Transient Heating of Air Bag Fabrics: Experiment and Modeling

A model is presented in which distinction is made between the contributions of the different mechanisms of heat transfer to an air bag fabric during deployment. An experimental setup, designed for simulation and recording of the thermal response of permeable and coated (impermeable) air bag fabrics, is described. Comparisons between the experimental results and numerical predictions show fair agreement. The preliminary results show that the model provides a framework in which the interplay between the three convective heat transfer coefficients (two surface and one volumetric) that affect the fabric temperature (and the heat loss from the upstream bag gas) can be examined. Currently the magnitude of these surface convective heat fluxes are being examined experimentally.

Investigation into the Noise Associated with Airbag Deployment: Part II - Injury Risk Study Using a Mathematical Model of the Human Ear

Airbag deployments are associated with loud noise of short duration, called impulse noise. Research performed in the late 1960's and early 1970's established several criteria for assessment of the risk of impulse noise-induced hearing loss for military weapons and general exposures. These criteria were modified for airbag noise in the early 1970's, but field accident statistics and experimental results with human volunteers exposed to airbags do not seem to agree with the criteria. More recent research on impulse noise from weapons firing, in particular that of Price & Kalb of the US Army Research Laboratory, has led to development of a mathematical model of the ear. This model incorporates transfer functions which alter the incident sound pressure through various parts of the ear. It also calculates a function, called the “hazard”, that is a measure of mechanical fatigue of the hair cells in the inner ear.

A Biomechanical Face for the Hybrid III Dummy

Biomechanical data on the response of the face to localized and distributed loads are analyzed to provide performance goals for a biomechanically realistic face. Previously proposed facial injury assessment techniques and dummy modifications are reviewed with emphasis on their biomechanical realism. A modification to the Hybrid III dummy, called the GM Hybrid III Deformable Face, is described. The modification produces biomechanically realistic frontal impact response for both localized and distributed facial loads and provides for contact force determination using conventional Hybrid III instrumentation. The modification retains the anthropometric and inertial properties and the forehead impact response of the standard Hybrid III head.

Investigation of Indy Car Crashes Using Impact Recorders

This paper describes the initial phases of an on-going project in the GM Motorsports Safety Technology Research Program to investigate Indy car crashes using an on-board impact recorder as the primary data collection tool. The development of a database consisting of crash investigation data patterned after national highway crash databases is discussed. The data gathered and coded includes track and incident scene information, vehicle damage, and driver injuries, as well as the vehicle decelerations measured by the impact recorder. The paper discusses the development of specifications for the impact device, the selection of the specific recorder and its implementation on a routine basis in Indy car racing. The results from incidents that produced significant data during the 1993, 1994 and 1995 racing seasons are summarized.

Adapting Farm Equipment for Workers with Disabilities

Farm workers experience a very high incidence of injuries leading to physical and cognitive (strokes, TBI) disabilities. Since 1991, the AgrAbility Project 2 and its staff have provided direct assistance and education to many U.S. farmers and farm workers. If farmers, ranchers or farm workers who become disabled continue to be employed in agriculture, often their agricultural operation must be modified and/or agricultural machinery must be modified or adaptive equipment purchased to meet their new needs. Some common tractor modifications include operator lifts, hand controls, added/modified steps and handrails, automated hitches, and custom seating. Some modifications are commercially available but others are done on an individual need basis. AgrAbility staff would welcome the opportunity to work closer with farm equipment manufacturers to create modifications that would make farming and ranching easier and safer for all.

Parallel Load Balancing Strategies for Mesh-Independent Spray Vaporization and Collision Models

Appropriate spray modeling in multidimensional simulations of diesel engines is well known to affect the overall accuracy of the results. More and more accurate models are being developed to deal with drop dynamics, breakup, collisions, and vaporization/multiphase processes; the latter ones being the most computationally demanding. In fact, in parallel calculations, the droplets occupy a physical region of the in-cylinder domain, which is generally very different than the topology-driven finite-volume mesh decomposition. This makes the CPU decomposition of the spray cloud severely uneven when many CPUs are employed, yielding poor parallel performance of the spray computation. Furthermore, mesh-independent models such as collision calculations require checking of each possible droplet pair, which leads to a practically intractable O(np2/2) computational cost, np being the total number of droplets in the spray cloud, and additional overhead for parallel communications.
