FPGA-Based Development for Sophisticated Automotive Embedded Safety Critical System

As software (SW) becomes more and more an important aspect of embedded system development, project schedules are requiring the earlier development of software simultaneously with hardware (HW). In addition, verification has increasingly challenged the design of complex mixed-signal SoC products. This is exacerbated for automotive safety critical SoC products with a high number of analogue interfaces (sensors and actuators) to the physical components such as an airbag SoC chipset. Generally, it is widely accepted that verification accounts for around 70% of the total SoC development. Since integration of HW and SW is the most crucial step in embedded system development, the sooner it is done, the sooner verification can begin. As such, any approaches which could allow verification and integration of HW/SW to be deployed earlier in the development process and help to decrease verification effort, (e.g.: accelerate verification runs) are of extreme interest.

External Biofidelity Evaluation of Pedestrian Leg-Form Impactors

Current state-of-the-art vehicles implement pedestrian protection features that rely on pedestrian detection sensors and algorithms to trigger when impacting a pedestrian. During the development phase, the vehicle must “learn” to discriminate pedestrians from the rest of potential impacting objects. Part of the training data used in this process is often obtained in physical tests utilizing legform impactors whose external biofidelity is still to be evaluated. This study uses THUMS as a reference to assess the external biofidelity of the most commonly used impactors (Flex-PLI, PDI-1 and PDI-2). This biofidelity assessment was performed by finite element simulation measuring the bumper beam forces exerted by each surrogate on a sedan and a SUV. The bumper beam was divided in 50 mm sections to capture the force distribution in both vehicles. This study, unlike most of the pedestrian-related literature, examines different impact locations and velocities.

Sensor Fusion as an Enabling Technology for Safety-critical Driver Assistance Systems

Driver assistance systems are incorporating more and more advanced safety functions. As these functions have to react quickly and reliably in emergency situations with a false alarm rate close to zero a high integrity of the environmental perception is required. This elevated level of signal integrity can be achieved by data fusion, where the information of several, in general heterogeneous sensors is combined to obtain a better model of the environment in terms of accuracy, object integrity, object identity, etc. As an example, we demonstrate the power of sensor fusion by an automatic emergency brake (AEB) system whose environmental perception is based upon a video camera and a radar sensor. In particular we discuss the improvement of kinematic attributes such as object lateral distance as well as the object's confidence or probability of existence.

Electrically Powered Hydraulic Steering (EPHS) was developed in the early 90s and previously applied to vehicle segments B and C (small and medium-sized passenger cars). Till now more than 10 million vehicles are in the field. The advantages consist of the well known power density coming along with the flexible package. Value is added due to the consequent development and usage of electronic control realized in compact physical units. As a result key features for chassis control systems like controllability, high dynamic performance, and low energy consumption are achieved while maintaining mature and robust hydraulic components. Recent market requirements in other segments, e.g. Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) require higher powered motor pump units and lead to the decision to develop products in this direction.

The DCE Supermileage Engine

Supermileage vehicle is a response to fuel crisis in modern times. Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) Supermileage has evolved since five generations as an answer to this crisis. A given Briggs and Stratton engine was modified as a part of the making of the vehicle. The stock engine with a configuration of 150cc, 3.5bhp, pull start, carbureted, L head, flat combustion chamber, air cooled was modified to a configuration of 52cc, 1bhp, starter motor enabled, fuel injected, overhead, wedge shaped combustion chamber with oil cooling. This paper gives an overview of the procedure followed during the designing, analysis and manufacturing of the parts of the engine and the difficulties overcome during the same.

Pressure Control Calibration Time Reduction for EHB Systems

An ABS/TC proportional pressure control can be achieved by using some of the control technology applied to an electro-hydraulic brake (EHB) system. This paper describes a new method for reducing the calibration time of an EHB, and this method may be used for potential advanced ABS/TC proportional control systems. A mathematical model is established to analyze the system and by using the model some common physical relationships are identified. Calibration values of a proportional system in certain pressure ranges can be estimated instead of requiring measurement.

Trade-offs for Vehicle Stability Control Sensor Sets

Customers of new vehicles expect their vehicle to provide reliable operation. One path vehicle manufacturers have chosen to meet this expectation is to offer their customers advanced braking systems. Antilock Brakes (ABS) and Traction Control (TC) are two advanced braking systems that have evolved to a point at which many OEM's offer them as standard equipment. Size, weight, and performance have also improved to the point of near transparent operation in many cases. The current direction of braking system evolution is in making Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) widely available as well. VSC adds the ability to assist the driver in negotiating understeer and oversteer, by adding corrective braking and engine torque to the vehicle as appropriate. A large percentage of VSC system modeling is related to the sensors chosen to provide driver and vehicle dynamic information to the system's electronic control unit (ECU).

The Electromagnetic Immunity of a Vehicle with Non-Metallic Body Panels

Use of non-metallic materials is increasing, with the need to produce lighter, greener and more economical vehicles. This, compounded by the ever-escalating electronic content of vehicles for telematic and safety critical systems, increases the importance of safety and electromagnetic immunity. This paper presents work to quantify the changes in the electromagnetic immunity of a vehicle resulting from the use of non-metallic body panels. Use of statistics has demonstrated that increases (in current induced onto the vehicle harness) up to 10dB can be observed, resulting from the use of non-metallic body panels. However these are no more significant than variations presently found between identical production vehicles.

An Analysis of Trends in Vehicle Technologies Based on Alternative Fuels: Battery Electric Vehicles and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

The burgeoning energy and environmental crisis calls for a pressing need to develop alternative fuels which can replace fossil fuels in the near future. This paper enlists and reviews various vehicle programs based on alternative fuels, focusing mainly on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Firstly we state prominent vehicle programs undertaken by different manufacturers worldwide in BEVs and FCEVs. This is followed by a comparison of vehicle specifications and features highlighting the evident improvements in their utility that have followed with time. A comprehensive analysis of the observed technological trends in the last two decades has been conducted by us. We discuss the patterns of development in the pivotal areas of BEV technology i.e. the battery and the motor in detail.

On-board Diagnostic Expert System via an Enhanced Fault Tree Model

We propose to enhance reliability based diagnosis by enhancing the fault tree model with a sensor layer for capturing evidence. We recognized the need for an automated diagnostic process that can predict and report component failure in vehicles prior to total failure of any system in the vehicle. We also want to take advantage of evidence that can be derived from sensors to reduce the amount of tests required to identify failed components.

The Effects of Impurities on the Corrosion Behavior of Iron in Methanolic Solutions

The electrochemical and corrosion behavior of metals in aqueous environments has received substantial attention. However, relatively little work has been devoted to the electrochemistry and corrosion of metals in non-aqueous environments. Now, with greater pressures to increase fuel efficiencies and decrease exhaust emissions, alternatives and additives to gasoline (including methanol and ethanol) are receiving increased attention from government agencies and automobile manufacturers. Unfortunately, fundamental studies of the corrosion behavior of metals in these solutions are scarce. The objective of the present work is to investigate the electrochemical and corrosion behavior of iron in methanolic solutions containing Cl, H+, SO42-, and H2O. To accomplish this, a full factorial design test matrix was developed to systematically evaluate the effects of these impurities on the corrosion behavior of iron.

Measurement Techniques for Angular Velocity and Acceleration in an impact Environment

The University of Virginia is investigating the use of a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) angular rate sensor to measure head angular acceleration in impact testing. Output from the sensor, which measures angular velocity, must be differentiated to produce angular acceleration. As a precursor to their use in actual testing, a torsional pendulum was developed to analyze an MHD sensor's effectiveness in operating under impact conditions. Differentiated and digitally filtered sensor data provided a good match with the vibratory response of the pendulum for various magnitudes of angular acceleration. Subsequent head drop tests verified that MHD sensors are suitable for measuring head angular acceleration in impact testing.

Influence of Vehicle Body Type on Pedestrian Injury Distribution

Pedestrian impact protection has been a growing area of research over the past twenty or more years. The results from many studies have shown the importance of providing protection to vulnerable road users as a means of reducing roadway fatalities. Most of this research has focused on the vehicle fleet as a whole in datasets that are dominated by passenger cars (cars). Historically, the influence of vehicle body type on injury distribution patterns for pedestrians has not been a primary research focus. In this study we used the Pedestrian Crash Data Study (PCDS) database of detailed pedestrian crash investigations to identify how injury patterns differ for pedestrians struck by light trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles (LTVs) from those struck by cars. AIS 2+ and 3+ injuries for each segment of vehicles were mapped back to both the body region of the pedestrian injured and the vehicle source linked to that injury in the PCDS database.

Development of a Fault Tolerant Steer-By-Wire Steering System

Steer-By-Wire will be the steering technology of the future. The mechanical connection between the hand wheel and the front axle will become obsolete. Independent electronically controlled actuators will set the road wheel steering angles and will provide force feedback to the driver. This paper presents the approach to establish a production intended steer-by-wire solution in two steps. In a first step a fail safe steer-by-wire system with a mechanical backup is developed which meets the functional and performance requirements of today's passenger vehicles. In the second step this concept is expanded to a future fault tolerant system architecture without any mechanical backup.

Correction of Beam Steering for Optical Measurements in Turbulent Reactive Flows

The application of optical diagnostics in turbulent reactive flows often suffers from the beam steering (BS) effects, resulting in degraded image quality and/or measurement accuracy. This work investigated a method to correct the BS effects to improve the accuracy of optical diagnostics, with particle imagine velocimetry (PIV) measurements on turbulent reactive flames as an example. The proposed method used a guiding laser to correct BS. Demonstration in laboratory turbulent flames showed promising results where the accuracy of PIV measurement was significantly enhanced. Applicability to more complicated and practical situations are discussed.

Rollover Testing of a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)

A follow-up case study on rollover testing with a single full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) was conducted under controlled real-world conditions. The purpose of this study was to conduct a well-documented rollover event that could be utilized in evaluating various methods and techniques over the phases associated with rollover accidents. The phases documented and discussed, inherent to rollovers, are: pre-trip, trip, and rolling phases. With recent advances in technology, new devices and techniques have been designed which improve the ability to capture and document the unpredictable dynamic events surrounding vehicle rollovers. One such device is an inertial measurement unit (IMU), which utilizes GPS technology along with integrated sensors to report and record measured dynamic parameters real-time. The data obtained from a RT-4003 IMU device are presented and compared along with previous test data and methodology.

Improving Earpiece Accelerometer Coupling to the Head

As accurate measuring of head accelerations is an important aspect in predicting head injury, it is important that the measuring sensor be well-coupled to the head. Various sensors and sensor mounting schemes have been attempted in the past with varying results. This study uses a small, implantable acceleration sensor pack in the ear to study impact coupling with the human skull. The output from these ear-mounted accelerometers is compared to laboratory reference accelerometers rigidly attached to the skull of two cadaveric head specimens for both low-amplitude oscillatory tests and high-amplitude impact drop tests. The combination of sensor type and mounting scheme demonstrates the feasibility of using ear mounted sensors to predict head acceleration response. Previously reported progressive phase lag was not seen in this study, with the comparison between ear mounted accelerometers and rigidly mounted head accelerometers ranging from very good to excellent.

A Quantitative Safety Assessment Methodology for Safety-Critical Programmable Electronic Systems Using Fault Injection

Given the increased use of programmable embedded electronic systems (PEES) in automotive applications and their vital importance, it is not only important for engineers to design PEES in such a way to meet or exceed safety requirements but also quantify how “safe” these systems are. At the University of Virginia's Center for Safety-Critical Systems, we have developed a safety quantification methodology for embedded real time safety-related systems. The goal of the safety quantification methodology is to provide a generic but rigorous and systematic way of characterizing the dependability behavior of embedded systems that is applicable to a broad range of applications from automotive to nuclear. This paper presents a quantitative safety assessment methodology for safety-critical embedded systems using fault injection (FI). This methodology has been developed, refined and applied to a number of commercial safety-grade systems in the railway, nuclear and avionics industries.

Brake Dynamometer Test Variability - Analysis of Root Causes

Modern project management including brake testing includes the exchange of reliable results from different sources and different locations. The ISO TC22/SWG2-Brake Lining Committee established a task force led by Ford Motor Co. to determine and analyze root causes for variability during dynamometer brake performance testing. The overall goal was to provide guidelines on how to reduce variability and how to improve correlation between dynamometer and vehicle test results. This collaborative accuracy study used the ISO 26867 Friction behavior assessment for automotive brake systems. Future efforts of the ISO task force will address NVH and vehicle-level tests. This paper corresponds to the first two phases of the project regarding performance brake dynamometer testing and presents results, findings and conclusions regarding repeatability (within-lab) and reproducibility (between-labs) from different laboratories and different brake dynamometers.
