Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry for Flow Analysis in a Single Cylinder Optical Engine

Better understanding of flow phenomena inside the combustion chamber of a diesel engine and accurate measurement of flow parameters is necessary for engine optimization i.e. enhancing power output, fuel economy improvement and emissions control. Airflow structures developed inside the engine combustion chamber significantly influence the air-fuel mixing. In this study, in-cylinder air flow characteristics of a motored, four-valve diesel engine were investigated using time-resolved high-speed Tomographic Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV). Single cylinder optical engine provides full optical access of combustion chamber through a transparent cylinder and flat transparent piston top. Experiments were performed in different vertical planes at different engine speeds during the intake and compression stroke under motoring condition. For visualization of air flow pattern, graphite particles were used for flow seeding.

Experimental Investigation on Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition with Oxygenated Alternative Fuel Blends to Reduce Unburned Hydrocarbon Emissions

For controlling oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particular matter (PM) emissions from diesel engines, various fuel and combustion mode modification strategies are investigated in the past. Low temperature combustion (LTC) is an alternative combustion strategy that reduces NOx and PM emissions through premixed lean combustion. Dual fuel reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) is a promising LTC strategy with better control over the start and end of combustion because of reactivity and equivalence ratio stratification. However, the unburned hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are significantly higher in RCCI, especially at part-load conditions. The present work intends to address this shortcoming by utilizing oxygenated alternative fuels. Considering the limited availability and higher cost, replacing conventional fuels completely with alternative fuels is not feasible.

Effects of Oxidation Upon Long-term Storage of Karanja Biodiesel on the Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a Heavy-Duty Truck Diesel Engine

The presence of unsaturated methyl esters in biodiesel makes it susceptible to oxidation and fuel quality degradation upon long-term storage. In the present work, the effects of oxidation of Karanja biodiesel upon long-term storage on the combustion and emission characteristics of a heavy-duty truck diesel engine are studied. The Karanja biodiesel is stored for one year in a 200 litres steel barrel at room conditions to mimic commercial storage conditions. The results obtained show that compared to diesel, the start of injection of fresh and aged biodiesels are advanced by ~2-degree crank angle, and the ignition delay time is reduced. Aged biodiesel showed a slightly smaller ignition delay compares to fresh biodiesel. The fuel injection and combustion characteristics of fresh and aged biodiesels were similar at all the load conditions. Both fresh and aged biodiesels produced higher oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and lower smoke emissions compared to diesel.

Experimental Investigations on the Effects of Water Injection in a Light-Duty Diesel Engine Operated with Biodiesel Fuel

In-cylinder emission control methods for simultaneous reduction of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) are gaining attention due to stringent emission targets and the higher cost of after-treatment systems. In addition, there is a renewed interest in using carbon-neutral biodiesel due to global warming concerns with fossil diesel. The bi-directional NOx-PM trade-off is reduced to a unidirectional higher NOx emission problem with biodiesel. The effect of water injection with biodiesel with low water quantities is relatively unexplored and is attempted in this investigation to mitigate higher NOx emissions. The water concentrations are maintained at 3, 6, and 9% relative to fuel mass by varying the pulse width of a low-pressure port fuel injector. Considering the corrosive effects of water at higher concentrations, they are maintained below 10% in the present work.

Evaporation Characteristics of Fuels for Low Temperature Combustion Engine Applications

The research on reducing emissions from automotive engines through modifications in the combustion mode and the fuel type is gaining momentum because of the increasing contribution to global warming by the transportation sector. The combustion and emission formation in the advanced low temperature combustion (LTC) engine strategies are susceptible to fuel molecular composition and properties. Ignition timing in LTC strategies is primarily controlled by fuel composition and associated chemical kinetics. Thus, tailoring of fuel properties is required to address the limitations of LTC in terms of lack of control on ignition timing and narrow engine operating load range. Utilizing fuel blends and additives such as nanoparticles is a promising approach to achieving targeted fuel property. An improved understanding of fundamental processes, including fuel evaporation, is required due to its role in fuel-air mixing and emission formation in LTC.

New Concept PFI-Atomizer Fueling System in a Small Single Cylinder SI Engine

This paper presents results from tests using a fuel injection system which uses an ultrasonic atomizer paired with a port fuel injector (PFI). This concept was tested on a four stroke 200 cc spark-ignited two-wheeler engine. A throttle body with a PFI mounted on it was added to the air intake path of the engine, replacing the conventional carburetor. The ultrasonic disc was mounted in such a way, that the injected fuel from the PFI, falls directly on the face of the disc. The atomizer and the PFI were timed and synchronized appropriately using an Arduino® microcontroller, to promote atomization and vaporization of the fuel injected. The atomizer disc was excited using a high frequency oscillator circuit. The engine could be tested at various speeds and loads, corresponding to points which lie on the local drive duty cycle. The engine test results showed improvement in the engine exhaust emissions.

A Holistic Approach to Develop a Common Rail Single Cylinder Diesel Engine for Bharat Stage VI Emission Legislation

The upcoming Bharat Stage VI (BS VI) emission legislation has put enormous pressure on the future of small diesel engines which are widely used in the Indian market. The present work investigates the emission reduction potential of a common rail direct injection single cylinder diesel engine by adopting a holistic approach of lowering the compression ratio, boosting the intake air and down-speeding the engine. Experimental investigations were conducted across the entire operating map of a mass-production, light-duty diesel engine to examine the benefits of the proposed approach and the results are quantified for the modified Indian drive cycle (MIDC). By reducing the compression ratio from 18:1 to 14:1, the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and soot emissions are reduced by 40% and 75% respectively. However, a significant penalty in fuel economy, unburned hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are observed with the reduced compression ratio.

Homogeneous Charge with Direct Multi-Pulse Injection - A Promising High Efficiency and Clean Combustion Strategy for Diesel Engines

Extensive experimental investigations done over a decade in different engine types demonstrated the capability of achieving high efficiency along with low levels of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and soot emissions with low temperature combustion (LTC) modes. However, the commercial application of LTC strategies requires several challenges to be addressed, including precise ignition timing control, reducing higher unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. The lower exhaust gas temperatures with LTC operation pose severe challenges for after-treatment control systems. Among the available LTC strategies, Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) has emerged as the most promising strategy due to better ignition timing control with higher thermal efficiency. Nevertheless, the complexity of engine system hardware due to the dual fuel injection system and associated controls, high HC and CO emissions are the major limiting factors in RCCI.

Effect of Injection Parameters on the Premixed Charge Compression Ignition Combustion in a Small-Bore Light Duty Diesel Engine - A CFD Study

Premixed charged compression ignition (PCCI) is a promising low temperature combustion strategy for achieving a simultaneous reduction of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and soot emissions in diesel engines. However, early direct injection results in a significant penalty in fuel economy, high unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, especially in small-bore diesel engines. In the present work, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) investigations are carried out in a small-bore diesel engine using a commercial CFD software, CONVERGE. The computational models are validated with experimental results at two different load conditions, 20% and 40% of rated load. The validated models are used to carry out parametric investigations on the effects of fuel injection parameters, namely the start of fuel injection timing, injection pressure, and spray cone angle on PCCI combustion.

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Models to Predict Cetane Number of Different Biodiesels and Their Blends

The ignition quality of a fuel is described by its cetane number. Experimental methods used to determine cetane number employ Co-operative fuel research (CFR) engine and Ignition quality tester (IQT) which are expensive, have less repeatability and require skilled operation, and hence least preferred. There are many prediction models reported, which involve number of double bonds and number of carbon atoms whose determination is not direct. Using models that relate biodiesel composition to its cetane number is limited by the range of esters involved. Hence, a model to predict cetane number of biodiesels that addresses the limitations of the existing models, without ignoring the influence of factors such as degree of unsaturation and number of carbon atoms, is needed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) could be one such method.

Experimental Investigation of Combustion Stability and Particle Emission from CNG/Diesel RCCI Engine

This paper presents the experimental investigation of combustion stability and nano-particle emissions from the CNG-diesel RCCI engine. A modified automotive diesel engine is used to operate in RCCI combustion mode. An open ECU is used to control the low and high reactivity fuel injection events. The engine is tested for fixed engine speed and two different engine load conditions. The tests performed for various port-injected CNG masses and diesel injection timings, including single and double diesel injection strategy. Several consecutive engine cycles are recorded using in-cylinder combustion pressure measurement system. Statistical and return map techniques are used to investigate the combustion stability in the CNG-diesel RCCI engine. Differential mobility spectrometer is used for the measurement of particle number concentration and particle-size and number distribution. It is found that advanced diesel injection timing leading to higher cyclic combustion variations.

A Computational Study on the Effect of Injector Location on the Performance of a Small Spark-Ignition Engine Modified to Operate under the Direct-Injection Mode

In a direct-injection (DI) engine, charge motion and mixture preparation are among the most important factors deciding the performance and emissions. This work was focused on studying the effect of injector positioning on fuel-air mixture preparation and fuel impingement on in-cylinder surfaces during the homogeneous mode of operation in a naturally aspirated, small bore, 0.2 l, light-duty, air-cooled, four-stroke, spark-ignition engine modified to operate under the DI mode. A commercially available, six-hole, solenoid-operated injector was used. Two injector locations were identified based on the availability of the space on the cylinder head. One location yielded the spray-guided (SG) configuration, with one of the spray plumes targeted towards the spark plug. In the second location, the spray plumes were targeted towards the piston top in a wall-guided (WG) configuration so as to minimize the impingement of fuel on the liner.

Influence of ingredients in this multi-ingredient (generally 10-25 in different proportions) system on performance properties, however, is still not thoroughly researched area because of complexity involved and needs intensive efforts to understand this aspect. Graphite is one of the most important and almost inevitable ingredients in friction materials. A wide variety of graphite varying in origin, particle size, crystallinity, thermal conductivity etc. is used by the industry. An in-depth and systematic study on the influence of size of graphite on tribo-performance, however, is not available.

Studies on Performance and Exhaust Emissions of a CI Engine Operating on Diesel and Diesel Biodiesel Blends at Different Injection Pressures and Injection Timings

The effect of variation in injection pressure and Injection timing on the performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a direct injection, naturally aspirated Diesel engine operating on Diesel and Diesel-Biodiesel Blends were studied. A three-way factorial design consisting of four levels of injection pressure (150,210, 265,320 bar), four levels of injection timing (19° btdc, 21.5° btdc, 26° btdc, and 30.5° btdc) and five different fuel types (D100, B10, B20, B40, and B60) were employed in this test. The experimental analysis shows that when operating with Linseed Oil Methyl Ester-Diesel blends, we could increase the injection pressure by about 25% over the normal value of 20MPa. The engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics of the engine operating on the ester fuels at advanced injection timing were better than when operating at increased injection pressure.

Experimental Evaluation of Mahua based Biodiesel as Supplementary Diesel Fuel

Biodiesel developed from non- edible seeds grown in the wasteland in India can be very effectively utilized in the existing diesel engines used for various applications. This paper presents the results of investigations carried out in studying the fuel properties of mahua oil methyl ester (MOME) and its blend with diesel from 20% to 80% by volume. These properties were found to be comparable to diesel and confirming to both the American and Indian standards. The performance of mahua biodiesel (MOME) and its blend with diesel in a Kirloskar DAF8 engine has been observed. The addition of MOME to diesel fuel has significantly reduced CO, UBHC and smoke emissions but increases the NOx emission slightly. The reductions in exhaust emissions could help in controlling air pollution. The results show that no significant power reduction in the engine operation when operated with blends of MOME and diesel fuel.

Experimental Study of Variation between Quasi-static and Dynamic Load Deformation Properties of Bovine Medial Collateral Ligaments

In a significant number of automobile crashes involving pedestrians, the ligaments which control the stability of the knee, often get severely loaded. In lateral impact on knee during automotive crashes, varus-valgus motion results in failure of ligament by avulsion or by rupture in the middle region It is known that properties vary in different regions of the ligament. Experimental measurement of tensile load-elongation behavior of the middle region of bovine medial collateral ligament at strain rates of 10−4 /s to 160/s are reported here. The results show that the stress-strain behavior is linear under quasi-static loading whereas it is nonlinear and strain rate sensitive in dynamic loading conditions.

CFD Analysis of Flow through a Gerotor Oil Pump

Increasing the efficiency of engine auxiliary systems have become a challenge. Oil pump, identified for this study, is one such engine system which is used for lubrication of engine parts. To achieve higher efficiencies, there is a need for math-based analysis and design. This can be achieved by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The main aim of this paper is to simulate the flow through Gerotor Oil pump using Computational Fluid Dynamics. A 3D model of the entire flow domain is created and meshed in preprocessor GAMBIT. The mesh for various pressure outlet conditions is exported to FLUENT solver for analysis. The predicted results are validated with the experimental results. The comparison shows that the CFD predictions are in good agreement with experimental results. In particular, such a simulation offers a scope for visualizing the flow through the Gerotor oil pump.

Experimental Investigation on the Use of Water Diesel Emulsion with Oxygen Enriched Air in a DI Diesel Engine

A single cylinder, direct injection diesel engine was run on water diesel emulsion at a constant speed of 1500 rpm under variable load conditions. Water to diesel ratio of 0.4 on the mass basis was used. Tests indicated a considerable reduction in smoke and NO levels. This was accompanied by an increase in brake thermal efficiency at high outputs. HC & CO levels, ignition delay and rate of pressure rise went up. The heat release rate in the premixed burn period was higher. When the oxygen concentration in the intake air was enhanced in steps up to 25% along with the use of water diesel emulsion, the brake thermal efficiency was improved and there was a further reduction in the smoke level. HC and CO levels also dropped. NO emission went up due to increased temperature and oxygen availability. An oxygen concentration of 24% by volume was optimal as the NO levels were near about base diesel values.

Rollover stability was analyzed through simulating Increasing Steer, NHTSA J Turn, and Road Edge Recovery maneuvers.

Experimental Investigations on Three Different Methods of Using 100% Methanol in a Low Heat Rejection Engine

As alternate fuels, ethyl and methyl alcohols stand out because of the feasibility of producing them in bulk from plentifully available raw materials. In the present work, methanol is used as the only fuel, in a Low Heat Rejection(LHR) engine by adapting three different methods. In the first method, methanol as the sole fuel was used in the LHR engine with a ceramic glowplug and in the second spark plug assistance was used to initiate combustion of the injected methanol. In the third method, methanol was used as the sole fuel in a LHR engine by a new method in which part of the methanol fuel was inducted through a heated inlet manifold using a carburetor and another part of methanol (with 1% castor oil for lubrication) was injected through the normal injector. With inducted methanol air charge temperature at 70 C and above the engine operated smoothly.
