Evaluation of Trim Absorption to Exterior Dynamic and Acoustic Excitations Using a Hybrid Physical-Modal Approach

The NVH study of trimmed vehicle body is essential in improving the passenger comfort and optimizing the vehicle weight. Efficient modal finite-element approaches are widely used in the automotive industry for investigating the frequency response of large vibro-acoustic systems involving a body structure coupled to an acoustic cavity. In order to accurately account for the localized and frequency-dependant damping mechanism of the trim components, a direct physical approach is however preferred. Thus, a hybrid modal-physical approach combines both efficiency and accuracy for large trimmed body analysis. Dynamic loads and exterior acoustic loads can then be applied on the trimmed body model in order to evaluate the transfer functions between these loads and the acoustic response in the car compartment.

A Development of Energy Management System with Semi-Transparent Solar Roof and Off-Cycle Credit Test Methodology for Solar Power Assisted Automobile.

CO2 emission is more serious in recent years and automobile manufacturers are interested in developing technologies to reduce CO2 emissions. Among various environmental-technologies, the use of solar roof as an electric energy source has been studied extensively. For example, in order to reduce the cabin ambient temperature, automotive manufacturers offer the option of mounting a solar cell on the roof of the vehicle [1]. In this paper, we introduce the semi-transparent solar cell mounted on a curved roof glass and we propose a solar energy management system to efficiently integrate the electricity generated from the solar roof into internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. In order to achieve a high efficiency solar system in different driving, we improve the usable power other than peak power of solar roof. Peak power or rated power is measured power (W) in standard test condition (@ 25°C, light intensity of 1000W/m2(=1Sun)).

A Study on Optimization of the Cross-Section of Door Impact Beam for Weight Reduction

This paper focuses on the optimization of the cross-section of a panel type impact door beam. The key parameters of the cross-section of the beam were artificially changed by using a geometry morphing tool FCM (Fast Concept Modeler), which is plugged in to CATIA. Then, the metamodel of FE (Finite Element) analysis results was created and optimized using LS-OPT. The ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) analysis of results was carried out to find the factor of weight reduction. Finally, a new cross section concept was proposed to overcome the limitation of old structure. The optimization was carried out for the beam with the final cross-section to have 10 % or more reduction in total weight.

Pre-Validation Method of Steering System by Using Hybrid Simulation

In this study, the preliminary validation method of the steering system is constructed and the objective is to satisfy the target performance in the conceptual design stage for minimizing the problems after the detailed design. The first consideration about steering system is how to extract the reliable steering effort for parking. The tire model commonly used in MBD(Multi-Body Dynamics) has limited ability to represent deformations under heavy loads. Therefore, it is necessary to study adequate tire model to simulate the behavior due to the large deformation and friction between the ground and the tire. The two approaches related with F tire model and mathematical model are used. The second is how to extract each link’s load in the conceptual design stage. Until now, each link’s load could be derived only by actual vehicle test, and a durability analysis was performed using only pre-settled RIG test conditions.

Study of Optimizing Sliding Door Efforts and Package Layout

A sliding door is one of the car door systems, which is generally applied to the vans. Compared with swing doors, a sliding door gives comfort to the passengers when they get in or out the car. With an increasing number of the family-scale activities, there followed a huge demand on the vans, which caused growing interests in the convenience technology of the sliding door system. A typical sliding door system has negative effects on the vehicle interior package and the operating effort. Since the door should move backward without touching the car body, the trajectory of the center rail should be a curve. The curve-shaped center rail infiltrates not only the passenger shoulder room, but also the opening flange curve, which results in the interior package loss. Moreover, as the passenger pulls the door outside handle along the normal direction of the door outer skin, the curved rail causes the opening effort loss.

Modeling of Door Slam Noise Index by using Sound Quality Metric

Door slam noise is very important sound, because Door Slam noise gives a big effect in high-class feeling of vehicle and brand identity. But it is very difficult to analyze door slam noise by traditional analysis and overall sound level. Moreover, the short occurrence time of Door Slam noise makes the analysis more difficult. In this paper, we used the latest developed sound quality methods for analyzing Door Slam noise. And we had performed jury test for luxury vehicles. After that we had carried out correlation analysis between objective analysis and subjective test. Finally, we could suggest Door Slam noise Index by linear regression analysis.

A Flexible Multi-Body Dynamic Model for Analyzing the Hysteretic Characteristics and the Dynamic Stress of a Taper Leaf Spring

This paper proposes a modeling technique which is able to not only reliably and easily represent the hysteretic characteristics but also analyze the dynamic stress of a taper leaf spring. The flexible multi-body dynamic model of the taper leaf spring is developed by interfacing the finite element model and computation model of the taper leaf spring. Rigid dummy parts are attached at the places where a finite element leaf model is in contact with an adjacent one in order to apply contact model. Friction is defined in the contact model to represent the hysteretic phenomenon of the taper leaf spring. The test of the taper leaf spring is conducted for the validation of the reliability of the flexible multi-body dynamic model of the taper leaf spring developed in this paper. The test is started at an unloaded state with the excitation amplitude of 1∼2mm/sec and frequency of 132mm. First, the simulation is conducted with the same condition as the test.

Fatigue Strength Evaluation for the Leaf Spring of Commercial Vehicle Considering U Bolt Fixing Force

Suspension system of vehicle is very important because it has an effect on ride comfort and safety. And the leaf spring is one of the major parts of commercial vehicle. By that reason it has to be designed to operate under severe condition to ensure enough endurance. But the traditional method for fatigue design needs repeated fatigue tests for each design according to its geometry, material, and operating condition. This means that a lot of time and money is needed for those tests. Thus, in this paper, a fatigue design method for leaf spring based on numerical analysis is proposed. At first, stress analysis is performed to get the stress under operation load or rig tests. And fatigue analysis is performed to get the fatigue life and to ensure the safety of leaf spring. Through this study, design parameters that play vital role in fatigue life of the leaf spring can be found out.

Development of High Wear Resistant and Durable Coatings for Al Valve Spring Retainer

The use of light-weight materials in automotive engine components has increased in order to achieve better fuel efficiency and engine performance. In this study, Al alloy (AI5056) valve spring retainer can reduce a weight by 63% in comparison to steel and improve the upper limit of engine speed by about 500rpm. The Al valve spring retainer was fabricated by cold forging and coated with hard anodizing, DLC (diamond like coating), cold spray and thermal spray for better wear resistance and durability. We conclude that among these materials the DLC coating improves the wear resistance of Al valve spring retainer and has a sufficient durability after endurance testing.

Resin Fuel Filler Lid for On-Line Painting

A resin fuel lid capable of being electrostatically painted on-line with the vehicle body-in-white was developed to achieve a light weight fuel adapter assembly with improved color match to surrounding body panels when compared with outsourced painting. The fuel lid was molded out of a conductive, high heat capable PA/PPO resin, and painted with automotive body paint systems. Key development items for this part included validation of part conductivity, on-line capability of the resin material, development of an attachment scheme to achieve proper grounding of the part, determination of paint jig location for proper paint coverage and color match to the body, and evaluation of the final fit & finish. These studies were conducted in combination of both lab and on-line trials. Additionally, the final painted part assembly was extensively tested to achieve the appropriate quality of the surface treatment and strength and durability of the design construction.

Correlation of a CAE Hood Deflection Prediction Method

As we continue to create ever-lighter road vehicles, the challenge of balancing weight reduction and structural performance also continues. One of the key parts this occurs on is the hood, where lighter materials (e.g. aluminum) have been used. However, the aerodynamic loads, such as hood lift, are essentially unchanged and are driven by the front fascia and front grille size and styling shape. This paper outlines a combination CFD/FEA prediction method for hood deflection performance at high speeds, by using the surface pressures as boundary conditions for a FEA linear static deflection analysis. Additionally, custom post-processing methods were developed to enhance flow analysis and understanding. This enabled the modification of existing test methods to further improve accuracy to real world conditions. The application of these analytical methods and their correlation with experimental results are discussed in this paper.

Considerations for the Application of Magnetorheological Dampers to a Crossover SUV

Magnetorheological (MR) dampers have been used in the market on various vehicles since 2001. They use a special oil-based fluid (Magnetorheological Fluid, MRF) that contains small iron particles (1-10 μm in size) and a controllable electromagnetic piston to allow a wide range of damping forces. The system's wide range of available damping force combined with nearly instantaneous response time helps maximize body control while simultaneously providing outstanding ride comfort. This paper describes how the MR technology was combined with conventional suspension tuning to achieve an enhanced level of dynamic performance. While the MR damper offers enhanced performance, its unique response characteristics require tuning of other hardware components that could be considered to be beyond the normal tuning range for that of a conventional suspension.

Investigation of Gap Deflector Efficiency for Reduction of Sunroof Buffeting

The efficiency of a gap-type of deflector for suppressing vehicle sunroof buffeting is studied in this work. Buffeting is an unpleasant low frequency booming caused by flow-excited Helmholtz resonance of the interior cabin. Accurate prediction of this phenomenon requires accounting for the bi-directional coupling between the transient shear layer aerodynamics (vortex shedding) and the acoustic response of the cabin. Numerical simulations were performed using a CFD/CAA numerical method based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). The well established LBM approach provides the time-dependent solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, and directly captures both turbulent and acoustic pressure fluctuations over a wide range of scales given adequate computational grid resolution. In this study the same gap-type deflector configuration is installed on two different types of vehicles, a SUV and a sedan.

With the recent development of technologies for interpreting vibration and noise of vehicles, it has become possible for carmakers to reduce idle vibration and driving noise in the phase of preceding development. Thus, the issue of noise generation is drawing keen attention from production of prototype car through mass-production development. J. D. Power has surveyed the levels of customer satisfaction with all vehicles sold in the U.S. market and released the Initial Quality Study (IQS) index. As a growing number of emotional quality-related items are added to the IQS evaluation index, it is necessary to secure a sufficiently high quality level of low-frequency speaker sound against rattle noise. It is required to make a preceding review on the package tray panel, which is located at the bottom of the rear glass where the woofer speakers of a passenger sedan are installed, the door module panel in which the door speakers are built.

The Development of Multi-link Suspensions for Hyundai Genesis

In this paper, front and rear 5-link independent suspension systems are introduced which are developed for the Hyundai Genesis. The front suspension has two upper links, two lower links, and a tie-rod. In the rear suspension, there are two upper links, a lower link, a trailing link, and a toe control link. The design concepts of front and rear suspension systems are explained, respectively. Also, it is presented how the suspension characteristics are designed and optimized to satisfy the desired performances such as luxurious ride feeling and precise handling.

Material Property and Formability Characterization of Various Types of High Strength Dual Phase Steel

As a result of the increasing usage of high strength steels in automotive body structures, a number of formability issues, particularly bend and edge stretch failures, have come to the forefront of attention of both automotive OEMs and steel makers. This investigation reviews these stamping problems and attempts to identify how certain material properties and microstructural features relate to forming behavior. Various types of dual phase steels were evaluated in terms of tensile, bending, hole expansion, limiting dome height, and impact properties. In addition, the key microstructural differences of each grade were characterized. In order to understand the material behavior under practical conditions, stamping trials were conducted using actual part shapes. It was concluded that material properties can be optimized to maximize local formability in stamping applications. The results also emphasize that the dual phase classification can encompass a broad range of property variations.

Prediction of Suspension Fundamental Mode Frequency with Extraction of Dynamic Properties of Automotive Shock Absorbers and Tire

The automotive shock absorber has various functions in car performance. Particularly, it is a dominant tuning parameter to get good primary and secondary ride characteristics within 1-35Hz ranges in car development. Thus, understanding of characteristics of shock absorber in this frequency range is indispensable to both test and analysis engineers for an effective and systematic approach. In this study, tire is also investigated from the same point of view. Frequency dependent stiffness and damping coefficient are extracted by discrete sine swept test under constant velocity of 25, 50, 100mm/sec which represent typical road surface conditions[1]. The responses are analyzed on frequency domain and the basic theoretical background for this approach is introduced.

The Studies of Crash Characteristics According to Chassis Frame Types

There are various tests for evaluating how well a vehicle protects people in a crash. The frontal and offset crash test is one of the most important tests that evaluate the crashworthiness of a vehicle. In this paper, we will discuss some parameters that have a major effect on the amount and pattern of intrusion into the occupant compartment during the frontal and offset crash test. And the characteristics of impact are described according to the types of chassis frame, T-type frame and #-type frame. The T-frame has worse performance than #-frame in crash, So it is necessary to make stronger dash compartments in T-frame. We will design a vehicle which has optimized body, chassis structure and material selections by controlling major parameters of frontal crash performance.

Reduction of Aeolian Noise from Roof Rack Crossbars Using Asymmetric Cross-Section Geometry

Roof racks have become a very popular feature of vehicles as the market demand for SUV's and RV's has increased drastically over the years. Aeolian tone from the cross bars however, could be a source of severe discomfort for the passengers. Both experimental and numerical steps are taken to enhance the understanding of the generation mechanism of the wind noise. A successful reduction of the noise is achieved by imposing asymmetry in the section geometry, which reduces the strength of Karman vortices shed downstream.

DEVELOPMENT OF 7003 ALUMINUM EXTRUSIONS FOR MOTORCYCLE FRAME APPLICATIONS

The 7003-T4 alloy has been developed for production of motorcycle frame bodies. The developed material has been applied to the 2001 Goldwing motorcycle recently introduced to the world market. During the material development, a designed experiment was planned by which nine 7003 alloy variants were cast and homogenized. The cast billets were extruded into hollow frame tubes on a production extrusion line and the natural aging response of the material was evaluated. The tendency for recrystallized grains at the surface of the extruded tubes was measured and confirmed to be at an acceptable level for painting. The reversion and recovery of mechanical properties during paint curing was evaluated and curing limits were established for mass production. From the results, parametric equations were derived to describe the relationships between mechanical properties, composition and natural aging time to insure design compliance.
