An Intelligent Alternator Control Mechanism for Energy Recuperation and Fuel Efficiency Improvement

With the current state of ever rising fuel prices and unavailability of affordable alternate technologies, significant research and development efforts have been invested in recent times towards improving fuel efficiency of vehicles powered with conventional internal combustion engines. To achieve this, a varied approach has been adopted by researchers to cover the entire energy chain including fuel quality, combustion quality, power generation efficiency, down-sizing, power consumption efficiency, etc. Apart from energy generation, distribution and consumption, another domain that has been subjected to significant scrutiny is energy recuperation or recovery. A moving vehicle and a running engine provide a number of opportunities for useful back-recovery and storage of energy. The most significant sources for recuperation are the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle or running engine and to a lesser extent the thermal energy from medium such as exhaust gas.

A Case Study of Reaction Time Reduction of Vehicle Brake System

There has to be a good co-relation/ relationship between the pedal effort applied, pedal travel, deceleration level achieved and stopping distance for “good brake feel”. Brake feel also depend upon the time lag between the force applied on brake pedal and the response of braking system. Hence “brake feel” can be improved by reducing the response time of the brake system. Many vehicles are having “poor brake feel” complaints, pertaining to the above mentioned reasons. This paper relates to an improved brake system for automobile in which reduction in reaction time was done by artificially increasing differential pressure head across vacuum booster diaphragm. Brake booster is given an input of compressed air to the valve body during actuation, thereby increasing the differential pressure across the diaphragm. The compressed air is bled from turbocharger-intercooler of the vehicle which is stored in a reservoir, with one way valve, while cruising.

Vehicle Level Approach for Optimization of On-Board Diagnostic Strategies for Fault Management

As the vehicle functions are getting distributed over multiple ECUs in order to realize various complex control functions, the need for sophisticated on-board diagnostic strategies are increasing in automotive domain, leading to a significant amount of hardware and software implementations for fault management inside various ECUs in the vehicle. This paper proposes optimized vehicle level approach for fault management strategies, wherein a centralized intelligent Gateway Module is proposed in the vehicle network architecture, which will be responsible for fault management of the complete vehicle in a chronological sequence. This Gateway Module will thereby have the possibility to group a cluster of faults raised by different ECUs and correlate them meaningfully to guide the operator towards root cause of the fault.

Design of a Cabin Tilting System of heavy trucks, a multi degree of freedom mechanism, is a challenge. Factors like adequate tilting angle, cabin styling, packaging, non interference of tilting system with ride comfort, forces in the system, specifications of the hydraulic system, are all very important for designing the system. Numerous considerations make the design process highly iterative hence longer design time. This paper primarily focuses on Kinematics and Dynamic analysis of the system in ADAMS and validation of system with real time testing results. Intention of this work is to make a parametric ADAMS model and link it to a Knowledge Based Engineering application to facilitate designer to quickly carry out design iterations for reducing development time. The Knowledge Based Engineering software is made using object oriented language called ‘Object Definition Language’ which has been developed using C and C++ software languages.

Development & Calibration of a Rain-Light Sensor and Controller for Indian Market

Modern vehicles complexity is increasing to meet the demands of user. Automatic wiper and headlamp activation system using rain light sensor, (RLS) is one of the popular customer requirement. RLS is a combination of an infrared rain sensor and an optical light sensor. The RLS and controller operate the front wiper once it detects rain droplets on the windscreen. It switches on the headlamps automatically when while vehicles enter in to the tunnel. During integration of a rain light sensor on a vehicle the following should be considered: customer usage pattern, environmental factors, light intensity, raining pattern and vehicle architecture limitations. This paper illustrates the methodology used calibrated a pre-developed rain light sensor for specific markets like India.

EU directive 2005/64/EC on type approval of motor vehicles with respect to their Reusability, Recyclability and Recoverability ( RRR ) requires vehicle manufacturers to put in place the necessary arrangements and procedures for Parts, Materials and Weight (PMW ) data collection from full chain of supply. This is required to perform the calculations of recyclability rate and recoverability rate in line with ISO 22628. Commonly practiced data collection methodologies included spreadsheet and use of internationally available IT support system for collection of material data. Data complexity and prohibitive cost for using Internationally available IT Support systems like IMDS (International Material Data System) has led to the in-house development of IT enabled Solution customizing Siemens PLM software product (Team centre Enterprise) and SAP (SRM suite).

A Novel and Low Cost Strategy for Distance Logging in EEPROM for OBD-I Compliance

On Board Diagnostics norms enforced by regulatory authorities of many countries require logging of distance traveled by the vehicle with MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) illuminated. This log needs to be maintained in non-volatile ECU memory. Conventional techniques maintain the log in a volatile memory during vehicle run-time and transfer the same to non-volatile memory when ignition is turned off. This requires use of a “power-hold” relay to keep an ECU power alive while the logged data in volatile memory is being transferred to non-volatile memory when ignition is switched-off. A novel strategy described in this paper avoids interface with power-hold relay, thereby reducing the system complexity. The design philosophy described makes use of an EEPROM to maintain the distance log. An innovative algorithm is employed to ensure that endurance specifications are not violated during the vehicle life-time.

Feed Forward and Integral Control of an EGR Valve

Automotive embedded control systems need to implement real-time closed-loop control strategies for controlling valves, motors, etc. The implementation needs to focus on use of low cost hardware and efficient software with minimal foot-print so as to adequately meet the application requirement. This paper highlights the low cost hardware and software design concepts by way of a case study related to control of progressive EGR valve. The control strategy is based on "map-driven set-points" where percentage opening of the valve is stored in the form of 16x16 matrices. The set-points are accessed based on instantaneous throttle and engine rpm values which form the row and column indices of the map. The closed loop control algorithm eliminates the need for multiplication by implementing "feed-forward with integral control algorithm." A feed-forward map specifies the most likely PWM duty cycle to be applied to the valve for a given set-point.

Hill Start Assistance Developed for Buses Equipped with AMT

The AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) has attracted increasing interest of automotive researches, because it has some advantages of both MT (Manual Transmission) and AT (Automatic Transmission), such as low cost, high efficiency, easy to use and good comfort. The hill-start assistance is an important feature of AMT. The vehicle will move backward, start with jerk, or cause engine stalling if failed on the slope road. For manual transmission, hill-start depends on the driver's skills to coordinate with the brake, clutch and throttle pedal to achieve a smooth start. However, with the AMT, clutch pedal is removed and therefore, driver can’t perceive the clutch position, making it difficult to hill-start with AMT without hill-start control strategy. This paper discussed about the hill start control strategy and its functioning.

Design Methods to Optimize the Performance of Controller Area Networks

This literature is in the field of communication networks where different Electronic Control Units (ECUs) communicate with each other over Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol. Typically these types of CAN networks are widely used in automotive vehicles, plant automations, etc. This proposed method is applicable in all such applications where controller area network is used as backbone electrical architecture. This literature proposes a new method of CAN signal packing into CAN frames so that network bus-load is minimized so that more number of CAN signals can be packed and more number of ECUs can be accommodated within a CAN network. The proposed method also ensures that the age of each CAN signal is minimized and all CAN signals reach the intended receiving ECUs within their maximum allowed age. Typically network designers are forced to design and develop multiple sub-networks and network gateways to get rid of network bus-load.

Development of Accelerated Life Test Schedule for Rig Testing of Live Axles Based on Road Load Data and Its Correlation with Field

Drive components of live axle undergoes different loading conditions during field usage depending upon terrain conditions, vehicle loading and traffic conditions etc. During vehicle running, drive components of axle experiences variable torque levels, which results in the fatigue damage of the components. Testing of these drive components of axle on test rig for endurance life is an imperative part of axle development, owing to limitations of vehicle testing because of time and cost involved. Similarly, correlating field failures with rig testing is equally critical. In such situation, if a test cycle is derived correlating the field usage, rig testing can be effectively used for accelerated life testing and reliability prediction of these components. An approach is presented in the paper wherein test cycle is derived based on the data collected on vehicle in the field under service road and loading conditions.

Low Cost Vehicle Validation Strategy for Early Detection and Correction of Real-Life Performance Deficiencies of Various Subsystems

Increasing number of ECU's (Electronic Control Units) being used in modern vehicles have given rise to HIL (hardware in the loop) testing, and model based design approach to design/test ECU's even before the proto-type vehicle is ready. However, it is not uncommon to discover surprising system design lapses during actual vehicle operation reported after vehicle launch. Major cause behind such lapses are found to be the gap between actual field performance/robustness of various vehicle sub-systems interfaced with ECU's and those modeled as ideal cases during HIL testing in the lab. This creates a need to evolve effective vehicle-level validation strategies to expose such performance deficiencies of real life sub-systems provided by the vendors. This paper describes a new approach to validate ECU in real time.

Optimized Methodology for Evaluation of Complex Network Architectures

This paper is in the field of communication networks where different Electronic Control Units (ECUs) communicate with each other using various communication protocols such as Controller Area Network (CAN), Local Interconnect Network (LIN), FlexRay, etc. Typically such types of communication networks are widely used in automobile domain. This paper proposes a holistic approach for evaluation and finalization of complex network architecture for a vehicle. As part of this proposed method, at first one reference-network architecture is constructed for the highest end variant of the vehicle considering all possible ECUs for this vehicle. Then other possible logical variations in network architecture are constructed, which can also technically represent the vehicle's network architecture. Then a set of criteria measures are considered to evaluate how good (or bad) each variation of network architecture is with respect to the reference-network architecture.

A Novel Approach for Diagnostics, End of Line and System Performance Checks for Micro Hybrid Battery Management Systems

Micro Hybrid Systems are a premier approach for improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, by improving the efficiency of electrical energy generation, storage, distribution and consumption, yet with lower costs associated with development and implementation. However, significant efforts are required while implementing micro hybrid systems, arising out of components like Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS). IBS provides battery measurements and battery status, and in addition mission critical diagnostic data on a communication line to micro hybrid controller. However, this set of data from IBS is not available instantly after its initialization, as it enters into a lengthy learning phase, where it learns the battery parameters, before it gives the required data on the communication line. This learning period spans from 3 to 8 hours, until the IBS is fully functional and is capable of supporting the system functionalities.

Derivation of Test Schedule for Clutch Using Road Load Data Analysis and Energy Dissipation as Basis

During every clutch engagement energy is dissipated in clutch assembly because of relative slippage of clutch disc w.r.t. flywheel and pressure plate. Energy dissipated in clutch is governed by many design parameters like driveline configuration of the vehicle vis-a-vis vehicle mass, and operational parameters like road conditions, traffic conditions. Clutch burning failure, which is the major failure mode of clutch assembly, is governed by energy dissipation phenomenon during clutch engagement. Clutch undergoes different duty cycles during usage in city traffic, highways or hilly regions during its lifetime. A test schedule was derived using energy dissipated during every clutch engagement event as a base and using road load data collected on the vehicle. Road load data was collected in different road mix conditions comprised of city traffic, highway, hilly region, rough road for few hundred kilometers.

Authors were challenged with a task of developing a full vehicle simulation model, with a target to simulate the electrical system performance and perform digital tests like Battery Charge Balance, in addition to the fuel efficiency estimation. A vehicle is a complicated problem or domain to model, due to the complexities of subsystems. Even more difficult task is to have a control algorithm which controls the vehicle model with the required control signals to follow the test specification. Particularly, simulating the control of a vehicle with a manual transmission is complicated due to many associated control signals (Throttle, Brake and Clutch) and interruptions like gear changes. In this paper, the development of a full vehicle model aimed at the assessment of electrical system performance of the vehicle is discussed in brief.

In a Mild hybrid electric vehicle, a battery serves as a continuous source of energy but is inefficient in supplying peak power demands required during torque assists for short duration. Moreover, the random charging and discharging that result due to varying drive cycle of the vehicle affects the life of the battery. In this paper, an Ultra-capacitor based hybrid energy storage system (HESS) has been developed for mild hybrid vehicle which aims at utilizing the advantages of ultracapacitors by combining them with lead-acid batteries, to improve the overall performance of the battery, and to increase their useful life. Active current-sharing is achieved by interfacing ultracapacitor to the battery through a bi-directional boost dc-dc converter.

An Effort to Build Mathematical Model using Time Series Analysis to Aid Steering Auto-Correction in Heavy Commercial Vehicle during High Speed Braking

Steering pull during high speed braking of heavy commercial vehicles possesses a potential danger to the occupants. Even with negligible wheel-to-wheel brake torque variation, steering pull during the high speed braking has been observed. If the steering pull (i.e. steering rotation) is forcibly held at zero degree during high speed braking, the phenomena called axle twist, wheel turn and shock absorber deflection arise. In this work the data have been collected on the mentioned measures with an intention to develop a mathematical model which uses real time data, coming from feedback mechanism to predict the values of the measures in coming moments in order to aid steering system to ‘auto-correct’. Driven by the intention, ‘Time Series Analysis’, a well-known statistical methodology, has been explored to see how suitable it is in building the kind of model.

Pneumatic brake system is widely used in heavy truck, medium and heavy buses for its great superiority and braking performance over other brake systems. Pneumatic brake system consists of various valves such as Dual Brake Valve (DBV), Quick release Valve (QRV), Relay Valve (RV), Brake chambers. Dynamics of each valve is playing a crucial role in overall dynamic performance of the braking system. However, it is very difficult to find the contribution of each valve and pipe diameters in overall braking performance. Hence, it is very difficult to arrive a best combination for targeted braking performance as it is not possible to evaluate all combination on the actual vehicle. Hence, it is very important to have a mathematical model to optimize and evaluate the overall braking performance in early design phase. The present study is focusing on the mathematical model of a pneumatic brake circuit.

This paper focuses on factors that enhance energy efficiency of air conditioning system on mid-sized, standard and premium buses with engine power from 125 to 280 HP. It covers aspects like light weighting of roof air conditioning system, usage of optimized ducting system with minimal resistance to blowers, deployment of rotary scroll compressor with fast idle control in place of reciprocating piston compressor. The scope of this paper covers AC compressors driven by main engine of vehicle/ bus, study related to auxiliary/donkey engine driven AC compressor is not considered. Context- In order to enhance fuel efficiency in buses an energy efficient air conditioning system should be deployed. This will lead to reduced parasitic load on the engine and translate into direct fuel saving.
