Development of a Lube Filter with Controlled Additive Release for Modern Heavy Duty Diesel Engines Utilizing EGR

As on-highway heavy-duty diesel engine designs have evolved to meet tighter emission regulations, the crankcase environment for heavy-duty engine lubricants has become more challenging. The introduction of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has allowed for significant reductions of exhaust emissions, but has led to increased oxidation and acid build-up in the lubricant. Engine lubricant quality is important to help ensure engine durability, engine performance, and reduce maintenance downtime. Increased acidity and oxidation accelerate the rate at which the lubricant quality is degraded and hence shorten its' useful life. This paper explores the use of a lube filter with a controlled additive release to maintain lubricant quality.

DEVELOPMENT OF DIESEL OXIDATION CATALYSTS FOR HEAVY DUTY ENGINES

Flow-through diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC's) have been shown to be an effective means of reducing emissions from diesel engines. In this work, the further development of diesel oxidation catalysts for the control of emissions from heavy duty engines is illustrated. Laboratory reactor and engine dynamometer data obtained from engine-based accelerated poisoning and aging studies demonstrate that HC, CO and SO2 oxidation by DOC's can be modified by adjusting platinum and vanadium loadings in alumina-based Pt/V catalyst formulations. The performance and durability of this type of catalyst system are demonstrated with several aging cycles on heavy-duty engines. The fresh performance of two catalyst systems was determined on both US Heavy Duty Transient and ECE-R49 Test cycles with a 1991 calibration Perkins Phaser 6.0 L engine. Gas phase emissions were reduced by a similar amount for both catalysts over both cycles (HC: 60-70%, CO: 45-75%).

Class 8 Trucks Operating On Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel With Particulate Filter Systems: A Fleet Start-Up Experience

Previous studies have shown that regenerating particulate filters are very effective at reducing particulate matter emissions from diesel engines. Some particulate filters are passive devices that can be installed in place of the muffler on both new and older model diesel engines. These passive devices could potentially be used to retrofit large numbers of trucks and buses already in service, to substantially reduce particulate matter emissions. Catalyst-type particulate filters must be used with diesel fuels having low sulfur content to avoid poisoning the catalyst. A project has been launched to evaluate a truck fleet retrofitted with two types of passive particulate filter systems and operating on diesel fuel having ultra-low sulfur content. The objective of this project is to evaluate new particulate filter and fuel technology in service, using a fleet of twenty Class 8 grocery store trucks. This paper summarizes the truck fleet start-up experience.
