Predictive Maintenance of a Ground Vehicle Using Digital Twin Technology

The safety and reliability of ground vehicles is a motivating factor for periodic maintenance which includes fluids, lubrication, cleaning, repairs, and general observation of key subsystems. The scheduling of maintenance activities can occur at different rates such as daily, weekly, or perhaps operating time based on collected historical data and general guidelines. The availability of a digital twin (DT), which offers a virtual representation of the vehicle behavior, enables virtual system simulations for different operating cycles to explore the dynamic behavior. When field operating fleet data can be integrated with the digital twin estimates, then this supplemental information can be combined with the existing maintenance plan to provide a more comprehensive approach. In this paper, a digital twin with a statistical based predictive maintenance strategy is investigated for a wheeled military ground vehicle.

Design of a Double Wishbone Baja SAE Suspension System

The Baja SAE Completion is an extreme off roading event that requires an effective suspension design to survive the many obstacles that make up the racecourses. Without an effective suspension the many participating teams will experience poor performance or even failure within their suspension. This research focuses on the development and optimization of a double wishbone suspension in both the front and rear. Additionally, the design and optimization of a sway bar attached to the rear suspension will be gone through. Both the front and rear suspension will be optimized through three simulations heave, roll, and steering through the use of Optimum Kinematics. The process for placing the coilovers to ensure they will move perpendicular to control arms throughout their travel and ensuring the coilovers length in fully compression and extension are not exceeded will be developed through the use of SolidWorks and Optimum Kinematics.

Terrain Streaming for Real-Time Vehicle Dynamics

This paper describes an approach to integrating high-fidelity vehicle dynamics with a high-fidelity gaming engine, specifically with respect to terrain. The work is motivated by the experimental need to have both high-fidelity visual content with high-fidelity vehicle dynamics to drive a motion base simulator. To utilize a single source of terrain information, the problem requires the just-in-time sharing of terrain content between the gaming engine and the dynamics model. The solution is implemented as a client-server with the gaming engine acting as a stateless server and the dynamics acting as the client. The client is designed to actively maintain a locally cashed terrain grid around the vehicle and actively refresh it by polling the server in an on-demand mode of operation. The paper discusses the overall architecture, the protocol, the server, and the client designs. A practical implementation is described and shown to effectively function in real-time.

Fourth Axle Steering Control of an 8x8 Scaled Electric Combat Vehicle

With the rise in demand, advanced steering control and electric vehicle technology are rapidly developing in modern times. Due to a controller's role as a backbone for the modern vehicle, its study has become increasingly crucial. This research proposes a novel 4th axle steering (4AS) feedforward controller that utilizes the first, second and fourth axle steering control for an 8x8 scaled electric combat vehicle. The vehicle is tested using the predefined path following. The novel 4AS controller is then compared to the Ackermann steering condition at different speeds. In the scaled vehicle used for this research, each wheel is independently driven by an in-wheel motor, while the steering is carried out by linear actuators. Individual eight-wheel steering control systems are designed and installed on the scaled vehicle to evaluate the driving performance from low speed to high speed. The 4AS steering method is implemented to improve the stability of the scaled vehicle at high speeds.

Impact simulation of passenger electric vehicle’s battery pack protective structure for speed bump crossing event

In the automotive industry, the electric vehicle is the new era, and companies are committed to reducing carbon emissions by electrification of their vehicles. In the development of electric vehicles, the battery is the central power source for all the parts of the vehicle. Usually, it is placed under the body because of its size and mass. So, it is important to protect battery cells from leakage and damage from obstacles. For on-road electric vehicles, speed bumps are one of the crucial obstacles. This paper investigates and analyses the protection of battery pack systems in electric vehicles while encountering speed bump profiles at different speeds. During the physical test on a speed bump, there is a possibility of bump hit on the battery pack system and it is necessary to ensure the structural safety of the battery pack systems. In this study, CAE method has been developed to validate the battery pack system in the event of a speed bump crossing.

Analysis of Geo-Location Data to Understand Power and Energy Requirements for Main Battle Tanks

Tanks play a pivotal role in swiftly deploying firepower across dynamic battlefields. The core of tank mobility lies within their powertrains, driven by diesel engines or gas turbines. To better understand the benefits of each power system, this study uses geo-location data from the National Training Center to understand the power and energy requirements from a main battle tank over an 18-day rotation. This paper details the extraction, cleaning, and analysis of the geo-location data to produce a series of representative drive cycles for an NTC rotation. These drive-cycles serve as a basis for evaluating powertrain demands, chiefly focusing on fuel efficiency. Notably, findings reveal that substantial idling periods in tank operations contribute to diesel engines exhibiting notably lower fuel consumption compared to gas turbines. Nonetheless, gas turbines present several merits over diesel engines, notably an enhanced power-to-weight ratio and superior power delivery.

Effects of Framing on Tradespace Exploration Decision-Making for Vehicle Design

Tradespace exploration (TSE) describes the activity occurring early in the design process through which stakeholders explore a broad solution space in search of more-optimal alternatives. In doing so, these stakeholders attempt to maximize the utility inherent in the chosen solution while understanding the tradeoffs and compromises that may be required to find an acceptable solution. In the field of vehicle design, tradespaces are often comprised of vast amounts of alternatives which increases the complexity of the decision-making process. Additionally, the number of stakeholders has grown, as decision-makers seek to include more variety in both perspectives and expertise. As such, decision-making stakeholders can often find themselves working at odds and attempting to maximize vastly different objectives in the process. One way to rectify these contrasting viewpoints can be to intentionally introduce a group framing prior to the start of decision making.

VISION: Vehicle Infrared Signature Aware Off-Road Navigation

Vehicle navigation in off-road environments is challenging due to terrain uncertainty. Various approaches that account for factors such as terrain trafficability, vehicle dynamics, and energy utilization have been investigated. However, these are not sufficient to ensure safe navigation of optionally manned ground vehicles that are prone to detection using thermal infrared (IR) seekers in combat missions. This work is directed towards the development of a vehicle IR signature aware navigation stack comprised of global and local planner modules to realize safe navigation for optionally manned ground vehicles. The global planner used A* search heuristics designed to find the optimal path that minimizes the vehicle thermal signature metric on the map of terrain’s apparent temperature. The local planner used a model-predictive control (MPC) algorithm to achieve integrated motion planning and control of the vehicle to follow the path waypoints provided by the global planner.

While a major goal of this effort is to mitigate the carbon footprint of the U.S. Army's vehicle operations, this transition also presents an opportunity to harness advancements in automotive electrification. Among the key vehicles in focus are tactical wheeled vehicles, which provide military forces with versatile and rugged transportation solutions for various combat scenarios, ensuring mobility, protection, and adaptability on the battlefield. This study investigates the potential of electrified tactical wheeled vehicles by conducting a survey involving a diverse group of vehicle operators across various ranks within the U.S. Army.

Rollover Protection Structure - Gouge and Scratch Analysis in Rollover Crashes

Gouges and scratches to rollover protection structures are informative to the reconstruction and analysis of real-world vehicle rollover crashes. Variations in ground surface composition can be correlated with accompanying witness marks on the vehicle rollover protection structure. This paper presents the results of rollover protection structure specimen tests using a variety of test speeds and surface compositions. The test results and analyses that follow are displayed for use in comparison to similar damage on subject crash vehicles. In addition, impact of steel rollover protection structures with various opposing ground surface materials can produce visible sparks in low light conditions. Tests were performed to show the ability of these structures to produce sparks from various surface impacts.

An Optimum Solution to Meet the Thermal Load Challenge in a High Mobility Military Vehicle

Military vehicles are intended to operate at rugged terrains in adverse environmental conditions. Unlike a regular truck, these vehicles are powered by a much bigger engine and transmission to meet the vehicle performance parameters. Thermal systems in these vehicles are challenging. With the adverse climatic condition and driving terrains, the criticality of Engine cooling system is intensified. In this paper, a Cooling system is finalized for a high mobility military vehicle with higher power engine, Automatic transmission and a hydraulic retarder. Thermal load cases are different for each. Modelling is done in thermal simulation software KULI. A steady state simulation is done for engine and automatic transmission where-as transient simulation is performed for retarder. The aim is to finalize a cooling system circuit consisting of radiator, oil to air cooler and oil to water cooler which are interconnected to meet the heat load demand of engine, transmission and retarder together.
