Research on Intelligent Layout of Door Hinge Based on CATIA CAA

As one of the most important auto-body moving parts, door hinge is the key point of door design and its accessories arrangement, also the premise of the door kinematic analysis. We proposed an effective layout procedure for door hinge and developed an intelligent system on CATIA CAA platform to execute it. One toolbar and five function modules are constructed - Axis Arrangement, Section, Parting Line, Kinematic, Hinge Database. This system integrated geometrical algorithms, automatically calculate the minimum clearances between doors, fender and hinges on sections to judge if the layout is feasible. As the sizes of the clearances are set to 0s, the feasible layout regions and extreme start/end points are shown in parts window, which help the engineer to check the parting line and design a new one. Our system successfully implemented the functions of five modules for the layout of door hinge axis and parting line based on a door hinge database.

Front Rail Crashworthiness Design for Front Oblique Impact Using a Magic Cube Approach

The front rail, as one main energy absorption component of vehicle front structures, should present steady progressive collapse along its axis and avoid bending collapse during the front oblique impact, but when the angle of loading direction is larger than some critical angle, it will appear bending collapse causing reduced capability of crash energy absorption. This paper is concerned with crashworthiness design of the front rail on a vehicle chassis frame structure considering uncertain crash directions. The objective is to improve the crash direction adaptability of the front rail, without deteriorating the vehicle's crashworthiness performance. Magic Cube (MQ) approach, a systematic design approach, is conducted to analyze the design problem. By applying Space Decomposition of MQ, an equivalent model of the vehicle chassis frame is generated, which simplifies the design problem.

Numerical Study on the Influence of Convergent-Divergent Nozzle Structures on the In-Nozzle Flow and Jet Breakup Based on the OpenFOAM

The non-conventional diesel nozzles have attracted more and more attention for their ability to promote jet breakup. In the present study, the internal nozzle flow and jet breakup relying on the convergent-divergent nozzle are investigated by combining the cavitation model and LES model with Multi-Fluid-Quasi-VOF model based on the OpenFOAM code. This is a novel method for which the interphase forces caused by the relative velocity of gas and liquid can be taken into account while sharpening the gas-liquid interface, which is able to accurately present the evolution processes of cavitation and jet breakup. Primarily, the numerical model was verified by the mass flow rate, spray momentum flux, discharge coefficient and effective jet velocity of the prototype Spray D nozzle from the literature.

Numerical Study on Flash Boiling Spray of Multi-Hole Injector

Flash boiling spray is effective in improving the atomization and evaporation characteristics for gasoline direct injection engines. However, for a multi-hole injector the morphology structure of spray has an obvious change with the fuel temperature increasing or the ambient pressure decreasing, which influences the process of mixture formation and flame propagation. Specially, the spray collapses with both long penetration and a narrow spray angle above certain high superheat degree, which deteriorates air/fuel mixing and hence increases emissions. It is not desired for engine applications while the mechanism of spray structure transformation for multi-hole injector still remains unclear. In the present study, a systematic flash boiling spray model for multi-hole injector is built to investigate the flash boiling spray of multi-hole injector.

Crushing Analysis and Lightweight Design of Tapered Tailor Welded Hybrid Material Tubes under Oblique Impact

The increasing demand for lightweight design of the whole vehicle has raised critical weight reduction targets for crash components such as front rails without deteriorating their crash performances. To this end the last few years have witnessed a huge growth in vehicle body structures featuring hybrid materials including steel and aluminum alloys. In this work, a type of tapered tailor-welded tube (TTWT) made of steel and aluminum alloy hybrid materials was proposed to maximize the specific energy absorption (SEA) and to minimize the peak crushing force (PCF) in an oblique crash scenario. The hybrid tube was found to be more robust than the single material tubes under oblique impacts using validated finite element (FE) models. Compared with the aluminum alloy tube and the steel tube, the hybrid tube can increase the SEA by 46.3% and 86.7%, respectively, under an impact angle of 30°.

Characteristics of HCCI Diesel Combustion Operated with a Hollow Cone Spray

This paper presents two factors for improving the performance and emissions characteristics in HCCI diesel combustion, one is reducing compression ratio and another is changing the injector position. In a previous study, it was shown that HCCI diesel combustion could be realized by utilizing a hollow-cone spray with normal injection pressure. However there remained two major problems of engine instability and increase in BSFC (decrease in brake thermal efficiency). By reducing the compression ratio from 18.8 to 16.8, the engine stability was much improved to the level of conventional diesel combustion and the increase in BSFC became almost half, which was mainly due to the change of combustion phasing. In addition to this, application of 5 mm inside position of the injector realized almost no penalty of BSFC at higher load condition.

A Solution for Cylinder Wall Scuffing

A solution for cylinder wall scuffing is researched. By means of the finite element method, a mathematical model to investigate the temperature field and thermal deformation of the piston is established, which can be used for predicting the cylinder wall scuffing in both the design process of a new diesel engine and the improvement process of the combustion system of an operating diesel engine. The experimental data support the calculated results obtained by using the model. As an application example, the temperature fields and thermal deformations of the piston in the 6E150C diesel engine, which suffers from the cylinder wall scuffing during the period of operation, are analyzed quantitatively by using the mathematical model. After an improved piston with new structure and good cooling system is used in the 6E150C diesel engine, the cylinder wall scuffing no longer occurs.

Control-Oriented Modeling of Soot Emissions in Gasoline Partially Premixed Combustion with Pilot Injection

In this paper, a control-oriented soot model was developed for real-time soot prediction and combustion condition optimization in a gasoline Partially Premixed Combustion (PPC) Engine. PPC is a promising combustion concept that achieves high efficiency, low soot and NOx emissions simultaneously. However, soot emissions were found to be significantly increased with high EGR and pilot injection, therefore a predictive soot model is needed for PPC engine control. The sensitivity of soot emissions to injection events and late-cycle heat release was investigated on a multi-cylinder heavy duty gasoline PPC engine, which indicated main impact factors during soot formation and oxidation processes. The Hiroyasu empirical model was modified according to the sensitivity results, which indicated main influences during soot formation and oxidation processes. By introducing additional compensation factors, this model can be used to predict soot emissions under pilot injection.

Development of a Reduced Chemical Mechanism for Dimethyl Ether (DME) Using a Decoupling Methodology

Dimethyl ether (DME) attracts increasing attentions in recent years, because it can reduce the carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and soot emissions for engines as the transportation fuel or the fuel additive. In this paper, a reduced DME oxidation mechanism is developed using the decoupling methodology. The rate constants of the fuel-related reactions are optimized using the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) to reproduce the ignition delay times in shock tubes and major species concentrations in jet-stirred reactors (JSR) over low-to-high temperatures. In NSGA-II, the range of the rate constants was considered to ensure the reliability of the optimized mechanism. Moreover, an improved objective function was proposed to maintain the faithfulness of the optimized mechanism to the original reaction mechanism, and a new method was presented to determine the optimal solution from the Pareto front.

Experimental and Numerical Study of the Liquid Film Separation and Atomization at Expanding Corners

The phenomenon of a thin liquid film separation and atomization at expanding corners during the spray/wall interaction is usually encountered in premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) engines. However, detailed information about the film separation is very limited, especially under high injection pressure conditions. In this study, experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of injection pressure and impingement distance on the evolutions of the impinging spray and the adhered film at simplified geometries with an expanding corner by employing a high-speed camera. In addition, an improved hybrid film separation and atomization model was developed, which includes the sub-models of film separation criterion, film separation mass ratio, and the film atomization model based on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability theory.

The Evaporation Characteristics of Cylinder Oil of Low-Speed 2-Stroke Marine Engines

The combustion of cylinder lubricating oil (called as cylinder oil for short) is one of the major sources of PM emissions of low-speed 2-stroke marine diesel engines. For pre-mixed combustion low-speed 2-stroke marine gas engines, the auto-ignition of cylinder oil might result in knock or more hazard abnormal combustion - pre-ignition. Evaporation is a key sub-process of the auto-ignition process of cylinder oil droplets. The evaporation behavior has a profound impact on the auto-ignition and combustion processes of cylinder oil droplets, and a great influence on engine combustion performance and emission characteristics. This paper applied an oil suspending apparatus to investigate the evaporation behavior of cylinder oil droplets and base oil droplets. The effects of ambient temperatures on the evaporation process were measured and analyzed. The results indicate that the evaporation of cylinder oil includes heating, evaporating, pyrolysis, and polymerization.

A Numerical Study on the Effects of Hot EGR on the Operation of Natural Gas Engine Ignited by Diesel-Butanol Blends

Butanol, which is a renewable biofuel, has been regarded as a promising alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. When blended with diesel and applied to pilot ignited natural gas engines, butanol has the capability to achieve lower emissions without sacrifice on thermal efficiency. However, high blend ratio of butanol is limited by its longer ignition delay caused by the higher latent heat and higher octane number, which restricts the improvement of emission characteristics. In this paper, the potential of increasing butanol blend ratio by adding hot exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is investigated. 3D CFD model based on a detailed kinetic mechanism was built and validated by experimental results of natural gas engine ignited by diesel/butanol blends. The effects of hot EGR is then revealed by the simulation results of the combustion process, heat release traces and also the emissions under different diesel/butanol blend ratios.

Large Eddy Simulation of Liquid Fuel Spray and Combustion with Gradually Varying Grid

In this work, large eddy simulation (LES) with a K-equation subgrid turbulent kinetic energy model is implemented into the CFD code KIVA3V to study the features of liquid fuel spray and combustion using gradually varying grid in a constant volume chamber. The characteristic time-scale combustion model (CTC) incorporating a turbulent timescale is adopted to predict the combustion process and the SHELL auto-ignition model is used to predict auto-ignition. Combustion is also simulated using Parallel Detailed Chemistry with Lu's n-heptane reduced mechanism (58 species), which has been added into the KIVA3V-LES code. The computational results are compared with Sandia experimental data for non-reacting and reacting cases. As a result, LES can capture the complex structure of the spray and temperature distribution as well as the trend of ignition delay and flame lift-off length variations. Better results are obtained using the Parallel Detailed Chemistry than the CTC model.

Mixing Effects of Early Injection in Diesel Spray Using LES Model with Different Subgrid Scale Models

Early injection timing is an effective measure of pre-mixture formation for diesel low-temperature combustion. Three algebraic subgrid models (Smagorinsky model, dynamic Smagorinsky model and WALE model) and one-equation kinetic energy turbulent model using modified TAB breakup model (MTAB model) have been implemented into KIVA3V code to make a detailed large eddy simulation of the atomization and evaporation processes of early injection timing in a constant volume chamber and a Ford high-speed direct-injection diesel engine. The results show that the predictive vapor mass fraction and liquid penetration using LES is in good agreement with the experiment results. In combustion chamber, the sub-grid turbulent kinetic energy and viscosity using LES are less than with the RANS models, and following the increasing time, the sub-grid turbulent kinetic energy and viscosity also increase and are concentrated on the spray area.

Multi-Objective Optimization Design of Hybrid Material Bumper for Pedestrian Protection and Crashworthiness Design

In vehicle accident, the bumper beam generally requires high stiffness for sufficient survival space for occupants while it may cause serious pedestrian lower extremity injuries. The aim of this study is to promote an aluminum-steel hybrid material double-hat bumper to meet the comprehensive requirements. The hybrid bumper is designed to improve the frontal crash and pedestrian protection performances in collision accidents. Finite element (FE) models of the hybrid bumper was built, validated, and integrated into an automotive model. The Fixed Deformable Barrier (FDB) and Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) legform model were used to obtain the vehicle crashworthiness and pedestrian lower leg injury indicators. Numerical results showed that the hybrid bumper had a great potential for crashworthiness performance and pedestrian protection characteristics. Based on this, a multi-objective optimization design (MOD) was performed to search the optimal geometric parameters.

Taking a specific diesel engine as a calculation example, three kinds of ptimized calculation methods are studied in detail for the optimization of the performance of Diesel Engine cycle and the following conclusions are drawn: Sequential Linear Programming (S.L.P) suits for the rough optimized calculation of the performance of Diesel Engine cycle. Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique (S.U.M.T) suits for the precise optimized calculation of the performance of Diesel Engine cycle with less variables. Orthognal Network Optimization Method (O.N.O.M) has a wide adaptability, but calculating time is longer, it suits for the precise optimized calculation of the performance of Diesel Engine cycle with more variables.

This paper provides a new measuring technique to obtain the concentration and temperature field of a unsymmetrical three dimensional transient diesel spray by the laser interfero-holographic and tomographic analysis. The theory to get the concentration and temperature distribution of a spray by laser technique is stated in detail. The experimental installation and optical system are given concretely. Finally, the test results are analysed satisfactorily.

Analysis of Characteristic of Microwave Regeneration for Diesel Particulate Filter

The mathematical model for the microwave regeneration of diesel particulate filter is proposed according to the characteristic of microwave regeneration process. The model is used to calculate the temperature field, distribution of particulate and density field of oxygen in the filter during the process of regeneration with typical ceramic foam particulate fitter data. The parametric study demonstrates how some of the main parameters, such as microwave attenuation constant of the filter, filter particulate loading, the power and distribution of microwave energy and so on, affect the efficiency of regeneration, the maximum filter temperature and regeneration duration. The results show that it is possible to regenerate the diesel particulate filters in certain conditions by using microwave energy.

Numerical Investigation of the Effects of Physical Properties on Spray Characteristics and NVH Characteristics

For liquid fueled engine, the fuel atomization affects fuel’s evaporation, combustion, noise and vibration characteristics eventually. In this study, the effects of fuel species on the internal flow and near field primary breakup characteristics of a nozzle “Spray C” are investigated. Based on the framework of OpenFOAM, the newly developed solver which coupled cavitation model and the multifluid-quasi-VOF (Volume-of-Fluid) model, and combines the LES (Large Eddy Simulation) are applied to simulate the nozzle inner flow and near field jet breakup when using diesel and biodiesel respectively. The transient characteristics of nozzle inner flow and near field spray of two different fuels were analyzed, and the variation of axial pressure and velocity of nozzle was obtained. The simulation results show that the cavitation of biodiesel with high viscosity and low saturated vapor pressure develops slower and weaker.

The starting knock of R4102 D.I. diesel engine are analyzed experimentally based on the transient speed and first and third cylinder indicator diagrams that were taken from updated data acquisition system developed by the authors[1][2]. The influence of the starting knock on the strength of connecting rod, piston and piston ring are also studied. The results show that the influence of the starting knock is larger than the influence of the rated conditions. So the starting knock must be thought in the engine design.
