Computational Aeroacoustics for HVAC Systems Utilizing a Hybrid Approach

We present a recently developed computational scheme for the numerical simulation of flow induced sound for rotating systems. Thereby, the flow is computed by scale resolving simulations using an arbitrary mesh interface scheme for connecting rotating and stationary domains. The acoustic field is modeled by a perturbation ansatz resulting in a convective wave equation based on the acoustic scalar potential and the substational time derivative of the incompressible flow pressure as a source term. We use the Finite-Element (FE) method for solving the convective wave equation and apply a Nitsche type mortaring at the interface between rotating and stationary domains. The whole scheme is applied to the numerical computation of a side channel blower.

Statistical Energy Analysis of Airborne and Structure-Borne Automobile Interior Noise

This paper describes the application of Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) and Experimental SEA (ESEA) to calculating the transmission of air-borne and structure-borne noise in a mid-sized sedan. SEA can be applied rapidly in the early stages of vehicle design where the degree of geometric detail is relatively low. It is well suited to the analysis of multiple paths of vibrational energy flow from multiple sources into the passenger compartment at mid to high frequencies. However, the application of SEA is made difficult by the geometry of the vehicle's subsystems and joints. Experience with current unibody vehicles leads to distinct modeling strategies for the various frequency ranges in which airborne or structure-borne noise predominates. The theory and application of ESEA to structure-borne noise is discussed. ESEA yields loss factors and input powers which are combined with an analytical SEA model to yield a single hybrid model.

Balancing Design Functional Coupling and Sensitivity to Noise to Achieve the Design Target

The primary objective in design is to achieve the target value of the design's response function. If a design fails to achieve the target value, it most likely fails in two ways: inconsistent functional output and in design involving multiple response functions, unable to converge to the multiple target values in spite of iterative adjustment of the design parameters. The former is symptom of a design not able to perform in the presence of variability, i.e., noise. The latter is symptom of a design that fails to perform in the presence of functional coupling. Both problems are best addressed at the conceptual stage of the design at which only design solution that is inherently robust to noise and functionally uncoupled is entertained. If this is not possible, the alternative is to exploit the interaction between control variables and variables that are sources of noise and functional coupling to render the design insensitive to them.

Squeak Studies on Material Pair Compatibility

The more noise and vibration improvements are incorporated into our vehicles, the more customers notice squeaks and rattles (S&R). Customers increasingly perceive S&R as a direct indicator of vehicle build quality and durability. The high profile nature of S&R has the automotive industry striving to develop the understanding and technology of how to improve the S&R performance in the vehicle. Squeaks and itches make up a significant amount of Squeak and Rattle complaints found in today's vehicles. Squeaks and itches are the result of stick slip behavior between two interacting surfaces. Squeak itch behavior is dependent upon a large number of parameters including but not limited to: the material itself, temperature, humidity, normal load, system compliance, part geometry, velocity, surface roughness, wear, contaminants, etc. This paper will describe the analysis of sound data and friction data and the relationship between them.

The Application of Direct Body Excitation Toward Developing a Full Vehicle Objective Squeak and Rattle Metric

In order to engineer Squeak & Rattle (S&R) free vehicles it is essential to develop an objective measurement method to compare and correlate with customer satisfaction and subjective S&R assessments. Three methods for exciting S&Rs -type surfaces. Excitation methods evaluated were road tests over S&R surfaces, road simulators, and direct body excitation (DBE). The principle of DBE involves using electromagnetic shakers to induce controlled, road-measured vibration into the body, bypassing the tire patch and suspension. DBE is a promising technology for making objective measurements because it is extremely quiet (test equipment noise does not mask S&Rs), while meeting other project goals. While DBE is limited in exposing S&Rs caused by body twist and suspension noises, advantages include higher frequency energy owing to electro-dynamic shakers, continuous random excitation, lower capital cost, mobility, and safety.

Advances in Complex Eigenvalue Analysis for Brake Noise

Brake squeal has been analyzed by finite elements for some time. Among several methods, complex eigenvalue analysis is proving useful in the design process. It requires hardware verification and it falls into a simulation process. However, it is fast and it can provide guidance for resolving engineering problems. There are successes as well as frustrations in implementing this analysis tool. Its capability, robustness and reliability are closely examined in many companies. Generally, the low frequency squealing mechanism is a rotor axial direction mode that couples the pads, rotor, and other components; while higher frequency squeal mainly exhibits a rotor tangential mode. Design modifications such as selection of rotor design, insulator, chamfer, and lining materials are aimed specifically to cure these noise-generating mechanisms. In GM, complex eigenvalue analysis is used for brake noise analysis and noise reduction. Finite element models are validated with component modal testing.

2002 Pontiac Montana Frequency Improvements Employing Structural Foam

This paper documents a joint development process between General Motors and Dow Automotive to improve primary body structure frequencies on the GM family of midsize vans by utilizing cavity-filling structural foam. Optimum foam locations, foam quantity, and foam density within the body structure were determined by employing both math-based modeling and vehicle hardware testing techniques. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations of the Body-In-White (BIW) and “trimmed body” were used to predict the global body structure modes and associated resonant frequencies with and without structural foam. The objective of the FEA activity was to quantify frequency improvements to the primary body structure modes of matchboxing, bending, and torsion when using structural foam. Comprehensive hardware testing on the vehicle was also executed to validate the frequency improvements observed in the FEA results.

On the Use of Spatial Transmissibility to Evaluate the NVH Performance of Engine Cover Assembly

In the present study, the NVH performance of an engine valve cover assembly is analyzed by the use of “spatial transmissibility (TR)”. It is a measure of the spatial response of the cover relative to the spatial response of the underlying structure to which it is connected. A prototyped engine valve cover assembly is examined. The cover transmissibility is computed through the finite element method and also measured by experimental testing. Various isolation systems have been examined and different cover materials have been investigated, including magnesium and thermosetting plastic. The transmissibility provides a strategy for evaluating the NVH characteristic of engine cover assembly in a much more timely, cost-effective manner, while the product is still in the early conceptual stage.

Acoustic Analysis of Isolated Engine Valve Covers

The powertrain engine is a major source of vibration and noise in automotive vehicles. Among the powertrain components, the valve cover has been identified as one of the main noise contributors due to its large radiating surface and thin shell-like structure. There has been an increasing demand for rapid assessment of the valve cover noise level in the early product design stages. The present study analyzes the radiated sound pressure level (SPL) of a valve cover assembly using the finite element method (FEM). The analysis is first performed using a fully coupled structural-acoustic approach. In this case the solid structure is directly coupled to the enclosed and surrounding air in a single analysis, and the structural and acoustic fields are solved simultaneously. In the next approach, the analysis is performed in a sequential manner, using a submodeling technique. First, the structural vibration of the cover is analyzed in the absence of the surrounding air.

The application of Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) to vehicle development is discussed, with a new technique to implement noise path analysis within a SEA model to enable efficient solution and optimization of acoustic trim. A whole vehicle Performance-Based SEA model is used, in which Sound Transmission Loss (STL) and acoustic absorption coefficient characterize subsystem performance. In such a model, the net contribution from each body panel/path, such as the floor, to a specific interior subsystem, such as the driver's head space, is extremely important for vehicle interior noise development. First, it helps to identify the critical path to root-cause potential problems. Second, it is necessary in order to perform balancing of path contributions. With current software, the power based noise contribution analysis is for direct paths/adjacent subsystems.

The Anatomy of Knock

The combustion process after auto-ignition is investigated. Depending on the non-uniformity of the end gas, auto-ignition could initiate a flame, produce pressure waves that excite the engine structure (acoustic knock), or result in detonation (normal or developing). For the “acoustic knock” mode, a knock intensity (KI) is defined as the pressure oscillation amplitude. The KI values over different cycles under a fixed operating condition are observed to have a log-normal distribution. When the operating condition is changed (over different values of λ, EGR, and spark timing), the mean (μ) of log (KI/GIMEP) decreases linearly with the correlation-based ignition delay calculated using the knock-point end gas condition of the mean cycle. The standard deviation σ of log(KI/GIMEP) is approximately a constant, at 0.63. The values of μ and σ thus allow a statistical description of knock from the deterministic calculation of the ignition delay using the mean cycle properties

Time-Domain Simulation Approach for the Electromagnetically Excited Vibrations of Squirrel-Cage Induction Machine Drives under Pulse-Width Modulated Supply

In this paper, the multi-physical simulation workflow from electromagnetics to structural dynamics for a squirrel-cage induction machine is explored. In electromagnetic simulations, local forces and rotor torque are calculated for specific speed-torque operation points. In order to consider non-linearities and interaction with control system as well as transmission, time-domain simulations are carried out. For induction machines, the computational effort with full transient numerical methods like finite element analysis (FEA) is very high. A novel reduced order electro-mechanical model is presented. It still accounts for vibro-acoustically relevant harmonics due to pulse-width modulation (PWM), slotting, distributed winding and saturation effects, but is substantially faster (minutes to hours instead of days to weeks per operation point).

Friction Induced Vibration: Brake Moan

Techniques have been developed to model friction induced vibration and these were applied to the brake moan of a vehicle. A vehicle system model and the MSC/NASTRAN solutions for geometric nonlinear and complex modes were modified by DMAP for friction input. To assess stability, a position of steady sliding equilibrium was found. Then a complex modes solution was done to find negatively damped modes. Mode shape animation of all the unstable modes showed that there was a 90° out of phase vibration. This produced a design modification on a test vehicle which stabilized the vibration and eliminated brake moan.

Utilization of a Chassis Dynamometer for Development of Exterior Noise Control Systems

The development of systems and components for control of exterior noise has traditionally been done through an iterative process of on road testing. Frequently, road testing of vehicle modifications are delayed due to ambient environmental changes that prevent testing. Vehicle dynamometers used for powertrain development often had limited space preventing far field measurements. Recently, several European vehicle manufacturers constructed facilities that provided adequate space for simulation of the road test. This paper describes the first implementation of that technology in the U.S.. The facility is typical of those used world wide, but it is important to recognize some of the challenges to effective utilization of the technique to correlate this measurement to on road certification.

Sound Radiation of Engine Covers With Acoustic Infinite Element Method

The engine valve cover is known to be major contributor to powertrain noise due to its large surface area and relatively small thickness. Thus, the acoustic analysis of the valve cover has become one of the key steps in the design process. The present paper describes an acoustic infinite element approach to model the sound radiation of the valve cover. The valve cover bolted to the engine block behaves like a vibrating membrane in an acoustic medium of infinite extent. Typically, the effect of the infinite medium is modeled using either the boundary element method (BEM), or by specifying an equivalent boundary impedance on the terminating surface of an acoustic finite element mesh (NRBC). In this paper, a third method is introduced, wherein the boundary impedances are replaced by acoustic infinite elements. The methodology is presented using two different models. In the first model, a cover with a geometrically simple shape is analyzed.

Spatial Transmissibility of Plastic Cylinder-Head Covers

The transmissibility technique has been traditionally used for evaluating the NVH performance of isolated, rigid structures such as the elastomer mount isolated automobile engine. The transmissibility quantity provides information on how a structure reduces vibration as subjected to dynamic loading and thereby attenuates noise. In the present study, the transmissibility is applied to a non-rigid, plastic structure - the engine cylinder-head cover module. The cover module includes primarily a thin, plate-like cover and the elastomer isolation system. At low frequencies, the cover will behave as a rigid mass and thus display a major peak at its resonant frequency. At high frequencies, the cover will vibrate as a flexible panel and thus display multiple peaks with magnitudes differing from point to point across the cover surface. As a result, the transmissibility calculated would have a spatial resolution, called the spatial transmissibility.

EQUIPMENT for measuring vibration in airplane structures and powerplants during actual flight is described in this paper. This development is the result of a cooperative research program carried out by the Bureau of Aeronautics of the U. S. Navy and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with contributions of improvements in design and new features by the Sperry Gyroscope Co., Inc. In its essentials, the M.I.T.-Sperry Apparatus consists of a number of electrical pickup units which operate a central amplifying and recording unit. The recorder is a double-element photographic oscillograph. Each pickup is adapted especially to the type of vibration that it is intended to measure and is made so small that it does not appreciably affect the vibration characteristics of the member to which it is attached rigidly. By using a number of systematically placed pickups, all the necessary vibration information on an airplane can be recorded during a few short flights.

THIS description of the hydraulic control used with the hydra-matic transmission reveals how the control operates to change ratios under power without direction from the driver. The control's pattern of automatic shifting for ordinary, high-range driving has been selected as the best compromise between top performance and low ratio of engine noise to wind noise. The control's low range shifts gears according to performance dictates alone, furnishing greater power for extreme conditions at low speeds and enabling the driver to use his engine as a brake on steep descents. Heart of the control system is a double hydraulic governor, sensitive both to car speed and throttle opening. THIS paper, as well as the two that follow, one by Messrs. Nutt and Smirl and the other by Mr. Kimberly, make up a symposium on automatic transmission components presented at the 1947 SAE Summer Meeting.
