Design of an Alternative Hardware Abstraction Layer for Embedded Systems with Time-Controlled Hardware Access

This paper proposes a novel approach to the design of a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) specifically tailored to embedded systems, placing a significant emphasis on time-controlled hardware access. The general concept and utilization of a HAL in industrial projects are widespread, serving as a well-established method in embedded systems development. HALs enhance application software portability, simplify underlying hardware usage by abstracting its inherent complexity and reduce overall development costs through software reusability. Beyond these established advantages, this paper introduces a conceptual framework that addresses critical challenges related to debugging and mitigates input-related problems often encountered in embedded systems. This becomes particularly pertinent in the automotive context, where the intricate operational environment of embedded systems demands robust solutions. The HAL design presented in this paper mitigates these issues.

Reduction of Flow-induced Noise in Refrigeration Cycles

In electrified vehicles, auxiliary units can be a dominant source of noise, one of which is the refrigerant scroll compressor. Compared to vehicles with combustion engines, e-vehicles require larger refrigerant compressors, as in addition to the interior, also the battery and the electric motors have to be cooled. Currently, scroll compressors are widely used in the automotive industry, which generate one pressure pulse per revolution due to their discontinuous compression principle. This results in speed-dependent pressure fluctuations as well as higher-harmonic pulsations that arise from reflections. These fluctuations spread through the refrigeration cycle and cause the vibration excitation of refrigerant lines and heat exchangers. The sound transmission path in the air conditioning heat exchanger integrated in the dashboard is particularly critical. Various silencer configurations can be used to dampen these pulsations.

Software-supported Processes for Aerodynamic Homologation of Vehicles

Homologation is an important process in vehicle development and aerodynamics a main data contributor. The process is heavily interconnected: Production planning defines the available assemblies. Construction defines their parts and features. Sales defines the assemblies offered in different markets, where Legislation defines the rules applicable to homologation. Control engineers define the behavior of active, aerodynamically relevant components. Wind tunnels are the main test tool for the homologation, accompanied by surface-area measurement systems. Mechanics support these test operations. The prototype management provides test vehicles, while parts come from various production and prototyping sources and are stored and commissioned by logistics. Several phases of this complex process share the same context: Production timelines for assemblies and parts for each chassis-engine package define which drag coefficients or drag coefficient contributions shall be determined.

The modern automotive industry is facing challenges of ever-increasing complexity in the electrified powertrain era. On-board diagnostic (OBD) systems must be thoroughly validated and calibrated through many iterations to function effectively and meet the regulation standards. Their development and design process are more complex when prototype hardware is not available and therefore virtual testing is a prominent solution, including Software-in-the-loop (SiL) and Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations. Virtual prototype testing relying on real-time simulation models is necessary to design and test new era’s OBD systems quickly and in scale. The new fuel cell powertrain involves new and preciously unexplored fail modes. To make the system robust, simulations are required to be carried out to identify different fails.

The influence of design operating conditions on engine coolant pump absorption in real driving scenarios.

Reducing CO2 emissions in on-the-road transport is important to limit global warming and follow a green transition towards net zero Carbon by 2050. In a long-term scenario, electrification will be the future of transportation. However, in the mid-term, the priority should be given more strongly to other technological alternatives (e.g., decarbonization of the electrical energy and battery recharging time). In the short- to mid-term, the technological and environmental reinforcement of ICEs could participate in the effort of decarbonization, also matching the need to reduce harmful pollutant emissions, mainly during traveling in urban areas. Engine thermal management represents a viable solution considering its potential benefits and limited implementation costs compared to other technologies. A variable flow coolant pump actuated independently from the crankshaft represents the critical component of a thermal management system.

Numerical Study of Application of Gas Foil Bearings in High-Speed Drivelines

Gas bearings are an effective solution to high-speed rotor applications for its contamination free, reduced maintenance and higher reliability. However, low viscosity of gas leads to lower dynamic stiffness and damping characteristics resulting in low load carrying capacity and instability at higher speeds. Gas bearings can be enhanced by adding a foil structure commonly known as gas foil bearings (GFBs), whose dynamic stiffness can be tailored by modifying the geometry and the material properties resulting in better stability and higher load carrying capacity. A detailed study is required to assess the performance of high-speed rotor systems supported on GFBs, therefore in this study a bump type GFB is analyzed for its static and dynamic characteristics. The static characteristics are obtained by solving the non-linear Reynolds equation through an iterative procedure.

Experimental Study of the Acoustics of a Electric Refrigerant Scroll Compressor

Compared to vehicles with combustion engines, e-vehicles require larger refrigerant compressors, as in addition to the interior, the battery and the electric motors must be cooled. The compressor causes the acoustic excitation of other refrigeration circuit components and the chassis via pressure pulsations and vibration transmission, as well as emitting airborne sound directly. Sound measurements have been performed in an anechoic chamber to investigate the influence of operating conditions on the acoustics of an electric scroll compressor. This paper investigates the influence of the operating conditions on compressor acoustics and shows that rotation speed is the main factor influencing compressor noise. The sound spectra of fluid, structure and airborne noise are dominated by speed-dependent, tonal components.

Structural Dynamic Modelling of HVAC Systems

The structure-, fluid- and air-borne excitation generated by HVAC compressors can lead to annoying noise and low frequency vibrations in the passenger compartment. These noises and vibrations are of great interest in order to maintain high passenger comfort of EV vehicles. The main objective of this paper is to develop a numerical model of the HVAC system and to simulate the structure-borne sound transmission from the compressor through the HVAC hoses to the vehicle in a frequency range up to 1 kHz. An existing automotive HVAC system was fully replicated in the laboratory. Vibration levels were measured on the compressor and on the car body side of the hoses under different operational conditions. Additional measurements were carried out using external excitation of the compressor in order to distinguish between structure- and fluid-borne transmission. The hoses were experimentally characterised with regard to their structure-borne sound transmission characteristics.

Active Vibration Control of Road Noise Path Using Piezoelectric Stack Actuators and Filtered-X LMS Algorithm for Electric Vehicle Applications

This paper presents the novel active vibration control (AVC) system that controls vehicle body vibration to reduce the structural borne road noise. As a result of vehicle noise testing in an electric vehicle, the predominant frequency of vehicle body vibration that worsens interior noise is in the range of 150-250Hz. Such vibration in that frequency range, commonly masked in engine vibrations, are hard to neglect for electric vehicles. The vibration source of that frequency is the resonance of tire cavity mode. Resonator or absorption material has been applied inside the tire for the control of cavity noise as a passive method. They require an increment of weight and cost. Therefore, a novel method is necessary. The vibration amplified by resonance of cavity mode is transferred to the vehicle body throughout the suspension system. To reduce the vibration, AVC system is applied to the suspension mount.

Broadband active noise control algorithms require high-performance so multi-channel control to ensure high performance, which results in very high computational power and expensive DSP. When the control filter update part need a huge computational power of the algorithm is separated and calculated by the server, it is possible to reduce cost by using a low-cost DSP in a local vehicle, and a performance improvement algorithm requiring a high computational power can be applied to the server. In order to achieve the above goal, this study analyzed the maximum delay time when communication speed is low and studied response measures to ensure data integrity at the receiving location considering situations where communication speed delay and data errors occur.

Influences of High-Pressure Pump and Injector Nozzle Geometry on Hydraulics Characteristics of a Mechanical Diesel Direct-Injection System

The geometry of high-pressure pump and injector nozzles crucially influences hydraulic behaviors (e.g., the start of injection, the pressure profiles developed in the high-pressure line, needle lift, and injection rates) in diesel engines. These factors, in turn, significantly impact fuel atomization, fuel–air mixing, combustion quality, and the formation of emissions. The main geometry parameters such as plunger diameter and the number and diameter of nozzles lead to the system complexity, requiring careful analysis, design, and calibration. In this study, a high-speed shadowgraph system and a high-resolution pressure recording system were developed to capture the start of injection, spray structure, and pressure profiles in the high-pressure line. Additionally, a model was developed using GT-Fuel package built within the GT-Suite of simulation tools to explore different plunger diameters and numbers and diameters of injector nozzles.

Uncrewed Aerial vehicles are useful for a multitude of applications in today’s age, covering a wide variety of fields such as defense, environmental science, meteorology, emergency responders, search and rescue operations, entertainment robotics, etc. Different types of aircrafts such as fixed wing UAVs, rotor wing UAVs are used for the mentioned applications depending upon the application requirements. One such category of UAVs is the lighter-than-air aircrafts, that provide their own set of advantages over the other types of UAVs. Blimps are among the participants of the lighter-than-air category that are expected to offer advantages such as higher endurance and range, and safer and more comfortable Human-machine-Interaction, etc. as compared to fixed wing and rotor wing UAVs due to their design. A ROS (Robot Operating System) based control system was developed for controlling the blimp.

Centrifugal Compressor Map Prediction Based on Geometrical Parameters with Invariant Coefficients

In the present work, a new methodology for predicting the performance of centrifugal compressors is developed. The proposed method differs from existing methods found in literature by gathering principal losses in three parameters: two constants and one variable, which is a function of the compressor wheel geometrical characteristics. As those parameters are constants for a given centrifugal compressor, there is no need for additional corrective parameters in order to obtain coherent results. Indeed, the proposed methodology does not depend on the choice of the slip factor correlation for the prediction of the correct pressure ratio. However, the choice of slip factor influences the efficiency computation. The prediction of the compressor maps for two full stage centrifugal compressors is presented and they show good agreement while compared with manufacturer’s data obtained from gas stand measurements.

Typically, modern automotive engine designs include separate cylinder heads and cylinder blocks and utilize a multilayer steel head gasket (MLS) to seal the resulting joint. Cylinder head bolts are used to hold the joint together and the non-linear properties of head gasket provide capability to seal the movement within the joint, which is essential for engine durability and performance. The current design of cylinder head gasket mainly evaluates the sealing performance in hot and cold state through finite element analysis. The sealing performance of cylinder head gasket is mainly determined by sealing pressure, fatigue and lateral movement in the joint, which have been widely studied [1]. However, no one has been involved in the study of factors affecting sealing pressure and lateral movement in the joint.

Adaptive cruise control is one of the key technologies in advanced driver assistance systems. However, improving the performance of autonomous driving systems requires addressing various challenges, such as maintaining the dynamic stability of the vehicle during the cruise process, accurately controlling the distance between the ego vehicle and the preceding vehicle, resisting the effects of nonlinear changes in longitudinal speed on system performance. To overcome these challenges, an adaptive cruise control strategy based on the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model with a focus on ensuring vehicle lateral stability is proposed. Firstly, a collaborative control model of adaptive cruise and lateral stability is established with desired acceleration and additional yaw moment as control inputs. Then, considering the effect of the nonlinear change of the longitudinal speed on the performance of the vehicle system.

Intelligent vehicle-to-everything connectivity is an important development trend in the automotive industry. Among various active safety systems, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) has garnered widespread attention due to its outstanding performance in reducing traffic accidents. AEB effectively avoids or mitigates vehicle collisions through automatic braking, making it a crucial technology in autonomous driving. However, the majority of current AEB safety models exhibit limitations in braking modes and fail to fully consider the overall vehicle stability during braking. To address these issues, this paper proposes an improved AEB control system based on a risk factor (AERF). The upper-level controller introduces the risk factor (RF) and proposes a multi-stage warning/braking control strategy based on preceding vehicle dynamic characteristics, while also calculating the desired acceleration.

Rubber mount as an important element can reduce the vibration transmitted by the engine to the frame. And under small and medium deformation conditions, Mooney-Rivlin model can well describe the mechanical properties of the rubber mount. The accurate parameters of Mooney-Rivlin model are the basis of describing the mechanical properties of the mount. First, taking powertrain rubber mount as the research object, the influence of preload on the static characteristics of the mount is studied by the preload test rig. Second, Particle swarm optimization-Back propagation neural network (PSO-BPNN) model and Back propagation neural network (BPNN) model was established. After the number and step length of hidden layer neurons were determined, the prediction accuracy of the two models is compared.

Modeling and Time Discrete Characteristics Analysis of the Oil Filling Process of Wet Clutch for a Specialized Vehicle’s Automatic Transmission

The automatic transmission of a specialized vehicle encountered challenges in achieving stable oil filling time due to the considerable variability of related parameters and the non-linear trends in the variation of individual product parameters over time. To investigate the underlying causes of this phenomenon and enhance the oil filling efficiency, a detailed model of the clutch oil filling process during gear shifting was established in this paper, which included dynamic models of the key components such as the hydraulic system, clutch, proportional valve, and oil passages. Physical experiments were performed on the test bench to compare with the simulation results. The results showed that the correlation between the simulation model and the test bench was well, which verified the effectiveness of the simulation model.

Research on the Control Strategy of Electric Vehicle Active Suspension Based on Fuzzy Theory

The performance of suspension system has a direct impact on the riding comfort and smoothness. For the traditional suspension can not effectively alleviate the impact of road surface and the poor anti-vibration performance, The dynamics model of vehicle suspension system is established, and the control model of vehicle four-degree-of-freedom active suspension is designed with fuzzy control strategy. On this basis, a comprehensive simulation model of the control model of vehicle active suspension coupled with road excitation is established. and the ride comfort of vehicles under different types of suspension are tested through Simulink. The simulation results show that compared with the passive suspension, the reduction of vehicle acceleration and dynamic deformation of the active suspension controlled by fuzzy PID can reach 33.76% and 22.45%. and the reduction of pitch Angle speed and dynamic load of the active suspension controlled by fuzzy PID can reach 16.18% and 10.72%.

A Path Tracking Method for an Unmanned Bicycle Based on the Body-Fixed Coordinate Frame

The present study introduces a novel approach for achieving path tracking of an unmanned bicycle in its local body-fixed coordinate frame. A bicycle is generally recognized as a multibody system consisting of four distinct rigid bodies, namely the front wheel, the front fork, the body frame, and the rear wheel. In contrast to most previous studies, the relationship between a tire and the road is now considered in terms of tire forces rather than nonholonomic constraints. The body frame has six degrees of freedom, while the rear wheel and front fork each have one degree of freedom relative to the body frame. The front wheel exhibits a single degree of freedom relative to the front fork. A bicycle has a total of nine degrees of freedom.
