The Influences of Testing Conditions on DOC Light-Off Experiments

Diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is one of the critical catalyst components in modern diesel aftertreatment systems. It mainly converts unburned hydrocarbon (HC) and CO to CO2 and H2O before they are released to the environment. In addition, it also oxidizes a portion of NO to NO2, which improves the NOx conversion efficiency via fast SCR over the downstream selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst. HC light-off tests, with or without the presence of NOx, has been typically used for DOC evaluation in laboratory. In this work, we aim to understand the influences of DOC light-off experimental conditions, such as initial temperature, initial holding time, HC species, with or without the presence of NOx, on the DOC HC light-off behavior. The results indicate that light-off test with lower initial temperature and longer initial holding time (at its initial temperature) leads to higher DOC light-off temperature.

Optimization of Surfactant and Catalyst Modified Urea-Water Solution Formulation for Deposit Reduction in SCR Aftertreatment Systems

Selective Catalytic Reduction is the primary method of NOX emission abatement in lean-burn internal combustion. This process requires the decomposition of a 32.5 wt. % urea-water solution (UWS) to provide ammonia as a reducing agent for NOX, but at temperatures < 250 °C the injection of UWS is limited due to the formation of harmful deposits within an aftertreatment system and decreased ammonia production. Previous work has sufficiently demonstrated that the addition of surfactant and a urea/isocyanic acid (HNCO) decomposition catalyst to UWS can significantly decrease deposit formation within an aftertreatment system. The objective of this work was to further optimize the modified UWS formulation by investigating different types and concentrations of surfactants and titanium-based urea/HNCO catalyst. Because there is a correlation between surface tension and water evaporation, it was theorized that minimizing the surface tension of UWS would result in decreased deposit formation.

Combination of Mixed Metal Oxides with Cu-Zeolite for Enhanced Soot Oxidation on an SCRoF

A push for more stringent emissions regulations has resulted in larger, increasingly complex aftertreatment solutions. In particular, oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and particulate matter (PM) have been controlled using two separate systems, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and the catalyze diesel particulate filter (CDPF), or the functionality has been combined into a single device producing the SCR on filter (SCRoF). The SCRoF forgoes beneficial NO2 production present in the CDPF to avoid NH3 oxidation which occurs when using platinum group metals (PGM) for oxidation. In this study, mixed-metal oxides are shown to oxidize NO to NO2 without appreciable NH3 oxidation. This selectivity leads to enhanced performance when combined with a typical Cu-zeolite catalyst.

Oil Consumption Pathway Impact on SCR-on-Filter Functional Performance and Lubricant Derived Ash Characteristics

SCR-on-filter, or SCRoF, is an emerging technology for different market segments and vehicle applications. The technology enables simultaneous particulate matter trapping and NOX reduction, and provides thermal management and aftertreatment packaging benefits. However, there is little information detailing the lubricant derived exposure effects on functional SCR performance. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of various oil consumption pathways on a light duty DOC and SCRoF aftertreatment system. This aftertreatment system was aged utilizing an engine test bench modified to enable increased oil consumption rates via three unique oil consumption pathways. The components were characterized for functional SCR performance, ash morphology, and ash deposition characteristics. This included utilizing techniques, such as SEM / EDS, to evaluate the ash structures and quantify the ash elemental composition.

Sulfur Poisoning of a Cu-SSZ-13 SCR Catalyst under Simulated Diesel Engine Operating Conditions

Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts are widely used for diesel aftertreatment applications for NOx (NO and NO2) abatement via selective catalytic reaction (SCR) due to their high conversion efficiency and excellent hydrothermal stability. Diesel engine exhaust contains small amounts of SOx due to the combustion of sulfur compounds in diesel fuel. The engine out SOx level mainly depends on the sulfur content in the diesel fuel. The presence of SOx from engine exhaust can deteriorate the SCR performance of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts in real-world applications. This work is focused on the sulfur-induced deactivation process of a Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst under a range of simulated diesel engine operating conditions. Two catalyst deactivation modes, namely chemical poisoning and physical poisoning, are identified, primarily depending on the operating temperature. Chemical poisoning mainly results from the interaction between SOx and Cu species within the zeolite framework.

Impact of Water Vapor on the Performance of a Cu-SSZ-13 Catalyst under Simulated Diesel Exhaust Conditions

Cu-SSZ-13 selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts are broadly applied in diesel aftertreatment systems for the catalytic conversion of oxides of nitrogen (NO + NO2). Diesel exhaust contains a wide range of water vapor concentrations depending on the operating condition. In this study, we evaluate the impact of water vapor on the relevant SCR catalytic functions including NOx conversion, NO oxidation, NH3 oxidation, and N2O formation under both standard and fast SCR conditions. Reactor-based experiments are conducted in the presence and absence of water vapor. Results indicate that water vapor can have both a positive and negative impact on low temperature NOx conversion for standard SCR reaction. At low inlet NOx concentrations, the presence of water vapor has a negative effect on NOx conversion, whereas, at high inlet NO concentrations, water vapor improves NOx conversion.

A Case Study of a Cu-SSZ-13 SCR Catalyst Poisoned by Real-World High Sulfur Diesel Fuel

To meet increasingly stringent diesel engine emission regulations, diesel engines are required to use ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and are equipped with advanced aftertreatment systems. Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts are widely used as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts due to their high NOx reduction and excellent hydrothermal stability. However, active Cu sites of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts can be poisoned by exposure to engine exhaust sulfur species. This poison effect can be mitigated with the use of ULSD and high temperature exposure from engine operation. On the other hand, ULSD is still not universally available where regulations require it, and vehicles may inadvertently operate with high sulfur diesel fuel (HSD) in some locations. The high concentration of exhaust sulfur species resulting from HSD combustion may rapidly poison the Cu-SSZ-13 SCR catalyst. In this study, the catalytic performance of a sulfur poisoned Cu-SSZ-13 SCR catalyst is analyzed.

Investigation into Low-Temperature Urea-Water Solution Decomposition by Addition of Titanium-Based Isocyanic Acid Hydrolysis Catalyst and Surfactant

Mitigation of urea deposit formation and improved ammonia production at low exhaust temperatures continues to be one of the most significant challenges for current generation selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment systems. Various technologies have been devised to alleviate these issues including: use of alternative reductant sources, and thermal treatment of the urea-water solution (UWS) pre-injection. The objective of this work was to expand the knowledge base of a potential third option, which entails chemical modification of UWS by addition of a titanium-based urea/isocyanic acid (HNCO) decomposition catalysts and/or surfactant to the fluid. Physical solid mixtures of urea with varying concentrations of ammonium titanyl oxalate (ATO), oxalic acid, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) were generated, and the differences in NH3 and CO2 produced upon thermal decomposition were quantified.

Deposit Reduction in SCR Aftertreatment Systems by Addition of Ti-Based Coordination Complex to UWS

Formation of urea-derived deposits in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment systems continues to be problematic at temperatures at and below 215 °C. Several consequences of deposit formation include: NOx and NH3 slip, exhaust flow maldistribution, increased engine backpressure, and corrosion of aftertreatment components. Numerous methods have been developed to reduce deposit formation, but to date, there has been no solution for continuous low-temperature dosing of Urea-Water Solution (UWS). This manuscript presents a novel methodology for reducing low-temperature deposit formation in SCR aftertreatment systems. The methodology described herein involves incorporation and dissolution of an HNCO hydrolysis catalyst directly into the UWS. HNCO is a transient species formed by the thermolysis of urea upon injection of UWS into the aftertreatment system.

Low-Temperature NH3 Storage, Isothermal Desorption, Reactive Consumption, and Thermal Release from Cu-SSZ-13 and V2O5-WO3/TiO2 Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalysts

Worldwide, regulations continue to drive reductions in brake-specific emissions of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from on-highway and nonroad diesel engines. NOx, formed as a byproduct of the combustion of fossil fuels (e.g., natural gas, gasoline, diesel, etc.), can be converted to dinitrogen (N2) through ammonia (NH3) selective catalytic reduction (SCR). In this study, we closely examine the low-temperature storage, isothermal desorption, reactive consumption, and thermal release of NH3 on commercial Cu-SSZ-13 and V2O5-WO3/TiO2 SCR catalysts. Catalyst core-reactor, N2 adsorption (BET) surface area, and in-situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments are utilized to investigate the fundamental chemical processes relevant to low-temperature (T < 250°C) NH3 SCR.

Comparison of Accelerated Ash Loading Methods for Gasoline Particulate Filters

Recent legislation enacted for the European Union (EU) and the United States calls for a substantial reduction in particulate mass (and number in the EU) emissions from gasoline spark-ignited vehicles. The most prominent technology being evaluated to reduce particulate emissions from a gasoline vehicle is a wall flow filter known as a gasoline particulate filter (GPF). Similar in nature to a diesel particulate filter (DPF), the GPF will trap and store particulate emissions from the engine, and oxidize said particulate with frequent regeneration events. The GPF will also collect ash particles in the wall flow substrate, which are metallic components that cannot be oxidized into gaseous components. Due to high temperature operation and frequent regeneration of the GPF, the impact of ash on the GPF has the potential to be substantially different from the impact of ash on the DPF.

NO2 Formation and Mitigation in an Advanced Diesel Aftertreatment System

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is known to pose a risk to human health and contributes to the formation of ground level ozone. In recognition of its human health implications, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) set a Threshold Limit Value (TLV) of 0.2 ppmv NO2 in 2012. For mobile sources, NO2 is regulated as a component of NOx (NO + NO2). In addition, the European Commission has indicated it is considering separate Euro 6 light-duty diesel and Euro VI heavy-duty diesel NO2 emissions limits likely to mitigate the formation of ground level ozone in urban areas. In this study, we conduct component-level reactor-based experiments to understand the effects that various aftertreatment catalyst technologies including diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst and ammonia oxidation (AMOX) catalyst have on the formation and mitigation of NO2 emissions.

Impact of Hydrothermal Aging on the Formation and Decomposition of Ammonium Nitrate on a Cu/zeolite SCR Catalyst

Low-temperature (T ≤ 200°C) NOx conversion is receiving increasing research attention due to continued potential reductions in regulated NOx emissions from diesel engines. At these temperatures, ammonium salts (e.g., ammonium nitrate, ammonium (bi)sulfate, etc.) can form as a result of interactions between NH3 and NOx or SOx, respectively. The formation of these salts can reduce the availability of NH3 for NOx conversion, block active catalyst sites, and result in the formation of N2O, a regulated Greenhouse Gas (GHG). In this study, we investigate the effect of hydrothermal aging on the formation and decomposition of ammonium nitrate on a state-of-the-art Cu/zeolite selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst. Reactor-based constant-temperature ammonium nitrate formation, temperature programmed oxidation (TPO), and NO titration experiments are used to characterize the effect of hydrothermal aging from 600 to 950°C.

Understanding System- and Component-Level N2O Emissions from a Vanadium-Based Nonroad Diesel Aftertreatment System

Nitrous oxide (N2O), with a global warming potential (GWP) of 297 and an average atmospheric residence time of over 100 years, is an important greenhouse gas (GHG). In recognition of this, N2O emissions from on-highway medium- and heavy-duty diesel engines were recently regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) GHG Emission Standards. Unlike NO and NO2, collectively referred to as NOx, N2O is not a major byproduct of diesel combustion. However, N2O can be formed as a result of unselective catalytic reactions in diesel aftertreatment systems, and the mitigation of this unintended N2O formation is a topic of active research. In this study, a nonroad Tier 4 Final/Stage IV engine was equipped with a vanadium-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system. Experiments were conducted over nonroad steady and both cold and hot transient cycles (NRSC and NRTC, respectively).

Achieving Ultra Low NOX Emissions Levels with a 2017 Heavy-Duty On-Highway TC Diesel Engine - Comparison of Advanced Technology Approaches

The 2010 emissions standards for heavy-duty engines have established a limit of oxides of nitrogen (NOX) emissions of 0.20 g/bhp-hr. However, the California Air Resource Board (ARB) projects that even when the entire on-road fleet of heavy-duty vehicles operating in California is compliant with 2010 emission standards, the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) requirement for ambient particulate matter (PM) and Ozone will not be achieved without further reduction in NOX emissions. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) funded a research program to explore the feasibility of achieving 0.02 g/bhp-hr NOX emissions.

Investigation of Urea Derived Deposits Composition in SCR Systems

Ideally, complete decomposition of urea should produce only two products in active Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems: ammonia and carbon dioxide. In reality, urea decomposition reaction is a two-step process that includes the formation of ammonia and isocyanic acid as intermediate products via thermolysis. Being highly reactive, isocyanic acid can initiate the formation of larger molecular weight compounds such as cyanuric acid (CYN), biuret (BIU), melamine (MEL), ammeline (AML), ammelide (AMD), and dicyandimide (DICY). These compounds can be responsible for the formation of deposits on the walls of the decomposition reactor in urea SCR systems. Composition of these deposits varies with temperature exposure, and under certain conditions can create oligomers that are difficult to remove from exhaust pipes. Deposits can affect efficiency of the urea decomposition, and if large enough, can inhibit the exhaust flow and negatively impact ammonia distribution on the SCR catalyst.

Conversion of Short-Chain Alkanes by Vanadium-Based and Cu/Zeolite SCR Catalysts

The oxidation of short-chain alkanes, such as methane, ethane, and propane, from the exhaust of lean-burn natural gas and lean-burn dual-fuel (natural gas and diesel) engines poses a unique challenge to the exhaust aftertreatment community. Emissions of these species are currently regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as either methane (Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards) or non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC). However, the complete catalytic oxidation of short-chain alkanes is challenging due to their thermodynamic stability. The present study focuses on the oxidation of short-chain alkanes by vanadium-based and Cu/zeolite selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts, generally utilized to control NOx emissions from lean-burn engines. Results reveal that these catalysts are active for short-chain alkane oxidation, albeit, at conversions lower than those generally reported in the literature for Pd-based catalysts, typically used for short-chain alkane conversion.

Emissions of Organic Species from a Nonroad Vanadium-Based SCR Aftertreatment System

U.S. and European nonroad diesel emissions regulations have led to the implementation of various exhaust aftertreatment solutions. One approved configuration, a vanadium-based selective catalytic reduction catalyst followed by an ammonia oxidation catalyst (V-SCR + AMOX), does not require the use of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) or diesel particulate filter (DPF). While certification testing has shown the V-SCR + AMOX system to be capable of meeting the nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter requirements, open questions remain regarding the efficacy of this aftertreatment for volatile and nonvolatile organic emissions removal, especially since the removal of this class of compounds is generally attributed to both the DOC and DPF.

Characterization of Criteria and Organic Matter Emissions from a Nonroad Diesel Engine Equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction System

More stringent emission requirements for nonroad diesel engines both in the U.S. and Europe have spurred the development of engines and exhaust aftertreatment technologies. In this study, one such system consisting of a diesel oxidation catalyst, zeolite-based selective catalytic reduction catalyst, and an ammonia oxidation catalyst was evaluated using both nonroad transient and steady-state cycles in order to understand the emission characteristics of this configuration. Criteria pollutants were analyzed and particular attention was given to organic compound and NO2 emissions since both of these could be significantly affected by the absence of a diesel particulate filter that typically helps reduce semi-volatile and particle-phase organics and consumes NO2 via passive soot oxidation. Results are then presented on a detailed speciation of organic emissions including alkanes, cycloalkanes, aromatics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and hopanes and steranes.
