Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Models to Predict Cetane Number of Different Biodiesels and Their Blends

The ignition quality of a fuel is described by its cetane number. Experimental methods used to determine cetane number employ Co-operative fuel research (CFR) engine and Ignition quality tester (IQT) which are expensive, have less repeatability and require skilled operation, and hence least preferred. There are many prediction models reported, which involve number of double bonds and number of carbon atoms whose determination is not direct. Using models that relate biodiesel composition to its cetane number is limited by the range of esters involved. Hence, a model to predict cetane number of biodiesels that addresses the limitations of the existing models, without ignoring the influence of factors such as degree of unsaturation and number of carbon atoms, is needed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) could be one such method.

Eco-Friendly Brake-Pads Using Ferritic Stainless-Steel Particles of Varying Sizes: Influence on Performance Properties

Metallic particles in brake-friction materials (FMs) play a vital role in improving mainly strength, friction level, thermal conductivity and hence resistance to fade during braking operations. Although Copper was the most efficient and popular metallic ingredient in FMs, it is being phased out because of its proven threat to the aquatic life in the form of wear debris. Hardly any successful efforts are reported in open literature barring few on in the authors’ laboratory. It is well-known that the size and shape of particles affect the performance of composites apart from their type, concentration, etc. In this paper, Ferritic stainless steel (SS 434) particles were selected as a theme ingredient in two forms, first particulate (SSP) with two sizes, larger (30-45 micron) and smaller (10-20 micron) and also in the form of swarf. The aim was to investigate the size and shape effect of these ingredients when used to manufacture the brake-pads on the performance properties.

Controlling the Performance of Copper-Free Brake-Pads by Varying Size of Graphite Particles

Graphite plays a crucial role in friction materials, since it has good thermal conductivity, lubricity and act as a friction modifier. The right type, amount, shape, and size of the particles control the performance of the brake-pads. The theme of the study was investigating the influence of size of graphite particles (having all other specifications identical) on performance properties of brake-pads containing graphite particles in the average size of 60 μm, 120 μm, 200 μm and 400 μm. Physical, mechanical and chemical characterization of the developed brake-pads was done. The tribological performance was studied using a full- scale inertia brake dynamometer following a Japanese automobile testing standard (JASO C406). Tribo-performance in terms of fade resistance, friction stability and wear resistance were observed best for smaller graphite particles. It was concluded that smaller size serves best for achieving best performance properties barring compressibility.

Non-Asbestos Organic (NAO) brake- material research has been significant in the last decade in an attempt to replace the conventional semi-metallic and asbestos based materials. Influence of ingredients in this multi-ingredient (generally 10-25 in different proportions) system on performance properties, however, is still not thoroughly researched area because of complexity involved and needs intensive efforts to understand this aspect. Graphite is one of the most important and almost inevitable ingredients in friction materials. A wide variety of graphite varying in origin, particle size, crystallinity, thermal conductivity etc. is used by the industry. An in-depth and systematic study on the influence of size of graphite on tribo-performance, however, is not available.

Development of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Stack for a Range Extender for Electric Vehicles

Severe air pollution in cities caused largely by vehicular emissions, which requires urgent remedial measures. As automobiles are indispensable modes of personal and public mobility, pre-emptive efforts are necessary to reduce the adverse effects arising from their operation. A significant improvement in air quality can be achieved through large-scale introduction of vehicles with extremely low emission such as hybrid-electric and zero emission vehicles. Range extension of electric vehicles (EVs) is also of utmost importance to alleviate the handicap of restricted mileage of purely plug-in EVs as compared to conventional vehicles. This paper presents development of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack used for the range extender electric vehicles. The Fuel cell stack for range extender vehicle operated in a dead end mode using hydrogen and air as open cathode.

Development of 2 Speed Automatic Transmission for Battery Electric Two Wheelers

Improving vehicle performance in terms of both torque and power is a strong customer need in both conventional and electric vehicles. In this work, different two speed automatic transmission (AT) concepts are developed to improve the energy efficiency and performance of battery electric two wheelers. Developed transmission systems are simple, compact and cost effective and results in relatively high energy efficiency of an electric motor. The unique shift control strategy ensures motor to operate at higher efficiency zones to minimize the overall energy consumption. Virtual simulations of electric vehicle were carried out for different driving conditions and optimal transmission ratios were determined. Mechanical behaviors such as gear shift characteristics, linear and angular velocities, inertial forces of each components are analyzed by using Multi body dynamics simulation. Forces predicted here are further used for durability studies of these components.

This research paper focuses on the modelling and analysis of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) specifically designed for electric vehicles (EVs) with a particular emphasis on the flywheel rotor system associated with active magnetic bearings. The methodology used simulation approaches to investigate the dynamics of the flywheel system. The objective of this study is to explore the effects of implementing the flywheel energy storage system on the performance of the EV. The paper presents a comprehensive model of the flywheel energy storage system, considering the mechanical and electrical aspects. The mechanical model accounts for the dynamic behaviors of the flywheel, including parameters such as rotational speed, inertia, and friction. The electrical model describes the interaction between the flywheel and the power electronics, such as the converter and motor/generator. To evaluate the benefits of the flywheel energy storage system, simulations are conducted.

Experimental Analysis of Force Recovery and Response Time using Strain Measurement Sensors in Stress Wave Force Balance

Severe problem of aerodynamic heating and drag force are inherent with any hypersonic space vehicle like space shuttle, missiles etc. For proper design of vehicle, the drag force measurement become very crucial. Ground based test facilities are employed for these estimates along with any suitable force balance as well as sensors. There are many sensors (Accelerometer, Strain gauge and Piezofilm) reported in the literature that is used for evaluating the actual aerodynamic forces over test model in high speed flow. As per previous study, the piezofilm also become an alternative sensor over the strain gauges due to its simple instrumentation. For current investigation, the piezofilm and strain gauge sensors have mounted on same stress force balance to evaluate the response time as well as accuracy of predicted force at the same instant. However, these force balance need to be calibrated for inverse prediction of the force from recorded responses.

Deep Learning-Based Digital Twining Models for Inter System Behavior and Health Assessment of Combat Aircraft Systems

Modern combat aircraft demands efficient maintenance strategies to ensure operational readiness while minimizing downtime and costs. Innovative approaches using Digital Twining models are being explored to capture inter system behaviours and assessing health of systems which will help maintenance aspects. This approach employs advanced deep learning protocols to analyze the intricate interactions among various systems using the data collected from various systems. The research involves extensive data collection from sensors within combat aircraft, followed by data preprocessing and feature selection, using domain knowledge and correlation analysis. Neural networks are designed for individual systems, and hyper parameter tuning is performed to optimize their performance. By combining the outputs of these during the model integration phase, an overall health assessment of the aircraft will be generated.
