Thread Rolling Screws

2012-07-05
CURRENT
J81_201207
This SAE Standard covers requirements for thread rolling screws suitable for use in general engineering applications. (It is intended that "thread rolling" screws have performance capabilities beyond those normally expected of other standard types of tapping screws.) NOTE—The performance requirements covered in this document apply only to the combination of laboratory conditions described in the testing procedures. If other conditions are encountered in an actual service application (such as different materials, thicknesses, hole sizes, etc.), values shown herein for drive torque, torque-to-clamp load, and proof torque may require adjustment.

HISTORICAL
J81_197207
This standard covers requirements for thread rolling screws suitable for use in general engineering applications. (It is intended that “thread rolling” screws have performance capabilities beyond those normally expected of other standard types of tapping screws.) Note: The performance requirements covered in this standard apply only to the combination of laboratory conditions described in the testing procedures. If other conditions are encountered in an actual service application (such as different materials, thicknesses, hole sizes, etc.), values shown herein for drive torque, torque-to-clamp load, and proof torque may require adjustment.

This standard covers requirements for thread rolling screws suitable for use in general engineering applications. (It is intended that "thread rolling" screws have performance capabilities beyond those normally expected of other standard types of tapping screws.) Note: The performance requirements covered in this standard apply only to the combination of laboratory conditions described in the testing procedures. If other conditions are encountered in an actual service application (such as different materials, thicknesses, hole sizes, etc.), values shown herein for drive torque, torque-to-clamp load, and proof torque may require adjustment.

Protective Coatings for Fasteners

2019-10-07
CURRENT
J1648_201910
This SAE Information Report is provided as an advisory guide. Careful discretion as to application is recommended. The content has been presented as accurately as possible, but responsibility for its application lies with the user. It covers finishes applied to fasteners and related topics, corrosion resistance, lubricity, electrical grounding, ultraviolet light, and embrittlement. Table 1 lists these coatings and their properties so that finish selection can be reasonably made in accordance with known and anticipated fastener assembly applications. Application of protective coatings will affect fastener dimensions. This is especially critical for the thread fit of mating parts because the pitch diameter increases by four times the coating thickness. Explanation is covered in Section 5.
