Thermal Modeling of Power Steering System Performance

Power steering systems provide significant design challenges. They are detrimental to fuel economy since most require the continuous operation of a hydraulic pump. This generates heat that must be dissipated by fluid lines and heat exchangers. This paper presents a simple one-dimensional transient model for power steering components. The model accounts for the pump power, heat dissipation from fluid lines, the power steering cooler, and the influence of radiation heat from exhaust system components. The paper also shows how to use a transient thermal model of the entire system to simulate the temperatures during cyclic operation of the system. The implications to design, drive cycle simulation, and selection of components are highlighted.

Brake Dynamometer Test Variability Part 2- Description of the Influencing Factors

The ISO TC22/SWG2 - Brake Lining Committee established a task force to determine and analyze root causes for variability during dynamometer brake performance testing. SAE paper 2010-01-1697 “Brake Dynamometer Test Variability - Analysis of Root Causes” [1] presents the findings from the phases 1 and 2 of the “Test Variability Project.” The task force was created to address the issue of test variability and to establish possible ways to improve test-to-test and lab-to-lab correlation. This paper presents the findings from phase 3 of this effort-description of factors influencing test variability based on DOE study. This phase concentrated on both qualitative and quantitative description of the factors influencing friction coefficient measurements during dynamometer testing.

Advantages of the Alternative Method for Random Hardware Failures Quantitative Evaluation - a Practical Survey for EPS

Two methods are allowed in ISO 26262-5 for hardware analysis of random hardware failures. The 1st method is called “Evaluation of Probabilistic Metric for random Hardware Failures”. The 2nd method is called “Evaluation of each cause of safety goal violation”. Advantages of the 2nd method during development of ASIL D Generation 3 Electric Power Steering are presented in this paper. A reliability analysis is one of the important prerequisite for the hardware analysis and this paper shows the best practice for hardware part failure rate estimation using industry standards such as IEC TR 62380. The equally important focus is on a diagnostic coverage of each safety mechanism with respect to residual faults and with respect to relevant dual/latent point faults because any safety design can either benefit from low failure rates or from high diagnostic coverage of safety mechanism to mitigate faults. FMEA is highly recommended by ISO 26262-5 as a part of hardware analysis.

Mobility and Energy Efficiency Analysis of a Terrain Truck

While much research has focused on improving terrain mobility, energy and fuel efficiency of terrain trucks, only a limited amount of investigation has gone into analysis of power distribution between the driving wheels. Distribution of power among the driving wheels has been shown to have a significant effect on vehicle operating characteristics for a given set of operating conditions and total power supplied to the wheels. Wheel power distribution is largely a function of the design of the driveline power dividing units (PDUs). In this paper, 6×6/6×4 terrain truck models are analyzed with the focus on various combinations of PDUs and suspension systems. While these models were found to have some common features, they demonstrate several different approaches to driveline system design.

Electrically Powered Hydraulic Steering (EPHS) was developed in the early 90s and previously applied to vehicle segments B and C (small and medium-sized passenger cars). Till now more than 10 million vehicles are in the field. The advantages consist of the well known power density coming along with the flexible package. Value is added due to the consequent development and usage of electronic control realized in compact physical units. As a result key features for chassis control systems like controllability, high dynamic performance, and low energy consumption are achieved while maintaining mature and robust hydraulic components. Recent market requirements in other segments, e.g. Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) require higher powered motor pump units and lead to the decision to develop products in this direction.

New Method to Identify Dynamic Normal Stiffness and Damping of Shims for CAE Modeling

One of the most important means used for suppressing squeal noise in disc brakes is the application of shims on the pad backplates. In many cases this proves a very efficient tool depending on the type of shim applied in the specific cases. Building up knowledge on the effects of shims have been ongoing for several years, and measuring the important parameters characterizing the shims is crucial for understanding how to develop and implement the shims in an optimal way. Several methods are described in literature for measuring the constrained layer damping effect and one method is described for direct measurement of the shear stiffness and shear damping properties. However, up to now no method has been available that can measure and characterize the normal stiffness and damping properties of shims. This is one of the most important properties of shims as it controls the de-coupling effect in the direction of the normal forces.

Toward Requirements for a Web-based Icing Training Program for Flight Dispatchers

The Icing Branch at NASA Glenn Research Center has funded an exploratory effort to identify requirements for developing a flight dispatcher-centered web-based icing training program that would be available for all airspace users. Through research and discussions with personnel at airlines, target areas were identified as influences on the requirements for the training system: 1 Flight dispatchers' icing related judgments and decision-making; 2 Certification, new hire and recurrent flight dispatcher training with respect to icing; 3 Icing related weather sources and the problems that flight dispatchers may have in their interpretation; 4 Pedagogical strategies (such as flight dispatcher-centered scenario-based approaches) for delivering flight dispatcher training content; and 5 Concerns/constraints with respect to web-based training for flight dispatchers.

Analysis of upper extremity response under side air bag loading

Computer simulations, dummy experiments with a new enhanced upper extremity, and small female cadaver experiments were used to analyze the small female upper extremity response under side air bag loading. After establishing the initial position, three tests were performed with the 5th percentile female hybrid III dummy, and six experiments with small female cadaver subjects. A new 5th percentile female enhanced upper extremity was developed for the dummy experiments that included a two-axis wrist load cell in addition to the existing six-axis load cells in both the forearm and humerus. Forearm pronation was also included in the new dummy upper extremity to increase the biofidelity of the interaction with the handgrip. Instrumentation for both the cadaver and dummy tests included accelerometers and magnetohydrodynamic angular rate sensors on the forearm, humerus, upper and lower spine.

Trade-offs for Vehicle Stability Control Sensor Sets

Customers of new vehicles expect their vehicle to provide reliable operation. One path vehicle manufacturers have chosen to meet this expectation is to offer their customers advanced braking systems. Antilock Brakes (ABS) and Traction Control (TC) are two advanced braking systems that have evolved to a point at which many OEM's offer them as standard equipment. Size, weight, and performance have also improved to the point of near transparent operation in many cases. The current direction of braking system evolution is in making Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) widely available as well. VSC adds the ability to assist the driver in negotiating understeer and oversteer, by adding corrective braking and engine torque to the vehicle as appropriate. A large percentage of VSC system modeling is related to the sensors chosen to provide driver and vehicle dynamic information to the system's electronic control unit (ECU).

Brake Rattle: Vibration and Noise Testing

The continuous decrease in background noise levels inside vehicles has made other noise sources easily noticeable. Specifically, foundation brake rattle noise is a growing concern to the customer. This brake rattle is primarily due to rigid body impact between brake components. Currently, vehicle and brake manufacturing companies use different testing procedures to evaluate brake rattle that include laboratory vibration shakers, full vehicle shakers (four post), chassis dynamometers and vehicle road testing. These evaluations are subjective in most cases. A method is needed to replicate and quantify vehicle brake rattle in the laboratory to help determine the acceptability of a brake system at a component level. This approach would also help to identify the root cause for brake rattle and evaluate design changes to address that rattle. Some guidelines for better quantifying brake rattle using shakers will be proposed in this paper.

Comparative Evaluation of Dummy Response with Thor-Lx/HIIIr and Hybrid III Lower Extremities

Multiple series of frontal sled tests were performed to evaluate the new Thor-Lx/HIIIr lower extremity developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for retrofit use on the 50th percentile male Hybrid III. This study's objective was to compare the Thor-Lx/HIIIr to the existing Hybrid III dummy leg (HIII) from the standpoint of repeatability and effects on femur and upper body response values.\ The test-to-test repeatability of the dummy responses, as measured by the coefficient of variation (CV), was generally acceptable (CV < 10%) for all of the test conditions for both legs. Overall, tests with the Thor-Lx/HIIIr legs produced upper body movement and injury criteria values for the head and chest that were acceptably consistent and were generally indistinguishable from those produced with the HIII leg. Low right femur loads, which ranged from 4 to 25 percent of the injury assessment reference value, varied substantially test-to-test for tests with both types of legs.

Load Distribution-Specific Viscoelastic Characterization of the Hybrid III Chest

This paper presents a load distribution-specific viscoelastic structural characterization of the Hybrid III 50th percentile male anthropomorphic test dummy thorax. The dummy is positioned supine on a high-speed material testing machine and ramp-and-hold tests are performed using a distributed load, a hub load, and a diagonal belt load applied to the anterior thorax of the dummy. The force-deflection response is shown to be linear viscoelastic for all loading conditions when the internal dummy instrumentation is used to measure chest deflection. When an externally measured displacement (i.e., a measurement that includes the superficial skin material) is used for the characterization, a quasilinear viscoelastic characterization is necessary. Linear and quasilinear viscoelastic model coefficients are presented for all three loading conditions.

This review can help analysts to choose right methods and decide new lines of method development. For completeness, analytic methods dealing with continuum models are also briefly covered. This review was made from those papers that the authors are familiar with. It is not meant to be all-inclusive even though the best possible effort has been attempted.

Methodology for Measuring Tibial and Fibular Loads in a Cadaver

Crash test dummies rely on biomechanical data from cadaver studies to biofidelically reproduce loading and predict injury. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain equivalent measurements of leg loading in a dummy and a cadaver, particularly for bending moments. A methodology is presented here to implant load cells in the tibia and fibula while minimally altering the functional anatomy of the two bones. The location and orientation of the load cells can be measured in all six degrees of freedom from post-test radiographs. Equations are given to transform tibial and fibular load cell measurements from a cadaver or dummy to a common leg coordinate frame so that test data can be meaningfully compared.

Geometrical Personalization of Pedestrian Finite Element Models Using Morphing Increases the Biofidelity of Their Impact Kinematics

Pedestrian finite element models (PFEM) are used to investigate and predict the injury outcomes from vehicle-pedestrian impact. As postmortem human surrogates (PMHS) differ in anthropometry across subjects, it is believed that the biofidelity of PFEM cannot be properly evaluated by comparing a generic anthropometry model against the specific PMHS test data. Global geometric personalization can scale the PFEM geometry to match the height and weight of a specific PMHS, while local geometric personalization via morphing can modify the PFEM geometry to match specific PMHS anatomy. The goal of the current study was to evaluate the benefit of morphed PFEM compared to globally-scaled and generic PFEM by comparing the kinematics against PMHS test results. The AM50 THUMS PFEM (v4.01) was used as a baseline for anthropometry, and personalized PFEM were created to the anthropometric specifications of two obese PMHS used in a previous pedestrian impact study using a mid-size sedan.

A Simulation-Based Calibration and Sensitivity Analysis of a Finite Element Model of THOR Head-Neck Complex

The THOR-NT dummy has been developed and continuously improved by NHTSA to provide automotive manufacturers an advanced tool that can be used to assess the injury risk of vehicle occupants in crash tests. With the recent improvements of finite element (FE) technology and the increase of computational power, a validated FE model of THOR may provide an efficient tool for the design optimization of vehicles and their restraint systems. The main goal of this study was to improve biofidelity of a head-neck FE model of THOR-NT dummy. A three-dimensional FE model of the head and neck was developed in LS-Dyna based on the drawings of the THOR dummy. The material properties of deformable parts and the joints properties between rigid parts were assigned initially based on data found in the literature, and then calibrated using optimization techniques.

Open-Loop Chestbands for Dynamic Deformation Measurements

Originally designed for measuring closed-loop contours such as those around a human thorax, the External Peripheral Instrument for Deformation Measurement (EPIDM), or chestband, was developed to improve the measurement of dummy and cadaver thoracic response during impact. In the closed-loop configuration, the chestband wraps around on itself forming a closed contour. This study investigates the use of the chestband for dynamic deformation measurements in an open-loop configuration. In the open-loop configuration, the chestband does not generally form a closed contour. This work includes enhanced procedures and algorithms for the calculation of chestband deformation contours including the determination of static and dynamic chestband contours under several boundary conditions.

Research Program to Investigate Lower Extremity Injuries

The University of Virginia is investigating the biomechanical response and the injury tolerance of the lower extremities. This paper presents the experimental and simulation work used to study the injury patterns and mechanisms of the ankle/foot complex. The simulation effort has developed a segmented lower limb and foot model for an occupant simulator program to study the interactions of the foot with intruding toepan and pedal components. The experimental procedures include static tests, pendulum impacts, and full-scale sled tests with the Advanced Anthropomorphic Test Device and human cadavers. In these tests, the response of the lower extremities is characterized with analogous dummy and cadaver instrumentation packages that include strain gauges, electrogoniometers, angular rate sensors, accelerometers, and load cells. An external apparatus is applied to the surrogate's lower extremities to simulate the effects of muscle tensing.
