Towards Future Vehicle Diagnostics in Software-Defined Vehicles

Software will lead the development and life cycle of vehicles in the future. Nowadays, more and more software is being integrated into a vehicle, evolving it into a Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV). Automotive High Performance Computers (HPCs) serve as enablers by providing more computing infrastructure which can be flexibly used inside a vehicle. However, this leads to a complex vehicle system that needs to function today and in the future. Detecting and rectifying failures as quickly as possible is essential, but existing diagnostic approaches based on Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are not designed for such complex systems and lack of flexibility. DTCs are predefined during vehicle development and changes to vehicle diagnostics require a large amount of modification work. Moreover, diagnostics are not intended to handle dynamically changing software systems and have shortcomings when applied to in-vehicle software systems.

The automotive industry is continuously evolving, demanding innovative approaches to enhance testing methodologies and preventive identify potential issues. This paper proposes an advancement test approach in the area of the overall vehicle system included steering system and power train on a “Road to Rig” test bench. The research aims to revolutionize the conventional testing process by identifying faults at an early stage and eliminating the need to rely solely on field tests. The motivation behind this research is to optimize the test bench setup and bring it even closer to real field tests. Key highlights of the publication include the introduction of an expanded load spectrum, incorporating both steering angle and speed parameters along the test track. The load includes different route and driving profiles like on a freeway, overland and city drive in combination with the steering angles.

Experimental Study of Lignin Fuels for CI Engines

This study explores the feasibility of using a sustainable lignin-based fuel, consisting of 44 % lignin, 50 % ethanol, and 6 % water, in conventional compression ignition (CI) marine engines. Through experimental evaluations on a modified small-bore CI engine, we identified the primary challenges associated with lignin-based fuel, including engine startup and shutdown issues due to solvent evaporation and lignin solidification inside the fuel system, and deposit formation on cylinder walls leading to piston ring seizure. To address these issues, we developed a fuel switching system transitioning from lignin-based fuel to cleaning fuel with 85 vol% of acetone, 10 vol% of water and 5 vol% of ignition improving additive, effectively preventing system clogs.

Making modal analysis easy and more reliable – Reference points identification by experimental prestudy

Though modal analysis is a common tool to evaluate the dynamic properties of a structure, there are still many individual decisions to be made during the process which are often based on experience and make it difficult for occasional users to gain reliable and correct results. One of those experience-based choices is the correct number and placement of reference points. This decision is especially important, because it must be made right in the beginning of the process and a wrong choice is only noticeable in the very end of the process. Picking the wrong reference points could result in incomplete modal analysis outcomes, as it might make certain modes undetectable, compounded by the user's lack of awareness about these missing modes. In the paper an innovative approach will be presented to choose the minimal number of mandatory reference points and their placement.

Transmission of sound under the influence of various environmental conditions

Electrified vehicles are particularly quiet, especially at low speeds due to the absence of combustion noises. This is why there are laws worldwide for artificial driving sounds to warn pedestrians. These sounds are generated using a so-called Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) which must maintain certain minimum sound pressure levels in specific frequency ranges at low speeds. The creation of the sound currently involves an iterative and sometimes time-consuming process that combines composing the sound on a computer with measuring the levels with a car on an outside noise test track. This continues until both the legal requirements and the subjective demands of vehicle manufacturers are met. To optimize this process and reduce the measurement effort on the outside noise test track, the goal is to replace the measurement with a simulation for a significant portion of the development.

Assessment of Condensation Particle Counter-Based Portable Solid Particle Number System for Applications with High Water Content in Exhaust

The Particle Number–Portable Emission Measurement System (PN-PEMS) came into force with Euro VI Phase E regulations starting January 1, 2022. However, positive ignition (PI) engines must comply from January 1, 2024. The delay was due to the unavailability of the PN-PEMS system that could withstand high concentrations of water typically present in the tailpipe (TP) of CNG vehicles, which was detrimental to the PN-PEMS systems. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the condensation particle counter (CPC)-based PN-PEMS measurement capabilities that was upgraded to endure high concentration of water. The PN-PEMS measurement of solid particle number (SPN23) greater than 23 nm was compared against the laboratory-grade PN systems in four phases. Each phase differs based upon the PN-PEMS and PN system location and measurements were made from three different CNG engines. In the first phase, systems measured the diluted exhaust through constant volume sampler (CVS) tunnel.

Predictive Maintenance of a Ground Vehicle Using Digital Twin Technology

The safety and reliability of ground vehicles is a motivating factor for periodic maintenance which includes fluids, lubrication, cleaning, repairs, and general observation of key subsystems. The scheduling of maintenance activities can occur at different rates such as daily, weekly, or perhaps operating time based on collected historical data and general guidelines. The availability of a digital twin (DT), which offers a virtual representation of the vehicle behavior, enables virtual system simulations for different operating cycles to explore the dynamic behavior. When field operating fleet data can be integrated with the digital twin estimates, then this supplemental information can be combined with the existing maintenance plan to provide a more comprehensive approach. In this paper, a digital twin with a statistical based predictive maintenance strategy is investigated for a wheeled military ground vehicle.

Evaluating Vehicle Response Through Non-Traditional Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking Scenarios

Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking (P-AEB) is a technology designed to avoid or reduce the severity of vehicle to pedestrian collisions. This technology is currently assessed and evaluated via EuroNCAP and similar procedures in which a pedestrian test target is crossing the road, walking alongside the road, or stationary in the forward vehicle travel path. While these assessment methods serve the purpose of providing cross-comparison of technology performance in a standardized set of scenarios, there are many scenarios which could occur which are not considered or studied. By identifying and performing non-EuroNCAP, non-standardized scenarios using similar methodology, the robustness of P-AEB systems can be analyzed. These scenarios help identify areas of further development and consideration for future testing programs. Three scenarios were considered as a part of this work: straight line approach, curved path approach, and parking lot testing.

Effect of Aftermarket Modifications on ADAS Functionality – 2022 Chevrolet Silverado Light Vehicle

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are becoming common on passenger cars and pickup trucks. Accordingly, the manufacturers and installers of aftermarket equipment for these vehicles have an interest in confirming the functionality of ADAS when their equipment is put in place. However, there is very little publicly available information on the effect of aftermarket components on original equipment ADAS. To address this deficiency, a research program was undertaken in which a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 light truck was tested in four different hardware configurations, including stock as well as three modified conditions. Aftermarket modifications to the vehicle consisted of increased tire diameters, a level kit, and two different lift kits. A series of physical tests were carried out to evaluate the ADAS performance of the vehicle with modifications.

Improving CRC Fault Detection Probability in AUTOSAR E2E Based on Known Hamming Weights

To develop safe vehicles, system development must be performed in compliance with functional safety. Functional safety considers situations where failures could make a vehicle unsafe, and it requires the inclusion of mechanisms to detect and mitigate these failures, even though they may not always be detected with 100% certainty — referred as diagnostic coverage (DC). Therefore, some faults, called residual faults, might go undetected. In the realm of functional safety from a communication perspective, industry standards define nine distinct fault modes. The detection of these faults is crucial, especially in the widely used AUTOSAR automotive operating system. AUTOSAR E2E (End-to-End Communication Protection) serves as a communication fault detection mechanism utilizing three mechanisms: counters, timers, and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) to address the nine fault modes. Especially, determining the DC for CRC can be challenging and often requires a conservative evaluation approach.

Diagnostic Communication with Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Using ISO 14229-5 (UDS on IP) and SAE J1979-3 (ZEV on UDS)

SAE J1979 and its “OBD Modes” served for the protection of our environment against harmful pollutants for decades, but due to regulatory adoption of Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS), SAE J1979 has now become a multiple part document series: SAE J1979 will be replaced by SAE J1979-2 for vehicles with combustion engines (ICEs) and by SAE J1979-3 for Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) propulsion systems. For ZEVs, emission-related failures will be replaced by ZEV propulsion-related failures. Both SAE J1979-2 and -3 are variants of ISO 14229 (UDS) but limited to emission-related and ZEV propulsion-related failures, respectively, and associated diagnostic data. These new diagnostic communication protocols are required by California Air Resources Board (CARB) but do not support vehicle-manufacturer-specific diagnostic applications like calibration or flash programming.

Closed Track Testing To Assess Prototype Level-3 Autonomous Vehicle Readiness for Public Road Deployment

Most of the Automated Driving Systems (ADS) technology development is targeting urban areas; there is still much to learn about how ADS will impact rural transportation. The DriveOhio team deployed level-3 ADS-equipped prototype vehicles in rural Ohio with the goal of discovering technical challenges for ADS deployment in such environments. However, before the deployment on public roads, it was essential to test the ADS-equipped vehicle for their safety limitations. At Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC Inc.) proving grounds, we tested one such prototype system on a closed test track with soft targets and robotic platforms as surrogates for other road users. This paper presents an approach to safely conduct testing for ADS prototype and assess its readiness for public road deployment. The main goal of this testing was to identify a safe Operational Design Domain (ODD) of this system by gaining better understanding of the limitations of the system.

Virtual Methodology for Active Force Cancellation in Automotive Application Using Mass Imbalance & Centrifugal Force Generation (CFG) Principle

A variety of structures resonate when they are excited by external forces at, or near, their natural frequencies. This can lead to high deformation which may cause damage to the integrity of the structure. There have been many applications of external devices to dampen the effects of this excitation, such as tuned mass dampers or both semi-active and active dampers, which have been implemented in buildings, bridges, and other large structures. One of the active cancellation methods uses centrifugal forces generated by the rotation of an unbalanced mass. These forces help to counter the external excitation force coming into the structure. This research focuses on active force cancellation using centrifugal forces (CFG) due to mass imbalance and provides a virtual solution to simulate and predict the forces required to cancel external excitation to an automotive structure. This research tries to address the challenges to miniaturize the CFG model for a body-on-frame truck.

Evaluation of a Design Support Tool Incorporating Sensory Performance Model of Ride Comfort for Conceptual Design of Controlled Suspensions

The objective of this study is to introduce and assess a computational tool designed to facilitate product development via sensory scores, which serve as a quantifiable representation of human sensory experiences. In the context of designing ride comfort performance, the specialized terminology—either technical or sensory—often served as a barrier to comprehension among the diverse set of specialists constituting the multidisciplinary team. In a previous study by the authors introduced a tool that incorporated a model of sensory performance, utilizing sensory scores as universally comprehensible metrics. However, the tool had yet to be appraised by a genuine cross-functional team. In this study, the tool underwent evaluation through a user-testing process involving twenty-five cross-functional team members engaged in the conceptual design phase at an automotive manufacturing company.

A Novel Torque Distribution Approach of Four-Wheel Independent-Drive Electric Vehicles for Improving Handling and Energy Efficiency

This paper presents a torque distribution strategy for four-wheel independent drive electric vehicles (4WIDEVs) to achieve both handling stability and energy efficiency. The strategy is based on the dynamic adjustment of two optimization objectives. Firstly, a 2DOF vehicle model is employed to define the stability control objective for Direct Yaw moment Control (DYC). The upper-layer controller, designed using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), is responsible for tracking the target yaw rate and target sideslip angle. Secondly, the lower-layer torque distribution strategy is established by optimizing the tire load rate and motor energy consumption for dynamic adjustment. To regulate the weights of the optimization targets, stability and energy efficiency allocation coefficient is introduced. Simulation results of double lane change and split μ road conditions are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DYC controller.

Computational Modeling and Optimization of a Flapping Mechanism Based on the Scotch Yoke Principle

The flight mechanisms of birds have long inspired efforts to develop bioinspired aerial vehicles. This study presents a computational framework to analyze a flapping mechanism's structural behavior and performance based on the Scotch yoke principle. A three-dimensional CAD model is developed and meshed for finite element analysis in ANSYS. Structural steel is chosen as the material. Static analysis is performed under simulated flapping loads to predict deformation, stresses, fatigue life, and failure points. Preliminary results identify regions of high-stress concentration requiring optimization. Topology optimization is conducted to determine an optimal material layout within defined constraints. Additional shape and compliance optimizations are employed. Comparison of initial and optimized designs significantly reduces maximum deformation and stresses throughout the structure. Fatigue life and safety factors are markedly improved.

A Method for Predicting Fatigue Life of Rubber Isolators at Power Spectral Density Load

Rubber isolators are widely used under random vibrations. In order to predict their fatigue life, a study on the fatigue analysis methodology for rubber isolators is carried out in this paper. Firstly, taking a mount used for isolating air conditioning compressor vibrations as studying example, accelerations versus time of rubber isolator at both sides are acquired for a car under different running conditions. The acceleration in time domain is transformed to frequency domain using the Fourier transform, and the acceleration power spectral density (PSD) is the obtained. Using the PSD as input, fatigue test is carried for the rubber isolator in different temperature and constant humidity conditions. A finite element model of the rubber isolator using ABAQUS is established for estimating fatigue life, and model validity is verified through static characteristic testing. Dynamic responses of the rubber isolator at frequency domain are calculated if a unit load is applied.

Spectrum-Based Method for Fatigue Damage under Excitation of Sinusoidal Sweeps for Automotive Systems

Vibration from a mechanical system not only produces unwanted noises annoying to people around, but also runs a risk of fatigue failure that would actually hinder its functionality. There are several forms of vibration depending on the sources of excitation forms. Mechanical systems with rotating components can be subjected to sinusoidal excitation due to the fact the center of mass is not perfectly aligned with the rotating axis. If the rotating speed is strictly ramping up or ramping down, this can create an excitation whose frequency is changing with time in a frequency range corresponding to the speeds swept. Compared with a single sinusoidal excitation, the issue with fatigue at swept sinusoidal excitation, is that as it sweeps through a wide frequency range, some swept frequencies will definitely coincide with the natural frequencies of the system. Certainly, the stress response exactly at the resonant frequency becomes the highest and could account for a lot of fatigue damage.

Multi-Material and Multi-Objective Topology Optimization Considering Crashworthiness

Recently, topology optimization (TO) has seen increased usage in the automotive industry as a numerical tool, greatly enhancing the accessibility and production-readiness of optimal, lightweight solutions. By natural extension of classic single material TO (SMTO), a wealth of research has been completed in multi-material TO (MMTO), enabling simultaneous determination of material selection and existence. MMTO is effective for linear static analyses, making use of structural responses that are continuously differentiable, giving itself to efficient gradient-based optimization engines. A structural response that is inherently nonlinear and transient, thus providing difficulty to the mainstay MMTO process, is that of crashworthiness. This paper presents a multi-objective MMTO framework considering crashworthiness using the equivalent static load (ESL) method. The ESL method uses a series of linear static sub-models to approximate the transient crashworthiness model.

Fatigue Life Analysis Methods for Rolling Lobe Air Spring

The fatigue prediction model of an air spring based on the crack initiation method is established in this study. Taking a rolling lobe air spring with an aluminum casing as the studying example, a finite element model for analyzing force versus displacement is developed. The static stiffness and dimensional parameters of limit positions are calculated and analyzed. The influence of different modeling methods of air springs bellow are compared and analyzed. Static stiffness measurement of an air spring is conducted, and the calculation results and the measured results of the static stiffness are compared. It is shown that the relative error of the measured stiffness and calculated stiffness is within 1%. The Abaqus post-processing stage is redeveloped in Python language.
