Practical Uses for Road Noise Cancellation

Today’s automotive customers have come to expect luxury and electric vehicles to be quiet and refined pieces of machinery. As customers have come to expect powertrain cancellation in most vehicles today, they are also increasingly looking for a reduction in road noise to improve their overall perception of luxury and electric vehicles. While the field of noise cancellation is ever expanding, several auto makers are exploring the possibility of introducing a real time Road Noise Cancellation (RNC) system to meet these customer expectations. An RNC system can be integrated into the vehicle infotainment system and be utilized to either noticeably reduce or shape the vehicle noise floor. This paper will look at the current traditional Noise and Vibration (N&V) methods of reducing road noise and then also the benefits associated with actively controlling the amount of road noise using an RNC system.

Ensuring the robustness of vehicle systems and features is a key aspect of customer satisfaction and therefore is of vital importance to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Both initial quality and quality over the life of the vehicle are important aspects to customers. Therefore, some features and systems require an active approach at monitoring system health. The intent of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) systems in vehicles is to increase the customer’s perception of vehicle refinement and brand quality. Due to the nature of ANC system operation, it is critical that the system does not go divergent resulting in unwanted noise being heard by the customer. So, a method to monitor the ANC system operation and performance is required to ensure robustness. Despite tuning ANC systems considering expected vehicle build tolerances, vehicle aging and customer specific use cases, an ANC system can occasionally still go divergent in the field.

Improved Customer Experience through Electric Vehicle Sound Enhancement

Electric Vehicles are typically thought of as being quiet and refined, but they do come with some unique N&V challenges. Some of these challenges include a natural sound that can be undesirable due to its tonal nature, presence of high frequency, discontinuities in sound, and characteristics and levels that do not always naturally increase with motor torque and vehicle speed. One approach to address those challenges is Electric Vehicle Sound Enhancement (EVSE) which is a software feature embedded within the infotainment system. EVSE can be used to improve the perception of the vehicle by enhancing the preferred natural sounds of the vehicle, masking unusual and annoying components of the sound and aurally conveying information related to the vehicle performance. A jury study was conducted to better understand how EVSE can be used to accomplish this.
