Adaptive Optimal Management Strategy for Hybrid Vehicles Based on Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle

The energy management strategies (EMS) for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) have a great impact on the fuel economy (FE). The Pontryagin's minimum principle (PMP) has been proved to be a viable control strategy for HEV. The optimal costate of the PMP control can be determined by the given information of the driving conditions. Since the full knowledge of future driving conditions is not available, this paper proposed a dynamic optimization method for PMP costate without the prediction of the driving cycle. It is known that the lower fuel consumption the method yields, the more efficiently the engine works. The selection of costate is designed to make the engine work in the high efficiency range. Compared with the rule-based control, the proposed method by the principle of Hamiltonian, can make engine working points have more opportunities locating in the middle of high efficiency range, instead of on the boundary of high efficiency range.

Investigation of the Impacts of Spark Plug Orientation on Combustion Stability under Lean SI Operation

The increasingly stringent restrictions on vehicle emissions and fuel consumption are driving the development of gasoline engines towards lean combustion. Increasing ignition energy has been considered an effective way to achieve lean operation conditions. To further improve the lean limit of engine combustion, the influence of the spark plug orientation on the combustion stability under lean operation should be explored. In this investigation, the original machine spark plug orientation, 90 degrees clockwise rotation, and 180 degrees clockwise rotation are studied to analyze the impact of spark plug orientation. The combustion experiment was carried out under the condition of low excess air ratio of the original machine and high excess air ratio with a 450 mA high energy ignition.

Characteristics of Combustion and Emissions in a DI Engine Fueled with Biodiesel Blends from Soybean Oil

Combustion and emission characteristics of diesel and biodiesel blends (soybean methyl ester) were studied in a single-cylinder Direct Injection (DI) engine at different loads and a constant speed. The results show that NOx emission and fuel consumption are increased with increasing biodiesel percentage. Reduction of smoke opacity is significant at higher loads with a higher biodiesel ratio. Compared with the baseline diesel fuel, B20 (20% biodiesel) has a slight increase of NOx emission and similar fuel consumption. Smoke emission of B20 is close to that of diesel fuel. Results of combustion analysis indicate that start of combustion (SOC) for biodiesel blends is earlier than that for diesel. Higher biodiesel percentage results in earlier SOC. Earlier SOC for biodiesel blends is due to advanced injection timing from higher density and bulk modulus and lower ignition delay from higher cetane number.

Characteristics of Output Performances and Emissions of Diesel Engine Employed Common Rail Fueled with Biodiesel Blends from Wasted Cooking Oil

In this paper, the characteristics of performance and emissions of diesel and biodiesel blends are studied in a four-cylinder DI engine employing common rail injection system. The results show that engine output power is further reduced and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increased with the increase of the blend concentration. B100 provides average reduction by 8.6% in power and increase by 11% in BSFC. With respect to the emissions, although NOx emissions were increased with increasing the blend concentration, the increase depends on the load. Filter smoke number is reduced with increasing the blend concentration. At the same time, NO, NO2 and other specific emissions are also investigated. In addition, difference of performance and emission between standard parameters of ECU and modified parameters of ECU is investigated for B10 and B20 based on same output power. The results show that NOx emission and FSN are still lower than baseline diesel.

Transient Characteristics of Combustion and Emissions during Start up at Higher Cranking Speed in a PFI Engine for HEV Application

The transient characteristics of combustion and emissions during the engine start up at different higher cranking speeds for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications were presented in this paper. Cycle-by-cycle analysis was done for each start up case. Intake air mass during the first several cycles decrease as the engine was cranked at higher speed. Ignition timing is delayed with higher cranking speed, which leads to an increase of exhaust temperature. For various start up cases, similar quantity of fuel is injected at the first cycle, but the ignition timing is significantly delayed to meet the acceleration requirement when cranking speed enhanced. Because of the deterioration of intake charge, the air-fuel mixture is over-enriched in the first several cycles for the cases at higher cranking speed. With cranking speed is increased, the in-cylinder residual gas fraction rises, which leads to poor combustion and decrease of mass fraction of burned fuel.

Combustion and Emissions of Ethanol Fuel (E100) in a Small SI Engine

An air-cooled, four-stroke, 125 cc electronic gasoline fuel injection SI engine for motorcycles is altered to burn ethanol fuel. The effects of nozzle orifice size, fuel injection duration, spark timing and the excess air/ fuel ratio on engine power output, fuel and energy consumptions and engine exhaust emission levels are studied on an engine test bed. The results show that the maximum engine power output is increased by 5.4% and the maximum torque output is increased by 1.9% with the ethanol fuel in comparison with the baseline. At full load and 7000 r/min, HC emission is decreased by 38% and CO emission is decreased 46% on average over the whole engine speed range. However, NOx levels are increased to meet the maximum power output. The experiments of the spark timing show that the levels of HC and NOx emission are decreased markedly by the delay of spark timing.

Homogeneous Charge Preparation of Diesel Fuel by Spray Impingement onto a Hot Surface at Intake Manifold

A segment of steel tube with the inner diameter of 60 mm and length of 100 mm was fixed between the intake manifold and cylinder head in a direct injection natural aspirated diesel engine. The surface of the tube could be heated to be above 400 °C by the heater enwrapped outside within several minutes under the power less than 600 W. The tip of an injector traditionally used for in-cylinder diesel direct injection was extended to the axis of the tube. The diesel sprays could impinge onto the hot inner surface of the tube and atomize quickly if the temperature of the tube was high enough. Then the fuel-air mixture would be sucked into the cylinder, and HCCI combustion could be fulfilled. The vaporization ratio of the impinged diesel sprays was estimated by fuel consumption, intake air flux and excess air coefficient (λ) calculated from the volumetric concentration of O2, CO2 and CO emissions. The NOx emission was always very low.

Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Short Circuits and Restrikes of Spark Channels

Ignition performance is critical for the implementation of diluted combustion for spark-ignition engines. The short circuit and restrike phenomena can influence the initial ignition volume and discharge duration which are important for the stable ignition processes. In this study, the short circuits and restrikes of spark channels are studied with various flow velocities, spark plug gaps and discharge energies. The development of the spark channels is captured by using the direct imaging technique with a CMOS camera equipped with an image intensifier. A multi-coil ignition system is designed to enable flexible control of discharge energies. The results show that the spark plug gap size is a critical parameter to suppress the phenomena of short circuits and restrikes. With the enlargement of spark plug gap, the maximum and average lengths of the spark channel effectively increase.

A Study of Energy Enhanced Multi-Spark Discharge Ignition in a Constant-Volume Combustion Chamber

Multi-spark discharge (MSD) ignition is widely used in high-speed internal combustion engines such as racing cars, motorcycles and outboard motors in attempts to achieve multiple sparks during each ignition. In contrast to transistor coil ignition (TCI) system, MSD system can be greatly shortened the charging time in a very short time. However, when the engine speed becomes higher, the ignition will be faster, electrical energy stored in the ignition system will certainly become less, especially for MSD system. Once the energy released into the spark plug gap can’t be guaranteed sufficiently, ignition will become more difficult, and it will get worse in some harsh environment such as strong turbulence or lean fuel conditions. With these circumstances, the risks of misfire and partial combustion will increase, which can deteriorate the power outputs and exhaust emissions of internal combustion engine.

Combustion and Emissions Improved by Using Flash Boiling Sprays and High-Energy Ignition Technologies in an Ethanol-Gasoline Optical Engine

To alleviate the shortage of petroleum resources and the air pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels, the development of renewable fuels has attracted widespread attention. Among the various renewable fuels, ethanol can be produced from biomass and does not require much modification when applied to practical engines, so it has been widely used. However, ethanol fuel has a higher heat of vaporization than gasoline, it is difficult to evaporate and atomize under cold start conditions. Besides, the catalyst has not reached the conversion temperature at this time, resulting in lower conversion efficiency. These factors all lead to higher pollutant emission levels in ethanol-gasoline blends. To solve the above problems, this research used visualization techniques to compare the effects of flash boiling and high-energy ignition technologies on the in-cylinder combustion process and pollutant emission of ethanol-gasoline blends fuel.

One Better Model of Vehicle Turbocharged Diesel Engine than VNT Turbo

In the internal combustion engine, about 25%-40% of the energy released by burned fuel is taken away by the exhaust gas. The part of the usable energy in the exhaust can be used in the turbocharged engine. So, at present, turbocharged diesel engine hasn't made full use of exhaust gas energy. The authors propose a model of the 4-stroke turbocharged diesel engine of split exhausting system. Adding a rapidly on-and-off exhaust control valve between exhaust passage and manifold in the 4-stroke turbocharged diesel engine can improve the utilization rate of the usable energy in the exhaust. By utilizing the mean effective pressure (MEP), this paper is to calculate the maximum usable energy, the energy provided by exhaust and the energy required by intake. The results gets that the new type of exhausting system can help engine to increase usage rate of the exhaust gas energy to around 20% at the rated condition compared to the existing vehicle diesel engines with VNT.

Analysis of Thermal Efficiency Improvement of a Highly Boosted, High Compression Ratio, Direct-Injection Gasoline Engine with LIVC and EIVC at Partial and Full Loads

The improvement mechanism of fuel consumption at partial and full loads of a boosted direction-injection gasoline engine with the elevated geometrical compression ratio and Miller cycle by either early or late intake valve closing (EIVC or LIVC) are analyzed based on the first law of thermodynamics and one dimensional engine simulation. An increase in geometric compression ratio increases the theoretical thermal efficiency for all the operating loads, but deteriorates the fuel economy at full loads, owing primarily to the full-load knock limit. Use of Miller cycle improves the fuel economy for both the partial and full load operations by reducing the pumping loss and optimizing the combustion phasing, respectively. A comparison between EIVC and LIVC on the influencing factors on the thermal efficiency at the partial load shows that EIVC leads to higher mechanical efficiency and less heat transfer loss than LIVC, and hence its efficiency improvement is superior over LIVC.

Suitability Study of n-Butanol for Enabling PCCI and HCCI and RCCI Combustion on a High Compression-ratio Diesel Engine

This work investigates the suitability of n-butanol for enabling PCCI, HCCI, and RCCI combustion modes to achieve clean and efficient combustion on a high compression ratio (18.2:1) diesel engine. Systematic engine tests are conducted at low and medium engine loads (6∼8 bar IMEP) and at a medium engine speed of 1500 rpm. Test results indicate that n-butanol is more suitable than diesel to enable PCCI and HCCI combustion with the same engine hardware. However, the combustion phasing control for n-butanol is demanding due to the high combustion sensitivity to variations in engine operating conditions where engine safety concerns (e.g. excessive pressure rise rates) potentially arise. While EGR is the primary measure to control the combustion phasing of n-butanol HCCI, the timing control of n-butanol direct injection in PCCI provides an additional leverage to properly phase the n-butanol combustion.

Exploring the Effects of the Key Multi-Injection Parameters on Combustion and Emissions in Intelligent Charge Compression Ignition (ICCI) Mode

Developing advanced combustion mode has been the active area for high efficiency and ultra-low emissions of the next-generation internal combustion engines. In this paper, a series of experiments were conducted in a modified single-cylinder compression ignition engine for operating a brand-new combustion mode denoted as intelligent charge compression ignition (ICCI) mode. By using two common-rail systems, commercial gasoline and diesel were alternately directly injected into the cylinder through multi-injection strategies in the injection timing range of 50~320 °CA BTDC. Thus, the in-cylinder stratified condition can be flexibly and accurately adjusted in this unique combustion mode. The key injection parameters, such as gasoline injection timing and diesel split ratio, were investigated to explore their effects on engine combustion, emissions, and fuel consumption.

A Novel Approach to Constructing Reactivity-Based Simplified Combustion Model for Dual Fuel Engine

To achieve higher efficiencies and lower emissions, dual-fuel strategies have arisen as advanced engine technologies. In order to fully utilize engine fuels, understanding the combustion chemistry is urgently required. However, due to computation limitations, detailed kinetic models cannot be used in numerical engine simulations. As an alternative, approaches for developing reduced reaction mechanisms have been proposed. Nevertheless, existing simplified methods neglecting the real engine combustion processes, which is the ultimate goal of reduced mechanism. In this study, we propose a novel simplified approach based on fuel reactivity. The high-reactivity fuel undergoes pyrolysis first, followed by the pyrolysis and oxidation of the low-reactivity fuel. Therefore, the simplified mechanism consists of highly lumped reactions of high-reactivity fuel, radical reactions of low-reactivity fuel and C0-C2 core mechanisms.
