Analysis of Low-Frequency Brake Noise for Drum Brakes on Semi-Trailers

A road test on semi-trailers is carried out, and accelerations of some characteristic points on the braking system,axles,and truck body is measured,also brake pressure and noise around the support frame is acquired.The measured data was analyzed to determine the causes of the brake noise, and the mechanism of the noise of the drum brake of semi-trailers during low-speed braking was investigated. The following conclusions are obtained: (1) Brake noise of the drum brake of the semi-trailer at low-frequency is generated from vibrations of the brake shoes, axle, and body, and the vibration frequency is close to 2nd natural frequency of the axle. (2) Brake noise is generated from stick-slip motion between the brake shoes and the brake drum, where the relative motion between the brake drum and the brake shoes is changed alternately with sliding and sticking, resulting in sudden changes in acceleration and shock vibration.

This paper details the advancements and outcomes of the NEXTCAR (Next-Generation Energy Technologies for Connected and Automated on-Road Vehicles) program, an initiative led by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The program focusses on harnessing the full potential of Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technologies to develop advanced vehicle dynamic and powertrain control technologies (VD&PT). These technologies have shown the capability to reduce energy consumption by 20% in conventional and hybrid electric cars and trucks at automation levels L1-L3 and by 30% L4 fully autonomous vehicles. Such reductions could lead to significant energy savings across the entire U.S. vehicle fleet.

Virtual Methodology for Active Force Cancellation in Automotive Application Using Mass Imbalance & Centrifugal Force Generation (CFG) Principle

A variety of structures resonate when they are excited by external forces at, or near, their natural frequencies. This can lead to high deformation which may cause damage to the integrity of the structure. There have been many applications of external devices to dampen the effects of this excitation, such as tuned mass dampers or both semi-active and active dampers, which have been implemented in buildings, bridges, and other large structures. One of the active cancellation methods uses centrifugal forces generated by the rotation of an unbalanced mass. These forces help to counter the external excitation force coming into the structure. This research focuses on active force cancellation using centrifugal forces (CFG) due to mass imbalance and provides a virtual solution to simulate and predict the forces required to cancel external excitation to an automotive structure. This research tries to address the challenges to miniaturize the CFG model for a body-on-frame truck.

Research on Insulation Resistance Monitoring and Electrical Performance Evaluation into Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Considering Humidity and Heat Factors

Focused on the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) used in electric, this paper proposes an online insulation testing method based on voltage injection under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions. The effect of constant humidity and temperature on the insulation performance has been also studied. Firstly, the high-voltage insulation structure and principle of PMSM are analyzed, while an electrical insulation testing method considered constant humidity and temperature is proposed. Finally, a temperature and humidity experimental cycling test is carried out on a certain prototype PMSM, taking heat conduction and radiation models, water vapor, and partial discharge into account. The results show that the electrical insulation performance of the motor under constant humidity and temperature operation environment exhibits a decreasing trend. This study can provide theoretical and practical references for the reliable durability design of PMSM.

In radiography testing, the radioactive elements Iridium 192 (Ir192) and Cobalt 60 (Co60) are employed to detect subsurface and inner flaws. These radioactive components are kept secure within the radiation-protected source camera. Despite the fact that the camera is safe, there is a little quantity of radiation that may harm human body cells. In this present study, it restricts radiation emission by placing a lead sheet over the source camera, which absorbs the produced radiation. The innovative concept involves in this present work is to place a manually operated switch near the radiation source to emit radiation.

A Novel Approach to Make an Efficient Thermal Management of a Solar Electric Four-Wheeler through Model-Based System Simulation

The objective of this paper is to determine and design an optimized thermal management system for a solar electric four-wheeler while considering system influence. The major systems that will be analyzed and optimized include the HVAC, solar system, and battery. The HVAC system imposes a challenge to the designers to fulfill the passenger’s comfort and to operate it efficiently under a wide range of external loads from solar radiation, ambient temperature & and humidity, human metabolic activity, and other loads like the propulsion system temperature on the cabin. From the literature, it is found that the air conditioning system reduces on average 14% of the total battery capacity whereas the heating system reduces it by 18% [1], which makes the HVAC system design a crucial aspect to consider for the system influence.

Lane Change Conflict Analysis of Camera Based Side-View Systems

The recent progress in camera-based technologies has prompted the development of prototype camera-based video systems, intended to replace conventional passenger vehicle mirrors. Given that a significant number of collisions during lane changes stem from drivers being unaware of nearby vehicles, these camera-based systems offer the potential to enhance safety. By affording drivers a broader field of view, they facilitate the detection of potential conflicts. This project was focused on analyzing naturalistic driving data in support of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 regulatory endeavors. The goal was to assess the effectiveness and safety compatibility of prototype camera-based side-view systems as potential replacements for traditional side-view mirrors.

Harshness Improvement in Mid-Size Trucks

Ride comfort is a critical factor to customer perception of vehicle quality as it is related to vehicle experience when driving. It adds value to the product and, consequently, to vehicle brand. It has become a demand not only for passenger unibody vehicles but also to larger segments including mid-size trucks. Ride quality is usually quantified as harshness which is a measure of how the vehicle transmits the road irregularities to the customer at the tactile points such as the steering wheel and seats. Improving harshness requires tuning of different parts including tires, chassis frame/subframe and suspension mounts and bushings. This paper describes the methodology to enhance the harshness performance for a mid-size truck using a full vehicle CAE model. The influence of stiffnesses of body mounts and control arms bushings to harshness response is investigated through sensitivity analysis and the optimal configuration is found.

Corrosion affects all industrial sectors where metals or metal alloys are used in their structures. In the automotive industry, the continuous search for lightweight parts has increased the demand for effective corrosion protection, in order to improve vehicle performance without compromising durability and safety. In this scenario, coatings are essential elements to preserve and protect vehicle parts from various environmental aggressions. Automotive coatings can be classified into primers, topcoats, clearcoats, and specialty coatings. Primers provide corrosion resistance and promote adhesion between the substrate and topcoat. Topcoats provide color, gloss, and durability to the coating system, while clearcoats enhance the appearance and durability of the finish. Specialty coatings provide additional properties, such as scratch resistance, chemical resistance, and UV protection.

Performance Analysis of Cooperative Truck Platooning under Commercial Operation during Canadian Winter Season

Abstract The cooperative platoon of multiple trucks with definite proximity has the potential to enhance traffic safety, improve roadway capacity, and reduce fuel consumption of the platoon. To investigate the truck platooning performance in a real-world environment, two Peterbilt class-8 trucks equipped with cooperative truck platooning systems (CTPS) were deployed to conduct the first-of-its-kind on-road commercial trial in Canada. A total of 41 CTPS trips were carried out on Alberta Highway 2 between Calgary and Edmonton during the winter season in 2022, 25 of which were platooning trips with 3 to 5 sec time gaps. The platooning trips were performed at ambient temperatures from −24 to 8°C, and the total truck weights ranged from 16 to 39 tons. The experimental results show that the average time gap error was 0.8 sec for all the platooning trips, and the trips with the commanded time gap of 5 sec generally had the highest variations.

In the coming years, moving towards a hundred percent electric vehicles will be one of the key areas in the automotive industry. The main advantages of using e-mobility are operational flexibility, lower carbon emission and regenerative energy. Thermal management in an e-vehicle plays a vital role for the reliability of the system and any thermal failure can cost a significant amount of money to a company per vehicle. Inverter assembly is widely used to convert Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC) in the e-mobility platform to operate the motor for vehicle propulsion. It consists of various electronic transmitters, controllers, capacitors, and semi-conductors which will emit an enormous amount of heat during their operation. Since inverters are highly temperature sensitive in nature, it is necessary to improve the temperature distribution in the device. For this reason, adequate cooling system and ventilation is inevitable to keep the components operational.

Development of Asbestos Free Aramid Fibre based Friction lining Material for Automotive Application

The usage of asbestos-free material has grown in the automotive, aviation, and marine sectors due to its carcinogenic nature. The present investigation is to evaluate the non-asbestos organic friction material for automotive applications using aramid fibers. The aramid fibers or pulp is one of the essential ingredients of friction material as it possesses good qualities of friction material like high wear resistance and reliability. The present work is to optimize the pulp required for the best performance of friction lining material for brake pads in the automotive industry. The pulp percentage is varied by 0, 5, 7.5, and 10 weight percentages in hybrid composite friction materials. The various mechanical, wear and microstructural analysis are studied. The experimental result revealed that friction material having 10 wt% of aramid fiber (AF) proved the best performance with superior mechanical and wear characteristics.

Potential for Particulate Reduction by Use of eFuels in MPFI Engines

Currently, emission regulations for the LVs using standard spark ignited ICEs considering only gaseous pollutants, just as CO, HC and NOx. Following the upcoming legislation for personal vehicles sector, the LVs might also include limits of PN and PM. Regarding fuel injection strategies, the MPFI which was previously excluded from particulate control will be incorporated into the new regulation [1]. In terms of social harm, there will be a necessity to reduce engine particulate emissions, as they are known for being carcinogenic substances [2, 3, 4]. Generally, the smaller the particulate diameter, the more critical are the damages for human health therefore, the correct determination of PN and particulate diameter is essential. Beside future challenges for reducing and controlling particulates, the reduction of fossil fuel usage is also an imminent target, being the replacement by eFuels one of the most promising alternatives.

Infrared High-Speed Thermography of Combustion Chamber Wall Impinged by Diesel Spray Flame

As a new method to examine the extremely unsteady and spatially varying wall heat transfer phenomena on diesel engine combustion chamber wall, high-speed imaging of infrared thermal radiation from the chromium coated window surface impinged by a diesel spray flame has been conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber. The infrared radiation from a back surface of the chromium layer was successfully visualized at 10kHz frame rate and 128 × 128 pixel resolution through the window. The distributions of infrared radiation, temperature and heat flux exhibited coherent and streaky structure with radial stripes extending and waving from a stagnation point likely reflecting the near-wall turbulent structure in a wall impinging diesel flame. The experiments were conducted with various parameters such as fuel injection pressure, ambient gas oxygen concentration, wall impinging distance, wall surface roughness and wall materials.

Battery Surface Temperature Measurement Correction for an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter with Sapphire Optical Access

Upcoming legislation towards zero carbon emission is pushing the electric vehicle as the main solution to achieve this goal. However, electric vehicles still require further battery development to meet customer’s requirements as fast charge and high energy density. Both demands come with the cost of higher heat dissipation as lithium transport and chemical reaction inside the battery need to be performed faster, increasing the joule effect inside the battery. Due to its working principle, which guarantees an adiabatic environment, an accelerating rate calorimeter is used to study thermal phenomena in batteries like a thermal runaway. However, this equipment is not prepared to work with optical access, which helps to study and to comprehend battery surface distribution and other thermal aspects. This paper aims to show a methodology to correct temperature measurement when using a thermographic camera and optical access of sapphire in an accelerating rate calorimeter.

Crashworthiness Performance of Rear Underrun Protection Device under Simulated Car Collision

Abstract A rear underrun protection device (RUPD) plays a fundamental role in reducing the risk of running a small car beneath the rear or the side of a heavy truck because of the difference in structure heights in the event of a vehicle collision. Even in cars with five-star safety ratings, crashing into a truck with poorly designed RUPD results in a passenger compartment intrusion (PCI) more than the maximum allowable limit as per the United States (US) American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS). In this article, mild steel was used to fabricate the new designs of RUPD. The design was analyzed using finite element (FE) analysis LS-DYNA software. Simulations of a Toyota Yaris 2010 and Ford Taurus 2001 were performed at a constant speed of 63 km/h at the time of impact. The ability to prevent severe injuries in a collision with the rear side of the truck was estimated to optimize the underrun design.
