Results of the Particulate Contamination Control Trade Study for Space Suit Life Support Development

As the United States makes plans to return astronauts to the moon and eventually send them on to Mars, designing the most effective, efficient, and robust spacesuit life support system that will operate successfully in dusty environments is vital. Some knowledge has been acquired regarding the contaminants and level of infiltration that can be expected from lunar and Mars dust, however, risk mitigation strategies and filtration designs that will prevent contamination within a spacesuit life support system are yet undefined. A trade study was therefore initiated to identify and address these concerns, and to develop new requirements for the Constellation spacesuit element Portable Life Support System. This trade study investigated historical methods of controlling particulate contamination in spacesuits and space vehicles, and evaluated the possibility of using commercial technologies for this application. The trade study also examined potential filtration designs.

Development and Testing of a Sorbent-Based Atmosphere Revitalization System 2008/2009

The design and evaluation of a Vacuum-Swing Adsorption (VSA) system to remove metabolic water and metabolic carbon dioxide from a spacecraft atmosphere is presented. The approach for Orion and Altair is a VSA system that removes not only 100 percent of the metabolic CO2 from the atmosphere, but also 100% of the metabolic water as well, a technology approach that has not been used in previous spacecraft life support systems. The design and development of an Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle Sorbent Based Atmosphere Revitalization system, including test articles, a facility test stand, and full-scale testing in late 2008 and early 2009 is discussed.

Thermal Simulation of Asteroid Surface Temperature and Yarkowski Effect

The thermal environment on or near the surface of the solar system bodies, such as Near Earth Orbit (NEO) asteroids has important implications on future plans for a variety of solar system explorer missions. These missions aim to study asteroids, the primitive leftover building blocks of the Solar System formation process, to understand and potentially alter the course of an object that may threaten the Earth, or to demonstrate the technology to pave the way for man's return to Earth's Moon and beyond. Previous work to determine the surface temperatures of asteroids has addressed the needs of astronomy by using the IR emission from the asteroid to determine its size. However this simulation assumes a theoretical spherical asteroid and not the complex geometries often observed. The simplification leads to inaccurate temperature prediction of details features of the asteroid surface which are of significance to vehicles and orbit prediction.

CFD Study of Ventilation and Carbon Dioxide Transport for ISS Node 2 and Attached Modules

The objective of this study is to evaluate ventilation efficiency regarding to the International Space Station (ISS) cabin ventilation during the ISS assembly mission 1J. The focus is on carbon dioxide spatial/temporal variations within the Node 2 and attached modules. An integrated model for CO2 transport analysis that combines 3D CFD modeling with the lumped parameter approach has been implemented. CO2 scrubbing from the air by means of two ISS removal systems is taken into account. It has been established that the ventilation scheme with an ISS Node 2 bypass duct reduces short-circuiting effects and provides less CO2 gradients when the Space Shuttle Orbiter is docked to the ISS. This configuration results in reduced CO2 level within the ISS cabin.

Evaluation of ANITA Air Monitoring on the International Space Station

ANITA (Analysing Interferometer for Ambient Air) is a flight experiment precursor for a permanent continuous air quality monitoring system on the ISS (International Space Station). For the safety of the crew, ANITA can detect and quantify quasi-online and simultaneously 33 gas compounds in the air with ppm or sub-ppm detection limits. The autonomous measurement system is based on FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy). The system represents a versatile air quality monitor, allowing for the first time the detection and monitoring of trace gas dynamics, with high time resolution, in a spacecraft atmosphere. ANITA operated on the ISS from September 2007 to August 2008. This paper summarises the results of ANITA's air analyses and compares results to other measurements acquired on ISS during the operational period.

Counter-Flow Silica-Titania Reactor for the Simultaneous Treatment of Air and Water Contaminated with VOCs

The photocatalytic oxidation of VOCs was investigated using a novel countercurrent flow reactor designed to enable the treatment of toluene present in the gas and the aqueous phases simultaneously. The reactor was packed with silica-titania composites commingled with plastic pall rings. Using this mixed packing style was advantageous as it resulted in a higher UV penetration throughout the reactor. The average UV intensity in the reactor was determined to be 220 μW/g irradiated TiO2. It was found that under dry conditions, the STCs had a high adsorption capacity for toluene; however, this adsorption was completely hindered by the wetting of the STCs when the two phases were flowing simultaneously. The destruction of toluene in the aqueous phase was determined to follow a linear trend as a function of the contaminant concentration.

Unique Regeneration Steps for the Sorbent-Based Atmosphere Revitalization System Designed for CO2 and H2O Removal from Spacecraft Cabins

An SBAR system for H2O and CO2 removal from spacecraft cabin air was studied both experimentally and theoretically. An emphasis was placed on its purgeless, deep vacuum regeneration step. Three evacuation steps were studied: 1) single ended depressurization (SED) through the feed end of the bed; 2) simultaneous dual ended depressurization (DED) through both ends of the bed; and 3) simultaneous triple ended depressurization (TED) through both ends of the bed and a port located at some axial position. TED resulted in a lower average bed pressure at the end of evacuation compared to DED, which, in turn caused more CO2 to be removed. An optimal third port location also existed. The use of TED should allow the SBAR bed size to be reduced.

Soot Removal from Diesel Engine Lubrication Systems

The removal of soot in the lubricating sumps of diesel engines is a formidable task, further compounded by the introduction of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Efficient removal of soot would help ensure engine durability and engine performance while increasing oil drain intervals thus reducing maintenance costs. This paper describes a method by which soot can be separated from the oil with the application of an electric field by utilizing the small electrical charge on the soot particles. The electric field is applied to a network of electrodes that support an open porous network which stabilizes the weakly bound soot cake. Significantly higher filtration efficiency was achieved as compared to mechanical particulate filtration and centrifugation. The paper also discusses the controlling conditions while detailing the performance testing at both a bench scale level and pilot scale level.

Development of a Predictive Model for Gasoline Vehicle Particulate Matter Emissions

The relationship between gasoline properties and vehicle particulate matter emissions was investigated, for the purpose of constructing a predictive model. Various chemical species were individually blended with an indolene base fuel, and the solid particulate number (PN) emissions from each blend were measured over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The results indicated that aromatics with a high boiling point and a high double bond equivalent (DBE) value tended to produce more PN emissions. However, high boiling point components with low DBE values, such as paraffins, displayed only a minor effect on PN. Upon further analysis of the test results, it was also confirmed that low vapor pressure components correlated with high PN emissions, as might be expected based on their combustion behavior. A predictive model, termed the “PM Index,” was constructed based on the weight fraction, vapor pressure, and DBE value of each component in the fuel.

Ethanol Blend Effects On Direct Injection Spark-Ignition Gasoline Vehicle Particulate Matter Emissions

Direct injection spark-ignition (DISI) gasoline engines can offer better fuel economy and higher performance over their port fuel-injected counterparts, and are now appearing increasingly in more U.S. vehicles. Small displacement, turbocharged DISI engines are likely to be used in lieu of large displacement engines, particularly in light-duty trucks and sport utility vehicles, to meet fuel economy standards for 2016. In addition to changes in gasoline engine technology, fuel composition may increase in ethanol content beyond the 10% allowed by current law due to the Renewable Fuels Standard passed as part of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA). In this study, we present the results of an emissions analysis of a U.S.-legal stoichiometric, turbocharged DISI vehicle, operating on ethanol blends, with an emphasis on detailed particulate matter (PM) characterization.

Controlling Lubricant-Derived Phosphorous Deactivation of the Three-Way Catalysts Part 2: Positive Environmental Impact of Novel ZDP Technology

Prior technical work by various OEMs and lubricant formulators has identified lubricant-derived phosphorus as a key element capable of significantly reducing the efficiency of modern emissions control systems of gasoline-powered vehicles ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ). However, measuring the exact magnitude of the detriment is not simple or straightforward exercise due to the many other sources of variation which occur as a vehicle is driven and the catalyst is aged ( 1 ). This paper, the second one in the series of publications, examines quantitative sets of results generated using various vehicle and exhaust catalyst testing methodologies designed to follow the path of lubricant-derived phosphorous transfer from oil sump to exhaust catalytic systems ( 1 ).

Lean Gasoline Engine Reductant Chemistry During Lean NOx Trap Regeneration

Lean NOx Trap (LNT) catalysts can effectively reduce NOx from lean engine exhaust. Significant research for LNTs in diesel engine applications has been performed and has led to commercialization of the technology. For lean gasoline engine applications, advanced direct injection engines have led to a renewed interest in the potential for lean gasoline vehicles and, thereby, a renewed demand for lean NOx control. To understand the gasoline-based reductant chemistry during regeneration, a BMW lean gasoline vehicle has been studied on a chassis dynamometer. Exhaust samples were collected and analyzed for key reductant species such as H₂, CO, NH₃, and hydrocarbons during transient drive cycles. The relation of the reductant species to LNT performance will be discussed. Furthermore, the challenges of NOx storage in the lean gasoline application are reviewed.

Proof-of-Principle Investigation into the Use of Custom Rapid Aging Procedures to Evaluate and Demonstrate Catalyst Durability

The application of accelerated catalyst aging procedures on an engine dynamometer test bed for the purpose of demonstrating catalyst durability is examined. A proof-of-principle approach is followed using catalysts from vehicles certified to U.S. Tier 2 Bin 4 and California SULEV 2 levels. Accelerated durability demonstration methods based upon conventional fuel cut cycles were employed to age catalysts to levels predicted by quantification of thermal catalyst bed severity on the Standard Road Cycle (SRC) relative to the fuel cut aging cycle using the Bench Aging Time (BAT) equation. Emissions deterioration on the accelerated aging cycle is compared to the automobile manufacturers' certification values and to whole vehicle emissions performance results from several different in-use vehicle fleets. The influence of technology on whole vehicle emissions levels and deterioration characteristics is also evaluated.

After the turn of the century, growing social attention has been paid to environmental concerns, especially the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and it comes down to a personal daily life concern which will affect the purchasing decision of vehicles in the future. Among all the sources of greenhouse gas emissions, the transportation industry is the primary target of reduction and almost every automotive company pours unprecedented amounts of money to reengineer the vehicle technologies for better fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emission. Besides those efforts paid for sheer improvements of genuine vehicle technologies, NISSAN testified that “connectivity” with outside servers contributed a lot to reduce fuel consumption, thus the less emission of GHG, with two major factors; 1. detouring the traffic congestions with the support of probe-based real-time traffic information and 2. providing Eco-driving advices for the better driving behavior to prompt the better usage of energy.

Due to a rapid development of air transportation there is a need for the assessment of real environmental risk related to the aircraft operation. The emission of carbon monoxide and particulate matter is still a serious threat~constituting an obstacle in the development of combustion engines. The applicable regulations related to the influence of the air transportation on the environment introduced by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) contained in JAR 34 (JAA, Joint Aviation Requirements, JAR 34, Aircraft Engine Emissions), FAR 34 (FAA, Federal Aviation Regulations, Part 34, Fuel Venting and Exhaust Emission Requirements for Turbine Engine Powered Airplanes), mostly pertain to the emission of noise and exhaust gas compounds, NOx in particular. They refer to jet engines and have stationary test procedures depending on the engine operating conditions.

Dry Drilling of Stackup Composite: Benefits of CO2 Cooling

The use of composite materials and composite stackups (CO-Ti or CO-Al) in aerospace and automotive applications has been and will continue to grow at a very high rate due to the high strength and low weight of the materials. One key problem manufacturers have using this material is the ability to efficiently drill holes through the layers to install fasteners and other components. This is especially true in stackups of CFRP and titanium due to the desire of drilling dry for the CFRP layer and the need for cooling when drilling the high strength Ti layer. By using CO2 through tool cooling, it is possible to protect both layers. Through work supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Department of Energy (DOE) it is shown that CO2 through tool cooling productivity can be significantly increased while maintaining required hole tolerances in both the composite and Ti layers. Improvements in tool life have been demonstrated when compared to either emulsion or dry drilling.

Impacts of Non-Traditional Uses of Polyurethane Foam in Automotive Applications at End of Life

Polyurethane (PU) foam is used for many automotive applications with the benefits of being lightweight, durable, and resistant to heat and noise. Applications of PU foams are increasing to include non-traditional purposes targeting consumer comfort. An example of this is the use of PU foam between the engine and engine cover of a vehicle for the purpose of noise abatement. This addition will provide a quieter ride for the consumer, however will have associated environmental impacts. The additional weight will cause an increase in fuel consumption and related emissions. More significant impacts may be realized at the end-of-life stage. Recycling PU foams presents several challenges; a lack of market for the recyclate, contamination of the foams, and lack of accessibility for removal of the material.

Potential of Several Alternative Propulsion Systems for Light Rotorcrafts Applications

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming is becoming one of the key issues of the 21st century. As a growing contributor to this phenomenon, the aeronautic transport sector has recently taken drastic measures to limit its impact on CO2 and pollutants, like the aviation industry entry in the European carbon market or the ACARE objectives. However the defined targets require major improvements in existing propulsion systems, especially on the gas generator itself. Regarding small power engines for business aviation, rotorcrafts or APU, the turboshaft is today a dominant technology, despite quite high specific fuel consumption. In this context, solutions based on Diesel Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), well known for their low specific fuel consumption, could be a relevant alternative way to meet the requirements of future legislations for low and medium power applications (under 1000kW).

Defining Environmental Indicators at Detail Design Stage as Part of an Ecodesign Strategy

Implementing Design for Environment (DfE) into the design process requires a strategic integration. Furthermore, as DfE is continuously evolving, flexible processes need to be implemented. This article focuses on the integration of DfE into an optimization framework with the objective of influencing next-generation aircraft. For this purpose, DfE and Structures groups are developing together a set of new environmental indicators covering all life cycle stages of the product by coupling a list of yes/no questions with an environmental matrix. The following indicators are calculated: Regulation risk, Impact of manufacturing the part, CO2 emissions and Recyclability potential. These indicators will be used as constraints in the multi-disciplinary design optimization (MDO) framework, meaning that the structure will be designed while complying with environmental targets and anticipating future regulation changes.

Engineered Structured Sorbents for the Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor from Manned Spacecraft Atmospheres: Applications and Testing 2008/2009

Developmental efforts are seeking to improve upon the efficiency and reliability of typical packed beds of sorbent pellets by using structured sorbents and alternative bed configurations. The benefits include increased structural stability gained by eliminating clay bound zeolite pellets that tend to fluidize and erode, and better thermal control during sorption leading to increased process efficiency. Test results that demonstrate such improvements are described and presented.
