Disturbance Estimation Based Modeling Technique for Control and Prediction in Controllable Mechanical Turbo-Compounding System

Modeling techniques matter a lot in many fields of engine engineering. Models are requested not only for control design but also for dynamic prediction. However, problems might be encountered during modeling process either because of the system complexity or the unaffordable modeling cost. As a result, a new modeling technique based on disturbance estimation is proposed in this paper. By employing the proposed modeling technique, models are set up in real time with the online information from input and output. The uncertainties of system dynamics are handled as internal disturbance of the system, while the perturbation from outside are taken as the external disturbance, and the combination of the two can be estimated online by a kind of active observer called extended state observer (ESO).

Front Rail Crashworthiness Design for Front Oblique Impact Using a Magic Cube Approach

The front rail, as one main energy absorption component of vehicle front structures, should present steady progressive collapse along its axis and avoid bending collapse during the front oblique impact, but when the angle of loading direction is larger than some critical angle, it will appear bending collapse causing reduced capability of crash energy absorption. This paper is concerned with crashworthiness design of the front rail on a vehicle chassis frame structure considering uncertain crash directions. The objective is to improve the crash direction adaptability of the front rail, without deteriorating the vehicle's crashworthiness performance. Magic Cube (MQ) approach, a systematic design approach, is conducted to analyze the design problem. By applying Space Decomposition of MQ, an equivalent model of the vehicle chassis frame is generated, which simplifies the design problem.

Research on Trajectory Planning and Tracking Strategy of Lane-changing and Overtaking based on PI-MPC Dual Controllers

Aiming at the problem of poor robustness after the combination of lateral kinematics control and lateral dynamics control when an autonomous vehicle decelerates and changes lanes to overtake at a certain distance. This paper proposes a trajectory determination and tracking control method based on a PI-MPC dual algorithm controller. To describe the longitudinal deceleration that satisfies the lateral acceleration limit during a certain distance of lane change, firstly, a fifth-order polynomial and a uniform deceleration motion formula are established to express the lateral and longitudinal displacements, and a model prediction controller (MPC) is used to output the front wheel rotation angle. Through the dynamic formula and the speed proportional-integral (PI) controller to control and adjust the brake pressure.

Crushing Analysis and Lightweight Design of Tapered Tailor Welded Hybrid Material Tubes under Oblique Impact

The increasing demand for lightweight design of the whole vehicle has raised critical weight reduction targets for crash components such as front rails without deteriorating their crash performances. To this end the last few years have witnessed a huge growth in vehicle body structures featuring hybrid materials including steel and aluminum alloys. In this work, a type of tapered tailor-welded tube (TTWT) made of steel and aluminum alloy hybrid materials was proposed to maximize the specific energy absorption (SEA) and to minimize the peak crushing force (PCF) in an oblique crash scenario. The hybrid tube was found to be more robust than the single material tubes under oblique impacts using validated finite element (FE) models. Compared with the aluminum alloy tube and the steel tube, the hybrid tube can increase the SEA by 46.3% and 86.7%, respectively, under an impact angle of 30°.

Multi-Objective Optimization Design of Hybrid Material Bumper for Pedestrian Protection and Crashworthiness Design

In vehicle accident, the bumper beam generally requires high stiffness for sufficient survival space for occupants while it may cause serious pedestrian lower extremity injuries. The aim of this study is to promote an aluminum-steel hybrid material double-hat bumper to meet the comprehensive requirements. The hybrid bumper is designed to improve the frontal crash and pedestrian protection performances in collision accidents. Finite element (FE) models of the hybrid bumper was built, validated, and integrated into an automotive model. The Fixed Deformable Barrier (FDB) and Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) legform model were used to obtain the vehicle crashworthiness and pedestrian lower leg injury indicators. Numerical results showed that the hybrid bumper had a great potential for crashworthiness performance and pedestrian protection characteristics. Based on this, a multi-objective optimization design (MOD) was performed to search the optimal geometric parameters.

Research on Hierarchical Control of Automobile Automatic Emergency Braking System Based on V2V

In order to ensure braking efficiency and improve the comfort of drivers and passengers, a two-stage braking grading control system was proposed. In the upper controller, the enhanced time-to-collision model under different working conditions was designed, and the braking threshold was determined considering the comfort of braking drivers and passengers, and the driver’s braking behavior was analyzed to determine the vehicle braking deceleration. The vehicle longitudinal dynamic model was built in the lower layer, the PID controller was used to reduce the model deviation. This paper improves the test standard on the basis of China-New Car Assessment Program. The results show that the remaining relative distance between the two vehicles was in the safe range. The control strategy can achieve collision avoidance of vehicle emergency braking.

Effects of Fuel Composition on Mixture Formation in a Firing Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition (DISI) Engine: An Experimental Study using Mie-Scattering and Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) Techniques

Two-dimensional Mie-scattering and laser-induced fluorescence techniques were applied to investigate the effects of fuel composition on mixture formation within a firing direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engine. A comparison was made between the spray characteristics and in-cylinder fuel distributions resulting from the use of a typical multi-component gasoline (European specification premium-grade unleaded), a single-component research fuel (iso-octane), and a three-component research fuel (iso-pentane, iso-octane and n-nonane). Studies were performed at three different injection timings under cold and part-warm conditions. The results indicate that fuel composition affects both the initial spray formation and the subsequent mixture formation process. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the mixing process to the effects of fuel volatility was shown to depend on injection timing.

A Numerical Investigation of the Vaporization Process of Lubricating Oil Droplets under Gas Engine Conditions

The abnormal combustion resulted by the auto-ignition of lubricating oil is a great challenge to the development of Otto-cycle gas engines. In order to investigate the mechanism of lubricating oil droplet vaporization process, a crucial sub-process of auto-ignition process, a new multi-component vaporization model was constructed for high temperature and pressure, and forced gas flow conditions as encountered in practical gas engines. The vaporization model has been conducted with a multi-diffusion sub-model considering the multi-component diffusivity coefficients in the gas phase. The radiation heat flux caused by ambient gas was taken into account in high temperature conditions, and a real gas equation of state was used for high pressure conditions. A correction for mass vaporization rate was used for forced gas flow conditions. Extensive verifications have been realized, and considerable results have been achieved.

Non-Spherical Particle Trajectory Modelling for Ice Crystal Conditions

Aircraft icing is a significant issue for aviation safety. In this paper, recent developments for calculating the trajectory of non-spherical particles are used to determine the trajectory and impingement of ice crystals in aircraft icing scenarios. Two models are used, each formulated from direct numerical simulations, to give the drag, lift and torque correlations for various shaped particles. Previously, within the range of Reynolds number permitted in this study, it was only possible to model the trajectory and full rotational progression of cylindrical particles. The work presented in this paper allows for analysis of a wider range of ice shapes that are commonly seen in icing conditions, capturing the dynamics and behaviours specific to ice crystals. Previous limitations relate to the in ability to account for particle rotation and the dependency of force correlations on the measure of particle sphericity - which are now overcome.

Automatic Emergency Collision Avoidance of Four-Wheel Steering Based on Model Following Control

In order to improve the performance of automatic emergency steering and collision avoidance of intelligent vehicle, two automatic steering control methods under ideal model following control are proposed. The two ideal reference models are the reference model with zero sideslip angle of vehicle gravity center and the reference model with no phase-lag in vehicle lateral acceleration. The control system adopts the combination of outer loop and inner loop. In the design of the outer loop controller, the optimal control is used to get the steering wheel angle needed to avoid collision. The inner loop controller uses feedforward and feedback control to get the required front and rear wheel steering angles. Taking vehicle two degrees of freedom (DOF) lateral dynamics model as the research object, the vehicle collision avoidance reference trajectory is obtained through the fifth-degree polynomial.

A Concise Camera-Radar Fusion Framework for Object Detection and Data Association

Multi-sensor fusion strategies have gradually become a consensus in autonomous driving research. Among them, radar-camera fusion has attracted wide attention for its improvement on the dimension and accuracy of perception at a lower cost, however, the processing and association of radar and camera data has become an obstacle to related research. Our approach is to build a concise framework for camera and radar detection and data association: for visual object detection, the state-of-the-art YOLOv5 algorithm is further improved and works as the image detector, and before the fusion process, the raw radar reflection data is projected onto image plane and hierarchically clustered, then the projected radar echoes and image detection results are matched based on the Hungarian algorithm. Thus, the category of objects and their corresponding distance and speed information can be obtained, providing reliable input for subsequent object tracking task.

Measurement Methods for Radar Cross Section of Passenger Vehicles

Automotive millimeter-wave radar is used extensively in vehicle active safety. The Radar Cross Section (RCS) is one of the main parameters used by the automotive radar system to detect and identify surrounding vehicles. The RCS describes the electromagnetic scattering properties of objects. This paper describes a method and equipment to measure the RCS. An automobile-grade radar is used to measure the RCS of typical vehicles. A representative distance between the radar and the vehicle was chosen based on the analysis of the RCS of passenger vehicles in different distances in the near field. A cost-effective rotating platform was developed to rotate the passenger vehicles for RCS measurement in different azimuth angles. The RCS generated by the rotating platform was analyzed and mitigated. The measurement system can record the synchronized azimuth angle and RCS measurement.
