Modeling of Active and Passive Damping Patches with Application to a Transmission Casing Cover

Combined active and passive damping is a recent trend that can be an effective solution to challenging NVH problems, especially for lightweight vehicle components that demand advanced noise and vibration treatments. Compact patches are of particular interest due to their small size and cost, however, improved modeling techniques are needed at the design stage for such methods. This paper presents a refined modeling procedure for side-by-side active and passive damping patches applied to thin, plate-like, powertrain casing structures. As an example, a plate with fixed boundaries is modeled as this is representative of real-life transmission covers which often require damping treatments. The proposed model is then utilized to examine several cases of active and passive patch location, and vibration reduction is determined in terms of insertion loss for each case.

Effect of Aerodynamically Induced Pre-Swirl on Centrifugal Compressor Acoustics and Performance

The effect of aerodynamically induced pre-swirl on the acoustic and performance characteristics of an automotive centrifugal compressor is studied experimentally on a steady-flow turbocharger facility. Accompanying flow separation, broadband noise is generated as the flow rate of the compressor is reduced and the incidence angle of the flow relative to the leading edge of the inducer blades increases. By incorporating an air jet upstream of the inducer, a tangential (swirl) component of velocity is added to the incoming flow, which improves the incidence angle particularly at low to mid-flow rates. Experimental data for a configuration with a swirl jet is then compared to a baseline with no swirl. The induced jet is shown to improve the surge line over the baseline configuration at all rotational speeds examined, while restricting the maximum flow rate. At high flow rates, the swirl jet increases the compressor inlet noise levels over a wide frequency range.

Acoustic Characteristics of Automotive Catalytic Converter Assemblies

An experimental study of the acoustic characteristics of automotive catalytic converters is presented. The investigation addresses the effects and relative importance of the elements comprising a production catalytic converter assembly including the housing, substrate, mat and seals. Attenuation characteristics are measured for one circular and one oval catalytic converter geometry, each having 400 cell per square inch substrates. For each geometry, experimental results are presented to address the effect of individual components in isolation, and in combination with other assembly components. Additional experiments investigate the significance of acoustic paths around the substrate and through the peripheral wall of the substrate. The experimental results are compared to address the significance of each component on the overall attenuation.

The capabilities of the servo press for varying the ram speed during stroke and for adjusting the stroke length are well known. Various companies installed servo presses for blanking. Some of the considerations may include increase in productivity and flexibility in adjusting the ram stroke, noise reduction and improvement of edge quality of blanked edge. The objectives of this study are to determine the effect of ram (blanking) speed upon the edge quality, and the effect of multiple step blanking using several punch motions, during one blanking stroke.

Prediction of Broadband Noise in an Automotive Centrifugal Compressor with Three-Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics Detached Eddy Simulations

Centrifugal compressors for automotive turbochargers must operate over wide speed and flow ranges to provide the required air pressure and mass flow rate to the intake manifold of the internal combustion engines. At a fixed rotational speed, the flow field near the inducer of the impeller becomes increasingly unstable with decreasing flow rate, as the incidence angle grows between the air flow approaching the impeller, relative to the tangent of the main impeller blades at the leading edge. Flow field measurements conducted earlier have revealed that once the incidence angle exceeds a critical value (nearly independent of rotational speed) of approximately 15°, reversed flow near the periphery (blade tips) starts penetrating upstream of the impeller, with a high tangential velocity in the direction of impeller rotation.

Turbocharger Centrifugal Compressor Casing Treatment for Improved BPF Noise Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

The conventional ported shroud recirculation casing treatment elevates narrowband noise at blade pass frequency. A new ported shroud recirculating casing treatment was implemented in Ford’s 3.5L turbo gas engine as Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) counter measure to reduce whoosh (broadband flow noise) noise without elevating narrowband noise at blade pass frequency. The new ported shroud design incorporates holes between the main and secondary recirculating passage and a slight cross-sectional area reduction just upstream of the impeller. These design features reduce whoosh noise without elevating the first order and the sixth order tonal noise at blade pass frequency. The new ported shroud design decreases narrowband tonal noise sound pressure level by 3-6 dB in the low to mid flow region compared to the baseline design. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools were used to develop this casing treatment design.

A Numerical Study of Trailing Edge Serrations on Sunroof Buffeting Noise Reduction

A numerical study on sunroof noise reduction is carried out. One of the strategies to suppress the noise is to break down the strong vortices impinging upon the trailing edge of the sunroof into smaller eddies. In the current study, a serrated sunroof trailing edge with sinusoidal profiles of wavelengths is investigated for the buffeting noise reduction. A number of combinations of wavelengths and amplitudes of sinusoidal profiles is employed to examine the effects of trailing edge serrations on the noise reduction. A generic vehicle model is used in the study and a straight trailing edge is considered as a baseline. The results indicate that the trailing edge serration has a significant impact on the sound pressure level (SPL) in the vehicle cabin and it can reduce the SPL by up to 10~15 dB for the buffeting frequency.
