Modeling and Time Discrete Characteristics Analysis of the Oil Filling Process of Wet Clutch for a Specialized Vehicle’s Automatic Transmission

The automatic transmission of a specialized vehicle encountered challenges in achieving stable oil filling time due to the considerable variability of related parameters and the non-linear trends in the variation of individual product parameters over time. To investigate the underlying causes of this phenomenon and enhance the oil filling efficiency, a detailed model of the clutch oil filling process during gear shifting was established in this paper, which included dynamic models of the key components such as the hydraulic system, clutch, proportional valve, and oil passages. Physical experiments were performed on the test bench to compare with the simulation results. The results showed that the correlation between the simulation model and the test bench was well, which verified the effectiveness of the simulation model.

A Path Tracking Method for an Unmanned Bicycle Based on the Body-Fixed Coordinate Frame

The present study introduces a novel approach for achieving path tracking of an unmanned bicycle in its local body-fixed coordinate frame. A bicycle is generally recognized as a multibody system consisting of four distinct rigid bodies, namely the front wheel, the front fork, the body frame, and the rear wheel. In contrast to most previous studies, the relationship between a tire and the road is now considered in terms of tire forces rather than nonholonomic constraints. The body frame has six degrees of freedom, while the rear wheel and front fork each have one degree of freedom relative to the body frame. The front wheel exhibits a single degree of freedom relative to the front fork. A bicycle has a total of nine degrees of freedom.

A Novel Torque Distribution Approach of Four-Wheel Independent-Drive Electric Vehicles for Improving Handling and Energy Efficiency

This paper presents a torque distribution strategy for four-wheel independent drive electric vehicles (4WIDEVs) to achieve both handling stability and energy efficiency. The strategy is based on the dynamic adjustment of two optimization objectives. Firstly, a 2DOF vehicle model is employed to define the stability control objective for Direct Yaw moment Control (DYC). The upper-layer controller, designed using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), is responsible for tracking the target yaw rate and target sideslip angle. Secondly, the lower-layer torque distribution strategy is established by optimizing the tire load rate and motor energy consumption for dynamic adjustment. To regulate the weights of the optimization targets, stability and energy efficiency allocation coefficient is introduced. Simulation results of double lane change and split μ road conditions are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DYC controller.

A Multibody Model for Riderless Bicycle Dynamics Considering Tire Characteristics

A multibody model for riderless bicycle dynamics considering tire characteristics is presented. A riderless bicycle is regarded as a multibody system consisting of four rigid bodies: rear wheel, frame, front fork, and front wheel. Every two bodies are connected with a revolute joint. The mass center coordinates and Euler angles of the rigid bodies are used as the generalized coordinates to describe their positions and orientations. The system equations of motion are obtained using Lagrange equations of the first kind. Due to the existence of the three revolute constraints and the use of dependent generalized coordinates, the Lagrange multipliers are employed to account for revolute reaction forces. As for the contact between the wheel and the ground, many studies regarded the wheel as a rigid body with a knife edge, which lead to the nonholonomic constraints between the wheel and the ground.

Study on the Torque Distribution of Wheel-Track Hybrid Drive Vehicles during Pass Shoreline

To study the torque distribution of track and tire in the wheel-track hybrid drive vehicle driving along the shoreline, an analysis model of wheel-track hybrid drive vehicle was established by using multi-body dynamics (MBD), discrete element (DEM), and shoreline pavement construction methods. The vehicle speed, acceleration, torque, vertical load, sinkage, slip, and other indicators when the vehicle passes the shoal at different wheel speed of rotation are analyzed. The relationships between wheel speed of rotation and slip, sinkage and slip, and vertical load and driving moment were studied, and the laws that the sinkage of tires and tracks is positively related to their slippage and the driving moment of wheels and tracks is positively related to their vertical load were obtained.

Optimal Shift Control of Dual Clutch Transmission in Electric Vehicles Based on Linear Quadratic Regulator

Unsuitable shift control strategies may increase the vehicle jerk and clutch wear. In order to improve the shift quality of electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with dual clutch transmission, this paper proposes an optimal shift control strategy based on linear quadratic regulator, in which weighting matrices are selected by using genetic algorithm (GA). The dynamics of the shift process of the dual clutch transmission is analyzed to establish the dynamic model of the driving system. In addition to the vehicle jerk, the friction work of clutch is also considered as one of the performance criteria and a new linear quadratic objective function is formulated. The optimal weighting matrices for obtaining a globally optimal solution are selected benefit from the global search capacity of genetic algorithm. The optimal target trajectories of the torque of the two clutches and motor are obtained by simulating the linear quadratic regulator (LQR).

Road-Feeling Simulation of SBW System Based on Kalman Filter Fusion Estimation

Due to the elimination of the mechanical connection between the steering column and steering gear in the Steer-by-Wire (SBW) system, the road-feeling simulation is mainly supplied by the road-feeling motor which loads a drag torque on the steering wheel rather than the actual torque transmitted from the road. To obtain more realistic steering wheel torque, a novel feedback torque of the road-feeling motor fusion estimation method based on the Kalman filter is presented in this paper. Firstly, the model-based estimation method is utilized to estimate the aligning torque between tires and ground which is converted into the rack force through the steering system. Then the estimated rack force is used as the observed data for the Kalman Filter of the sensor-based method and the Kalman Filter-based fusion estimation method is resulted, through which the more realistic feedback torque of the road-feeling motor can be obtained.

Semi-Active Control of ISD In-Wheel Motors Suspension with Dynamic Vibration Absorber

Electric vehicles driven by in-wheel-motor have the advantages of compact structure and high transmission efficiency, which is one of the most ideal energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and safe driving forms in the future. However, the addition of the in-wheel-motor significantly increases the unsprung mass of the vehicle, resulting in a decrease in the mass ratio of the vehicle body to the wheel, which will deteriorate the ride comfort and safety of the vehicle. To improve the vibration performance of in-wheel-motor driven vehicles, a semi-active inerter-spring-damper (ISD) suspension with in-wheel-motor (IWM) dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) of the electric wheel is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a structure of in-wheel-motor DVA is proposed, which converts the motor into a dynamic vibration absorber of the wheel to suppress the vibration of the unsprung mass.

Adaptive Control Strategy for Complex Starting Conditions of Vehicles with Dry Dual Clutch Transmission

For vehicles equipped with dry dual clutch transmission, due to the diversity of starting conditions, it is a nontrivial task for control strategy to meet the requirements of all kinds of complex starting conditions, which is easy to cause large starting shock and serious clutch wear. Therefore, it is proposed in this paper an adaptive control strategy for complex starting conditions by adjusting two clutches to participate in the starting process at the same time. On the basis of establishing the transmission system model and clutch model, the starting conditions are identified in terms of starting speed, road adhesion and driver's intention, in which the driver's intention is identified by fuzzy reasoning model. Based on the identification of starting conditions and considering the safety principle, it is selected the appropriate starting gear and clutch combination mode, and adjusted the combination speed of the two clutches to carry out an adaptive control strategy.

Dynamics and Control of Gearshifts in Wet-Type Dual Clutch Transmission for BEVs

The dual clutch transmission is one of the possible choices for electric vehicle drivelines. The basic principle and control mode of shifting of wet dual clutch transmission are introduced, and the dynamic process of shifting of wet double clutch transmission is studied. Combined with the dynamic model of the wet clutch engagement process, the difference between the dynamic characteristics of the dual clutch transmission modeling using the Coulomb friction model and the dual-clutch transmission model using the average flow model and the micro-convex contact theory is analyzed. The shift control strategy of the dual clutch transmission proposes a correction method to improve the shifting smoothness. Studies have shown that the torque response of the wet clutch has significant hysteresis, and the improved control algorithm can significantly improve the shifting smoothness of the wet dual clutch transmission.

Multi-Mode Controller Design for Active Seat Suspension with Energy-Harvesting

In this paper, a multi-mode active seat suspension with a single actuator is proposed and built. A one-DOF seat suspension system is modelled based on a quarter car model of commercial vehicle with an actuator which is comprised of a DC motor and a gear reducer. Aiming at improving ride comfort and reducing energy consumption, a multi-mode controller is established. According to the seat vertical acceleration and suspension dynamic travel signals, control strategies switch between three modes: active drive mode, energy harvesting mode and plug breaking mode.

An Improved Human Biodynamic Model Considering the Interaction between Feet and Ground

Nowadays, studying the human body response in a seated position has attracted a lot of attention as environmental vibrations are transferred to the human body through floor and seat. This research has constructed a multi-body biodynamic human model with 17 degrees of freedom (DOF), including the backrest support and the interaction between feet and ground. Three types of human biodynamic models are taken into consideration: the first model doesn't include the interaction between the feet and floor, the second considers the feet and floor interaction by using a high stiffness spring, the third one includes the interaction by using a soft spring. Based on the whole vehicle model, the excitation to human body through feet and back can be obtained by ride simulation. The simulation results indicate that the interaction between feet and ground exerts non-negligible effect upon the performance of the whole body vibration by comparing the three cases.

Analysis on Synchronizer of Manual Transmission using Finite Element Analysis

A simulation model of the single cone synchronizer is presented using the dynamic implicit algorithm with commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software Abaqus. The meshing components include sleeve gear, blocking ring and clutch gear, which are all considered as deformation body. The processes mainly contain the contact between sleeve teeth and blocking teeth, meshing period and the impact of sleeve teeth and clutch gear teeth, and these nonlinear contact steps are realized with Abaqus. In addition, a shift force derives from experiment is applied to the sleeve ring, and a moment is added to the clutch gear to realize the relative rotational speed. Based on the FEA model, the effect of the varied frictional coefficients between the cone surfaces of blocking ring and clutch gear on the synchronizer time and contact stress is discussed. Variation of stresses and contact force with respect to time are evaluated from this analysis.

Multi-objective Optimization of the PMS Based on Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II

In order to reasonably match the variable stiffness and location of the Powertrain Mounting System (PMS) and optimize the ride comfort of commercial vehicle, a thirteen degrees of freedom (DOF) model of a commercial vehicle was established in Adams/view. Specially, the support rod installed on the upside of the transmission case was modeled as a flexible body. The vibration isolation provided by the PMS was evaluated in three aspects: the energy decoupling of the powertrain, the response force of the mount and the displacement of the powertrain. The energy decoupling ratio, the force RMS of the mount when force excitation was applied on the powertrain and the displacement of the powertrain Center of Gravity (C.G) when displacement excitation was applied on the vehicle chassis were selected as the optimal target. Adams and MATLAB were integrated into the optimization software iSIGHT to optimize the PMS. NSGA-II is used to obtain some Pareto-optimal solutions of PMS.

Optimization Design of a Six-Point Powetrain Mounting System with Flexible Support Rod

NVH quality is one of the most important criteria by which people judge the design of a vehicle. The Powertrain Mounting System (PMS), which can reduce the vibration from engine to vehicle cab as well as the inside noise, has attained significant attention. Much research has been done on the isolation method for three- and four-point mounting. But the six-point mounting system, which is usually equipped in commercial vehicle, is seldom studied and should be paid more attention. In this paper, the support rod installed on the upside of the transmission case is considered as a flexible body. Thus a rigid-flexible coupling model of PMS is established and the necessity of the established model is analyzed by comparing the simulation results of the new model and those of the conventional model.

Sensitivity Analysis on a Synchronization Mechanism for Manual Transmission Gearbox

This paper presents the dynamic and analysis models of a typical synchronizer, which are mainly used to analyze the sensitivity of parameters of synchronizer on the gear shift performance. Because there are so many parameters namely coefficient of friction, cone angle, mean radius, blocker angle, etc, affected the synchronizer performance, which the times of experience will increase in a geometrical ratio if tested them one by one, it is almost impossible to evaluate all parameters by experience alone. Due to virtual prototype technology, the synchronizer parameterized virtual models can be built for the synchronizer studies. The parameterized virtual models of the typical synchronizers are developed with ADAMS. Then the gear shift process is simulated and analyzed for the given input parameters respectively. The models also predict the shift time and the peak of the shift force, and the model is validated by the good correlation between simulation results and test data.

Hanger Location Design and Vibration Isolation of an Exhaust System

In the present study, the research of the exhaust system is performed in three steps. In the first step, the average driving degree of freedom displacement (ADDOFD) is calculated by the free modal analysis of the exhaust system. It is easy to find the reasonable location of the hanger according to the value of the ADDOFD, since it represents the relative size of some DOF's response displacement at excitation state. The second of which is to analyse the vibration isolation performance of the exhaust system based on the first step. The dynamic analysis of the exhaust system together with the powertrain is studied, by which way the unit sinusoidal excitation is applied at the powertrain's mass centre, so that the response force at the hanger can be obtained. Finally, the relationship between the constrained model of the exhaust system and the stiffness of the hanger is investigated, which is significant in engineering.

Multi-domain Modeling and Simulation of AMT Based on Modelica

The automatic mechanical transmission (AMT) was designed by automobile manufacturers to provide a better driving experience, especially in cities where congestion frequently causes stop-and-go traffic patterns. It uses electronic sensors, processors, hydraulic or pneumatic actuators execute clutch actuation and gear shifts on the command of the driver. Such systems coupled with various physical domains have great influence on the dynamic behavior of the vehicle, such as shift quality, driveability, acceleration, etc. This paper presents a detailed AMT model composed of various components from multi-domains like mechanical systems (clutch, gear pair, synchronizer, etc.), pneumatic actuator systems (clutch actuation system, gear select actuation system, gear shift actuation system, etc.). Various components and subsystem models, such as the vehicle, engine, AMT, wheels, etc., are integrated into an overall vehicle system model according to the transmission power flow and control logic.

Modeling and Optimization of Vehicle Acceleration and Fuel Economy Performance with Uncertainty Based on Modelica

To design and optimize the vehicle driveline is necessary to decrease the fuel consumption and improve dynamic performance. This paper describes a methodology to optimize the driveline design including the axle ratio, transmission shift points and transmission shift ratios considering uncertainty. A new and flexible tool for modeling multi-domain systems, Modelica, is used to carry out the modeling and analysis of a vehicle, and the multi-domain model is developed to determine the optimum design in terms of fuel economy, with determinability. Secondly, a robust optimization is carried out to find the optimum design considering uncertainty. The results indicate that the fuel economy and dynamic performance are improved greatly.

Multi-domain Modeling and Simulation of Clutch Actuation System Based on Modelica

Clutch actuation systems are complex systems where hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical components are coupled. This paper presents a detailed clutch actuation model composed of components from multi-domains like mechanical and pneumatic actuation system, hydraulic boosting system, etc. Various components and subsystem models, such as the driver, engine, gear pairs, clutches, etc., are integrated into an overall vehicle system model according to the transmission power flow and control logic. The model is implemented using the Modelica programming language. The simulation of the clutch actuation system was carried out for the analysis of drivability, shift quality and vehicle overall performance.
