Experimental Investigation of Fuel Impingement and Spray-Cooling on the Piston of a GDI Engine via Instantaneous Surface Temperature Measurements

In order to comply with more and more stringent emission standards, like EU6 which will be mandatory starting in September 2014, GDI engines have to be further optimized particularly in regard of PN emissions. It is generally accepted that the deposition of liquid fuel wall films in the combustion chamber is a significant source of particulate formation in GDI engines. Particularly the wall surface temperature and the temperature drop due to the interaction with liquid fuel spray were identified as important parameters influencing the spray-wall interaction [1]. In order to quantify this temperature drop at combustion chamber surfaces, surface temperature measurements on the piston of a single-cylinder engine were conducted. Therefore, eight fast-response thermocouples were embedded 0.3 μm beneath the piston surface and the signals were transmitted from the moving piston to the data acquisition system via telemetry.

Evaluation of Geometry-Dependent Spray Hole Individual Mass Flow Rates of Multi-Hole High-Pressure GDI-Injectors Utilizing a Novel Measurement Setup

In order to optimize spray layouts of commonly used high-pressure injectors for gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines featuring multi-hole valve seats, a detailed understanding of the cause-effect relation between inner spray hole geometries and inner flow conditions, initializing the process of internal mixture formation, is needed. Therefore, a novel measurement setup, capable of determining spray hole individual mass flow rates, is introduced and discussed. To prove its feasibility, a 2-hole configuration is chosen. The injected fuel quantities are separated mechanically and guided to separate pressure tight measurement chambers. Each measurement chamber allows for time resolved mass flow rate measurements based on the HDA measurement principle (German: “Hydraulisches Druck-Anstiegsverfahren”).

On Road Durability and Performance Test of Diesel Particulate Filter with BS III and BS IV Fuel for Indian Market

The future emission regulation (BS V) in India is expected to create new challenges to meet the particulate matter (PM) limit for diesel cars. The upcoming emission norms will bring down the limit of PM by 80 % when compared to BS IV emission norms. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is one of the promising technologies to achieve this emission target. The implementation of DPF system into Indian market poses challenges against fuel quality, driving cycles and warranty. Hence, it is necessary to do a detailed on-road evaluation of the DPF system with commercially available fuel under country specific drive cycles. Therefore, we conducted full vehicle durability testing with DPF system which is available in the European market to evaluate its robustness and reliability with BS III fuel (≤350ppm sulfur) & BS IV (≤50ppm sulfur) fuel under real Indian driving conditions.

Internet Protocol over Ethernet in Powertrain - Comparison with Current Applications and Future Trends

The increasing number of electronic control units (ECUs) in vehicles leads to more and more complex systems with a steadily growing demand for data exchange. This growth includes the number of bus participants, the amount of data and hence the data transfer rates. In addition, the trend towards car-to-x connectivity reinforces the need for new in-vehicle communication solutions. Since the early 1990s Controller Area Network (CAN) is the most widely used powertrain bus system. Since 2000 FlexRay is used in addition to CAN in the premium segment. For classic powertrain applications, the data transfer rates of these bus systems are sufficient; however the utilization is sometimes difficult and gateways are often required. For new applications like hybrid and electric vehicles and the next generation of external communication applications (e.g. telematics services) new concepts based on the existing bus systems or completely new solutions are needed.

Development of Universal Brake Test Data Exchange Format and Evaluation Standard

Brake system development and testing is spread over vehicle manufacturers, system and component suppliers. Test equipment from different sources, even resulting from different technology generations, different data analysis and report tools - comprising different and sometimes undocumented algorithms - lead to a difficult exchange and analysis of test results and, at the same time, contributes to unwanted test variability. Other studies regarding the test variability brought up that only a unified and unambiguous data format will allow a meaningful and comparative evaluation of these data and only standardization will reveal the actual reasons of test variability. The text at hand illustrates that a substantial part of test variability is caused by a misinterpretation of data and/or by the application of different algorithms.

Ethernet and IP - The Solution to Master Complexity, Safety and Security in Vehicle Communication Networks?

The development of vehicle communication networks is challenged not only by the increasing demand in data exchange and required data rate but also the need to connect the vehicle to external sources for personal connectivity of driver and car to infrastructure applications. Solutions are required to master complexity of in-vehicle communication networks, e.g. diagnostic access, flashing of Electronic Control Units, the data backbone connecting the vehicle domains and the data transfer of cameras. Safety (data transfer) and security (violation) issues of the communication networks gain more importance especially by introducing interfaces to external sources either via mobile devices or by connecting the vehicle to other external sources, e.g. Internet and Car to Infrastructure applications. The Internet Protocol (IP) appears to be an ideal solution to address these challenges, especially in connection with an Ethernet physical layer for fast data transfer.

Investigation on the Performance of a Mechanistic Electric Turbocharger Model for a Vehicular Fuel Cell System

The electric turbocharger is a promising type of air supply unit for future automotive fuel cell drive systems. It comprises of a centrifugal compressor, a variable geometry turbine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor assembled on a single shaft. Compared to other types of vehicular fuel cell air supplies, like for example a screw or roots compressor, it needs less installation space and has lower weight while also causing less noise and vibration. This paper presents a validated mechanistic model of the electric turbocharger. The stationary compressor model is based on a set of aerodynamic loss models with surge and stone wall line prediction capability. Similarly, the stationary variable axial turbine is a detailed station based model derived from aerodynamic losses at the turbine wheel and the stator blades. The aerodynamic losses incorporated in the compressor and the turbine models are implemented under MATLAB/Simulink and show a good correlation with the experimental data.

In order to reduce fuel consumption in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, effective distribution of power demand between Fuel Cell and Battery is required. Energy management strategies can improve fuel economy by meeting power demand efficiently. This paper explains development of various energy management strategies for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle with Lithium Ion Battery. Drive cycles used for optimization and analysis of the strategies are New European Drive cycles (NEDC), Japanese Drive cycles (JAP1015), City Drive cycles, Highway Drive cycles (FHDS) and Federal Urban Drive cycles (FUDS). All Fuel consumption and ageing calculations are done using backward model implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK.

The article describes the methods, which are employed in order to ensure high performance, safety and quality of ABS and ASR. System behaviour is evaluated and optimized by computer simulation. Moreover, a real-time simulator has been developed by which the consequences of hardware defects can be investigated systematically, Despite the increasing use of simulation the testing of vehicles remains the most important tool for system evaluation. For that purpose, a digital data acquisition system has been developed and objective evaluation criteria have been established. In order to achieve high product quality the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is carried out at an early phase of development. Another prerequisite for high product quality is thorough durability and endurance testing before release of production.

Measurement and Simulation of Transients in Longitudinal and Lateral Tire Forces

The design of ABS- or vehicle control systems by means of computer simulation needs adequate tire models. Recordings of the wheel speed during ABS control show oscillations caused by the rapid pressure changes in the wheel brake cylinder. Investigations in lateral tire dynamics show a phase shift between the slip angle and the lateral tire force. These transients can not be explained by simulation if the usual stationary tire input-output behaviour is supposed. Thus the investigation of the oscillations requires a different approach to the modelling of the tire. In a first step measurements with an experimental car equipped with a computer for data acquisition and control and with various sensors - e.g. a Rotating Wheel Dynamometer - were carried out. The measurement results showed a correlation between the oscillations in the wheel speed and the braking force caused by the pressure pulses as well as high frequency oscillations in the lateral tire forces.

The increasing functionality and complexity of future electric/electronic architectures requires efficient methods and tools to support design decisions, which are taken in early development phases 6. For the past four years, a holistic approach for architecture development has been established at Mercedes-Benz Cars R&D department. At its core is a seamless design flow, including the conception, the analysis and the documentation for electric/electronic architectures. One of the actual challenges in the design of electric/electronic architectures concerns communication behavior and network topologies. The increasing data exchange between the ECUs creates high requirements for the networks. With the introduction of FlexRay 21 and Ethernet the automotive network architecture become a lot more heterogeneous. Especially gateways must fulfill many new requirements to handle the strict periodic schedule of FlexRay and the partly event-triggered communication on CAN-busses 23.
