General Modeling of Nonlinear Isolators for Vehicle Ride Studies

2010-04-12
2010-01-0950
The advancements made in modeling and parameter identification of nonlinear isolation components in the underlying investigation confirm the importance of accurate Multibody Dynamics modeling of these components for reducing vibration and/or improving ride comfort. Considering dynamic stiffness and loss angle characteristics, the proposed nonlinear isolation component uses the Bouc/Wen hysteresis model for excitation amplitude dependency and a transfer function for excitation frequency dependency. Various combinations of Bouc/Wen hysteresis parameters result in different shapes for hysteresis loops and allows for modeling a wide range of soft and stiff isolator characteristics. The effect of the proposed isolation component on ride studies is illustrated by simulating a maneuver on a road profile using the OpenCRG road description with SimXpert Motion Workspace and Adams/Car. Tire belt dynamics are captured by adding a rigid ring part to the PAC2002 tire model [ 1 ].

EWB Control Based on the Estimated Clamping Force

2012-09-17
2012-01-1797
This paper focuses on clamping force control of electronic wedge brakes without additional sensors for cost-effectiveness and system simplicity. Brake-by-wire systems can be used for enhanced, safe braking of intelligent and environmentally friendly vehicles such as gas-electric hybrid and electric vehicles. For implementation of the electronic wedge brake, the clamping force should be controlled properly even though model uncertainty and parameter variations exist due to the environment or system characteristics changes, e.g., temperature variations, pad wear, and nonlinear friction. In this paper, the electronic wedge brake is modeled to include the wedge dynamics as well as the nonlinearities such as backlash and friction in mechanical connections and clearance between the brake disk and pad. An on-line status monitoring algorithm using the simplified mathematical models is designed to estimate the mechanical system parameters.

Sensor Fault Diagnosis for EMB using Parity Space Approach

2012-09-17
2012-01-1794
In future automobiles, conventional hydraulic brakes can be removed and be replaced by electrically operated brakes called brake-by-wire. The brake-by-wire units such as EMB(Electro-Mechanical Brake) provide better performance in braking by directly controlling the brake motor and are environmentally friendly without hydraulic fluid. Since the brake is safety-critical, the EMB should be reliable in its lifetime and robust fault diagnosis techniques should be included. Many researches have been carried out to develop the diagnosis techniques to improve their robustness and reliability. In this study, a fault size detection method is proposed with the parity space approach for the EMB system. In order to detect and isolate sensor faults from the residual, the residual generator is constructed. The model-based fault diagnosis system is developed for the EMB sensors; current sensor, position (or speed) sensor and clamping force sensor.

Optimal Rear Suspension Design for the Improvement of Ride Comfort and Suspension Noise

2012-04-16
2012-01-0975
The purpose of this paper is to identify and reduce a knocking noise from a rear suspension. First, the characteristics of a knocking noise are analyzed experimentally in the frequency domain. It was found that the knocking noise of a passenger room and vibration at a lower arm, a subframe and a floor are strongly correlated. Second, the knocking noise sensitivity is strongly dependent on suspension dynamics characteristics. Moreover, the improvement of ride comfort and noise was achieved simultaneously based on simulation analysis, principle vehicle testing. A design parameter study shows that the trailing arm bush stiffness, shock absorber bump/rebound damping characteristics, floor stiffness and shock absorber insulator bushing are one of the most sensitive parameter to affect the suspension knocking noise. Finally, this paper shows how the suspension knocking noise and ride comfort can be improved considering handling performance.

2022-01-1177
NVH is one of the important factors in automobile development. Brake squeal noise, in particular, is an important indicator of perceived quality of automobile. Squeal noise, one of the most difficult factors in automobile brake development, is noise caused by the complex interaction of friction characteristics, caliper behavior, frequency characteristics and environmental conditions. Therefore, it is not easy to come up with an effective improvement plan in a short time. The purpose of this study is to develop a new evaluation method to improve the squeal noise of the brake caliper system and to select the FIM index, which is the standard for objective numerical analysis. The newly developed Friction Induced Modal Method is an evaluation method that uses an inertia noise dynamometer to control the environment and braking conditions in the same way as the squeal noise conditions generated in the field, and to analyze the NVH characteristics of brake calipers.

2013-01-0108
EMB (Electro-Mechanical Brake) system that removes hydraulic brake device from conventional brake systems completely can be considered as BbW (Brake-by-Wire) system in the full sense. As the research on the EMB system is actively conducted, it is also required to establish the test methods for the performance verification and evaluation of developed EMB system. In fact, however, the characteristics of the EMB system makes it difficult to apply it to an actual vehicle test due to the expense and safety matters in the process of the test and evaluation. Thus, this study developed the EMB HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) system in application of the actual EMB system in order to verify the actuating response characteristics and control logic performance of the EMB system before an actual vehicle test.

The Holistic Analysis of Flexible Aircraft Maneuvering Under Comprehensive Aerodynamic Loading

2004-11-02
2004-01-3118
The reduction of a full aircraft structure/loading system from a Cartesian space to a condensed, modal space offers significant computational advantages in complex aero-elastic analysis without sacrificing the system kinematic and kinetic integrity. By combining linear, finite-element (FEA)-based structural analysis with non-linear, mechanical system simulation (MSS), the same modal basis coordinate set is used to represent the aerodynamic loading, structural, and gross motion behavior of maneuvering, high-integrity, full aircraft system models. Examples are shown of full aircraft, comprised of flexible, single-and multiple-structures, performing stores separation, landing, and general maneuvers. These are done using aerodynamic modeling of varying completeness ranging from complete, Panel Method (PM)-derived loads to more simplified, distributed loads. Limits on the validity of the linearity assumptions are discussed

2019-01-0799
In this paper, a CAE methodology based on a multiphysics approach for engine gear noise evaluation is reviewed. The method comprises the results and outputs from several different analytical domains to perform the noise risk assessment. The assessment includes the source-path analysis of the gear-induced rattling and whining noise. The vibration data from the exterior surface of the engine is extended through acoustic analysis to perform the engine noise simulation and to identify acoustic hot spots contributing to the noise. The study includes simulations under different engine loading conditions with results presented in both time and frequency domains. Various sensitivity analyses involving different gear geometries and micro-geometries are investigated as well. Finally, the simulation results from three different engines are compared vis-a-vis.

2021-01-0451
A new type of drive system has been designed, analyzed, patented, prototyped, and tested. The drive’s unique capabilities include the ability to vary the bottom dead center position to reduce the stroke, and simultaneously vary the top dead center position to achieve the desired compression ratio with one simple, low friction mechanism. The purpose of the concept is to reduce losses associated with operation at partial load as most engines spend a preponderance of their operating life at partial load. This paper covers the design and analysis, prototyping, and testing of the unit as an air compressor. Engine simulation of the unit configured as a gasoline engine showed a ~30% improvement in fuel economy on a 10-mode weighted cycle and is covered in SAE 2021-01-0442, “Continuously Variable Displacement Drive for Engines Part 1, Performance Simulation.”

Solver Embedded Fatigue

2014-04-01
2014-01-0904
This paper presents a fundamental conceptual change to the traditional CAE based fatigue analysis process. Traditional approaches take the responses from a stress solver and these are then transferred into a secondary fatigue analysis step. In this way fatigue is, and always has been, treated as a post processing step. The new conceptual change described in this paper involves combining the two separate tasks into one (stress and fatigue together). This results in a simple, elegant and more powerful Durability Management concept. This new process requires no large data files to be transferred, no complicated file management and it is likely that whole fatigue calculation process can be done in memory. This makes it possible to perform optimization with fatigue life as the constraint. It also facilitates full body fatigue life calculations, including dynamic behavior, for much larger models than was previously possible.

Extensive Correlation Study of Acoustic Trim Packages in Trimmed Body Modeling of an Automotive Vehicle

2019-06-05
2019-01-1511
In the automotive sector, the structure borne noise generated by the engine and road-tire interactions is a major source of noise inside the passenger cavity. In order to increase the global acoustic comfort, predictive simulation models must be available in the design phase. The acoustic trims have a major impact on the noise level inside the car cavity. Although several publications for this kind of simulations can be found, an extensive correlation study with measurement is needed, in order to validate the modeling approaches. In this article, a detailed correlation study for a complete car is performed. The acoustic trim package of the measured car includes all acoustic trims, such as carpet, headliner, seats and firewall covers. The simulation methodology relies on the influence of the acoustic trim package on the car structure and acoustic cavities. The challenge lies in the definition of an efficient and accurate framework for acoustic trimmed bodies.
