel engine at 4000m altitude and -20°C.

Impact of a Split-Injection Strategy on Energy-Assisted Compression-Ignition Combustion with Low Cetane Number Sustainable Aviation Fuels

The influence of a split-injection strategy on energy-assisted compression-ignition (EACI) combustion of low-cetane number sustainable aviation fuels was investigated in a single-cylinder direct-injection compression-ignition engine using a ceramic ignition assistant (IA). Two low-cetane number fuels were studied: a low-cetane number alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with a derived cetane number (DCN) of 17.4 and a binary blend of ATJ with F24 (Jet-A fuel with military additives, DCN 45.8) with a blend DCN of 25.9 (25 vol.% F24, 75 vol.% ATJ). A pilot injection mass sweep (3.5-7.0 mg) with constant total injection mass and an injection dwell sweep (1.5-3.0 ms) with fixed main injection timing was performed. Increasing pilot injection mass was found to reduce cycle-to-cycle combustion phasing variability by promoting a shorter and more repeatable combustion event for the main injection with a shorter ignition delay.

The tire cornering stiffness plays a vital role in the functionality of vehicle dynamics control systems, particularly when it comes to stability and path tracking controllers. This parameter relies on various external variables such as the tire/ambient temperature, tire wear condition, the road surface state, etc. Ensuring a reliable estimation of the cornering stiffness value is crucial for control systems. This ensures that these systems can accurately compute actuator requests in a wide range of driving conditions. In this paper, a novel estimation method is introduced that relies solely on standard vehicle sensor data, including data such as steering wheel angles, longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, yaw rate, and vehicle speed, among others. Initially, the vehicle's handling characteristics are deduced by estimating the understeer gradient.

Sea-Level Characterization of Electrically Assisted Turbocharger for Use on Aviation Diesel Engine

Airborne compression-ignition engine operations differ significantly from those in ground vehicles, both in mission requirements and in operating conditions. Unique challenges exist in the aviation space, and electrification technologies originally developed for ground applications may be leveraged to address these considerations. One such technology, electrically assisted turbochargers (EATs), have the potential to address the following: increase the maximum system power output, directly control intake manifold air pressure, and reignite the engine at altitude conditions in the event of an engine flame-out. Sea-level experiments were carried out on a two-liter, four-cylinder compression-ignition engine with a commercial-off-the-shelf EAT that replaced the original turbocharger. The objective of these experiments was to demonstrate the technology, assess the performance, and evaluate control methods at sea level prior to altitude experimentation.

Development of Fe-SiC Complex Part of Ball Screw Assembly by Direct Metal Laser Sintering

Additive manufacturing (AM) is currently the most sought-after production process for any complex shaped geometries commonly encountered in Aerospace Industries. Although, several technologies of AM do exits, the most popular one is the Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) owing to its high versatility in terms of precision of geometries of components and guarantee of highest levels of reduction in production time. Further, metallic component of any complex shape such as Gas Turbine Blades can also be developed by this technique. In the light of the above, the present work focuses on development of iron silicon carbide (Fe-SiC) complex part for ball screw assembly using DMLS technique. The optimized process parameters, hardness and wear resistance of the developed iron-SiC composite will be reported. Further, since the material chosen is a metallic composite one, the effect of SiC on the thermal stresses generated during the DMLS processing of Fe-SiC composite will also be discussed.
