A Unique Application of Gasoline Particulate Filter Pressure Sensing Diagnostics

Abstract Gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) are important aftertreatment components that enable gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines to meet European Union (EU) 6 and China 6 particulate number emissions regulations for nonvolatile particles greater than 23 nm in diameter. GPFs are rapidly becoming an integral part of the modern GDI aftertreatment system. The Active Exhaust Tuning (EXTUN) Valve is a butterfly valve placed in the tailpipe of an exhaust system that can be electronically positioned to control exhaust noise levels (decibels) under various vehicle operating conditions. This device is positioned downstream of the GPF, and variations in the tuning valve position can impact exhaust backpressures, making it difficult to monitor soot/ash accumulation or detect damage/removal of the GPF substrate. The purpose of this work is to present a unique example of subsystem control and diagnostic architecture for an exhaust system combining GPF and EXTUN.

3D Scene Reconstruction with Sparse LiDAR Data and Monocular Image in Single Frame

Abstract Real-time reconstruction of 3D environment attributed with semantic information is significant for a variety of applications, such as obstacle detection, traffic scene comprehension and autonomous navigation. The current approaches to achieve it are mainly using stereo vision, Structure from Motion (SfM) or mobile LiDAR sensors. Each of these approaches has its own limitation, stereo vision has high computational cost, SfM needs accurate calibration between a sequences of images, and the onboard LiDAR sensor can only provide sparse points without color information. This paper describes a novel method for traffic scene semantic segmentation by combining sparse LiDAR point cloud (e.g. from Velodyne scans), with monocular color image. The key novelty of the method is the semantic coupling of stereoscopic point cloud with color lattice from camera image labelled through a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).

Efficient Lane Detection Using Deep Lane Feature Extraction Method

Abstract In this paper, an efficient lane detection using deep feature extraction method is proposed to achieve real-time lane detection in diverse road environment. The method contains three main stages: 1) pre-processing, 2) deep lane feature extraction and 3) lane fitting. In pre-processing stage, the inverse perspective mapping (IPM) is used to obtain a bird's eye view of the road image, and then an edge image is generated using the canny operator. In deep lane feature extraction stage, an advanced lane extraction method is proposed. Firstly, line segment detector (LSD) is applied to achieve the fast line segment detection in the IPM image. After that, a proposed adaptive lane clustering algorithm is employed to gather the adjacent line segments generated by the LSD method. Finally, a proposed local gray value maximum cascaded spatial correlation filter (GMSF) algorithm is used to extract the target lane lines among the multiple lines.

Torque and Pressure CFD Correlation of a Torque Converter

Abstract A torque converter was instrumented with 29 pressure transducers inside five cavities under study (impeller, turbine, stator, clutch cavity between the pressure plate and the turbine shell). A computer model was created to establish correlation with measured torque and pressure. Torque errors between test and simulation were within 5% and K-Factor and torque ratio errors within 2%. Turbulence intensity on the computer model was used to simulate test conditions representing transmission low and high line pressure settings. When turbulence intensity was set to 5%, pressure simulation root mean square errors were within 11%-15% for the high line pressure setting and up to 34% for low line pressure setting. When turbulence intensity was increased to 50% for the low line pressure settings, a 6% reduced root mean square error in the pressure simulations was seen.

Passive Flow Control on a Ground-Effect Diffuser Using an Inverted Wing

Abstract In this experimental and computational study a novel application of aerodynamic principles in altering the pressure recovery behavior of an automotive-type ground-effect diffuser was investigated as a means of enhancing downforce. The proposed way of augmenting diffuser downforce production is to induce in its pressure recovery action a second pressure drop and an accompanying pressure rise region close to the diffuser exit. To investigate this concept with a diffuser-equipped bluff body, an inverted wing was situated within the diffuser flow channel, close to the diffuser exit. The wing’s suction surface acts as a passive flow control device by increasing streamwise flow velocity and reducing static pressure near the diffuser exit. Therefore, a second-stage pressure recovery develops along the diffuser’s overall pressure recovery curve as the flow travels from the diffuser’s low pressure, high velocity inlet to its high pressure, low velocity exit.

Tire Side Force Characteristics with the Coupling Effect of Vertical Load and Inflation Pressure

Abstract The tire vertical load and inflation pressure have great influence on tire steady- and non-steady-state characteristics and, consequently, on the vehicle handling and stability. The objective of this article is to reveal the coupling effect of tire vertical load and inflation pressure on tire characteristics and then introduce an improved UniTire side force model including such coupling effect through experimental and theoretical analysis. First, the influence of the tire vertical load and inflation pressure on the tire characteristics is presented through experimental analysis. Second, the theoretical tire cornering stiffness and lateral relaxation length model are introduced to study the underlying mechanism of the coupling effect. Then, an improved UniTire side force model including the coupling effect of tire vertical load and inflation pressure is derived. Finally, the proposed improved UniTire side force model is validated through tire steady-state and transient data.

An Optical-Based Technique to Obtain Vibration Characteristics of Rotating Tires

Abstract The dynamic characteristics of tires are critical in the overall vibrations of vehicles because the tire-road interface is the only medium of energy transfer between the vehicle and the road surface. Obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the tire helps in improving the comfort of the passengers. The vibrational characteristics of structures are usually obtained by performing conventional impact hammer modal testing, in which the structure is excited with an impact hammer and the response of the structure under excitation is captured using accelerometers. However, this approach only provides the response of the structure at a few discrete locations, and it is challenging to use this procedure for rotating structures. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) helps in overcoming these challenges by providing the full-field response of the structure.

Effects of Reflux Temperature and Molarity of Acidic Solution on Chemical Functionalization of Helical Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract The use of nanomaterials and nanostructures have been revolutionizing the advancements of science and technology in various engineering and medical fields. As an example, Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have been extensively used for the improvement of mechanical, thermal, electrical, magnetic, and deteriorative properties of traditional composite materials for applications in high-performance structures. The exceptional materials properties of CNTs (i.e., mechanical, magnetic, thermal, and electrical) have introduced them as promising candidates for reinforcement of traditional composites. Most structural configurations of CNTs provide superior material properties; however, their geometrical shapes can deliver different features and characteristics. As one of the unique geometrical configurations, helical CNTs have a great potential for improvement of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of polymeric resin composites.

Multicriteria Optimization, Sensitivity Analysis, and Prediction of Bond Characteristics of Vacuum Diffusion Bonded Aero Engine Ti6Al4V Alloy Joints

Abstract Joining titanium (Ti) alloys with conventional processes is difficult due to their complex structural properties and ability of phase transformation. Concerning all the difficulties, diffusion bonding is considered as an appropriate process for joining Ti alloys. Ti6Al4V, which is an α+β alloy widely used for aero engine component manufacturing, is diffusion bonded in this investigation. The diffusion bonding process parameters such as bonding temperature, bonding pressure, and holding time were optimized to achieve desired bonding characteristics such as shear strength, bonding strength, bonding ratio, and thickness ratio using response surface methodology (RSM). Empirical relationships were developed for the prediction of the bond characteristics, and sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the increment and decrement tendency of the shear strength with respect to the bonding parameters.

Mathematical Model of Heat-Controlled Accumulator (HCA) for Microgravity Conditions

Abstract It is reasonable to use a two-phase heat transfer loop (TPL) in a thermal control system (TCS) of spacecraft with large heat dissipation. One of the key elements of TPL is a heat-controlled accumulator (HCA). The HCA represents a volume which is filled with vapor and liquid of a single working fluid without bellows. The pressure in a HCA is controlled by the heater. The heat and mass transfer processes in the HCA can proceed with a significant nonequilibrium. This has implications on the regulation of TPL. This article presents a mathematical model of nonequilibrium heat and mass transfer processes in an HCA for microgravity conditions. The model uses the equations of mass and energy conservation separately for the vapor and liquid phases. Interfacial heat and mass transfer is also taken into account. It proposes to use the convective component k for the level of nonequilibrium evaluation.

Laser-Assisted Filler-Based Joining for Battery Assembly in Aviation

Abstract A key problem of the construction of fully electric aircraft is the limited energy density of battery packs. It is generally accepted that this can only be overcome via new, denser battery chemistry together with a further increase in the efficiency of power utilization. One appealing approach for achieving the latter is using laser-assisted filler-based joining technologies, which offers unprecedented flexibility for achieving battery cell connections with the least possible electrical loss. This contribution presents our results on the effect of various experimental and process parameters on the electrical and mechanical properties of the laser-formed bond.

Effect of Tool Tilt Angles on Mechanical and Microstructural Properties of Friction Stir Welding of Dissimilar Dual-Phase 600 Steel and AA6082-T6 Aluminum Alloy

Abstract The present study aims to join the dissimilar materials such as Dual-Phase (DP) 600 Steel and AA6082-T6 Aluminum (Al) alloy via the friction stir welding (FSW) process with a reduced intermetallic compound (IMC) layer. The five different tool tilt angles of 0°, 0.5°, 1°, 1.5°, and 2° were selected to fabricate the joints. The weld characteristics such as tensile strength, hardness, macrostructure, and microstructure were analyzed. The weld interface was studied by employing an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The joint produced with a 0.5° tilt angle has achieved the highest ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 240 MPa. The IMCs were identified as Fe2Al8 and FeAl2 from the joint interface studies.

Process-Structure-Property Relationship in Dissimilar Al-High-Strength Steel Impact Spot Welds Created Using Vaporizing Foil Actuator Welding

Abstract Vaporizing foil actuator welding (VFAW) created nominally solid-state spot welds between high-strength DP980 steel and 6022 T4 aluminum. The effects of varying the impact velocity and angle between the Al flyer and target steel sheets on the structure and properties of the joints were evaluated using photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fractography, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The incident angle and velocity of the flyer plate were quantified using PDV, and their relations to the structure and properties of the joint were assessed with microscopy and strength testing. Impact velocity and average impact angle increase with the increasing standoff. Lower impact angles and higher impact velocities promoted interfacial failure due to increased melting, higher intermetallic thickness, and lower wave amplitude and wavelength.

The Effect of Current Mode on the Crack and Failure in the Resistance Spot Welding of the Advanced High-Strength DP590 Steel

Abstract The causes of failure due to cracking in the resistance spot welding of the advanced high-strength steels dual-phase 590 (DP590) were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, and the tensile-shear test. The results showed that by increasing the current amount, the formation of the melting zone occurred in the heat-affected zone, leading to the cracking in this area, reducing the tensile strength and decreasing the mechanical properties; the initiation and growth of cracking and failure in this region also happened. In the heat-affected zone, by increasing the current amount with the softening phenomenon, the recrystallized coarse grains also occurred, eventually resulting in the loss of mechanical properties. The results of the tensile-shear test also indicated that by increasing the current up to 12 kA, the strength was raised, but the ductility was reduced.

Improving Hole Expansion Ratio by Parameter Adjustment in Abrasive Water Jet Operations for DP800

Abstract The use of Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) cutting technology can improve the edge stretchability in sheet metal forming. The advances in technology have allowed significant increases in working speeds and pressures, reducing the AWJ operation cost. The main objective of this work was to determine the effect of selected AWJ cutting parameters on the Hole Expansion Ratio (HER) for a DP800 (Dual-Phase) Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) with s0 = 1.2 mm by using a fractional factorial design of experiments for the Hole Expansion Tests (HET). Additionally, the surface roughness and residual stresses were measured on the holes looking for a possible relation between them and the measured HER. A deep drawing quality steel DC06 with s0 = 1.0 mm was used for reference. The fracture occurrence was captured by high-speed cameras and by Acoustic Emissions (AE) in order to compare both methods.

Technological Stability of the Liner in a Separable Metal Composite Pressure Vessel

Abstract The article considers one of the possible mechanisms of loading the solidity of a cylindrical metal composite high-pressure vessel (MC HPV). This mechanism manifests itself as delamination of a thin-walled metal shell (liner) from a more rigid composite shell causing local buckling. A similar effect can be detected in the manufacturing process of MC HPV, when the composite shell is formed by winding with tension a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic tape on the liner. Pressure transfer from the composite shell to the liner is carried out by the method of temperature analogy, that is, by cooling the composite shell, thermally insulated from the liner. To solve the problem of externally confined liner local buckling an approach is proposed, which is based on three points: the introduction of local technological deviations inherent in actual structures, the determination of the general stress-strain state, and a real-time deforming.

Low- to High-Temperature Reaction Transition in a Small-Bore Optical Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI) Engine

Abstract This study shows the development of low-temperature and high-temperature reactions in a gasoline-fuelled compression ignition (GCI) engine realizing partially premixed combustion for high efficiency and low emissions. The focus is how the ignition occurs during the low- to high-temperature reaction transition and how it varies due to single- and double-injection strategies. In an optically accessible, single-cylinder small-bore diesel engine equipped with a common-rail fuel injection system, planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) imaging of formaldehyde (HCHO-PLIF), hydroxyl (OH-PLIF), and fuel (fuel-PLIF) has been performed. This was complemented with high-speed imaging of combustion luminosity and chemiluminescence imaging of cool flame and OH*.

Experiments and Large-Eddy Simulation for a Flowbench Configuration of the Darmstadt Optical Engine Geometry

Abstract The development and control of spark-ignition engines with increased efficiency and reduced engine-out emissions requires tools and methods capable of providing insight and eventually predicting Cycle-to-Cycle Variations (CCV). To this end, Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) can improve the understanding of stochastic in-cylinder phenomena during the engine design process. However, available LES methods are typically not able to reproduce the full extent of cyclic variability observed in experiments, and computational costs are higher compared to established simulation approaches. In this work, an engine flowbench configuration suitable for validation of LES methods and intake flow assessment is considered. To supplement an existing validation database, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and wall pressure measurements have been conducted in a reference optical engine geometry, which is available through the Darmstadt Engine Workshop.

Thermomechanical Fracture Failure Analysis of a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Cylinder Liner through Performance Analysis and Finite Element Modeling

Abstract Diesel engines include systems for cooling, lubrication, and fuel injection and contain a variety of components. A malfunction in any of the engine systems or the presence of any faulty element influences engine performance and deteriorates its components. This research is concerned with the untimely appearance of vital cracks in the liners of a turbocharged heavy-duty Diesel engine. To find the root causes for premature failure, rigorous examinations through visual observations, material characterization, and metallographic investigations are performed. These include Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), fracture mechanics analysis, and performance examination, which are also followed by Finite Element Moldings. To find the proper remedy to resolve the problem, drawing a precise and reliable picture of the engine’s operating conditions is required.

High-Resolution Circumferential Tire Tread Three-Dimensional Profiling Using Laser Section Technique and Photometric Stereo Technique

Abstract This article presents an approach for circumferential tire tread profiling using Laser Section (LS) technique and Photometric Stereo (PS) technique. The proposed approach uses a digital camera as the only data acquisition device, and one laser line generator and sixteen 5 mm white LEDs to provide different lighting conditions. LS technique uses the illumination of the laser line generator to measure the depth profile of one cross section of the tire surface, while PS technique utilizes the difference of the appearance of the tire surface under different lighting conditions to recover the geometry information of the tire tread with pixel resolution. The fusion of the two techniques results in a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) profiling of the tire tread. A system to apply the proposed approach was developed, with the necessary calibration steps explained, with a step motor for circumferential measurement.
