An Efficient Re-Analysis Methodology for Vibration of Large-Scale Structures

Finite element analysis is a well-established methodology in structural dynamics. However, optimization and/or probabilistic studies can be prohibitively expensive because they require repeated FE analyses of large models. Various reanalysis methods have been proposed in order to calculate efficiently the dynamic response of a structure after a baseline design has been modified, without recalculating the new response. The parametric reduced-order modeling (PROM) and the combined approximation (CA) methods are two re-analysis methods, which can handle large model parameter changes in a relatively efficient manner. Although both methods are promising by themselves, they can not handle large FE models with large numbers of DOF (e.g. 100,000) with a large number of design parameters (e.g. 50), which are common in practice. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of the PROM and CA methods are first discussed in detail.

Effect of Material Microstructure on Scuffing Behavior of Ferrous Alloys

Scuffing is one of the major problems that influence the life cycle and reliability of several auto components, including engine cylinder kits, flywheels, camshafts, crankshafts, and gears. Ferrous casting materials, such as gray cast iron, ductile cast iron and austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) are widely applied in these components due to their self-lubricating characteristics. The purpose of this research is to determine the scuffing behavior of these three types of cast iron materials and compare them with 1050 steel. Rotational ball-on-disc tests were conducted with white mineral oil as the lubricant under variable sliding speeds and loads. The results indicate that the scuffing initiation is due to either crack propagation or plastic deformation. It is found that ADI exhibits the highest scuffing resistance among these materials.

Tooth Mesh Characterization of Spur Gear Pairs with Surface Pitting Damage

A finite element/contact mechanics (FE/CM) method is used to determine the tooth contact forces, static transmission error, and tooth pair stiffnesses for spur gear pairs that have pitting damage. The pitting damage prevents portions of the tooth surface from carrying load, which results in meaningfully different contact pressure distribution on the gear teeth and deformations at the mesh. Pits of elliptical shape are investigated. Parametric analyses are used to investigate the effect of pit width (along the tooth face) and height (along the tooth profile) on the gear tooth mesh interface. Pitting damage increases static transmission error and decreases tooth pair stiffness. Tooth contact forces differ only in the portions of the mesh cycle when multiple pairs of teeth are in contact and share the transmitted load. Pitting damage does not change the loads when only a single pair of teeth are in contact.

This “simple” task is a complex system that requires various independent sources to communicate efficiently and effectively to produce a robust and reliable output. The sending and receiving devices are required to be on the same network - which involves reliable and secure connection. This allows the sending of the URL of the chosen feature to the server provider, which will then connect to the receiver embedded electronics where the authentication process that protects Digital Rights Management (DRM) is established. In the era of developing autonomous and luxury vehicles, this technology has the potential to add a new dimension of in-vehicle entertainment that could come very close to the home experience.

Residual Stresses in As-Quenched Aluminum Castings

A significant amount of residual stresses can be developed in aluminum castings during heat treatment. This paper reports an experimental study of the residual stress distributions in aluminum castings after solution treatment and water quench. The residual stresses in aluminum castings are measured using both optical and resistance strain rosettes. The optical strain rosette technique was recently developed in conjunction with ring-core cutting method for residual stress measurement. The measured residual stresses from optical and resistance strain rosettes are compared with the results of X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements. The advantages and disadvantages of various measurement methods are discussed.

An Improved Reanalysis Method Using Parametric Reduced Order Modeling for Linear Dynamic Systems

Finite element analysis is a standard tool for deterministic or probabilistic design optimization of dynamic systems. The optimization process requires repeated eigenvalue analyses which can be computationally expensive. Several reanalysis techniques have been proposed to reduce the computational cost including Parametric Reduced Order Modeling (PROM), Combined Approximations (CA), and the Modified Combined Approximations (MCA) method. Although the cost of reanalysis is substantially reduced, it can still be high for models with a large number of degrees of freedom and a large number of design variables. Reanalysis methods use a basis composed of eigenvectors from both the baseline and the modified designs which are in general linearly dependent. To eliminate the linear dependency and improve accuracy, Gram Schmidt orthonormalization is employed which is costly itself.
