A Lightweight Spatio-Temporally Partitioned Multicore Architecture for Concurrent Execution of Safety Critical Workloads

Modern aircraft systems employ numerous processors to achieve system functionality. In particular, engine controls and power distribution subsystems rely heavily on software to provide safety-critical functionality, and are expected to move toward multicore architectures. The computing hardware-layer of avionic systems must be able to execute many concurrent workloads under tight deterministic execution guarantees to meet the safety standards. Single-chip multicores are attractive for safety-critical embedded systems due to their lightweight form factor. However, multicores aggressively share hardware resources, leading to interference that in turn creates non-deterministic execution for multiple concurrent workloads. We propose an approach to remove on-chip interference via a set of methods to spatio-temporally partition shared multicore resources.

Vehicle Design and Implementation of a Series-Parallel Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

The Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team (HEVT) of Virginia Tech has achieved the Year 2 goal of producing a 65% functional mule vehicle suitable for testing and refinement, while maintaining the series-parallel plug-in hybrid architecture developed during Year 1. Even so, further design and expert consultations necessitated an extensive redesign of the rear powertrain and front auxiliary systems packaging. The revised rear powertrain consists of the planned Rear Traction Motor (RTM), coupled to a single-speed transmission. New information, such as the dimensions of the high voltage (HV) air conditioning compressor and the P2 motor inverter, required the repackaging of the hybrid components in the engine bay. The P2 motor/generator was incorporated into the vehicle after spreading the engine and transmission to allow for the required space.

5G Network Connectivity Automated Test and Verification for Autonomous Vehicles Using UAVs

The significance and the number of vehicle safety features enabled via connectivity continue to increase. OnStar, with its automatic airbag notification, was one of the first vehicle safety features that demonstrate the enhanced safety benefits of connectivity. Vehicle connectivity benefits have grown to include remote software updates, data analytics to aid with preventative maintenance and even to theft prevention and recovery. All of these services require available and reliable connectivity. However, except for the airbag notification, none have strict latency requirements. For example, software updates can generally be postponed till reliable connectivity is available. Data required for prognostic use cases can be stored and transmitted at a later time. A new set of use cases are emerging that do demand continuous, reliable and low latency connectivity. For example, remote control of autonomous vehicles may be required in unique situations.

Key Outcomes of Year One of EcoCAR 2: Plugging in to the Future

EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future (EcoCAR) is North America's premier collegiate automotive engineering competition, challenging students with systems-level advanced powertrain design and integration. The three-year Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) series is organized by Argonne National Laboratory, headline sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and General Motors (GM), and sponsored by more than 28 industry and government leaders. Fifteen university teams from across North America are challenged to reduce the environmental impact of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu by redesigning the vehicle powertrain without compromising performance, safety, or consumer acceptability. During the three-year program, EcoCAR teams follow a real-world Vehicle Development Process (VDP) modeled after GM's own VDP. The VDP serves as a roadmap for the engineering process of designing, building and refining advanced technology vehicles.

Design and Implementation of Aircraft System Health Management (ASHM) Utilizing Existing Data Feeds

The Aircraft System Health Management (ASHM) tool is a UTC developed web application that provides access to Aircraft Condition Monitoring Function (ACMF) reports and Flight Deck Effects (FDE) records for Boeing 787®, A320®, and A380® aircraft. The tool was built with a flexible architecture to field a range of off-board diagnostics and prognostics modules designed to transform an abundance of data into actionable and timely knowledge about fleet health. This paper describes the system architecture and implementation with a focus on “lessons learned” in applying diagnostic and prognostics algorithms to available fleet data. Key topics include ensuring analytic robustness, design for cross-enterprise collaboration and defining a workable approach to testing, validating and deploying prognostics and diagnostics models with various degrees of complexity. A case study is provided related to fluid leak detection within an environmental control subsystem.

Vehicle Refinement and Testing of a Series-Parallel Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

The Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team (HEVT) of Virginia Tech is ready to compete in the Year 3 Final Competition for EcoCAR 2: Plugging into the Future. The team is confident in the reliability of their vehicle, and expects to finish among the top schools at Final Competition. During Year 3, the team refined the vehicle while following the EcoCAR 2 Vehicle Development Process (VDP). Many refinements came about in Year 3 such as the implementation of a new rear subframe, the safety analysis of the high voltage (HV) bus, and the integration of Charge Sustaining (CS) control code. HEVT's vehicle architecture is an E85 Series-Parallel Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), which has many strengths and weaknesses. The primary strength is the pure EV mode and Series mode, which extend the range of the vehicle and reduce Petroleum Energy Usage (PEU) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Evaluation of Key Certification Aspects of Multi Core Platforms for Safety Critical Applications in Avionics Industry

Multi core platforms offer high performance at low power and have been deemed as future of size, weight and power constrained applications like avionics safety critical applications. Multi core platforms are widely used in non-real time systems where the average case performance is desired like in consumer electronics, telecom domains. Despite these advantages, multi core platforms (hardware and software) pose significant certification challenges for safety critical applications and hence there has been limited usage in avionics and other safety critical applications. Many multicore platform solutions which can be certified to DO-254 & DO 178B Level A are commercially available. There is a need to evaluate these platforms w.r.t certification requirements before deploying them in the safety critical systems thereby reducing the program risks. This paper discusses the advantages of multi core platforms in terms of performance, power consumption and weight/size.
