Impact of Plasma Stretch on Spark Energy Release Rate under Flow Conditions

2022-03-29
2022-01-0438
Performance of the ignition system becomes more important than ever, because of the extensively used EGR in modern spark-ignition engines. Future lean burn SI and SACI combustion modes demand even stronger ignition capability for robust ignition control. For spark-based ignition systems, extensive research has been carried out to investigate the discharge characteristics of the ignition process, including discharge current amplitude, discharge duration, spark energy, and plasma stretching. The correlation between the spark stretch and the discharge energy, as well as the impact of discharge current level on this correlation, are important with respect to both ignition performance, and ignition system design. In this paper, a constant volume combustion chamber is applied to study the impact of plasma stretch on the spark energy release process with cross-flow speed from 0 m/s up to 70 m/s.

A Data-Driven Diagnostic System Utilizing Manufacturing Data Mining and Analytics

2017-03-28
2017-01-0233
The wide applications of automatic sensing devices and data acquisition systems in automotive manufacturing have resulted in a data-rich environment, which demands new data mining methodologies for effective data fusion and information integration to support decision making. This paper presents a new methodology for developing a diagnostic system using manufacturing system data for high-value assets in automotive manufacturing. The proposed method extends the basic attributes control charts with the following key elements: optimal feature subset selection considering multiple features and correlation structure, balancing the type I and type II errors in decision making, on-line process monitoring using adaptive modeling with control charts, and diagnostic performance assessment using shift and trend detection. The performance of the developed diagnostic system can be continuously improved as the knowledge of machine faults is automatically accumulated during production.

Estimation on the Location of Peak Pressure at Quick Start of HEV Engine Employing Ion Sensing Technology

2008-06-23
2008-01-1566
In this paper an estimation method on location of peak pressure (LPP) employing flame ionization measurement, with the spark plug as a sensor, was discussed to achieve combustion parameters estimation at quick start of HEV engines. Through the cycle-based ion signal analysis, the location of peak pressure can be extracted in individual cylinder for the optimization of engine quick start control of HEV engine. A series of quick start processes with different cranking speed and engine coolant temperature are tested for establishing the relationship between the ion signals and the combustion parameters. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm is used in this study for estimating these two combustion parameters. The experiment results show that the location of peak pressure can be well established by this method.

Particulate Emission Characteristics and GPF Performance of WLTC Cycle based on Exhaust Gas Simulator

2023-09-29
2023-32-0097
GDI engine has gained much popularity in vehicle market with its high thermal efficiency. However, because of higher particulate emissions, it becomes harder for GDI engines to fulfill the iteration of emission regulations in various countries. As a result, Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) has received more and more attention and applications. It is important to study the particulate emission and GPF performance especially for transient cycles. With a self-designed test bench with burner named Exhaust Gas Simulator, a transient control strategy to simulate the exhaust state of the WLTC cycle has been developed and achieved a fast and stable ash accumulation rate. Three levels of ash loading, in terms of 0g/L, 5g/L and 35g/L, were accumulated on respective GPF for different aging degrees with this test bench. The effect of ash loading on GPF performance was investigated.
