Oil Transport from Scraper Ring Step to Liner at Low Engine Speeds and Effect of Dimensions of Scraper Ring Step

In gasoline engines, a scraper ring with a step on the bottom outer edge is widely used as a second ring. However, there lacks a fundamental understanding on the effects of this feature and its dimensions on oil transport. Inspired by observations from visualization experiments, this work combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and theoretical analysis shows that oil can be trapped in the space bordered by a second ring step and the chamfer of a piston third land. The trapped oil can be released to a liner when the piston is approaching the top dead center (TDC). This additional oil on the liner becomes a potential source of oil consumption. Such oil transport has been observed at typically less than 1500rpm. Since road vehicles often operate in this speed range, the newly-observed oil trapping and release can be closely associated with oil consumption in gasoline engines. In this work, a comprehensive study on oil trapping and release will be demonstrated.

A New Parallel Cut-Cell Cartesian CFD Code for Rapid Grid Generation Applied to In-Cylinder Diesel Engine Simulations

A new Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code has been developed in order to overcome the deficiencies of traditional grid generation and mesh motion methods. The new code uses a modified cut-cell Cartesian technique that eliminates the need for the computational grid to coincide with the geometry of interest. The code also includes state-of-the-art numerical techniques and sub-models for simulating the complex physical and chemical processes that occur in engines. Features such as shared and distributed memory parallelization, a multigrid pressure solver and user-specified grid embedding allow for efficient simulations while maintaining the grid resolution necessary for accurate engine modeling. In addition, a new Adaptive Grid Embedding (AGE) technique has been developed and implemented. Sub-models for turbulence, spray injection, spray breakup, liquid drop dynamics, ignition, combustion and emissions are also included in the code.

Ventilation Characteristics of Modeled Compact Car Part 3 Airflow Velocity Distribution with Foot Mode

Following the previous reports, ventilation characteristics in automobile was investigated by using a half-scale car model which was created by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE). In the present study, the ventilation mode of the cabin was foot mode which was the ventilation method for using in winter season. Supplied air was blown from the supply openings under the dashboard to the rear of the model via the driver's foot region in this mode. The experiment was performed in order to obtain accurate data about the airflow properties equipped with particle image velocimetry (PIV). Our experimental data is to be shared as a standard model to assess the environment within automobiles. The data is also for use in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) benchmark tests in the development of automobile air conditioning, which enables high accuracy prediction of the interior environment of automobiles.

Piston Fuel Film Observations in an Optical Access GDI Engine

A gasoline direct injection fuel spray was observed using a fired, optical access, square cross-section single cylinder research engine and high-speed video imaging. Spray interaction with the piston is described qualitatively, and the results are compared with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation results using KIVA-3V version 2. CFD simulations predicted that within the operating window for stratified charge operation, between 1% and 4% of the injected fuel would remain on the piston as a liquid film, dependent primarily on piston temperature. The experimental results support the CFD simulations qualitatively, but the amount of fuel film remaining on the piston appears to be under-predicted. High-speed video footage shows a vigorous spray impingement on the piston crown, resulting in vapor production.

Multi-Dimensional Modeling of Direct-Injection Diesel Spray Liquid Length and Flame Lift-off Length using CFD and Parallel Detailed Chemistry

Recent measurements by Siebers et al. have shown that the flame of a high pressure Diesel spray stabilizes under quiescent conditions at a location downstream of the fuel injector. The effects of various ambient and injection parameters on the flame “lift-off” length have been investigated under typical Diesel conditions in a constant-volume combustion vessel. In the present study, the experiments of Siebers et al. have been modeled using a modified version of the KIVA-3V engine simulation code. Fuel injection and spray breakup are modeled using the KH-RT model that accounts for liquid surface instabilities due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor mechanisms. Combustion is simulated using Convergent Thinking's recently developed detailed transient chemistry solver (SAGE) that allows for any number of chemical species and reactions to be modeled.

Thermal Fluid Analysis by a Mesh Free Simulation - Part 1 Analysis of the Thermal Fluid Field in a Headlamp Based on the Real 3D-CAD Model

The thermal fluid field in a headlamp based on the real 3D-CAD model is analyzed by a mesh free method. The conducted method is a new CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) solver based on the couples of the points whose density is controlled scattered in the analysis space including the boundaries, which leads to much reduce the hand-working time in the deformation of the 3D-CAD model for the mesh generation. This paper focuses on the steady state airflow field in a headlamp under the conditions of natural ventilation including the effect of the buoyancy and the heat generation of the lamp surface for the demonstration of the conducted method without not only the deformation of the real 3D-CAD model but mesh generation. The differences of the pressure outlet conditions and heat generation of the headlamp on the amount of the ventilation are also experimented.

IC Engine Intake Region Design Modifications for Loss Reduction Based on CFD Methods

Computational fluid dynamics methods are applied to the intake regions of a diesel engine in the design stage at Caterpillar. Using a complete, tested and validated computational methodology, fully viscous 3-D turbulent flow simulations are performed for three valve lifts, with the goal of identifying and understanding the physics underlying loss in the intake regions of IC engines. The results of these simulations lead to several design improvements in the intake region. These improvements are made to the computational domain, and flow simulations are again performed at three different valve lifts. Improvements in overall total pressure loss of between 5% and 33% are found in the computed results between the original and modified (improved) domains. Physical mechanisms responsible for these improvements are documented in detail.

Airflow and Thermal Analysis of Underhood Engine Enclosures

A numerical model that utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques has been developed for the analysis of underhood engine cooling systems of large slow moving vehicles. Several physical models have been developed and incorporated into a CFD code including; a) a model for predicting pressure losses due to screens and grills; b) a model for approximating the forces exerted by the fan on the flow; and c) a model for calculating the heat transfer inside the radiator. The CFD code and physical models have been demonstrated and validated against experimental data. Several three dimensional computational grids that represent various engine enclosures have been created and used to analyze the fluid flow and heat transfer inside the engine enclosure system. The computational results are compared to test data which were obtained for this study.

A CFD Study of Losses in a Straight-Six Diesel Engine

Using a previously validated and documented CFD methodology, this research simulated the flow field in the intake region (inlet duct, plenum, ports, valves, and cylinder) involving the four cylinders (#1, #3, #4, #6) of a straight-six IC engine. Each cylinder was studied with its intake valves set at high, medium and low valve lifts. All twelve viscous 3-D turbulent flow simulation models had high density, high quality computational grids and complete domains. Extremely fine grid density were applied for every simulation up to 1,000,000 finite volume cells. Results for all the cases presented here were declared “fully converged” and “grid independent”. The relative magnitude of total pressure losses in the entire intake region and loss mechanisms were documented here. It was found that the total pressure losses were caused by a number of flow mechanisms.

Numerical Simulation on Soot Formation in Diesel Combustion by Using a CFD Code Combined with a Parallelized Explicit ODE Solver

The objective of the present study is to analyze soot formation in diesel engine combustion by using multi-dimensional combustion simulations with a parallelized explicit ODE solver. Parallelized CHEMEQ2 was used to perform detailed chemical kinetics in KIVA-4 code. CHEMEQ2 is an explicit stiff ODE solver developed by Mott et al. which is known to be faster than traditional implicit ODE solvers, e.g., DVODE. In the present study, about eight times faster computation was achieved with CHEMEQ2 compared to DVODE when using a single thread. Further, by parallelizing CHEMEQ2 using OpenMP, the simulations could be run not only on calculation servers but also on desktop machines. The computation time decreases with the number of threads used. The parallelized CHEMEQ2 enabled combustion and emission characteristics, including detailed soot formation processes, to be predicted using KIVA-4 code with detailed chemical kinetics without the need for reducing the reaction mechanism.
