A Primer on Building a Hardware in the Loop Simulation and Validation for a 6X4 Tractor Trailer Model

This research was to model a 6×4 tractor-trailer rig using TruckSim and simulate severe braking maneuvers with hardware in the loop and software in the loop simulations. For the hardware in the loop simulation (HIL), the tractor model was integrated with a 4s4m anti-lock braking system (ABS) and straight line braking tests were conducted. In developing the model, over 100 vehicle parameters were acquired from a real production tractor and entered into TruckSim. For the HIL simulation, the hardware consisted of a 4s4m ABS braking system with six brake chambers, four modulators, a treadle and an electronic control unit (ECU). A dSPACE simulator was used as the “interface” between the TruckSim computer model and the hardware.

Mode-Dynamic Task Allocation and Scheduling for an Engine Management Real-Time System Using a Multicore Microcontroller

A variety of methodologies to use embedded multicore controllers efficiently has been discussed in the last years. Several assumptions are usually made in the automotive domain, such as static assignment of tasks to the cores. This paper shows an approach for efficient task allocation depending on different system modes. An engine management system (EMS) is used as application example, and the performance improvement compared to static allocation is assessed. The paper is structured as follows: First the control algorithms for the EMS will be classified according to operating modes. The classified algorithms will be allocated to the cores, depending on the operating mode. We identify mode transition points, allowing a reliable switch without neglecting timing requirements. As a next step, it will be shown that a load distribution by mode-dependent task allocation would be better balanced than a static task allocation.

Development of Virtual Road Wheel Input Forces for Belgian Ground

Numerical durability analysis is the only approach that can be used to assess the durability of vehicles in early stages of development. In these stages, where there are no physical prototypes available, the road wheel forces (or spindle forces) for durability testing on Belgian PG (Proving Ground) must be predicted by VPG (Virtual Proving Ground) or derived from the measured forces of predecessor vehicles. In addition, the tuning parts and geometry are not fixed at these stages. This results in the variation of spindle forces during the development stages. Therefore, it is not reasonable to choose the forces predicted at a specific tuning condition as standard forces. It is more reasonable to determine the standard forces stochastically using the DB of the measured forces of predecessor vehicles. The spindle forces measured or predicted on Belgian PG are typically stationary random.

Integrated Low Temperature Cooling System Development in Turbo Charged Vehicle Application

The Low Temperature Cooling (LTC) system is commonly developed for secondary cooling function requirements, such as forced induction air cooling, and HEV power electronics module cooling. The large heat transfer capacity of coolant allows for very compact water-cooled heat exchangers to be installed remotely for better underhood aerodynamic characteristics and more compact packaging design. An integrated LTC loop developed on a Hyundai 2.0L Turbo Charged vehicle extends a traditional WCAC (Water-cooled charged air cooler) application to include a water-cooled condenser (WCOND) module. Unlike other published LTC system design approaches, this research project emphasizes underhood airflow improvement strategy and focuses on heat transfer efficiency. This paper discusses the integrated LTC loop configuration, Low Temperature Radiator (LTR) design, coolant flow control, and others.

Development of the Active Sound Generation Technology Using Motor Driven Power Steering System

As the original engine sound is usually not enough to satisfy the driver’s desire for a sporty and fascinating sound, Active Noise Control (ANC) and Active Sound Design (ASD) have been great technologies in automobiles for a long time. However, these technologies which enhance the sound of vehicles using loud speakers or electromagnetic actuators etc. lead to the increase of cost and weight due to the use of external amplifiers or actuators. This paper presents a new technology for generating a target sound by the active control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) of a mass-production steering system. The existing steering hardware or motor is not changed, but only additional software is added. Firstly, an algorithm of this technology, called Active Sound Generation (ASG), is introduced which is compiled and included in the ECU target code. Then the high frequency noise issue and its countermeasures are presented.

Numerical Parametric Study of a Six-Stroke Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI) Engine Combustion- Part II

In order to extend the operability limit of the gasoline compression ignition (GCI) engine, as an avenue for low temperature combustion (LTC) regime, the effects of parametric variations of engine operating conditions on the performance of six-stroke GCI (6S-GCI) engine cycle are numerically investigated, using an in-house 3D CFD code coupled with high-fidelity physical sub-models along with the Chemkin library. The combustion and emissions were calculated using a skeletal chemical kinetics mechanism for a 14-component gasoline surrogate fuel. Authors’ previous study highlighted the effects of the variation of injection timing and split ratio on the overall performance of 6S-GCI engine and the unique mixing-controlled burning mode of the charge mixtures during the two additional strokes. As a continuing effort, the present study details the parametric studies of initial gas temperature, boost pressure, fuel injection pressure, compression ratio, and EGR ratio.

Real Fuel Modeling for Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine

Increasing regulatory demand for efficiency has led to development of novel combustion modes such as HCCI, GCI and RCCI for gasoline light duty engines. In order to realize HCCI as a compression ignition combustion mode system, in-cylinder compression temperatures must be elevated to reach the autoignition point of the premixed fuel/air mixture. This should be co-optimized with appropriate fuel formulations that can autoignite at such temperatures. CFD combustion modeling is used to model the auto ignition of gasoline fuel under compression ignition conditions. Using the fully detailed fuel mechanism consisting of thousands of components in the CFD simulations is computationally expensive. To overcome this challenge, the real fuel is represented by few major components of create a surrogate fuel mechanism. In this study, 9 variations of gasoline fuel sets were chosen as candidates to run in HCCI combustion mode.

A Co-Simulation Platform for Powertrain Controls Development

With the advancement of simulation software development, the efficiency of vehicle and powertrain controls research and development can be significantly improved. Traditionally, during the development of a new control algorithm, dyno or on-road testing is necessary to validate the algorithm. Physical testing is not only costly, but also time consuming. In this study, a virtual platform is developed to reduce the effort of testing. To improve the simulation accuracy, co-simulation of multiple software is suggested as each software specializes in certain area. The Platform includes Matlab Simulink, PTV Vissim, Tass Prescan and AVL Cruise. PTV Vissim is used to provide traffic environment to PreScan. PreScan is used for ego vehicle simulation and visualization. Traffic, signal and road network are synchronized in Vissim and PreScan. Powertrain system is simulated in Cruise. MATALB/Simulink serves as master of this co-simulation, and integrates the different software together.

EGR Temperature Estimation Model Including the Effect of Coolant Flow Rate for EGR Control

Recently developed gasoline engines utilize more aggressive EGR rate to meet the emissions and fuel economy regulations. The EGR temperature is often estimated by the ECU and its accuracy affects the estimations of EGR flow rate and intake air flow rate and temperature. Therefore, the accuracy of EGR temperature estimation becomes more important than ever for precise EGR rate control. Typical lookup map based EGR cooler model without the sensitivity to the coolant flow rate is acceptable and widely used if the heat capacity of the coolant side is high enough. However, the coolant flow rate under real vehicle driving conditions often visit low-speed high-load part of the engine map where the lookup map based model suffers from the accuracy issues. This paper presents an investigation of the accuracy of the lookup map based model under different heat capacity conditions. In this study, a simple EGR cooler model based on effectiveness-NTU method was also developed.

Model Based Optimization of Supervisory Control Parameters for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Supervisory control strategy of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) provides target powers and operating points of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. To promise efficient driving of the HEV, it is needed to find the proper values of control parameters which are used in the strategy. However, it is very difficult to find the optimal values of the parameters by doing experimental tests, since there are plural parameters which have dependent relationship between each other. Furthermore variation of the test results makes it difficult to extract the effect of a specific parameter change. In this study, a model based parameter optimization method is introduced. A vehicle simulation model having the most of dynamics related to fuel consumption was developed and validated with various experimental data from real vehicles. And then, the supervisory control logic including the control parameters was connected to the vehicle model.

Vehicle Drift Investigation during Straight Line Accelerating and Braking

A vehicle drifts due to several reasons from its intended straight path even in the case of no steering input. The multibody dynamic analysis of vehicle drift during accelerating and braking are performed. This paper focuses on modeling and evaluating effects of suspension parameters, differential friction, engine mounting and C.G. location of the vehicle under multibody dynamic simulation environment. Asymmetry of geometry and compliance between left and right side is considered cause of drift. The sensitivities of the suspension parameters are presented for each driving condition. In case of acceleration, the interaction of differential friction and driveshaft stiffness and their influence on drift are also studied. For braking condition, suspension parameters such as initial toe variation of rear coupled torsion beam axle type suspension and kingpin inclination deviation of front suspension are studied including the braking force difference.

Air conditioning is defined as the process of treating air so as to control simultaneously its temperature, humidity, cleanliness and distribution to meet the requirements of the conditioned space. As in the definition, the important actions involved in the operation of an air conditioning system are temperature and humidity control, air purification and movement. For these conditions this paper proposes a Automatic Climate Control(ACC) system of the bus. The system has cooling, heating, and dehumidifying modes, and is governed by dual 8-bit microprocessors. These modes are broken down into sub-modules dealing with control of the compressor, blower speed, damper position, air purifier, ventilators, preheater, air mixing damper and so on.

Development of finite element Euro-SID model

In contrast to the other types of crash simulations, integrated analysis is needed to perform the side impact simulation, and the acquired injury values are so sensitive that they are difficult to assess by the deformed vehicle structure itself. Accurate FE Euro-side impact dummy (EURO-SID) model is needed to predict the various injury values in Euro side-impact simulation. In the past, rigid body model and coarse FE model have been used. The advantage of these models is low computing power. By the way, they have lack of injury predictability in integrated simulations. The deviations are caused by inaccurate geometry and improper material characteristics expression for individual components. Therefore, new Euro side-impact dummy model is developed through mass (inertia), component and sled validation. In this paper, validation results are illustrated, and their application results in two kinds of full car simulations are introduced.

Development of primerless paintable thermoplastic polyolefin with high impact strength for vehicle interior parts

A new thermoplastic polyolefin with primerless adhesion to paint has been developed by polypropylene (PP) with α-olefin copolymers, mineral fillers and some additives. It can substantially reduce costs and environmental problems by eliminating primer treating operations, traditionally treated from trichloroethene (TCE). This new material exhibits unique solid-state texture that rubbery polymer component are typically dispersed in lamellar structure matrix. Versus conventional PP or thermoplastic olefin (TPO), it provides excellent brittle-ductile (BD) transition as well as paintability. Also it is expected to have a significant impact on interior parts as requirements for material change to an emphasis on light weight, lower cost, more efficient finishing.

Low-pressure molding compound hood panel for a passenger car

Low-pressure molding compound (LPMC) is a new kind of composite material which can be used for automotive body panels. LPMC has similar mechanical properties compared to conventional sheet molding compound (SMC) but excellent moldability due to the different thickening system. In this paper, we prepared LPMC hood prototype for a passenger car using a low-cost tooling. Inner panel and outer panel were made of general-density- and low-density-grade LPMC, respectively, in order to maximize weight reduction maintaining surface quality. Physical properties containing tensile strength, flexural modulus, notched Izod impact strength of those samples were investigated. In addition, CAE simulation was also done for strength analysis of the hood assembly.

Development of Continuously Variable Valve Lift Engine

In the present study, we developed a CVVL (Continuously Variable Valve Lift) engine. The CVVL mechanism is Hyundai Motor Company's own design, which is characterized by its compactness. The CVVL engine was developed without the increase of the engine height, thus the same hood line of the vehicle could be used with the base engine; the base engine does not adopt the CVVL technology, and it has the same engine specification other than valvetrain system. The CVVL mechanism was based on a six-linkage mechanism. Although the valvetrain friction of the CVVL engine of the six-linkage is higher than the base engine when operated with the same valve lift, it is in a competitive level compared to the other engines produced by HMC. The fuel consumption of the CVVL engine has been reduced by more than 5% compared to the base engine, and this is mainly thanks to the reduction of the pumping loss and friction.

Effects of Composite Sandwich Endplates on the Cold Start Characteristics of PEMFC

End-plates are highly stiff plates that hold together the components composing a fuel cell stack, i.e. Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEAs), Gas Distribution Layers (GDLs) and bipolar plates, offering sufficient contact pressure between them. The proper contact pressure is required not only to improve energy efficiency of a stack by decreasing ohmic loss but also to prevent leakage of fluids such as hydrogen, air, or coolant. When a fuel cell starts in cold environment, heat generated in a fuel cell stack as a result of electrochemical reactions should not be used much to increase the temperature of endplates but to melt ice inside the stack to prevent ice-blocking and to increase the temperature near the three-phase-boundary on MEAs. However, to satisfy the high stiffness required, massive metallic endplates have been used despite their inferior thermal characteristics: high thermal conductivity and large thermal inertia.
