Micro-Texture Tailored Friction Modeling and Discrete Application in Drawability Improvement

Friction plays an important role in the deep drawing process. Previous research shows friction condition can be tailored by applying micro-textures on tooling surfaces. A friction model is proposed to reveal the mechanism of altering friction condition by configuring micro-texture. A discrete friction concept is proposed to improve drawability of sheet metal and demonstrates numerically on a non-symmetric geometry drawing process.

Development of a Method to Assess Vehicle Stability and Controllability in Open and Closed-Loop Maneuvers

This paper describes a method to evaluate vehicle stability and controllability when the vehicle operates in the nonlinear range of lateral dynamics. The method is applied to open-loop steering maneuvers as well as closed-loop path-following maneuvers. Although path-following maneuvers are more representative of real world driving intent, they are usually considered inappropriate for objective assessment because of repeatability and accuracy issues. The automated test driver (ATD) can perform path-following maneuvers accurately and with good repeatability. This paper discusses the usefulness of application of the automated test drivers and path-following maneuvers. The dynamic mode of instability is not directly obtained from measurable outputs such as yawrate and lateral acceleration as in open-loop maneuvers. A few metrics are defined to quantify deviation from desired or ideal behavior in terms of observed “unexpected” lateral force and moment.

As applications in aerospace, transportation and data centers are faced with increased electric power consumption, their dc operating voltages have increased to reduce cable weight and to improve efficiency. Electric arcs in these systems still cause dangerous fault conditions and have garnered more attention in recent years. Arcs can be classified as either low impedance or high impedance arcs and both can cause insulation damage and fires. Low impedance arcs release lots of energy when high voltage becomes nearly shorted to ground. High impedance arcs can occur when two current-carrying electrodes are separated, either by vibration of a loose connection or by cables snapping. The high impedance arc decreases load current due to a higher equivalent load impedance seen by the source. This complicates the differentiation of a high impedance arc fault from normal operation.

Addressing Drivability in an Extended Range Electric Vehicle Running an Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS)

The EcoCAR Challenge team at The Ohio State University has designed an extended-range electric vehicle capable of 50 miles all-electric range via a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with range extension and limited parallel operation supplied by a 1.8 L dedicated E85 engine. This vehicle is designed to drastically reduce fuel consumption, while meeting Tier II Bin 5 emissions standards. This vehicle design is implemented in a GM crossover utility vehicle as part of the EcoCAR Challenge. This paper explains the implementation of the vehicle's control strategy in order to maintain high efficiency and improve drivability. The vehicle control strategy employs both distinct operating modes and an Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) to find the most efficient operating point. The ECMS strategy does an online search for the most efficient torque split in order to meet the driver's command.

Effect of Flow on Helmholtz Resonator Acoustics: A Three-Dimensional Computational Study vs. Experiments

The effectiveness of the Helmholtz resonator as a narrow band acoustic attenuator, particularly at low frequencies, makes it a highly desirable component in a wide variety of applications, including engine breathing systems. The present study investigates the influence of mean flow grazing over the neck of such a configuration on its acoustic performance both computationally and experimentally. Three-dimensional unsteady, turbulent, and compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by using the Pressure-Implicit-Splitting-of-Operators algorithm in STAR-CD to determine the time-dependent flow field. The introduction of mean flow in the main duct is shown to reduce the peak transmission loss and shift the fundamental resonance frequency to a higher value.

A Survey of Automotive Diagnostic Equipment and Procedures

The introduction of advanced electronic controls in passenger vehicles over the last decade has made traditional diagnostic methods inadequate to satisfy on- and off-board diagnostic needs. Due to the complexity of today's automotive control systems, it is imperative that appropriate diagnostic tools be developed that are capable of satisfying current and projected service and on-board requirements. The performance of available diagnostic and test equipment is still amenable to further improvement, especially as it pertains to the diagnosis of incipient and intermittent faults. It is our contention that significant improvement is possible in these areas. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of on- and off-board diagnostic tools documented in the published literature, with the aim of giving the reader an understanding of their capabilities and limitations, and it further proposes alternative solutions that may be adopted as a basis for an advanced diagnostic instrument.

Engine Vibration Control Using Passive, Active, and Adaptive Hydraulic Mount Systems

Performance characteristics of passive, active, and broadband adaptive engine mounts are compared over a wide frequency range up to 250 Hz in the context of a quarter-vehicle heave model. The optimal damping coefficient of a rubber-metal mount is determined using random vibration theory. The small-scale active mount employs proportional-plus-integral control based on linear optimal control theory. The new adaptive hydraulic mount system implements an on-off damping control mode by using engine intake-manifold vacuum and a microprocessor-based solenoid valve controller. Through analytical methods, it is observed that this adaptive mount provides most desirable dynamic performance with regard to the engine-bounce control, shock absorption and vibration isolation performance requirements. Although technical prospects of the proposed adaptive system appear promising, in-situ performance needs to be evaluated.

Integrated Powertrain Diagnostic System: Linking On- and Off-Board Diagnostic Strategies

A number of automotive diagnostic equipment and procedures have evolved over the last two decades, leading to two generations of on-board diagnostic requirements (OBDI and OBDII), increasing the number of components and systems to be monitored by the diagnostic tools. The goal of On-Board Diagnostic is to alert the driver to the presence of a malfunction of the emission control system, and to identify the location of the problem in order to assist mechanics in properly performing repairs. The aim of this paper is to suggest a methodology for the development of an Integrated Powertrain Diagnostic System (EPDS) that can combine the information supplied by conventional tailpipe inspection programs with onboard diagnostics to provide fast and reliable diagnosis of malfunctions.

NVH Research Facilities at The Ohio State University: Existing Facilities and Envisioned Enhancements

The automotive NVH research infrastructure at Ohio State includes the Center for Automotive Research, the Acoustics and Dynamics Laboratory, and the Gear Dynamics and Gear Noise Research Laboratory. This paper describes the facilities of these laboratories. Two unique existing facilities, namely the transmission error measurement of gears and a laboratory for the experimental measurement of engine breathing systems, will be emphasized. Also covered are the enhancements that are envisioned through a recent grant from the Ohio Board of Regents.

Experimental Verification of Design Charts for Acoustic Absorbers

Design charts which predict acoustic absorption of porous insulators were verified experimentally using the two-microphone technique to measure the normal incidence absorption coefficient of three glass fiber materials in two different arrangements - a single-layer sample and a single layer in front of an air space, each backed by a rigid termination. The specific flow resistivities of the materials ranged from 2,000 to 52,000 mks rayls/m. Experimentally determined absorption coefficients were in agreement with those predicted by the design charts. The results indicate that these charts could be a useful tool in designing sound absorbers for practical applications.

The Application of Fuzzy Logic to the Diagnosis of Automotive Systems

The evolution of the diagnostic equipment for automotive application is the direct effect of the implementation of sophisticated and high technology control systems in the new generation of passenger cars. One of the most challenging issues in automotive diagnostics is the ability to assess, to analyze, and to integrate all the information and data supplied by the vehicle's on-board computer. The data available might be in the form of fault codes or sensors and actuators voltages. Moreover, as environmental regulations get more stringent, knowledge of the concentration of different species emitted from the tailpipe during the inspection and maintenance programs can become of great importance for an integrated powertrain diagnostic system. A knowledge-based diagnostic tool is one of the approaches that can be adopted to carry out the challenging task of detecting and diagnosing faults related to the emissions control system in an automobile.

Self-Tuning Optimal Control of an Active Suspension

The objective of this paper is to develop a self-tuning optimal control of an active suspension. An active suspension composed of an identifier and a controller is proposed in this paper. Although control strategies on active (or semi-active) suspensions have been investigated during the past few decades, some problems are not well understood yet. One of them arising from the ride control of an active suspension is that when the weight and the moments of inertia of the sprung mass are varied, the feedback gains of the controller should vary with the variation of parameters accordingly. Therefore, the identifier is proposed before the controller is designed. In the real situations, the parameter variation may occur when loadings on vehicles vary - either from passengers or payloads, especially, in the case of loading on a truck. An identification structure using parallel model reference adaptive system (MRAS) is proposed to identify the true parameters.

IVHS~Ohio: A state initiative

The state of Ohio has recognized the importance and potential impact of Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS) to its citizens and business enterprises. In response to the identified need, a small group of individuals representing Federal and state government, academia, and the private sector have worked together over the past year to initiate a statewide IVHS effort. This initiative is referred to as IVHS~Ohio. The objective of the effort is to "coordinate and foster a public, private, and academic partnership to make the urban and rural surface transportation system in the state of Ohio significantly safer, more effective, and more efficient by accelerating the identification, development, integration, and deployment of IVHS technologies." A May 1993 symposium was attended by over 220 people from government, academia, and the private sector. The result was a unanimous decision to establish a statewide IVHS program.
