A Personalized Deep Learning Approach for Trajectory Prediction of Connected Vehicles

Forecasting the motion of the leading vehicle is a critical task for connected autonomous vehicles as it provides an efficient way to model the leading-following vehicle behavior and analyze the interactions. In this study, a personalized time-series modeling approach for leading vehicle trajectory prediction considering different driving styles is proposed. The method enables a precise, personalized trajectory prediction for leading vehicles with limited inter-vehicle communication signals, such as vehicle speed, acceleration, space headway, and time headway of the front vehicles. Based on the learning nature of human beings that a human always tries to solve problems based on grouping and similar experience, three different driving styles are first recognized based on an unsupervised clustering with a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM).

An Efficient Lift Control Technique in Electro-hydraulic Camless Valvetrain Using Variable Speed Hydraulic Pump

Significant improvement in fuel consumption, torque delivery and emission could be achieved through flexible control of the valve timings, duration and lift. In most existing electro-hydraulic variable valve actuation systems, the desired valve lift within every engine cycle is achieved by accurately controlling of the solenoid-valve opening interval; however, due to slow response time, precision control of these valves is difficult particularly during higher engine speeds. In this paper a new lift control strategy is proposed based on the hydraulic supply pressure and flow control. In this method, in order to control the peak valve lift, the hydraulic pump speed is precisely controlled using a two-input gearbox mechanism. This eliminates the need for precision control of the solenoid valves opening interval within every cycle.

1997 Propane Vehicle Challenge Design Strategy -University of Waterloo

The conversion design strategy, and emissions and performance results for a dedicated propane, vapour injected, 1995 Dodge Dakota truck are reported. Data is obtained from the University of Waterloo entry in the 1997 Propane Vehicle Challenge. A key feature of the design strategy is its focus on testing and emissions while preserving low engine speed power for drivability. Major changes to the Dakota truck included the following: installation of a custom shaped fuel tank, inclusion of a fuel temperature control module, addition of a vaporizer and a fuel delivery metering unit, installation of a custom vapour distribution manifold, addition of an equivalence ratio electronic controller, inclusion of a wide range oxygen sensor, addition of an exhaust gas recirculation cooler and installation of thermal insulation on the exhaust system. A competition provided natural gas catalyst was used.

Implementation and Optimization of a Fuel Cell Hybrid Powertrain

A fuel cell hybrid powertrain design is implemented and optimized by the University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team for the ChallengeX competition. A comprehensive set of bench-top and in-vehicle validation results are used to generate accurate fuel cell vehicle models for SIL/HIL control strategy testing and tuning. The vehicle is brought to a “99% buy-off” level of production readiness, and a detailed crashworthiness analysis is performed. The vehicle performance is compared to Vehicle Technical Specifications (VTS).

This paper investigates the application of standard formability testing results for aluminum alloy tailor welded blanks (TWB) to full size stampings. The limit strains obtained from formability testing are compared to measured strains in a larger scale part. The measured strains in the full scale part are also compared to predictions from finite element simulation.

Real-Time Robust Lane Marking Detection and Tracking for Degraded Lane Markings

Robust lane marking detection remains a challenge, particularly in temperate climates where markings degrade rapidly due to winter conditions and snow removal efforts. In previous work, dynamic Bayesian networks with heuristic features were used with the feature distributions trained using semi-supervised expectation maximization, which greatly reduced sensitivity to initialization. This work has been extended in three important respects. First, the tracking formulation used in previous work has been corrected to prevent false positives in situations where only poor RANSAC hypotheses were generated. Second, the null hypothesis is reformulated to guarantee that detected hypotheses satisfy a minimum likelihood. Third, the computational requirements have been greatly reduced by computing an upper bound on the marginal likelihood of all part hypotheses upon generation and rejecting parts with an upper bound less likely than the null hypothesis.

Recognizing Driver Braking Intention with Vehicle Data Using Unsupervised Learning Methods

Recently, the development of braking assistance system has largely benefit the safety of both driver and pedestrians. A robust prediction and detection of driver braking intention will enable driving assistance system response to traffic situation correctly and improve the driving experience of intelligent vehicles. In this paper, two types unsupervised clustering methods are used to build a driver braking intention predictor. Unsupervised machine learning algorithms has been widely used in clustering and pattern mining in previous researches. The proposed unsupervised learning algorithms can accurately recognize the braking maneuver based on vehicle data captured with CAN bus. The braking maneuver along with other driving maneuvers such as normal driving will be clustered and the results from different algorithms which are K-means and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) will be compared.

Control Analysis for Efficiency Optimization of a High Performance Hybrid Electric Vehicle with Both Pre and Post Transmission Motors

The drive to improve and optimize hybrid vehicle performance is increasing with the growth of the market. With this market growth, the automotive industry has recognized a need to train and educate the next generation of engineers in hybrid vehicle design. The University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team (UWAFT), as part of the EcoCAR 3 competition, has developed a control strategy for a novel parallel-split hybrid architecture. This architecture features an engine, transmission and two electric motors; one pre-transmission motor and one post-transmission motor. The control strategy operates these powertrain components in a series, parallel, and all electric power flow, switching between these strategies to optimize the energy efficiency of the vehicle. Control strategies for these three power flows are compared through optimization of efficiencies within the powertrain.

The automobile industry has been undergoing a transition from fossil fuels to a low emission platform due to stricter environmental policies and energy security considerations. Electric vehicles, powered by lithium-ion batteries, have started to attain a noticeable market share recently due to their stable performance and maturity as a technology. However, electric vehicles continue to suffer from two disadvantages that have limited widespread adoption: charging time and energy density. To mitigate these challenges, vehicle Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have developed different vehicle architectures to extend the vehicle range. This work seeks to compare various powertrains, including: combined power battery electric vehicles (BEV) (zinc-air and lithium-ion battery), zero emission fuel cell vehicles (FCV)), conventional gasoline powered vehicles (baseline internal combustion vehicle), and ICE engine extended range hybrid electric vehicle.

Volumetric Tire Models for Longitudinal Vehicle Dynamics Simulations

Dynamic modelling of the contact between the tires of automobiles and the road surface is crucial for accurate and effective vehicle dynamic simulation and the development of various driving controllers. Furthermore, an accurate prediction of the rolling resistance is needed for powertrain controllers and controllers designed to reduce fuel consumption and engine emissions. Existing models of tires include physics-based analytical models, finite element based models, black box models, and data driven empirical models. The main issue with these approaches is that none of these models offer the balance between accuracy of simulation and computational cost that is required for the model-based development cycle. To address this issue, we present a volumetric approach to model the forces/moments between the tire and the road for vehicle dynamic simulations.

Efficient Electro-Thermal Model for Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries

The development of a comprehensive battery simulator is essential for future improvements in the durability, performance and service life of lithium-ion batteries. Although simulations can never replace actual experimental data, they can still be used to provide valuable insights into the performance of the battery, especially under different operating conditions. In addition, a single-cell model can be easily extended to the pack level and can be used in the optimization of a battery pack. The first step in building a simulator is to create a model that can effectively capture both the voltage response and thermal behavior of the battery. Since these effects are coupled together, creating a robust simulator requires modeling both components. This paper will develop a battery simulator, where the entire battery model will be composed of four smaller submodels: a heat generation model, a thermal model, a battery parameter model and a voltage response model.

The University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team's Approach to EcoCAR 2

A series plug-in hybrid electric powertrain with all-wheel drive is designed using real-world drive cycles as part of the EcoCAR 2 competition. A stock 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is being re-engineered to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while improving consumer acceptability. Waterloo utilizes a 18.9 kWh A123 energy storage system (ESS), which powers two 105 kW TM4 traction motors. A 2.4 L LE9 General Motors coupled to a 105 kW TM4 motor provides range extending performance. Each step of the design process is discussed, including a novel approach to powertrain selection and controls requirement selection that uses real-world drive cycles. The mechanical integration and unique ESS design is also discussed.

The Application of Model-Based Design Techniques in Academic Design Projects

The objective of this paper is to help students optimize project component selection or design by detailing, through two specific examples, the University of Waterloo's Alternative Fuels Team's (UWAFT's) successful design process. UWAFT successfully designed a fuel cell powered vehicle for the ChallengeX student engineering competition. The use of a formal, structured design process enabled this team to achieve great confidence in both the feasibility of their design and their ability to manifest the design. This design process is model-based whereby a parameterized software model is created. This paper hopefully assists students to overcome a common reluctance to implementing a model-based design process. After a component is constructed and tested, students can update their software model, which can help them assess the strength of their design.

Modelling Diesel Engine Natural Gas Injection: Injector/Cylinder Boundary Conditions

Direct injected natural gas diesel engines are currently being developed. Numerical analyses results are presented for 20.0 MPa (≈ 3000 psia; 200 atm), 444 K, natural gas injection into 4.0 MPa cylinder air where the ambient turbulence field is representative of diesel engines. Two very important non-intuitive, observations are made. First, the seemingly reasonable spatially uniform velocity profile currently used at the injector exit is not appropriate, rather a double-hump profile is correct. Second, a spatially uniform, injector exit, temperature profile results in local temperature overestimates as large as 300 K. Considering the strong role of temperature on chemical kinetics, this second observation may have profound implications on the validity of conclusions reached using uniform exit profiles.

Expansion Devices for R-744 MAC Units

In mobile R-744 A/C units mechanical expansion devices (e.g. orifice tubes) or electronic valves (e.g. PWM-valves) can be used. Besides the costs, aspects like coefficient of performance (COP), cooling capacity or control behavior - especially for extreme conditions - influence the choice of the valve type. This paper will present a comparison between an ideal electronic valve and a two stage mechanical orifice tube under full load and part load conditions. The influence of the expansion valve on COP and cooling capacity in different ambient conditions can be sufficiently described with steady-state simulations. The simulation tools used for this work are based on Modelica/Dymola. The simulation results show that for European climate conditions the use of two-stage orifices might increase fuel consumption.

Optimal Cooperative Path Planning Considering Driving Intention for Shared Control

This paper presents an optimal cooperative path planning method considering driver’s driving intention for shared control to address target path conflicts during the driver-automation interaction by using the convex optimization technique based on the natural cubic spline. The optimal path criteria (e.g. the optimal curvature, the optimal heading angle) are formulated as quadratic forms using the natural cubic spline, and the initial cooperative path profiles of the cooperative path in the Frenet-based coordinate system are induced by considering the driver’s lane-changing intention recognized by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method. Then, the optimal cooperative path could be obtained by the convex optimization techniques. The noncooperative game theory is adopted to model the driver-automation interaction in this shared control framework, where the Nash equilibrium solution is derived by the model predictive control (MPC) approach.

Numerical Prediction of the Autoignition Delay in a Diesel-Like Environment by the Conditional Moment Closure Model

The autoignition delay of a turbulent methane jet in a Diesel-like environment is calculated by the conditional moment closure(CMC) model. Methane is injected into hot air in a constant volume chamber under various temperatures and pressures. Detailed chemical reaction mechanisms are implemented with turbulence-chemistry interaction treated by the first order CMC. The CMC model solves the conditional mean species mass fraction and temperature equations with the source term given in terms of the conditional mean quantities. The flow and mixing field are calculated by the transient SIMPLE algorithm with the k -ε model and the assumed beta function pdf. The CMC equations are solved by the fractional step method which sequentially treats the transport and chemical reaction terms in each time step. The predictions in quiescent homogeneous mixture are presented to evaluate the effects of turbulence in jet ignition.

Investigations on the Determination of the Service Methane Number of LNG

LNG is a fuel that is under increasing discussion for transport purposes. It differs from CNG because it often has a higher concentration of hydrocarbons > C4. This affects knocking in a negative way. The knocking properties of a gaseous fuel are characterized by the Methane Number (MN) which is defined as the methane content in a mixture of methane and hydrogen which has the same knocking properties as the gas under investigation. It was defined by AVL in the late 1960s. In contrast to the Octane or Cetane Number there is no standardized measurement procedure for the MN, because the equipment AVL used was unique and does not exist anymore. But AVL created a calculation methodology based on the large amount of data they had measured. There are several software implementations of this methodology. Further there are other algorithms which are not based on the AVL data. If an MN is measured on an arbitrary engine the result is called a Service Methane Number (SMN).

Impact of Intake Port Water Injection Timing on Mitigating the Tradeoff between Performance and NOx Emissions for a Naturally Aspired Micro-CHP-Engine

Small natural gas cogeneration engines usually operate with lean mixture and late combustion phasing to comply with NOx emission standards, leading to significant losses in engine efficiency. Owing to water evaporation heat and high specific heat capacity of the water vapor, leads the water injection to cooling the combustion chamber charge, which enables earlier combustion phasing, higher compression ratio and thus higher engine efficiency. Therefore, water injection enables mitigating the tradeoff between NOx emissions and engine performance, without loss in engine efficiency. The intake port injection represents, because of the low required injection pressure and the simple injector integration, a cost-effective way to introduce water into the engine. Hence, the purpose of this work is to adapt the intake port water injection timing to the charge mixture flow conditions in the intake port.

Investigations of the Emissions of Fuels with different Compositions and Renewable Fuel Components in a GDI Engine

Investigations were performed, in which fuels and fuel components were compared regarding gaseous as well as particulate number (PN) emissions. The focus on the selection of the fuel components was set on the possibility of renewable production, which lead to Ethanol, as the classic bio-fuel, Isopropanol, Isobutanol and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). As fuels, a Euro 6 (EU6) reference fuel, an anti-spark-fouling (ASF) fuel, a European Super Plus (RON 98) in-field fuel and a potentially completely renewable fuel, which was designed by Porsche AG (named POSYN), were chosen. The composition of the fuels differs significantly which results in large differences in the exhaust gas emissions. The fuels, except ASF, are compliant with the European fuel standard EN 228.The experiments chosen were a variation of the start of injection (SOI) at different load points at a constant engine speed of 2000 rpm, amongst others.
