IC Engine Internal Cooling System Modelling Using 1D-CFD Methodology

Internal combustion engine gets heated up due to continuous combustion of fuel. To keep engine working efficiently and prevent components damage due to very high temperature, the engine needs to be cooled down. Based on power output requirement and provision for cooling system, every engine has it’s unique cooling system. Liquid based cooling systems are majorly implemented in automobile. It’s important to keep in mind that during design phase that, cooling the engine will lower the power to fuel consumption ratio. Therefore, during lower ambient conditions, the cooling system should be able to uniformly increase the temperature of the engine components, engine oil and transmission oil. This is achieved by circulating the coolant through cooling jacket, engine oil heater and transmission oil heater, which will be heated by the combustion heat.

Influence of Automatic Engine Stop/Start Systems on Vehicle NVH and Launch Performance

Integration of automatic engine Stop/Start systems in “conventional” drivetrains with 12V starters is a relatively cost-effective measure to reduce fuel consumption. Therefore, automatic engine Stop/Start systems are becoming more prevalent and increasing market share of such systems is predicted. A quick, reliable and consistent engine start behavior is essential for customer acceptance of these systems. The launch of the vehicle should not be compromised by the Stop/Start system, which implies that the engine start time and transmission readiness for transmitting torque should occur within the time the driver releases the brake pedal and de-presses the accelerator pedal. Comfort and NVH aspects will continue to play an important role for customer acceptance of these systems. Hence, the engine stop and re-start behavior should be imperceptible to the driver from both a tactile and acoustic standpoint.

Impact of SCR Integration on N2O Emissions in Diesel Application

Significant reduction in Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions will be required to meet LEV III/Tier III Emissions Standards for Light Duty Diesel (LDD) passenger vehicles. As such, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are exploring all possible aftertreatment options to find the best balance between performance, durability and cost. The primary technology adopted by OEMs in North America to achieve low NOx levels is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). The critical parameters needed for SCR to work properly are: an appropriate reductant such as ammonia (NH3) provided as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), which is an aqueous urea solution 32.5% concentration in weight with water (CO(NH2)2 + H2O), optimum operating temperatures, and optimum nitrogen dioxide (NO2) to NOx ratios (NO2/NOx). The NO2/NOx ratio is most influenced by Precious Group Metals (PGM) containing catalysts upstream of the SCR catalyst.

A Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Strategy with a Disturbance Observer for Spark Ignition Engines with External EGR

This research proposes a control system for Spark Ignition (SI) engines with external Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) based on model predictive control and a disturbance observer. The proposed Economic Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (E-NMPC) tries to minimize fuel consumption for a number of engine cycles into the future given an Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP) tracking reference and abnormal combustion constraints like knock and combustion variability. A nonlinear optimization problem is formulated and solved in real time using Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) to obtain the desired control actuator set-points. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based observer is applied to estimate engine states, combining both air path and cylinder dynamics. The EKF engine state(s) observer is augmented with disturbance estimation to account for modeling errors and/or sensor/actuator offset.

An Intuitive Derivation of the Dual-Clutch Model for Clutch Shift Dynamics

There are several commercial off-the-shelf software available to study transmission and driveline dynamics. Many of these software require a faithful representation of the transmission topology in order to carry out the analyses. These modeling techniques utilize several redundant degrees of freedom which may not be necessary for studying low frequency (< ~30 Hz) dynamics and may be computationally inefficient. The dual-clutch model has been proposed as a generic 2-DOF model that overcomes some of these drawbacks. In this paper, the dual-clutch model is initially derived from first principles, starting with the equations of motion for a planetary automatic transmission. The model coefficients - the inertia matrix and the matrix of clutch coefficients - are then derived using a more intuitive approach based on energy considerations.

Adaptive Sampling in the Design Space Exploration of the Automotive Front End Cooling Flow

One of the key inputs 1-D transient simulation takes is a detailed front end cooling flow map. These maps that are generated using a full vehicle Three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (3D CFD) model require expensive computational resources and time. This paper describes how an adaptive sampling of the design space allowed the reduction of computational efforts while keeping desired accuracy of the analysis. The idea of the method was to find a pattern of Design of Experiments (DOE) sampling points for 3D CFD simulations that would allow a creation of an approximation model accurate enough to predict output parameter values in the entire design space of interest. Three procedures were implemented to get the optimal sampling pattern.

A Study on the Effect of Different Glasses and Its Properties on Vehicle Cabin during Soaking at Hot Ambient Conditions Using 1D Simulation

Increase in the atmospheric temperature across the globe during summer, increases the heat load in the vehicle cabin, creating a huge thermal discomfort for the passengers. There are two scenarios where these adverse conditions can be a problem during the summer. Firstly, while driving the vehicle in traffic conditions and secondly, when the vehicle is parked under the sun. When the vehicle is exposed to the radiation from the sun for a period, the cabin temperature can reach alarming levels, which may have serious discomfort and health effects on the people entering the vehicle. Although there are options of remote switching on of air conditioners, they are restricted to vehicles having an automatic transmission and availability of the mobile network. So, it is important to explore the possible options which can be used for restricting the external heat load to the cabin.

Design of Valve Body Integrated Direct Acting Controids

The latest trend in transmission hydraulic controls development ise body integrated direct acting control solenoid, ted by multiple automotive OEMs. The advantages of integrated direct acting control solenoids are key enablers for OEMs to meet more and more stringent fuel economy requirement and competitive environment. In the meantime, there are unique challenges in both designing and manufacturing of such solenoids, due to the fact the solenoid armature can only push the spool valve with limited force and limited stroke. Through analytical methods, this paper explains design guidelines to overcome the challenges and quantifies the impact of design decision to critical functional objectives. Multiple valve design configurations, including both normally low and normally high functionality, are covered in the analysis. Unique manufacturing process concerns are also addressed.

Performance, Efficiency and Emissions Assessment of Natural Gas Direct Injection compared to Gasoline and Natural Gas Port-Fuel Injection in an Automotive Engine

Interest in natural gas as a fuel for light-duty transportation has increased due to its domestic availability and lower cost relative to gasoline. Natural gas, comprised mainly of methane, has a higher knock resistance than gasoline making it advantageous for high load operation. However, the lower flame speeds of natural gas can cause ignitability issues at part-load operation leading to an increase in the initial flame development process. While port-fuel injection of natural gas can lead to a loss in power density due to the displacement of intake air, injecting natural gas directly into the cylinder can reduce such losses. A study was designed and performed to evaluate the potential of natural gas for use as a light-duty fuel. Steady-state baseline tests were performed on a single-cylinder research engine equipped for port-fuel injection of gasoline and natural gas, as well as centrally mounted direct injection of natural gas.

Utilizing Engine Dyno Data to Build NVH Simulation Models for Early Rapid Prototyping

As the move to decrease physical prototyping increases the need to virtually prototype vehicles become more critical. Assessing NVH vehicle targets and making critical component level decisions is becoming a larger part of the NVH engineer’s job. To make decisions earlier in the process when prototypes are not available companies need to leverage more both their historical and simulation results. Today this is possible by utilizing a hybrid modelling approach in an NVH Simulator using measured on road, CAE, and test bench data. By starting with measured on road data from a previous generation or comparable vehicle, engineers can build virtual prototypes by using a hybrid modeling approach incorporating CAE and/or test bench data to create the desired NVH characteristics. This enables the creation of a virtual drivable model to assess subjectively the vehicles acoustic targets virtually before a prototype vehicle is available.

Methodology to Determine the Effective Volume of Gasoline Particulate Filter Technology on Criteria Emissions

New Particulate Matter (PM) and Particulate Number (PN) regulations throughout the world have created a need for aftertreatment solutions that include particulate control as an option to comply with the legislation. However, limitations in other criteria emissions cannot be sacrificed to accomplish the reduction of PM/PN. For this work, three-way washcoat catalyzed wall-flow Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF) and similarly catalyzed flow-through catalysts of common defined volume were tested. Their catalytic performance was determined by measuring NOx, CO and HC conversion efficiencies and CO2 levels over the U.S. Federal Test Procedure 75 (FTP-75) and US06 Supplemental Federal Test Procedure (US06) cycles. Analysis of the impact on CO2 emissions was also evaluated in relation to backpressure from 1-D modeling analysis. All exhaust systems used the same loading and ratio of Platinum Group Metals (PGM), but employed different cell structures in their substrates.

This study analyzes the flow dynamics of a fluid within an operating torque converter. Transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been carried out with prescribed torque converter motions using commercially available CFD software. The analysis computes torque converter excitation forces that predict flow induced excitations during converter operation. In this study, various torque converter designs are compared and assessed with the aim of limiting flow induced excitations.

Testing Wet Clutch Systems for Anti-Shudder Performance

The wet clutch system (WCS) is a complex combination of friction plates, separator plates and fluid (lubricant). The basic function of the WCS is to transfer torque under various operating conditions such as slipping, shifting, start/launch and/or torque converter clutch (TCC) operation. Under these conditions the slope of the coefficient of friction (μ or COF) versus slip speed (μ-v) curve must be positive to prevent shudder of the WCS, a highly undesirable condition in the lubricated friction system. An extended durability duty cycle test procedure is required to evaluate the WCS during which the μ-v curve is monitored for a negative slope, a condition indicating the potential for shudder. The friction plates, separator plates, and lubricant must be tested together and remain together during the test to be properly evaluated as a WCS.

In a passenger car, suspension link bushings, engine and transmission mount bushings and bump-stops are made of elastomeric materials, to maximize the durability and comfort. Thus, deformation behavior of rubber and its durability is important for product design and development. In virtual engineering, simulating rubber fatigue is a complex exercise, since it needs right modeling strategy and coupon based testing material data. Principal stretches based Ogden model is used to characterize the hyper elastic deformation behavior of natural rubber. Fatigue crack growth approach used here for the fatigue analysis. Engine torque strut mount is used to control the engine and transmission fore aft motion and it is connected between body and Powertrain (PT) system. Powertrain events are predominant for damage contribution to mount failure. So, it is important to predict fatigue life of mount elastomer bushing under Powertrain loading.

The proliferation and increased complexity of electrified powertrains presents a challenge to the associated controls development. This paper outlines the strategy of common supervisory and domain torque management for such powertrains. The strategy covers the multitude of powertrain architectures that exist in the market today while maintaining the fundamental pillars of physics-based torque controls, state-of-the-art optimization methodologies, and common-core hybrid system constraints. The electrified powertrain torque controls that Stellantis LLC. uses include key constituents such as optimization of powertrain state that relate to optimum engine speed and transmission gear, optimization of engine and motor torques, engine start-stop management, and hybrid shift execution which manages powertrain state transitions by interacting with various external transmission systems. The common backbone of these constituents are the dynamic/kinematic equations of the powertrain.

Virtual Accelerometer Approach to Create Vibration Profile for Automotive Component Shake Test

Vibration shaker testing is a great tool of validating the vibration fatigue performance of automotive components & systems. However, the representative vibration schedule requires a pre-knowledge of the acceleration history for the test object, which usually is not available until the later development phase of a vehicle program when physical properties are available. Sometimes, a generic vibration schedule developed from the worst-case loading profiles are used with risk of lacking correlation with later full vehicle durability test such as Road Test Simulator (RTS) or Proving Ground (PG) road test due to the higher loading amplitude. This paper proposes a virtual accelerometer approach to collect acceleration responses of a component from a virtual vehicle model. First, a multiple body dynamic model will be produced for virtual load calculation over a series of digitalized virtual proving ground road profiles.

Lumped Parameter Based Thermo-Physical Modeling of Electrified Vehicle Transmission System

More stringent Federal emission regulations and fuel economy requirements have driven the automotive industry toward more efficient vehicle thermal management systems to best utilize the heat produced from burning fuel and improve driveline efficiency. The greatest part of the effort is directed toward the hybridization of automotive transmission systems. The efficiency and durability of hybrid powertrain depends on the heat generation in electric motors and their interactions among each other, ambient condition, the cooling system and the transmission component configuration. These increase the complexity of motor temperature prediction as well as the computational cost of running a conjugate heat-transfer based CFD analysis. In this paper, 1D physics based thermal model is developed which allows rapid and accurate component-wise temperature estimation of the electric motor during both steady-state and transient driving cycles.

Notch Plasticity and Fatigue Modelling of AZ31B-H24 Magnesium Alloy Sheet

Vehicle weight reduction through the use of components made of magnesium alloys is an effective way to reduce carbon dioxide emission and improve fuel economy. In the design of these components, which are mostly under cyclic loading, notches are inevitably present. In this study, surface strain distribution and crack initiation sites in the notch region of AZ31B-H24 magnesium alloy notched specimens under uniaxial load are measured via digital image correlation. Predicted strains from finite element analysis using Abaqus and LS-DYNA material types 124 and 233 are then compared against the experimental measurements during quasi-static and cyclic loading. It is concluded that MAT_233, when calibrated using cyclic tensile and compressive stress-strain curves, is capable of predicting strain at the notch root. Finally, employing Smith-Watson-Topper model together with MAT_233 results, fatigue lives of the notched specimens are estimated and compared with experimental results.

Efficiency Evaluation of Lower Viscosity ATF in a Planetary Automatic Transmission for Improved Fuel Economy

With continued industry focus on reducing parasitic transmission and driveline losses, detailed studies are required to quantify potential enablers to improve vehicle fuel economy. Investigations were undertaken to understand the influence of lower viscosity Automatic Transmission Fluids (ATF) on transmission efficiency as compared with conventional fluids. The objectives of this study were to quantify the losses of lower viscosity ATF as compared with conventional ATF, and to understand the influence of ATF properties including viscosities, base oil types, and additive packages on fuel efficiency. The transmission efficiency investigations were conducted on a test bench following a vehicle-based break-in of the transmission using a prescribed drive cycle on a chassis dynamometer. At low temperature, the lower viscosity ATF showed a clear advantage over the conventional ATF in both spin loss and loaded efficiency evaluations.
