Real-time Tire Imbalance Detection Using ABS Wheel Speed Sensors

This presentation proposes an approach to use ABS wheel speed sensor signals together with other vehicle state information from a brake control module to detect an unbalanced tire or tires in real-time. The proposed approach consists of two-stage algorithms that mix a qualitative method using band-pass filtering with a quantitative parameter identification using conditional least squares. This two-stage approach can improve the robustness of tire imbalance or imbalances. The proposed approach is verified through vehicle testing and the test results show the effectiveness of the approach. Presenter Jianbo Lu, Ford Motor Co.

Laboratory and Vehicle Demonstration of “2nd-Generation” LNT + in-situ SCR Diesel Emission Control Systems

Diesel NOx emissions control utilizing combined Lean NOx Trap (LNT) and so-called passive or in-situ Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst technologies (i.e. with reductant species generated by the LNT) has been the subject of several previous papers from our laboratory [ 1 - 2 ]. The present study focuses on hydrocarbon (HC) emissions control via the same LNT+SCR catalyst technology under FTP driving conditions. HC emissions control can be as challenging as NOx control under both current and future federal and California/Green State emission standards. However, as with NOx control, the combined LNT+SCR approach offers advantages for HC emission control over LNT-only aftertreatment. The incremental conversion obtained with the SCR catalyst is shown, both on the basis of vehicle and laboratory tests, to result primarily from HC adsorbed on the SCR catalyst during rich LNT purges that reacts during subsequent lean engine operation.

3-D Ultrasound for Medical Imaging in Space

Ultrasound is attractive for medical imaging in space because scanners can be small, lightweight, low power, and have minimal electromagnetic emissions. In addition, unlike conventional 2-D ultrasound. 3-D ultrasound allows an operator with no diagnostic skills to collect high-quality scans that can be interpreted by a remote expert. This allows 3-D ultrasound to be used effectively in remote locations. These capabilities are illustrated by the MUSTPAC-1, a portable 3-D ultrasound telemedicine system recently developed for the U.S. military. Design, implementation, and field experiences with the MUSTPAC-1 are discussed, and extensions for use in space are proposed.

Control-oriented Reduced-order Models for Urea Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems Using a Physics-based Approach

Urea-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) after-treatment systems are used for reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions in medium and heavy duty diesel vehicles. This paper addresses control-oriented modeling, starting from first-principles, of SCR after-treatment systems. Appropriate simplifications are made to yield governing equations of the Urea-SCR. The resulting nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) are discretized and linearized to yield a family of linear finite-dimensional state-space models of the SCR at different operating points. It is further shown that this family of models can be reduced to three operating regions. Within each region, parametric dependencies of the system on physical mechanisms are derived. Further model reduction is shown to be possible in each of the three regions resulting in a second-order linear model with sufficient accuracy.

Verification Testing of the 1970 Anti-Theft Steering Column

This paper outlines the key elements in a laboratory reliability verification test program for an automotive sub-system. Many of these elements are described in some detail through the various stages of development from prototype concept to production. By means of an actual case study, verification testing of the 1970 Ford Anti-Theft Steering Column, steps required to design tests which yield meaningful information and the rationale used to analyze the results are presented. The steering column on a late model automobile is a complex system which combines several functions and features; steering, shifting, warning devices (turn signal and emergency flashers), ignition switch, anti-theft devices plus several safety features. The effectiveness of the overall verification program is evaluated through the presentation of actual field-feedback results.
