Evaluation of Flow Paths due to Leakages of Flammable Liquids by the SPH Method: Application to Real Engines

One of the most important safety issues for automotive engineering is to avoid any fire due to the ignition of flammable liquids, which may result from leaks. Fire risk is a combination of hot temperature, fast vaporisation and accumulation of vapor in a cavity. In IC engines, potentially flammable liquids are fuel and oil. To guarantee safety, flammable liquids must not come into contact with hot parts of the engine. Consequently, shields are designed to guide the flow path of possible leakages and to take any flammable liquid out of the hot areas. Simulation is a great help to optimize the shape of the shield by investigating a large number of possible leakages rapidly. Recent breakthroughs in numerical methods make it possible to apply simulations to industrial design concepts. The employed approach is based on the Lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method.

Application of Adaptive Kalman Filter for Estimation of Power Train Variables

The paper presents the estimator design procedures for automotive power train systems based on the adaptive Kalman filter. The Kalman filter adaptation is based on a simple and robust algorithm that detects sudden changes of power train variables. The adaptive Kalman filter has been used to estimate the SI engine load torque and air mass flow, and also the tire traction force and road condition. The presented experimental results indicate that proposed estimators are characterized by favorable response speeds and good noise suppression abilities.

More and more high-level algorithms are emerging to improve the existing systems in a car. Often these algorithms only need a platform with a bus connection and some resources such as CPU time and memory space. These functions can easily be integrated into existing systems that have free resources. This paper describes some encapsulation techniques and mechanisms that can be used in the automotive domain. The discussion also takes into account the additional resources consumed on the microcontroller to meet these requirements and by the software to implement the encapsulation mechanisms. Overviews of some general concepts of software-architectures that provide encapsulation are also shown.

With the ever increasing amount of available software processing resources in a vehicle, more and more high-level algorithms are emerging to improve the existing systems in a car. Often these algorithms only need a platform with a bus connection and some resources such as processing power and memory space. These functions are predestined to be integrated into existing systems that have free resources. This paper will examine the role of time protection in these multi-algorithm systems and describe what timing protection means and why it is required. The processing time will be partitioned to the different processing levels like interrupts, services and tasks. The problems of timing protection will be illustrated as well as its limitations. The conflict between real-time requirements and timing protection will be shown. Finally Autosar will be examined with focus on timing protection and applicability in actual development projects.

Modern powertrain noise investigation in the development process and during trouble shooting is a combination of experiment and simulation. In simulation in recent years main focus was set on model completeness, consideration of all excitation mechanisms and efficient and stabile numerical algorithms. By that the total response of the virtual powertrain is already comparable to the overall noise level of the real powertrain. Actual challenge is to trace back the overall response to its main excitation and noise generating mechanism as well as to their main driving parameters to support the engineer not only in reaching absolute values, but also to derive the root cause of a response or potential problem and to get hints on how to improve the specific behavior. Approaches by parameter sensitivity studies are time consuming and not unambiguous.

Combining Regenerative Braking and Anti-Lock Braking for Enhanced Braking Performance and Efficiency

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a widespread driver assistance system which allows a short braking distance while simultaneously maintaining the stability and steerability of the car. Vehicles with electric single-wheel drive offer many possibilities of improving the energy efficiency and the braking performance during ABS braking. In this paper, two different ways of including the electric machines in the ABS are analyzed in detail: the damping of torsional drive train vibrations in combination with recuperation and the dynamic split of the braking torque, where the hydraulic braking torque is kept constant and the dynamic modulation of the braking torque is performed by the electric machines. The damping algorithm is developed on the basis of a linearized model of the drive train and the tire-road contact by using state feedback and pole placement methods. Simulation results with a detailed multi-body system show the effectiveness of the control algorithms.

Design and Comparative Study of Yaw Rate Control Systems with Various Actuators

The vehicle dynamics control systems are traditionally based upon utilizing wheel brakes as actuators. However, there has been recently strong interest in the automotive industry for introduction of other vehicle dynamics actuators, in order to improve the overall vehicle stability, responsiveness, and agility features. This paper considers various actuators such as active rear and central differentials and active front and rear steering, and proposes design of related yaw rate control systems. Different control subsystems such as reference model, feedback and feedforward control, allocation algorithm, and time-varying controller limit are discussed. The designed control systems are verified and compared by computer simulation for double lane change and slalom maneuvers.

Dynamic Programming Versus Linear Programming Application for Charging Optimization of EV Fleet Represented by Aggregate Battery

This paper deals with a thorough analysis of using two fundamentally different algorithms for optimization of electric vehicle (EV) fleet charging. The first one is linear programming (LP) algorithm which is particularly suitable for solving linear optimization problems, and the second one is dynamic programming (DP) which can guarantee the global optimality of a solution for a general nonlinear optimization problem with non-convex constraints. Functionality of the considered algorithms is demonstrated through a case study related to a delivery EV fleet, which is modelled through the aggregate battery modeling approach, and for which realistic driving data are available. The algorithms are compared in terms of execution time and charging cost achieved, thus potentially revealing more appropriate algorithm for real-time charging applications.

SI Engine Load Torque Estimator Based on Adaptive Kalman Filter and Its Application to Idle Speed Control

The paper presents a detailed design procedure of an SI engine load torque estimator based on an adaptive Kalman filter. The adaptation mechanism is based on a simple and robust load torque change detection algorithm. The presented simulation and experimental results point out that the estimator is characterized by a fast response and good noise suppression. The proposed estimator is used to establish a fast load torque compensation path in an idle speed control system. The presented simulation and experimental results show that this yields a significant improvement of idle speed control performance

Tackling the Complexity of Timing-Relevant Deployment Decisions in Multicore-Based Embedded Automotive Software Systems

Multicore-based ECUs are increasingly used in embedded automotive software systems to allow more demanding automotive applications at moderate cost and energy consumption. Using a high number of parallel processors together with a high number of executed software components results in a practically unmanageable number of deployment alternatives to choose from. However correct deployment is one important step for reaching timing goals and acceptable latency, both also a must to reach safety goals of safety-relevant automotive applications. In this paper we focus at reducing the complexity of deployment decisions during the phases of allocation and scheduling. We tackle this complexity of deployment decisions by a mixed constructive and analytic approach.

High Performance Linearization Procedure for Emission Analyzers

Increasing requirements for the result quality of exhaust emission analyzers and state of the art analyzer technology require a new point of view regarding measuring range definitions and linearization procedures. To make best use of the power of this analyzer technology, linearization procedures need reconsideration. In certification laboratories, legislation defines the procedures to linearize an exhaust emission analyzer more or less stringently. On the other hand, on testbeds for development purposes there are many possibilities for making use of today's improved analyzers. However, procedures are often used in development labs that are very similar to those mentioned in the legislation. For some measurement purposes it is necessary to leave these procedures regarding measuring ranges and their specifications behind. The exhaust gas analyzing system has to provide consistent result quality during the whole test procedure.

Surface Energy Influence on Supercooled Water Crystallization: A Computational Study

Numerical experiments have been presently conducted aiming at studying the influence of the surface energy on the crystallization process of supercooled water in terms of the supercooling degrees. The mathematical model consists primarily of the equation governing the thermal energy field solved independently in both phases in accordance with the two-scalar approach by utilizing the Stefan condition at the interface to couple both temperature fields. The computational algorithm relying on the level-set method for solid-liquid interface capturing has been appropriately upgraded aiming at accuracy level increase with respect to the discretization of the thermal energy equation and the normal-to-interface derivative of the temperature field. The model describes the freezing mechanism under supercooled conditions, relying on the physical and mathematical description of the two-phase moving-boundary approach.

Plant Modeling for Closed Loop Combustion Control - A Thermodynamic Consistent and Real-Time Capable Approach

Direct injection Diesel engines are a propulsion technology that is continuously developed to meet emission standards. Great optimization potential lies in the combustion process itself. The application of closed loop combustion control allows reacting online to environmental conditions and stabilizing the combustion regarding performance and emissions. Dedicated real-time plant models help to develop and calibrate control algorithms in office and hardware in the loop environments. The present work describes a real-time capable, crank-angle resolved engine, cylinder and combustion model. The cylinder applies an 0D, two-zone approach and a phenomenological combustion model describes ignition delay, premixed and diffusive combustion. The latter is enhanced by a quasi-dimensional description of the injection spray. The model is validated with dedicated measurements. The plant model is applied in two use-cases for closed loop combustion control.

Development of Numerical Framework for Research of the Pre-Chamber SI Combustion

A promising strategy for increasing thermal efficiency and decreasing emissions of a spark ignited (SI) internal combustion engine is the application of lean mixtures. The flammability limit of lean mixtures can be increased by using an active pre-chamber containing an injector and a spark plug, resulting in a combustion mode commonly called Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI). The optimization of the combustion chamber shape and operating parameters for TJI combustion can be a demanding task, since the number of design parameters is significantly increased and is today supported by numerical simulations. In this paper, the process of the development of a numerical framework based on 3D CFD and 1D/0D numerical models that will support the research of the pre-chamber design and optimization of operating parameters will be shown. For 3D CFD modelling the AVL Fire™ code is employed, where the full combustion chamber model with intake and exhaust ports of the experimental engine is prepared.

Numerical Analysis of Combustion Process in the Dual Fuel Internal Combustion Engine

Fully flexible dual fuel (DF) internal combustion (IC) engines, that can burn diesel and gas simultaneously, have become established among heavy-duty engines as they contribute significantly to lower the environmental impact of the transport sector. In order to gain better understanding of the DF combustion process and establish an effective design methodology for DFIC engines, high fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation tools are needed. The DF strategy poses new challenges for numerical modelling of the combustion process since all combustion regimes have to be modelled simultaneously. Furthermore, DF engines exhibit higher cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV) compared to the pure diesel engines. This issue can be addressed by employing large eddy simulation coupled with appropriate DF detailed chemistry mechanism. However, such an approach is computationally too expensive for today’s industry-related engine calculations.
