Internal combustion engine calibration teaching by Stand Alone System. This paper illustrates a teaching methodology for technical students of internal combustion engine calibration, by stand alone engine control unit with variable ignition and fuel injection time. Using a system named HIS (Stand alone Electronic Control Unit), to change the engine parameters, as fuel injection time and ignition time, the students can optimize fuel consumption, performance and exhaust emission. The tests are developed using the DOE (design of experiments) technique of artificial intelligence.

In 1999, the first generation NOx sensor from NGK Spark Plug, Co., Ltd. was commercialized for use in gasoline LNT NOx after-treatment systems [ 1 ]. Since then, as emissions regulations and OBD requirements have become more stringent, the demand for a high-accuracy NOx sensor with fast light-off has increased, particularly for diesel after-treatment systems. To meet such market demands, NGK Spark Plug, Co., Ltd. has developed, in collaboration with Ford Motor Company, a second generation NOx sensor.

Development of the Ford QVM CNG Bi-Fuel 4.9L F-Series Pickup Truck

A bi-fuel (Compressed Natural Gas [CNG] and gasoline) pickup truck has been developed using the Ford Alternative Fuel Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) process. The base vehicle's 4.9L engine has been specially modified for improved durability on gaseous fuels. The base vehicle's configuration has been designed for conversion to bi-fuel CNG operation. A complete CNG fuel system has been designed and qualified, including fuel tanks, fuel system, and electrical interface. The completed vehicle has been safety and emission certified, demonstrating CARB Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) emissions in MY95. This paper details the design objectives, development process, CNG components, and integration of the two fuel systems.

Experimental investigation on behavior of diesel spray after interference with a circular cylinder

A glow plug is the promising way for improvement for ignition of fuel under cold start condition in high-speed diesel engines. The configuration of a glow plug and a diesel spray in a combustion chamber is important factor to maintain ignitability of fuel at cold start. In this study, flow structure of the spray interfered with a circular cylinder instead of the glow plug was investigated by changing of location of the circular cylinder with respect to the spray. As results, the vortex around the circular cylinder was formed with interference of the spray with the circular cylinder, and appearance position of its vortex was related to interference position of the spray periphery with the circular cylinder was clarified.
