3D-CFD Full Engine Simulation Application for Post-Oxidation Description

The introduction of real driving emissions cycles and increasingly restrictive emissions regulations force the automotive industry to develop new and more efficient solutions for emission reductions. In particular, the cold start and catalyst heating conditions are crucial for modern cars because is when most of the emissions are produced. One interesting strategy to reduce the time required for catalyst heating is post-oxidation. It consists in operating the engine with a rich in-cylinder mixture and completing the oxidation of fuel inside the exhaust manifold. The result is an increase in temperature and enthalpy of the gases in the exhaust, therefore heating the three-way-catalyst. The following investigation focuses on the implementation of post-oxidation by means of scavenging in a four-cylinder, turbocharged, direct injection spark ignition engine. The investigation is based on detailed measurements that are carried out at the test-bench.

Investigation of H2 Formation Characterization and its Contribution to Post- Oxidation Phenomenon in a Turbocharged DISI Engine

In this research, simulation and experimental investigation of H2 emission formation and its influence during the post-oxidation phenomenon were conducted on a turbo-charged spark ignition engine. During the post-oxidation phenomenon phase, rich air-fuel ratio (A/F) is used inside the cylinder. This rich excursion gives rise to the production of H2 emission by various reactions inside the cylinder. It is expected that the generation of this H2 emission can play a key role in the actuation of the post-oxidation and its reaction rate if enough temperature and mixing strength are attained. It is predicted that when rich combustion inside the cylinder will take place, more carbon monoxide (CO)/ Total Hydro Carbon (THC)/ Hydrogen (H2) contents will arrive in the exhaust manifold. This H2 content facilitates in the production of OH radical which contributes to the post-oxidation reaction and in-turn can aid towards increasing the enthalpy.

Extension of Operating Range of a Multi-Cylinder Gasoline HCCI Engine using the Blowdown Supercharging System

The objective of this study is to develop a practical technique to achieve HCCI operation with wide operation range. To attain this objective, the authors previously proposed the blowdown supercharge (BDSC) system and demonstrated the potential of the BDSC system to extend the high load HCCI operational limit. In this study, experimental works were conducted with focusing on improvement of combustion stability at low load operation and the reduction in cylinder to cylinder variation in ignition timing of multi-cylinder HCCI operation using the BDSC system. The experiments were conducted using a slightly modified production four-cylinder gasoline engine with compression ratio of about 12 at constant engine speed of 1500 rpm. The test fuel used was commercial gasoline which has RON of 91. To improve combustion stability at low load operation, the valve actuation strategy for the BDSC system was newly proposed and experimentally examined.

Evaluation of a Concept for DI Gasoline Combustion Using Enhanced Gas Motion

A direct injection gasoline engine system which employs a unique combustion system with enhanced gas motion is evaluated. Enhanced gas motion is produced by employing both a moderately strong swirl flow and a cavity in the piston. Advantages of this system are that the injection timing or spark timing need not be controlled severely and that since the injection timing can be set at near the intake BDC, time for evaporation can be gained to reduce soot emissions. Problems to be improved are that the Nox emissions level is worse than other lean burn systems and full load operation is not evaluated. According to the numerical calculations, the problems may be solved by enhancing the in-cylinder gas motion with axial stratification of swirl intensity at intake BDC; strong swirl near the cylinder head and weak swirl near the piston surface.

Driving Cycle Simulation of a Vehicle with Gasoline Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engine Using a Low-RON Fuel

An improvement of thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines is strongly required. Meanwhile, from the viewpoint of refinery, CO2 emissions and gasoline price decrease when lower octane gasoline can be used for vehicles. If lower octane gasoline is used for current vehicles, fuel consumption rate would increase due to abnormal combustion. However, if a Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine were to be used, the effect of octane number on engine performance would be relatively small and it has been revealed that the thermal efficiency is almost unchanged. In this study, the engine performance estimation of HCCI combustion using lower octane gasoline as a vision of the future engine was achieved. To quantitatively investigate the fuel consumption performance of a gasoline HCCI engine using lower octane fuel, the estimation of fuel consumption under different driving test cycles with different transmissions is carried out using 1D engine simulation code.

1-D Simulation Model Developed for a General Purpose Engine

In recent years, improvements in the fuel economy and exhaust emission performance of internal combustion engines have been increasingly required by regulatory agencies. One of the salient concerns regarding general purpose engines is the larger amount of CO emissions with which they are associated, compared with CO emissions from automobile engines. To reduce CO and other exhaust emissions while maintaining high fuel efficiency, the optimization of total engine system, including various design parameters, is essential. In the engine system optimization process, cycle simulation using 0-D and 1-D engine models are highly useful. To define an optimum design, the model used for the cycle simulation must be capable of predicting the effects of various parameters on the engine performance. In this study, a model for predicting the performance of a general purpose SI (Spark Ignited) engine is developed based on the commercially available engine simulation software, GT-POWER.

Analysis of Cylinder to Cylinder Variations in a Turbocharged Spark Ignition Engine at lean burn operations

In recent years, the improvement in the fuel efficiency and reduction in CO2 emission from internal combustion engines has been an urgent issue. The lean burn technology is one of the key technologies to improve thermal efficiency of SI engines. However, combustion stability deteriorates at lean burn operations. The reduction in cycle-to-cycle and cylinder-to-cylinder variations is one of the major issues to adapt the lean burn technique for production engines. However, the details of the causes and mechanisms for the combustion variations under the lean burn operations have not been cleared yet. The purpose of this study is to control cylinder to cylinder combustion variation. A conventional turbocharged direct injection SI engine was used as the test engine to investigate the effect of engine control parameters on the cylinder to cylinder variations. The engine speed is set at 2200 rpm and the intake pressure is set at 58, 78, 98 kPa respectively.

Performance Tests of Reverse Uniflow-Type Two-Stroke Gasoline DI Engine

Conventional two-stroke engines have defects such as unstable combustion, high fuel consumption rate and high HC emissions. In order to overcome the defects, a direct fuel injection system and a novel scavenging system were adopted. The authors tested a newly developed reverse uniflow-type two-stroke direct injection gasoline engine that was designed by numerical simulations. In comparison with the base engine at low engine speed, HC emission was decreased by up to 80%, and BSFC was reduced by around 40%. Power and BSFC were superior to those of a latest port-injection four-stroke engine. Furthermore, it was found that engine performance of exhaust gas emissions, fuel economy or output power can be selectively optimized by switching homogeneous and stratified combustion.

Numerical Analysis of Gas Exchange Process in a Small Two-Stroke Gasoline Engine

To survive the severe regulations for both the exhaust gas emissions and fuel economy, research on small two-stroke gasoline engines from both the experimental and theoretical viewpoints is quite necessary. In the present study, firstly, performance tests of a direct injection small two-stroke gasoline model engine were carried out. Based on these experimental results, three-dimensional flow calculations from scavenging pipe to exhaust pipe during the gas-exchange and piston compression processes were made with the same experimental conditions. As a result, the gas exchange process was investigated and some problems were clarified. Secondly, parametric calculations with changing just exhaust port timings were performed to solve the problems found in the above calculations.

0D Modeling of Real-Driving NOx Emissions for a Diesel Passenger Vehicle

NOx emissions from diesel passenger vehicles affect the atmospheric environment. It is difficult to evaluate the NOx emissions influenced by environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature, traffic conditions, driving patterns, etc. In the authors’ previous study, real-driving experiments were performed on city and highway routes using a diesel passenger car with only an exhaust gas recirculation system. A statistical prediction model of NOx emissions was considered for simple estimations in the real world using instantaneous vehicle data measured by the portable emissions measurement system and global positioning system. The prediction model consisted of explanatory variables, such as velocity, acceleration, road gradient, and position of transmission gear. Using the explanatory variables, NOx emissions on the city and highway routes was well predicted using a diesel vehicle without NOx reduction devices.

Fuel Stratification Using Twin-Tumble Intake Flows to Extend Lean Limit in Super-Lean Gasoline Combustion

To drastically improve thermal efficiency of a gasoline spark-ignited engine, super-lean burn is a promising solution. Although, studies of lean burn have been made by so many researchers, the realization is blocked by a cycle-to-cycle combustion variation. In this study, based on the causes of cycle-to-cycle variation clarified by the authors’ previous study, a unique method to reduce the cycle-to-cycle variation is proposed and evaluated. That is, a bulk quench at early expansion stroke could be reduced by making slight fuel stratification inside the cylinder using the twin-tumble of intake flows. As a result, the lean limit was extended with keeping low NOx and moderate THC emissions, leading to higher thermal efficiency.

Scavenging Phenomena Based Post-oxidation in Exhaust Manifold of a Turbocharged Spark Ignition Engine

In this research, a novel methodology for the post-oxidation in a turbocharged spark ignition (SI) engine is proposed and investigated that can improve the emissions along with the reduction in turbo-lag. In this research, both simulation and experimental activities are performed. The 1-D simulation model was used for the identification of efficient scavenging. Thereafter, experimental validation tests for modeling and post oxidation were conducted on a 4-cylinder turbocharged SI engine. From the results, it was revealed that efficient scavenging and post-oxidation can be obtained at lower speed and higher load. The enthalpy in exhaust manifold increased due to the post-oxidation reaction which in turn increased the temperature and pressure of the exhaust gases and hence emissions reduced. Also, due to the increased enthalpy at turbine upstream, the turbocharger speed increased and as a consequence, reduction in the turbo-lag was observed.

Resistive particulate matter sensor (PMS) is a promising solution for the diagnosis of diesel/gasoline particulate filter (DPF/GPF) functionality. Frequently triggered regeneration of their sensing element, for cleaning the soot dendrites deposited on the surface, leads to experience high temperature and thermal stress and pose high risk of developing cracks in the electrodes or sensing substrate. A semiconductor with a dopant concentration of 100 ppm~10000 ppm is applied as a sensing element for PMS self-diagnosis. Upon cooling at air, the polarization doped-insulating layer in a resistive PMS starts to resume the electrical conductivity in the wake of experiencing high regeneration temperature, through the electron and hole directional mobility.

Improvement of Post-Oxidation for Low-Emission Engines through 3D-CFD Virtual Development

There is a growing need for low-emissions concepts due to stricter emission regulations, more stringent homologation cycles, and the possibility of a ban on new engines by 2035. Of particular concern are the conditions during a cold start, when the Three-Way Catalyst is not yet heated to its light-off temperature. During this period, the catalyst remains inactive, thereby failing to convert pollutants. Reducing the time needed to reach this temperature is crucial to comply with the more stringent emissions standards. The post oxidation by means of secondary air injection, illustrated in this work, is a possible solution to reduce the time needed to reach the above-mentioned temperature. The strategy consists of injecting air into the exhaust manifold via secondary air injectors to oxidize unburned fuel that comes from a rich combustion within the cylinder.

A Study of the Mechanism of High-Speed Knocking in a Two-Stroke SI Engine with High Compression Ratio

Experimental methods and numerical analysis were used to investigate the mechanism of high-speed knocking that occurs in small two-stroke engines. The multi-ion probe method was used in the experiments to visualize flame propagation in the cylinder. The flame was detected by 14 ion probes grounded in the end gas region. A histogram was made of the order in which flames were detected. The characteristics of combustion in the cylinder were clarified by comparing warming up and after warming up and by extracting the features of the cycle in which knocking occurred. As a result, regions of fast flame propagation and regions prone to auto-ignition were identified. In the numerical analysis, flow and residual gas distribution in the cylinder, flame propagation and self-ignition were visualized by 3D CFD using 1D CFD calculation results as boundary conditions and initial conditions.

Investigation of The Effect of Enhanced In-Cylinder Flow on HCCI Combustion in a Rapid Compression and Expansion Machine

The purpose of this paper is to find a way to extend the high load limit of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion. A newly developed rapid compression and expansion machine (RCEM) was employed to reproduce the typical HCCI high load condition. The in-cylinder turbulence was created by the special piston which equipped with a flow guide plate. Meanwhile, the ambient temperature distribution in the cylinder was determined by the wall temperature controlling system which was controlled by the independent coolant passages. In addition, the numerical simulation by using large eddy method coupled with a detailed chemical reaction was conducted as well. The results show that HCCI mode is potential to be improved at high load condition in full consideration of in-cylinder temperature, flow, and turbulence.

Numerical Investigation of Knocking in a Small Two-Stroke Engine with a High Compression Ration to Improve Thermal Efficiency

This study aimed to achieve both a high compression ratio and low knock intensity in a two-stroke engine. Previous research has suggested that knock intensity can be reduced by combining combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passaging design for the same engine specifications with a compression ratio of 13.7. In this report, we investigate whether low knock intensity can be achieved at compression ratios of 14.4 and 16.8 by adjusting the combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passage design. As a result, the mechanism by which combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passage design change knock intensity was clarified.

Effects of pre-chamber specifications on lean burn operation in a pre-chamber engine with fuel reformed gas

Lean combustion has been well known to be an effective method to improve the thermal efficiency. However, leaner mixture is prone to cause the unstable combustion and poorer unburned hydrocarbon (UTHC) emissions. Pre-chamber turbulent jet combustion has been proved to enhance the combustion stability under ultra-lean conditions. However, more NOx is formed during the combustion, resulting in the fact that the tailpipe NOx emission is too high to be still not available for the real application. In this report, in order to achieve a higher air excess ratio while keeping lower UTHC emissions, and especially NOx emission, a new combustion technique which combined pre-chamber jet combustion with fuel reforming was proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a pre-chamber engine.

Improvement of Post-Oxidation Phenomena with Lambda-split, Post-Injection and Mixing Improvement of Exhaust Gas in Turbocharged GDI Engine

Post-oxidation has been used to enhance the chemical reactions in the exhaust gas pipes, leading to the activations of the turbocharger and catalyst at cold state. In this research, a detailed study of the various mechanisms for post-oxidation is performed. For the post-oxidation activation, the unburned gas species (CO, THC, H2) in the exhaust manifold must be produced by some methodologies, such as scavenging, lambda-split, and post-injection. The required amount of O2 concentration can be either supplied by the scavenging (valve overlap tuning) or the secondary air injection (SAI) system. Mixing the species is also an important key to promoting post- oxidation, and an internal bypass adapter with a modified exhaust adapter shape was developed and evaluated.
