Optimizing Seat Belt and Airbag Designs for Rear Seat Occupant Protection in Frontal Crashes

Recent field data have shown that the occupant protection in vehicle rear seats failed to keep pace with advances in the front seats likely due to the lack of advanced safety technologies. The objective of this study was to optimize advanced restraint systems for protecting rear seat occupants with a range of body sizes under different frontal crash pulses. Three series of sled tests (baseline tests, advanced restraint trial tests, and final tests), MADYMO model validations against a subset of the sled tests, and design optimizations using the validated models were conducted to investigate rear seat occupant protection with 4 Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs) and 2 crash pulses.

A Comprehensive Review of Pedestrian Impact Reconstruction

This paper presents a review on pedestrian impact reconstruction methodology and offers a comprehensive review of the literature. Several types of analyses are discussed which can be used to reconstruct the accident scenario using the facts collected from the scene. Inclusive in this review is the utilization of skid mark analysis, debris analysis, injury/damage match-up, trajectory analysis, nighttime visibility, and alcohol effects. The pedestrian impact reconstruction methodology is illustrated with a real world case example to point out different observations which can provide insight into the pedestrian/vehicle collision reconstruction approach. The literature review provides a broad foundation of information on pedestrian impact reconstruction and can be used to supplement the techniques presented in this paper in areas related to pedestrian impact. Research advances in the area of pedestrian impact reconstruction are also discussed in this paper.

Vehicle Chassis, Body, and Seat Belt Buckle Acceleration Responses in the Vehicle Crash Environment

For over 30 years, field research and laboratory testing has consistently demonstrated that proper utilization of a seat belt dramatically reduces the risk of occupant death or serious injury in motor vehicle crashes. The injury prevention benefits of seat belts require that they remain fastened during collisions. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and SAE Recommended Practices set forth seat belt requirements to ensure proper buckle performance in accident conditions. Numerous analytical and laboratory studies have investigated buckle inertial release properties. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that current buckle designs have inertial release thresholds well above those believed to occur in real-world crashes. Nevertheless, inertial release theories persist. Various conceptual amplification theories, coupled with high magnitude accelerations measured on vehicle frame components are used as support for these release theories.

Postural Comfort Inside a Car: Development of an Innovative Model to Evaluate the Discomfort Level

How can car designers evaluate device’s position inside a car today? Today only subjective tests or “reachability” tests are made to assess if a generic user is able to reach devices, but it’s no longer enough. The aim of this study is to identify an instrument (index) that is able to provide a numerical information about the discomfort level connected with a posture that is kept inside a car to reach a device, by this instrument it should be possible not only judge a posture, but also compare different solutions and get rapid and accurate evaluations. In the state of the art there are many indexes developed to evaluate postural comfort (like RULA, REBA and LUBA [3, 4, 5]) but none of them has been realized to evaluate postures’ conditions that can be detected inside a car, so their evaluations cannot be acceptable.

Sources of UHC Emissions from a Light-Duty Diesel Engine Operating in a Partially Premixed Combustion Regime

Sources of unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions are examined for a highly dilute (10% oxygen concentration), moderately boosted (1.5 bar), low load (3.0 bar IMEP) operating condition in a single-cylinder, light-duty, optically accessible diesel engine undergoing partially-premixed low-temperature combustion (LTC). The evolution of the in-cylinder spatial distribution of UHC is observed throughout the combustion event through measurement of liquid fuel distributions via elastic light scattering, vapor and liquid fuel distributions via laser-induced fluorescence, and velocity fields via particle image velocimetry (PIV). The measurements are complemented by and contrasted with the predictions of multi-dimensional simulations employing a realistic, though reduced, chemical mechanism to describe the combustion process.

Exhaust Valve & Valve Seat Insert – Development for an Industrial LPG Application

Automotive engines are regularly utilized in the material handling market where LPG is often the primary fuel used. When compared to gasoline, the use of gaseous fuels (LPG and CNG) as well as alcohol based fuels, often result in significant increases in valve seat insert (VSI) and valve face wear. This phenomenon is widely recognized and the engine manufacturer is tasked to identify and incorporate appropriate valvetrain material and design features that can meet the ever increasing life expectations of the end-user. Alternate materials are often developed based on laboratory testing – testing that may not represent real world usage. The ultimate goal of the product engineer is to utilize accelerated lab test procedures that can be correlated to field life and field failure mechanisms, and then select appropriate materials/design features that meet the targeted life requirements.

Optimizing Precision and Accuracy of Quantitative PLIF of Acetone as a Tracer for Hydrogen Fuel

Quantitative planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of gaseous acetone as a fuel-tracer has been used in an optically accessible engine, fueled by direct hydrogen injection. The purpose of this article is to assess the accuracy and precision of the measurement and the associated data reduction procedures. A detailed description of the acetone seeding system is given as well. The key features of the experiment are a high-pressure bubbler saturating the hydrogen fuel with acetone vapor, direct injection into an optical engine, excitation of acetone fluorescence with an Nd:YAG laser at 266 nm, and detection of the resulting fluorescence by an unintensified camera. Key steps in the quantification of the single-shot imaging data are an in-situ calibration and a correction for the effect of local temperature on the fluorescence measurement.

The Poisoning and Desulfation Characteristics of Iron and Copper SCR Catalysts

A laboratory study was performed to assess the effects of SO2 poisoning on the NOx conversion of iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) SCR catalysts. Thermally aged samples of the catalysts were poisoned with SO2 under lean conditions. At various times during the poisonings, the samples were evaluated for NOx conversion with NO and NH3 using lean temperature ramps. The low temperature NOx conversions of both catalysts decreased by 10 to 20% after 1 to 4 hours of poisoning but were stable with continued exposure to the SO2. The poisoned Cu SCR catalyst could be desulfated repeatedly with 5 minutes of lean operation at 600°C. Initially, the poisoned Fe SCR catalyst required 5 minutes of lean operation at 750°C to recover its maximum NOx conversion.

Treasuri2/FE: A Tool for the FE Simulation of Sound Package Parts Fully Integrated in Nastran

Porous materials are extensively used in the construction of automotive sound package parts, due to their intrinsic capability of dissipating energy through different mechanisms. The issue related to the optimization of sound package parts (in terms of weight, cost, performances) has led to the need of models suitable for the analysis of porous materials' dynamical behavior and for this, along the years, several analytical and numerical models were proposed, all based on the system of equations initially developed by Biot. In particular, since about 10 years, FE implementations of Biot's system of equations have been available in commercial software programs but their application to sound package parts has been limited to a few isolated cases. This is due, partially at least, to the difficulty of smoothly integrating this type of analyses into the virtual NVH vehicle development.

Design of a Multi-Chamber Silencer for Turbocharger Noise

A multi-chamber silencer is designed by a computational approach to suppress the turbocharger whoosh noise downstream of a compressor in an engine intake system. Due to the significant levels and the broadband nature of the source spanning over 1.5 – 3.5 kHz, three Helmholtz resonators are implemented in series. Each resonator consists of a chamber and a number of slots, which can be modeled as a cavity and neck, respectively. Their target resonance frequencies are tuned using Boundary Element Method to achieve an effective noise reduction over the entire frequency range of interest. The predicted transmission loss of the silencer is then compared with the experimental results from a prototype in an impedance tube setup. In view of the presence of rapid grazing flow, these silencers may be susceptible to whistle-noise generation. Hence, the prototype is also examined on a flow bench at varying flow rates to assess such flow-acoustic coupling.

Aspects of NVH Integration in Hybrid Vehicles

NVH refinement is an important aspect of the powertrain development and vehicle integration process. The depletion of fossil-based fuels and increase in price of gasoline have prompted most vehicle manufacturers to embrace propulsion technologies with varying degrees and types of hybridization. Many different hybrid vehicle systems are either on the market, or under development, even up to all-electric vehicles. Each hybrid vehicle configuration brings unique NVH challenges that result from a variety of sources. This paper begins with an introductory discussion of hybrid propulsion technologies and associated unique vehicle NVH challenges inherent in the operation of such hybrid vehicles. Following this, the paper outlines a two-dimensional landscape of typical customer vehicle maneuvers mapped against hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) operational modes.

Numerical Simulations and Measurements of Mirror-Induced Wind Noise

The high cost and competitive nature of automotive product development necessitates the search for less expensive and faster methods of predicting vehicle performance. Continual improvements in High Performance Computing (HPC) and new computational schemes allow for the digital evaluation of vehicle comfort parameters including wind noise. Recently, the commercially available Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code PowerFlow, was evaluated for its accuracy in predicting wind noise generated by an external automotive tow mirror. This was accomplished by running simulations of several mirror configurations, choosing the quietest mirror based on the predicted performance, prototyping it, and finally, confirming the prediction with noise measurements taken in an aeroacoustic wind tunnel. Two testing methods, beam-forming and direct noise measurements, were employed to correlate the physical data with itself before correlating with simulation.

Determination of PEMS Measurement Allowances for Gaseous Emissions Regulated Under the Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine In-Use Testing Program Part 3 – Results and Validation

Beginning in 2007, heavy-duty engine manufacturers in the U.S. have been responsible for verifying the compliance on in-use vehicles with Not-to-Exceed (NTE) standards under the Heavy-Duty In-Use Testing Program (HDIUT). This in-use testing is conducted using Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS) which are installed on the vehicles to measure emissions during real-world operation. A key component of the HDIUT program is the generation of measurement allowances which account for the relative accuracy of PEMS as compared to more conventional, laboratory based measurement techniques. A program to determine these measurement allowances for gaseous emissions was jointly funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the California Air Resources Board (CARB), and various member companies of the Engine Manufacturer's Association (EMA).

Ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) has been used as a high octane blending component since the early 1990's. However the strong interest in renewable energy has led to a dramatic increase in its use. This has also resulted in a substantial number of technical studies being carried out around the world to assess its performance with respect to vehicle performance, distribution system compatibility, environmental impact and toxicology. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, up to date review of these data. Particular focus will be given to its positive impact on CO2 emissions.

Numerical Investigation of Non-Reacting and Reacting Diesel Sprays in Constant-Volume Vessels

A numerical investigation on a series of Diesel spray experiments in constant-volume vessels is proposed. Non reacting conditions were used to assess the spray models and to determine the grid size required to correctly predict the fuel-air mixture formation process. To this end, not only computed liquid and vapor penetrations were compared with experimental data, but also a detailed comparison between computed and experimental mixture fraction distributions was performed at different distances from the injector. Grid dependency was reduced by introducing an Adaptive Local Mesh Refinement technique (ALMR) with an arbitrary level of refinement. Once the capabilities of the current implemented spray models have been assessed, reacting conditions at different ambient densities and temperatures were considered. A Perfectly Stirred Reactor (PSR) combustion model, based on a direct integration of complex chemistry mechanisms over a homogenous cell, was adopted.

Realization of Ground Effects on Snowmobile Pass-by Noise Testing

Noise concerns regarding snowmobiles have increased in the recent past. Current standards, such as SAE J192 are used as guidelines for government agencies and manufacturers to regulate noise emissions for all manufactured snowmobiles. Unfortunately, the test standards available today produce results with variability that is much higher than desired. The most significant contributor to the variation in noise measurements is the test surface. The test surfaces can either be snow or grass and affects the measurement in two very distinct ways: sound propagation from the source to the receiver and the operational behavior of the snowmobile. Data is presented for a known sound pressure speaker source and different snowmobiles on various test days and test surfaces. Relationships are shown between the behavior of the sound propagation and track interaction to the ground with the pass-by noise measurements.

Biomechanical Evaluation of Headwear System Prototypes using Digital Human Modeling

Digital human modeling allows for the evaluation of equipment designs before physically building and testing prototypes. This paper presents an example of how digital human modeling was used to perform biomechanical studies on four new designs for future infantry headwear systems. Range of Motion (ROM) and cervical spine forces and moments were compared using static and dynamic simulations in a virtual environment. Results confirmed that headwear system prototypes with optimal overall mass and Centre of Mass (CM) location, as determined by previous human subject trials, exerted the least amount of biomechanical loading. Facial protection was favorable when considering forces and moments in the cervical spine, however when considering ROM, the rigid prototype mandible guards used in this evaluation are not recommended. The shape of a more accommodating mandible guard was developed, and the option to remove facial protection for some tasks was recommended.

Validation Study of a Generalized Minor Rear Vehicle Crash MADYMO Model Utilizing Real World Data

A generalized MADYMO minor rear crash vehicle model with BioRIDII ATD was developed and validated using the mean response of previously published 12 km/h delta-V rear crash tests. BioRIDII simulation pelvis, thorax and head x-axis accelerations, as well as head y-axis angular acceleration, fell within corridors defining +/- one standard deviation of the mean BioRIDII crash test responses. Peak sagittal plane BioRIDII upper neck forces and moments in the simulation were on par with the mean values observed from the crash tests. After the model was validated for 12 km/h delta-V, the model was further exercised by performing simulations with (1) a Hybrid III 50th percentile occupant and (2) by reducing the pulse by 40% of its original value. Results indicate that this generalized minor rear crash model could be useful in accurately estimating occupant kinematics and kinetics in minor crashes up to at least 12 km/h delta-V as an alternative to expensive and time consuming crash testing.

Status of Developing a Near Real-Time Capability for Estimating Space Radiation Exposure Using EMMREM

The central objective of the Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Module (EMMREM) project is to develop and validate a numerical module for completely characterizing time-dependent radiation exposure in the Earth-Moon-Mars and Interplanetary space environments. An important step in the process of building this system is the development of the interfaces between EMMREM's internal components, many of which have existed previously as stand-alone simulation codes. This work specifically discusses the development and implementation of the interface, primarily using the Perl scripting language, between two input data set generators, one of which describes the space radiation environment at some desired location, and a space radiation transport and shielding code, BRYNTRN, that provides estimates at fairly short time intervals of dose and dose equivalent behind shielding.
