Parasitic Battery Drain Problems and AUTOSAR Acceptance Testing

Abstract Battery Drain problems can occur in the vehicle due to improper network management between electronic control units (ECUs). Aim of this paper is to identify the factors that cause transmission and cease of transmission of a network management message of an ECU along with its application messages that controls the sleep/wake-up performance of other ECUs in the network. Strategy used here is, based on the root cause analysis of problems found in Display unit in vehicle environment, the functional CAN signals impacting sleep/wake-up behavior is re-mapped along with the state flow transition of AUTOSAR NM Algorithm. A re-defined test case design and simulation for vehicle model is created. Especially it focuses on validating the impact of functional CAN signals on DUT’s sleep/wake-up performance.

Using a Dual-Layer Specification to Offer Selective Interoperability for Uptane

Abstract This work introduces the concept of a dual-layer specification structure for standards that separate interoperability functions, such as backward compatibility, localization, and deployment, from those essential to reliability, security, and functionality. The latter group of features, which constitute the actual standard, make up the baseline layer for instructions, while all the elements required for interoperability are specified in a second layer, known as a Protocols, Operations, Usage, and Formats (POUF) document. We applied this technique in the development of a standard for Uptane [1], a security framework for over-the-air (OTA) software updates used in many automobiles. This standard is a good candidate for a dual-layer specification because it requires communication between entities, but does not require a specific format for this communication.

Securing the On-Board Diagnostics Port (OBD-II) in Vehicles

Abstract Modern vehicles integrate Internet of Things (IoT) components to bring value-added services to both drivers and passengers. These components communicate with the external world through different types of interfaces including the on-board diagnostics (OBD-II) port, a mandatory interface in all vehicles in the United States and Europe. While this transformation has driven significant advancements in efficiency and safety, it has also opened a door to a wide variety of cyberattacks, as the architectures of vehicles were never designed with external connectivity in mind, and accordingly, security has never been pivotal in the design. As standardized, the OBD-II port allows not only direct access to the internal network of the vehicle but also installing software on the Electronic Control Units (ECUs).

A Comprehensive Attack and Defense Model for the Automotive Domain

Abstract In the automotive domain, the overall complexity of technical components has increased enormously. Formerly isolated, purely mechanical cars are now a multitude of cyber-physical systems that are continuously interacting with other IT systems, for example, with the smartphone of their driver or the backend servers of the car manufacturer. This has huge security implications as demonstrated by several recent research papers that document attacks endangering the safety of the car. However, there is, to the best of our knowledge, no holistic overview or structured description of the complex automotive domain. Without such a big picture, distinct security research remains isolated and is lacking interconnections between the different subsystems. Hence, it is difficult to draw conclusions about the overall security of a car or to identify aspects that have not been sufficiently covered by security analyses.

Evaluation of Thermal Roll Formed Thick Composite Panels Using Surface NDT Methods

Abstract Inspection of Composite panels is vital to the assessment of their ability to be fit for purpose. Conventional methods such as X-ray CT and Ultrasonic scanning can be used, however, these are often expensive and time consuming processes. In this paper we investigate the use of off-the-shelf Non-Destructive Test, NDT, equipment utilizing Fringe projection hardware and open source software to rapidly evaluate a series of composite panels. These results are then verified using destructive analysis of the panels to prove the reliability of the rapid NDT methods for use with carbon composite panels. This process allows us to quickly identify regions of geometric intolerance or formed defects without the use of expensive sub-surface scanning systems, enabling a fast and cost effective initial part evaluation system. The focus of this testing series is on 6mm thick pre-preg carbon-epoxy composite laminates that have been laid up using AFP and formed using TRF.

Crashworthiness Performance of Multi-Cornered Structures under Quasi-Static Compression and Dynamic Axial Loading Conditions

Abstract With increased consumer demand for fuel efficient vehicles as well as more stringent greenhouse gas regulations and/or Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards from governments around the globe, the automotive industry, including the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and suppliers, is working diligently to innovate in all areas of vehicle design. In addition to improving aerodynamics, enhancing internal combustion engines and transmission technologies, and developing alternative fuel vehicles, mass reduction has been identified as an important strategy in future vehicle development. In this article, the development, analysis, and experiment of multi-cornered structures are presented. To achieve mass reduction, two non-traditional multi-cornered structures, with twelve- and sixteen-cornered cross-sections, were developed separately by using computer simulations.

Microstructural Characterization and Hot Corrosion Behavior of Plasma-Sprayed Fe17Cr2Ni0.18C/Fly Ash Cenosphere-Based Composite Coating

Abstract The current investigation studies the microstructure and high-temperature hot corrosion behavior of plasma-sprayed coatings. The composition of Fe17Cr2Ni0.18C and fly ash cenosphere powder is maintained in the 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% ratio by weight percent, respectively. Both powder mixtures were thoroughly blended correspondingly and coated on T22 boiler steel tubings. Thermocyclic hot corrosion studies were examined in a liquid salt condition of Na2SO4—60% V2O5 for 17 cycles of 51 h at 600°C on bare and coated steels. Thermogravimetric practice was used to establish the kinetics of hot corrosion of uncoated and coated steels. As-coated samples are studied for microstructure and microhardness. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray mapping characterization techniques have been utilized for structural analysis of the as-coated and hot-corroded samples.

Effect of Fuel-to-Air Ratio on Oxidation and Interfacial Structure in Galvanizing of a Dual-Phase Steel

Abstract Automotive-grade high-strength steels are galvanized for improved corrosion resistance. However, selective oxidation of alloying elements during annealing heat-treatment may influence the subsequent zinc (Zn) coating quality. The formation of internal and external oxides depends on the alloy composition, especially the Si/Mn ratio, and the oxygen potential of the annealing atmosphere. In this work, a dual-phase (DP) steel was intercritically annealed with varied fuel-to-air ratios in a direct-fired furnace and then galvanized in a Zn bath with 0.2 wt% Al. The type of internal and external oxides and the interfacial structures between the steel substrate, the Al-Fe-Zn inhibition layer, and the Zn coating were examined by using site-specific focused ion beam (FIB) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Comparison Study of Malaysian Driver Seating Position in SAEJ1517 Accommodation Model

Abstract A key element in an ergonomically designed driver’s seat in a car is the correct identification of driver seating position and posture accommodation. Current practice by the automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is to utilize the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) J1517 standard practice as a reference. However, it was found that utilizing such guidelines, which were developed based on the American population, did not fit well with the anthropometry and stature of the Malaysian population. This research seeks to address this issue by comparing the SAE J1517 Model against Malaysian preferred driving position. A total of 62 respondents were involved for the driver seating position and accommodation study in the vehicle driver’s seat buck mockup survey and measurements. The results have shown that the Malaysian drivers prefer to sit forward as compared to the SAE J1517 Model and have shorter posture joint angle.

Fuzz Testing Virtual ECUs as Part of the Continuous Security Testing Process

Abstract There are already a number of cybersecurity activities introduced in the development process in the automotive industry. For example, security testing of automotive components is often performed at the late stages of development. Fuzz testing is often performed as part of the security testing activity. However, since testing occurs late in the development process, it is expensive and, in some cases, may be too late to fix certain identified issues. Another challenge is that some testing requires hardware that is costly and may not be available until late in the development. We suggest fuzz testing virtual ECUs, which overcomes these challenges and allows for more efficient and effective security testing.

Model Predictive Control of an Automotive Driveline for Optimal Torque Delivery with Minimal Oscillations during Torque Converter Slipping Conditions

Abstract During certain driving scenarios, low-speed engine vibrations get propagated to the driveline and affect the drivability of a vehicle. To reduce the impact of these vibrations, a locked torque converter lockup clutch (TCC) is allowed to temporarily slip to increase the damping in the driveline. However, the initial slow dynamics of the fluid path of the torque converter cause the vehicle to feel sluggish. In this article, we design a model predictive controller (MPC) that optimally controls the torque request from the actuator (i.e., engine or e-motor) and the lockup clutch capacity for reducing this sluggishness. The study is conducted for a light-duty vehicle and uses an experimentally validated, detailed full-order model (FOM) for developing and validating a computationally efficient, reduced-order driveline model (ROM).

Simulation Study on Influence of Environmental Temperature on Current-Carrying Capacity of Automotive Electrical Connector

Abstract The purpose of this article is to reduce the adverse effects of temperature rise on the electrical connector, reduce the failure risk of electrical connector due to the mismatch of current-carrying capacity selection, and improve the service life of the electrical connector. This article takes a certain type of vehicle electric connector as the research object. An accurate contact pair model of the electrical connector is established by SOLIDWORKS software. The force and thermoelectric coupling simulation analysis of the 3D solid model with reasonable load and boundary conditions was carried out by ABAQUS software. The results show that the insertion force and positive force of the electrical connector terminal are in line with the values specified in the standard.

Connected Eco-approach and Departure System for Diesel Trucks

Abstract Diesel trucks play a crucial role in transportation activity and a major contributor to fuel consumption and air pollution. To improve the energy efficiency of diesel trucks, we develop a truck eco-approach and departure (EAD) system based on Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) message from signal controllers and road grade information along the path. The proposed model consists of two levels—the lower level for powertrain-based fuel consumption estimation and the upper level for optimal trajectory planning. The powertrain model is designed for a diesel engine with a six-gear transmission and well calibrated using on-board Electronic Control Unit (ECU) data. The trajectory planning model is formulated as a shortest path problem with the combination of time, distance, and speed as the state on each node and fuel consumption rate as the cost on state transition.

A New Approach for Development of a High-Performance Intake Manifold for a Single-Cylinder Engine Used in Formula SAE Application

Abstract The Formula SAE (FSAE) is an international engineering competition where a Formula style race car is designed and built by students from worldwide universities. According to FSAE regulation, an air restrictor with circular cross section of 20 mm for gasoline-fuelled and 19 mm for E-85-fuelled vehicles is to be incorporated between the throttle valve and engine inlet. The sole purpose of this regulation is to limit the airflow to the engine used. The only sequence allowed is throttle valve, restrictor and engine inlet. A new approach of combining ram theory and acoustic theory methods are investigated to increase the performance of the engine by designing an optimized intake runner for a particular engine speed range and an optimized plenum volume in this range. Engine performance characteristics such as brake power, brake torque and volumetric efficiency are taken into considerations.

Model Following Damping Force Control for Vehicle Body Motion during Transient Cornering

Abstract The aim of this study is to achieve the target transient posture of a vehicle according to the user’s steering operation. The target behavior was hypothesized to be a roll mode in the diving pitch, even during steering inputs on rough surfaces, in order to improve subjective evaluation. As a result of organizing the issues of feedforward control (FF) and feedback control (FB), we hypothesized that it would be appropriate to follow the ideal posture. The model following damping control (MFDC) was newly proposed by the authors as a solution to a control algorithm based on model-following control. The feature employs skyhook control (SH), which follows the deviation between the behavior of the reference model, which generates a target behavior with no input from the road surface, and the actual behavior of the vehicle. Numerical analyses were performed to verify the followability of the target behavior and the effect of roll damping performance.

Delivering Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment Based on ISO 21434: Practical and Tooling Considerations

Abstract Automotive cybersecurity engineers now have the challenge of delivering Risk Assessments of their products using a method that is described in the new standard for automotive cybersecurity: International Organization for Standardization/Society of Automotive Engineers (ISO/SAE) 21434. The ISO standards are not treated in the same way as regulations that are mandated by governing bodies. However, the new United Nations (UN) Regulation No. 155 “Cyber Security and Cyber Security Management” actually drives a need to apply ISO/SAE 21434. This article investigates the practical aspects of performing such a Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) from system modelling and asset identification to attack modelling and the consequences an attack will have.

The Placement of Digitized Objects in a Point Cloud as a Photogrammetric Technique

Abstract The frequency of video-capturing collision events from surveillance systems are increasing in reconstruction analyses. The video that has been provided to the investigator may not always include a clear perspective of the relevant area of interest. For example, surveillance video of an incident may have captured a pre- or post-incident perspective that, while failing to capture the precise moment when the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, still contains valuable information that can be used to assist in reconstructing the incident. When surveillance video is received, a quick and efficient technique to place the subject object or objects into a three-dimensional environment with a known rate of error would add value to the investigation.

Towards a Blockchain Framework for Autonomous Vehicle System Integrity

Abstract Traditionally, Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in vehicles have been left unsecured. Ensuring cybersecurity in an ECU network is challenging as there is no centralized authority in the vehicle to provide security as a service. While progress has been made to address cybersecurity vulnerabilities, many of these approaches have focused on enterprise, software-centric systems and require more computational resources than typically available for onboard vehicular devices. Furthermore, vehicle networks have the additional challenge of mitigating security vulnerabilities while satisfying safety and performance constraints. This article introduces a blockchain framework to detect unauthorized modifications to vehicle ECUs. A proof of concept blockchain prototype framework is implemented on a set of microprocessors (comparable to those used by simple ECUs) as a means to assess the efficacy of using our blockchain approach to detect unauthorized updates.

Data Privacy in the Emerging Connected Mobility Services: Architecture, Use Cases, Privacy Risks, and Countermeasures

Abstract The rapid development of connected and automated vehicle technologies together with cloud-based mobility services is transforming the transportation industry. As a result, huge amounts of consumer data are being collected and utilized to provide personalized mobility services. Using big data poses serious challenges to data privacy. To that end, the risks of privacy leakage are amplified by data aggregations from multiple sources and exchanging data with third-party service providers, in face of the recent advances in data analytics. This article provides a review of the connected vehicle landscape from case studies, system characteristics, and dataflows. It also identifies potential challenges and countermeasures.
