Design and Performance of Low-Viscosity ATF

Low-viscosity automatic transmission fluids (ATF) have advantages in terms of lower churning losses and lower drag resistance in the automatic transmission (AT) and higher transmission efficiency. While a low viscosity is effective to the improvement of fuel economy, there is a risk of degraded fatigue prevention performances or anti-wear properties of the ATF, which can have an adverse effect on the reliability of the AT. Consequently, the use of current low-viscosity ATFs were limited to AT units that were specially developed to use them. The aim of our study was to resolve these problems and improve the general versatility of low-viscosity ATFs. We developed a low-viscosity ATF having high reliability by designing its viscosity based on the field test data involving conventional commercial fluids of normal viscosity design (7.4mm2/s@100°C), and by optimizing the blend of base stocks and viscosity index improvers (VI improvers).

A New Five-Speed Nissan Automatic Transmission for Passenger Cars

An electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission has been developed for use in new 2-liter models. This high-performance gearbox is the world's first five-speed automatic transmission for passenger car use to be equipped with a torque converter. It is designed with an ultra-wide range and close ratio gearing and incorporates a host of outstanding technologies to provide excellent performance and driveability. This paper describes the major features and performance of this new automatic transmission and some of the studies undertaken concerning multiplication of gear steps.

Development of a Slip Control System for a Lock-Up Clutch

Lock-up operation of an automatic transmission is known as one good method of improving fuel economy. However, locking up the transmission at low vehicle speeds can often cause undesirable vibration or booming noise. Slip control of the lock-up clutch can resolve these problems, but the speed difference of the lock-up clutch needs to be controlled at a certain value. This control system has to overcome large changes in the parameters of the lock-up system at low vehicle speeds and also changes with regard to the speed ratio in a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In this study, this complex non-linear system has been modeled as a first-order linear parameter varying (LPV) system. A robust control algorithm was applied taking various disturbances into account to design a new slip lock-up control system.

Development of Pitting Resistant Steel for Transmission Gears

It was found that pitting resistance of gears is strongly influenced by resistance to temper softening of carburized steel. The investigation about the influence of chemical compositions on hardness after tempering revealed that silicon, chromium and molybdenum are effective elements to improve resistance to temper softening and pitting resistance. Considering the production of gears, molybdenum is unfavorable because it increases hardness of normalized or annealed condition. Developed new steel contains about 0.5 mass% of silicon and 2.7 mass% chromium. The new steel has excellent pitting resistance and wear resistance. Fatigue and impact strength are equivalent to conventional carburized steels. Cold-formability and machinability of the new steel are adequate for manufacturing gears because of its ordinary hardness before carburizing. The new steel has already been put to practical use in automatic transmission gears. Application test results are also reported.

Oxidation Stability of Automatic Transmission Fluids -A Study by the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) ATF Subcommittee

The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) ATF subcommittee members have compared the two oxidation bench test methods, Aluminum Beaker Oxidation Test (ABOT) and Indiana Stirring Oxidation Stability Test (ISOT), using a number of factory-fill and service-fill ATFs obtained in Japan and in the US. In many cases, the ATFs were more severely oxidized after the ABOT procedure than after the same duration of the ISOT procedure. The relative severity of these two tests was influenced by the composition of the ATFs. The bench test oxidation data were compared with the transmission and the vehicle oxidation test data.

The JR507E type 5-speed automatic transmission (AT) which was installed in the new model Nissan CIMA was released at the beginning of the 21st century. The antishudder performance of automatic transmission fluids (ATFs) and belt-drive continuously variable transmission fluids (B-CVTFs) used in automotive transmissions equipped with slip control torque converter lock-up clutch systems is an important issue. These fluids require both initial antishudder performance and antishudder durability, but most researchers have mainly studied antishudder durability. This paper describes the initial frictional properties-break-in properties-of some commercial ATFs and B-CVTFs using a low velocity friction apparatus (LVFA).

Electronic control of automatic transmission systems have become indispensable in order to satisfy driver expectations of comfort and vehicle response. The increasing complexity of such systems has resulted in a huge increase of control data volumes handled by electronic transmission control units (ETCUs). This paper describes the development, operation and evaluation by JATCO Corporation and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd of a Read Only Memory (ROM) management system for use with ETCUs. The system makes extensive use of computer aided design(CAD) techniques to create ROM data from standard format drawings, and vice-versa. The paper also presents the evaluation system developed for ETCU use. Making use of computer simulated testing, this increases the reliability of units and reduces testing time.

A New Approach to Finding Optimum Planetary Gear Trains for Automatic Transmissions

There has been a growing need to develop more compact automatic transmissions with a greater number of speeds for better fuel economy and better driveability. This study investigated a method for determining suitable planetary gear trains for today's transmissions. A computer program has been developed for application to five-speed transmissions consisting of two planetary gearsets. By analyzing various gear train possibilities, the program can identify which gearsets are suitable for different conditions, including the number of speeds, the number of binding elements, topological suitability and other factors.

The Evaluation of the Fuel-Economy Performance of Low-Viscosity Drive-Train Lubricants and the Development of Oils with Improved Fatigue Life

In recent years, progress has been made in reducing the viscosities of manual transmission fluids (MTFs) and automatic transmission fluids (ATFs). Lower viscosities of MTFs and ATFs are expected to improve the fuel economy of automobiles by reducing the viscous resistance. Examples of low-viscosity ATFs already commercially available include Toyota Auto Fluid WS and ZF Friedrichshafen AG's ZNF 13014. This paper first reports methods for measuring the torque transmission efficiency in manual and automatic transmissions. We explain a simple rig test that we developed using an IAE gear test machine, and we describe oil temperature increase tests and torque measurement tests using actual transmissions and fuel economy tests using actual vehicles. Next, we describe the effects of lower viscosities on the torque transfer efficiency as measured with these measurement methods.

Improved Automatic Transmission Provides Smoother Shifting through Accurate Hydraulic Control

The operating characteristics of the check valve in the clutch piston of an automatic transmission have a great effect on the shifting performance and durability of the developed clutch package test rig was used to visualize the flow and make pressure measurements in the vicinity of the check valve. The results indicate that the strength of the vortex just in front of the check valve strongly influences the opening and closing hydraulic pressure of the valve. It was also found that the vortex causes a pressure drop, which is related to the rotating speed of the clutch piston, oil volume discharged from the check valve and valve geometry. These results were used to design an improved check valve which provides a suitable oil pressure curve for achieving smoother shifting.

This paper describes the Nissan R01A model automatic transmission, focusing in particular on the basic design concept, control system and the various control techniques it incorporates. This 4-speed transmission, installed in Nissan's rear-wheel-drive vehicles, was designed from the ground up and significant construction and control mechanism improvements were made over the former conventional model. With a compact gear arrangement consisting of two sets of planetary gears, this transmission features a new electro-hydraulic control system which not only provides optimum shifting and lock-up points, but also modulates the hydraulic pressure electronically to achieve superior shift quality. Control over the transmission is integrated with engine control to deliver improved driveability and better fuel economy. Different transmission variations have been developed to create a versatile lineup for rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

Anti-Shudder Property of Automatic Transmission Fluids - A Study by the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) ATF Subcommittee

In recent years, the slip lock-up mechanism has been adopted widely, because of its fuel efficiency and its ability to improve NVH. This necessitates that the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) used in automatic transmissions with slip lock-up clutches requires anti-shudder performance characteristics. The test methods used to evaluate the anti-shudder performance of an ATF can be classified roughly into two types. One is specified to measure whether a μ-V slope of the ATF is positive or negative, the other is the evaluation of the shudder occurrence in the practical vehicle. The former are μ-V property tests from MERCON® V, ATF+4®, and JASO M349-98, the latter is the vehicle test from DEXRON®-III. Additionally, in the evaluation of the μ-V property, there are two tests using the modified SAE No.2 friction machine and the modified low velocity friction apparatus (LVFA).

Performance of a CVT Fluid for High Torque Transmitting Belt-CVTs

A new belt-drive continuously variable Transmission (B-CVT) was introduced into the Japanese market in September 1997 by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. It transmits a maximum torque of 196 Nm and represents a major breakthrough of the torque limit transmitted by B-CVTs, thus opening a new epoch for the automatic transmission. The major features of the CVT are transmission of high torque between a steel belt and pulleys, electronic control of high hydraulic-pressure to pulleys and a torque converter with an electronically controlled lockup clutch engaging at low vehicle speeds. A CVT fluid formulated for this CVT was designed to optimize these features and this paper describes the performance of the CVT fluid in lab-scale tests and an endurance test of the CVT unit. In order to realize high torque transmission between a steel belt and pulleys, high friction between metal/metal contacts is required with normal wear.
