Reliability and Cost Trade-Off Analysis of a Microgrid

Optimizing the trade-off between reliability and cost of operating a microgrid, including vehicles as both loads and sources, can be a challenge. Optimal energy management is crucial to develop strategies to improve the efficiency and reliability of microgrids, as well as new communication networks to support optimal and reliable operation. Prior approaches modeled the grid using MATLAB, but did not include the detailed physics of loads and sources, and therefore missed the transient effects that are present in real-time operation of a microgrid. This article discusses the implementation of a physics-based detailed microgrid model including a diesel generator, wind turbine, photovoltaic array, and utility. All elements are modeled as sources in Simulink. Various loads are also implemented including an asynchronous motor. We show how a central control algorithm optimizes the microgrid by trying to maximize reliability while reducing operational cost.

A Group-Based Space-Filling Design of Experiments Algorithm

Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is an important tool routinely used to simulate complex engineering systems. Virtual simulations enhance engineering insight into prospective designs and potential design issues and can limit the need for expensive engineering prototypes. For complex engineering systems, however, the effectiveness of virtual simulations is often hindered by excessive computational cost. To minimize the cost of running expensive computer simulations, approximate models of the original model (often called surrogate models or metamodels) can provide sufficient accuracy at a lower computing overhead compared to repeated runs of a full simulation. Metamodel accuracy improves if constructed using space-filling designs of experiments (DOEs). The latter provide a collection of sample points in the design space preferably covering the entire space.

Reanalysis of Linear Dynamic Systems using Modified Combined Approximations with Frequency Shifts

Weight reduction is very important in automotive design because of stringent demand on fuel economy. Structural optimization of dynamic systems using finite element (FE) analysis plays an important role in reducing weight while simultaneously delivering a product that meets all functional requirements for durability, crash and NVH. With advancing computer technology, the demand for solving large FE models has grown. Optimization is however costly due to repeated full-order analyses. Reanalysis methods can be used in structural vibrations to reduce the analysis cost from repeated eigenvalue analyses for both deterministic and probabilistic problems. Several reanalysis techniques have been introduced over the years including Parametric Reduced Order Modeling (PROM), Combined Approximations (CA) and the Epsilon algorithm, among others.

Computational Efficiency Improvements in Topography Optimization Using Reanalysis

To improve fuel economy, there is a trend in automotive industry to use light weight, high strength materials. Automotive body structures are composed of several panels which must be downsized to reduce weight. Because this affects NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) performance, engineers are challenged to recover the lost panel stiffness from down-gaging in order to improve the structure borne noise transmitted through the lightweight panels in the frequency range of 100-300 Hz where most of the booming and low medium frequency noise occurs. The loss in performance can be recovered by optimized panel geometry using beading or damping treatment. Topography optimization is a special class of shape optimization for changing sheet metal shapes by introducing beads. A large number of design variables can be handled and the process is easy to setup in commercial codes. However, optimization methods are computationally intensive because of repeated full-order analyses.

Pedestrian Orientation Estimation Using CNN and Depth Camera

This work presents a method for estimating human body orientation using a combination of convolutional neural network (CNN) and stereo camera in real time. The approach uses the CNN model to predict certain human body keypoints then transforms these points into a 3D space using the stereo vision system to estimate the body orientations. The CNN module is trained to estimate the shoulders, the neck and the nose positions, detecting of three points is required to confirm human detection and provided enough data to translate the points into 3D space.

Offset Algorithm for Compound Angle Machining of Parts when Tool Motion is Unrestricted in Space

Although the performance of CNC machines is accurate, unavoidable human errors at the part loading position have serious repercussions on engine performance. In the present paper the authors would like to develop an algorithm for error compensation when the tool movement is unrestricted in space. The new solution algorithm will be in terms of the known initial system variables such as the part loading errors, drill tool inclinations, location of spindle etc. This modified paper employs the same principles of inverse kinematics as done in the earlier paper wherein a faulty compound-hole angle axis in space caused by the translational and rotational errors at the part loading position is identified with an imaginary true axis in space by enforcing identity through a modified machine axes taking into effect inclination of the drill tool in space. In the absence of any specific application, this algorithm is verified on Solid Works a commercial CAD tool and found to be correct.

Scuffing Test Rig for Piston Wrist Pin and Pin Bore

In practice, the piston wrist pin is either fixed to the connecting rod or floats between the connecting rod and the piston. The tribological behavior of fixed wrist pins have been studied by several researchers, however there have been few studies done on the floating wrist pin. A new bench rig has been designed and constructed to investigate the tribological behavior between floating pins and pin bore bearings. The experiments were run using both fixed pins and floating pins under the same working conditions. It was found that for fixed pins there was severe damage on the pin bore in a very short time (5 minutes) and material transfer occurs between the wrist pin and pin bore; however, for the floating pin, even after a long testing time (60 minutes) there was minimal surface damage on either the pin bore or wrist pin.

Driver Visual Focus of Attention Estimation in Autonomous Vehicles

An existing challenge in current state-of-the-art autonomous vehicles is the process of safely transferring control from autonomous driving mode to manual mode because the driver may be distracted with secondary tasks. Such distractions may impair a driver’s situational awareness of the driving environment which will lead to fatal outcomes during a handover. Current state-of-the-art vehicles notify a user of an imminent handover via auditory, visual, and physical alerts but are unable to improve a driver’s situational awareness before a handover is executed. The overall goal of our research team is to address the challenge of providing a driver with relevant information to regain situational awareness of the driving task. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to estimating a driver’s visual focus of attention using a 2D RGB camera as input to a Multi-Input Convolutional Neural Network with shared weights. The system was validated in a realistic driving scenario.

Optimal Idle Speed Control of an Automotive Engine

An optimal idle speed control (ISC) system for an automotive engine is introduced in this paper. The system is based on a non-linear model including time delay. This model is linearized at the nominal operating point. The effect of the time delay on control is compensated by prediction. This methodology is applied to a Chrysler 2.0 liter 4-cylinder SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) engine. All of the unknown parameters of the model are identified by using the normal operating data from the test engine. Based on these identified parameters, an optimal controller was designed and implemented using a rapid prototyping system. Numerous experiments of the optimal controller were carried out at the Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The performance was compared to that of the existing controller. The results showed that the optimal controller has the capability to effectively control the engine idle speed under a variety of accessory loads and disturbances.

Transverse Vibration of a Composite Shaft

The advantages of having higher stiffness to weight ratio and strength to weigh ratio that composite materials have resulted in an increased interest in them. In automotive engineering, the weight savings has positive impacts on other attributes like fuel economy and possible noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The driveline of an automotive system can be a target for possible use of composite materials. The design of the driveshaft of an automotive system is primarily driven by its natural frequency. This paper presents an exact solution for the vibration of a composite driveshaft with intermediate joints. The joint is modeled as a frictionless internal hinge. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is used. Lumped masses are placed on each side of the joint to represent the joint mass. Equations of motion are developed using the appropriate boundary conditions and then solved exactly.

Application of cervical spine range of motion data and related anthropometric measures of the head and neck include physical therapy, product design, and computational modeling. This study utilized the Cervical Range of Motion device (CROM) to define the normal range of motion of the cervical spine for subjects five (5) through ten (10) years of age. And, the data was collected and analyzed with respect to anatomical measures such as head circumference, face height, neck length, and neck circumference. This study correlates these static anthropometric measures to the kinematic measurement of head flexion, extension, lateral extension, and rotation.

Design and Analysis of an Acrylic Front of a Novel Mechanical Highway Billboard

Billboards are an effective instrument of advertisement at areas with high traffic flow such as alongside highways. They provide information to drivers for food, fuel, lodging, attractions, etc. A novel mechanical billboard has been conceived recently which contains rolling tubes to alternate as many as twelve printed signs. It has the advantages of both flexibility and cost-effectiveness. A container is built to protect the mechanism from the weather elements. To allow the displayed messages to be visible, a transparent acrylic front is installed. Due to its mechanical properties, it is a challenging task in designing a functional acrylic front. A reinforcement is selected to counter the weak flexural rigidity of the front during winds. On the other hand, the reinforced acrylic front must maintain sufficient visibility.

Modeling and Optimization of Vehicle Drivetrain Dynamic Performance Considering Uncertainty

A vehicle drivetrain is designed to meet specific vehicle performance criteria which usually involve trade-offs among conflicting performance measures. This paper describes a methodology to optimize the drivetrain design including the axle ratio, transmission shift points and transmission shift ratios considering uncertainty. A complete vehicle dynamic model is developed using the bond graph method. The model includes the vehicle, engine, transmission, torque converter, driveline, and transmission controller. An equivalent MATLAB Simulink model is also developed in order to carry out the nonlinear dynamic analysis efficiently. A deterministic optimization is first performed to determine the optimum design in terms of fuel economy, without considering variations or uncertainties. Subsequently, a Reliability-Based Design Optimization is carried out to find the optimum design in the presence of uncertainty.

A Rigid Shearographic Endosscopic for Applications

Shearography has been proved to be highly effective for nondestructive testing (NDT), especially for NDT of composite materials used in the automotive and aerospace engineering. While its application in material testing and material research has already achieved more and more acceptance in research and industry, its applications are mainly limited to the inspection and testing of an object surface which can directly be observed by a shearographic camera. If the reflected light of the surface, which has to be examined, can’t reach the shearographic camera there is still no inspection possible. This paper presents the development of a rigid shearographic endoscope. The development enabled shearographic inspection on both external and internal surfaces of objects.

Quantum Explanations for Interference Effects in Engineering Decision Making

Engineering practice routinely involves decision making under uncertainty. Much of this decision making entails reconciling multiple pieces of information to form a suitable model of uncertainty. As more information is collected, one expectedly makes better and better decisions. However, conditional probability assessments made by human decision makers, as new information arrives does not always follow expected trends and instead exhibits inconsistencies. Understanding them is necessary for a better modeling of the cognitive processes taking place in their mind, whether it be the designer or the end-user. Doing so can result in better products and product features. Quantum probability has been used in the literature to explain many commonly observed deviations from the classical probability such as: question order effect, response replicability effect, Machina and Ellsberg paradoxes and the effect of positive and negative interference between events.

Human Body Orientation from 2D Images

This work presents a method to estimate the human body orientation using 2D images from a person view; the challenge comes from the variety of human body poses and appearances. The method utilizes OpenPose neural network as a human pose detector module and depth sensing module. The modules work together to extract the body orientation from 2D stereo images. OpenPose is proven to be efficient in detecting human body joints, defined by COCO dataset, OpenPose can detect the visible body joints without being affected by backgrounds or other challenging factors. Adding the depth data for each point can produce rich information to the process of 3D construction for the detected humans. This 3D point’s setup can tell more about the body orientation and walking direction for example. The depth module used in this work is the ZED camera stereo system which uses CUDA for high performance depth computation.

Modelling of a Discrete Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) System for Fuel Consumption Evaluation - Part 1: Model Development

Given increasingly stringent emission targets, engine efficiency has become of foremost importance. While increasing engine compression ratio can lead to efficiency gains, it also leads to higher in-cylinder pressure and temperatures, thus increasing the risk of knock. One potential solution is the use of a Variable Compression Ratio system, which is capable of exploiting the advantages coming from high compression ratio while limiting its drawbacks by operating at low engine loads with a high compression ratio, and at high loads with a low compression ratio, where knock could pose a significant threat. This paper describes the design of a model for the evaluation of fuel consumption for an engine equipped with a VCR system over representative drive cycles. The model takes as inputs; a switching time for the VCR system, the vehicle characteristics, engine performance maps corresponding to two different compression ratios, and a drive cycle.

Variable Compression Ratio systems are an increasingly attractive solution for car manufacturers in order to reduce vehicle fuel consumption. By having the capability to operate with a range of compression ratios, engine efficiency can be significantly increased by operating with a high compression ratio at low loads, where the engine is normally not knock-limited, and with a low compression ratio at high load, where the engine is more prone to knock. In this way, engine efficiency can be maximized without sacrificing performance. This study aims to analyze how the effectiveness of a VCR system is affected by various powertrain and vehicle parameters. By using a Matlab model of a VCR system developed in Part 1 of this work, the influence of the vehicle characteristics, the drive cycle, and of the number of stages used in the VCR system was studied.

Real Time 2D Pose Estimation for Pedestrian Path Estimation Using GPU Computing

Future fully autonomous and partially autonomous cars equipped with Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) should assure safety for the pedestrian. One of the critical tasks is to determine if the pedestrian is crossing the road in the path of the ego-vehicle, in order to issue the required alerts for the driver or even safety breaking action. In this paper, we investigate the use of 2D pose estimators to determine the direction and speed of the pedestrian crossing the road in front of a vehicle. Pose estimation of body parts, such as right eye, left knee, right foot, etc… is used for determining the pedestrian orientation while tracking these key points between frames is used to determine the pedestrian speed. The pedestrian orientation and speed are the two required elements for the basic path estimation.
