A Study of HCCI Combustion Using Spectroscopic Measurements and Chemical Kinetic Simulations: Effects of Fuel Composition, Engine Speed and Cylinder Pressure on Low-temperature Oxidation Reactions and Autoignition

The Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine is positioned as a next-generation internal combustion engine and has been the focus of extensive research in recent years to develop a practical system. One reason is that this new combustion system achieves lower fuel consumption and simultaneous reductions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions, which are major issues of internal combustion engines today. However, the characteristics of HCCI combustion can prevent suitable engine operation owing to the rapid combustion process that occurs accompanied by a steep pressure rise when the amount of fuel injected is increased to obtain higher power output. A major issue of HCCI is to control this rapid combustion so that the quantity of fuel injected can be increased for greater power. Controlling the ignition timing is also an issue because it is substantially influenced by the chemical reactions of the fuel.

The Influence of Hot Gas Jet on Combustion Enhancement for Lean Mixture in Plasma Jet Ignition

This study clarified the influence of hot gas jet on combustion enhancement effect for lean mixture in the plasma jet ignition. The hot gas jet was generated by the high temperature plasma and was ejected from igniter after plasma jet finished issuing. In combustion tests, propane-air mixture at equivalence ratio of 0.6 was used and the mixture was filled in the combustion chamber at atmosphere pressure and room temperature. For generation of the hot gas jet, the standard air was filled in chamber at same conditions and the hot gas jet was visualized by schlieren method in the absence of combustion. The combustion development processes were also visualized and the combustion pressure was measured. The discharge voltage, discharge current and the plasma luminescence were also measured. The plasma luminescence disappeared within 0.05 ms for any experimental conditions. When cavity depth was deep and orifice diameter was small, the maximum plasma luminescence height was short.

Study on Combustion and Exhaust Gas Emission Characteristics of Lean Gasoline-Air Mixture Ignited by Diesel Fuel Direct Injection

The uniform lean gasoline-air mixture was provided to diesel engine and was ignited by direct diesel fuel injection. The mixing region that is formed by diesel fuel penetration and entrainment of ambient mixture is regarded as combustible turbulent jet. The ignition occurs in this region and the ambient lean mixture is burned by flame propagation. The lean mixture of air-fuel ratio between 150 and 35 could be ignited and burned by this ignition method. An increase of diesel fuel injection is effective to ensure combustion and ignition. As diesel fuel injection increases, HC concentration decreases, and NOx and CO concentration increases.

Improvement of Engine Performance With Lean Mixture Ignited By Diesel Fuel Injection and Internal Egr

The uniform lean methanol-air mixture was provided to the diesel engine and was ignited by the direct diesel fuel injection. The internal EGR is added to this ignition method in order to activate the fuel in the mixture and to increase the mixture temperature. The test engine was a 4-stroke, single- cylinder direct-injection diesel engine. The cooling system was forced-air cooling and displacement volume was about 211 (cm3). The compression ratio was about 19.9:1. The experiment was made under constant engine speed of 3000 (r/min). The boost pressure was maintained at 101.3 (kPa). Five values of mass flow rate of diesel fuel injection were selected from 0.060 (g/s) to 0.167 (g/s) and five levels of back pressure: 0), 26.7, 53.3, 80.0 and 106.6 (kPa) were selected for the experiment. The effect of internal EGR is varied by the back pressure level.

Engine Performance of Lean Methanol-Air Mixture Ignited by Diesel Fuel Injection Applied with Internal EGR

The uniform lean methanol-air mixture was provided to the diesel engine and was ignited by direct diesel fuel injection. In this study, the internal EGR is added to this ignition method in order to activate the fuel in the mixture and to increase the temperature of the mixture before the ignition. It is confirmed that the lean methanol-air mixture of air-fuel ratio between 130 and 18 could be ignited and burned when the back pressure of 80 [kPa] is added. The ignition and combustion characteristics can be improved by the internal EGR, however the engine performance and NOx emission deteriorated.

It is confirmed that the lean mixture of air-fuel ratio between 150 and 40 could be ignited and burned by this ignition method when the back pressure of 80 [kPa] is added, and the burning period is shorted by internal EGR. However, as the back pressure increases, NOx concentration is increased by the high temperature residual gas.

Study on Realization of Dual Combustion Cycle by Lean Mixture and Direct Fuel Injection

The purpose of this study is to realize dual-combustion cycle for gasoline engines. For the purpose, lean combustion and direct fuel injection were applied to small diesel engine. The lean gasoline-air mixture was provided and was ignited by small amount of pilot diesel fuel injection (constant volume combustion). Then, diesel fuel was injected by main injection and was burned with the remained oxygen after the lean combustion (diffusion combustion). The equivalence ratio 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 of mixture were used to avoid the spontaneous compression auto-ignition. The total equivalence ratio with supplied gasoline and diesel fuel was adjusted to 1.0. The base pilot injection timing was selected as the ignition of pre-mixture took place at T.D.C. and pilot injection timings were changed 2 degree before and behind of base timing. The main fuel injection timings were 50, 75 and 100% of the duration between pilot injection timing and T.D.C.

8 A Study of the Influence of Fuel Temperature on Emission Characteristics and Engine Performance of Compression Ignition Engine

In this study, the heated fuels were provided to the diesel engine in order to activate the fuel before the injection. Two test fuels: the normal diesel fuel and cetane, which have different boiling points were used. For both normal diesel fuel and cetane, crank angles at ignition and maximum pressure are delayed and the maximum combustion pressure is decreased as the fuel temperature rises. In cases of large and middle mass flow rate of fuel injection, the brake thermal efficiency and brake mean effective pressure are decreased when the fuel temperature is higher than 570 [K]. However, in the case of small mass flow rate of fuel injection, the brake thermal efficiency is almost independent of fuel temperature. HC and CO concentrations in the exhaust gas emission show constant values regardless of fuel temperature. However, NOx concentration is gradually decreased as the fuel temperature rises.

54 The Combustion Phenomena Under Corona Discharge Application

In this study, the effect of corona discharge on the combustion phenomenon has been made clear. A homogeneous propane-air mixture was used and six equivalence ratios were tested. For generating the positive and negative corona discharge, a non-uniform electric field was applied to the combustion chamber by the needle to plane gap. One or five needle-shaped electrodes were used to change the corona discharge state. When the positive corona discharge was applied, the luminescence from corona with five electrodes was weak as compared with that of one needle-shaped electrode. When the negative corona discharge was applied, the luminescence from corona and combustion were not affected by the number of electrode. When the positive corona discharge was applied by low voltage, the combustion was improved in the case of one needle-shaped electrode, but the index of combustion with one needle-shaped electrode was almost equal to that of five electrodes when the high voltage was applied.

The Influence of High Voltage Electrical Field on the Flame Propagation

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the development process of hot kernel generated by the laser induced breakdown and to clarify the relationship between corona discharge application and flame propagation. The mixture can be ignited by the laser induced breakdown. Nd:YAG laser is used for the ignition and laser light is optically focused on the central part of combustion chamber by a plano convex lens. The hot kernel is observed in the absence of combustion and is rapidly developed into the laser incidence side. The homogeneous propane-air mixture is used and six equivalence ratios between 0.7 and 1.5 are tested. For generating the positive corona discharge in the combustion chamber, a non-uniform electric field is applied by the needle to plane gap. In a lean mixture, the whole flame front shifts to downward from the breakdown point and, in the rich mixture region, the combustion is strongly enhanced.

The Fuel Injection System Using the High-Voltage Electrical Discharge

The new fuel injection method which is using the high-voltage electrical discharge has been proposed. The plasma jet ignition technology is applied to this injection system, and the component parts of fuel injector are similar to the plasma jet igniter. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the spray characteristics and the fuel injection development processes of this injection method. To obtain the influence of injector configuration and supplied electrical discharge energy on the fuel spray, the fuel is ejected into the open atmosphere and fuel injection development process is visualized by the schlieren method. The penetration depth, maximum width and projected area of fuel spay increase with increasing in the electrical discharge energy and an orifice diameter. In the case at which the large electrical discharge energy is provided, the fuel injection is finished within a short duration and the mean fuel spray velocity becomes fast.

The Effect of Corona Discharge on Pre-Mixed Combustion

The flame propagation behavior of hydrogen-air and propane-air mixtures under application of high-voltage non-uniform electric field was explored by using combustion vessel. Both mixtures were ignited by laser-induced breakdown of Nd:YAG laser. In a case of propane-air mixture, top of flame front was drawn to the electrode and bottom of flame front was expanded. In a case of hydrogen-air mixture, the wrinkle caused by the preferential diffusion was enhanced by corona discharge, however the entire flame front was merely moved toward downward by corona wind. Therefore, the non-uniform electric field strongly influences charged particles originated in hydrocarbon of propane-air mixture.

A Study of IDI 2-Stroke Cycle Compression Ignition Engine with DME

DME is alternate fuel for diesel engines, however DME has defects such as small lower calorific value, inferior lubricity and weak fuel penetration. To compensate disadvantages, In-direct injection 2-stroke diesel engine with low pressure fuel injection system was proposed. The fuel injection timing near TDC gave good performance because the heat loss of low temperature oxidation reaction reduced. The brake torque and brake thermal efficiency of 2-stroke IDI diesel engine were lower than those of 4-stroke engine. However, the exhaust gas emissions were very low level because the intake air leaked through the exhaust port and the exhaust gas was diluted.

The Diffusion Combustion Induced by the High Voltage Electrical Discharge - The Influence of Fuel Property on Combustion Behavior -

A new diffusion combustion method characterized by plasma jet ignition is proposed. In this new diffusion combustion, the fuel is injected and ignited by the high-voltage electrical discharge, so this combustion method can be applied for various fuels which have different ignitability. Tests were carried out with seven fuels by using a combustion bomb. When a small orifice was used, fuels which had branched chain molecular structure were hardly ignited. In case of large orifice, all test fuels were surely ignited, and the maximum combustion pressures of branched chain structure molecular fuels were higher than those of straight chain structure molecular fuel.

The Effects of Electric Fields on Flame Propagation of Homogeneous Hydrogen-Air Mixture

The flame propagation behavior of homogeneous hydrogen-air mixture under application of high-voltage uniform or non-uniform electric field was explored by using combustion vessel. When a uniform electric field was applied, two plate electrodes were attached to ceiling and bottom of combustion chamber and, to apply a non-uniform electric field, an electrode in ceiling was needle-shaped and an electrode in bottom was plate-shaped. The positive or negative polarity DC high voltage was applied for an electrode in ceiling. When a positive polarity non-uniform electric field was applied to the mixture at any equivalence ratios and the input voltage was higher than 12 kV, the flame propagation was enhanced in the downward direction. This is because the corona wind was generated from the tip of needle-shaped electrode to grounded electrode by the brush corona.

Study on Performance of Diesel Engine Applied with Emulsified Diesel Fuel: The Influence of Fuel Injection Timing and Water Contents

The application of emulsified fuel for diesel engines is expected to reduce NOx and soot simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to clarify the influence of water content in emulsified fuel and fuel injection timing on diesel engine performance. The engine performance of emulsified fuel was compared with the water injection method. In the water injection test, water was injected to intake manifold and diesel fuel was directly injected into combustion chamber. Two emulsified fuels of which mixing ratio of water and emulsifier to diesel fuel were 15 and 30 vol.% were tested. Engine performance and exhaust gas emission of water injection method were almost similar to those of diesel fuel, so that water presented in combustion chamber had almost no influence on engine performance. Therefore, it can be considered that the micro explosion of fuel droplet enhanced the fuel atomization and mixing of fuel and air.

Study on Flame Behavior Control by the Electric Field

The purpose of this study is to elucidate flame propagation behavior of homogeneous propane-air mixture under application of non-uniform electric field. A needle-shaped electrode was attached to the ceiling and a plate electrode was set at bottom of combustion chamber, so that the electric field was applied in the direction of the chamber's vertical axis. A homogeneous propane-air mixture was supplied at equivalence ratio of 1.0 and was ignited by leaser induced breakdown under atmospheric pressure and room temperature. It was found that the flame front and plate electrode were repelled each other and a thin air layer was formed between the flame and plate electrode when a relatively low positive DC non-uniform electric field was applied to the needle-shaped electrode. It might be thought that the induced current was generated in the flame front, so that the flame front and plate electrode repelled each other.

The Possibility for Realization of Dual Combustion Cycle for Spark Ignition Engine

The purpose of this study is to operate the spark ignition engine by the dual combustion cycle. The dual combustion cycle has two combustion processes, these are the constant volume combustion and the constant pressure combustion. The lean combustion and the direct fuel injection were applied to realize the dual combustion cycle for spark ignition engines. The combustion of lean mixture was corresponding to the constant volume combustion. The fuel was directly injected to combustion chamber and was burned with the remained oxygen after the lean combustion, so that this was corresponding to the constant pressure diffusion combustion. The combustion experiments were conducted by using the constant volume vessel. The lean propane-air mixture of which equivalence ratios were 0.6, 0.7, 0.8 and 0.9 were used and liquid n-heptane was injected by using the high-voltage electrical discharge.

Influence of Combustion Chamber Wall Temperature on Combustion in an HCCI Engine Using an Alternative Fuel

Internal combustion engines today are required to achieve even higher efficiency and cleaner exhaust emissions. Currently, research interest is focused on premixed compression ignition (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, HCCI) combustion. However, HCCI engines have no physical means of initiating ignition such as a spark plug or the fuel injection timing and quantity. Therefore, it is difficult to control the ignition timing. In addition, combustion occurs simultaneously at multiple sites in the combustion chamber. As a result, combustion takes place extremely rapidly especially in the high load region. That makes it difficult for the engine to operate stably at high loads. This study focused on the fuel composition as a possible means to solve these problems. The effect of using fuel blends on the HCCI operating region and combustion characteristics was investigated using a single-cylinder test engine.

An Effect of Cooled-EGR on Diesel Engine Performance Fueled with Coconut-oil Methyl Ester

The purpose of this study is to explore an effect of cooled-EGR on the diesel engine performance fueled with coconut-oil methyl ester (CME). The exhaust gas was cooled by the water at room temperature and was fed to the intake manifold, and the EGR rate was changed from 0 % to 30 % at every 10 %. The engine performances were measured at several EGR rates, fuel injection pressures and timings. Test fuels were CME and commercial diesel fuel. In the case of high EGR rate at which the compression ignition was deteriorated, the ignition timing of CME was always earlier than that of diesel fuel, therefore CME had good ignitability as compared with diesel fuel under EGR application. When the fuel injection pressure was increased at high EGR rate, the ignition delay was improved by the fuel atomization and air-fuel mixing effect.
